Police said a GMC SUV was traveling west on Maybank Highway about 6:40 p.m. when it veered over the center line and sideswiped an Infiniti sedan traveling east before then striking a Lincoln sedan head on.
A rear passenger in the Lincoln, identified by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office as 76-year-old Gretchen Gross of Buffalo, New York, was killed in the collision.
The driver of the Lincoln, and seven others were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries, according to authorities.
The driver of the SUV has been identified as 21-year-old Jose Javier Reyes-Escobar of Johns Island.
He has been charged with three felony counts of driving under the influence , one count of driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury or death, driving without a license, and having open containers of alcohol in a vehicle.
Magistrate Judge Richardine Singleton-Brown denied bail on one of the felony DUI charges, lodging Reyes in the Charleston County jail until another judge chooses whether to set his bail in 30 days, she said.
He was granted bail on the other counts.

Reyes was released from the hospital on December 21 and remanded to jail, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Beth Wolfsen.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Reyes admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the crash and said he had lost control of his car. He said he was coming home from working as a painter on Kiawah Island when the crash occurred.
Preliminary results indicated Reyes’s blood-alcohol content was 0.335 percent at the time of the collision, more than four times the level state law presumes one is intoxicated, according to police.
Reyes was inside the United States as an illegal immigrant, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has placed a detainer on him. If he is released from custody at any time, he will be turned over to ICE for arrest and deportation.
Goss was a frequent visitor to South Carolina, and the philanthropist was former president of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo. The organization issued a statement on her tragic death:
“Whether it was stepping in to cook kosher hot dogs at a PJ Library picnic, assisting the campaign to renovate the Holland Family Building, or supporting the efforts of staff leadership, Gretchen’s impact is without parallel.
“Her insight, experience, and wise advice enabled the JCC to succeed over the past 20 years. Sadly, she will be missed, and her memory will be a blessing for everyone at the JCC.”
A funeral service is happening Thursday for a former Jewish Community Center leader from New York.

A victim’s advocate read aloud impact statements from Gross’s family members. Gross was from Buffalo, N.Y., but had spent winters on Kiawah Island for over three decades, they said.
They described Gross as a beloved grandmother, philanthropist and “vital community leader and friend.”
Another woman injured in the crash remains in a medically-induced coma suffering from a fractured neck.
Again and again: Illegal immigrant charged in drunk driving crash that killed father of two
April 14, 2021
PRINCETON, NC – An illegal immigrant from Honduras has been charged after reportedly hitting another driver head-on, allegedly causing the death of the other driver.
Rolbin Pacheco, 35, was driving his vehicle in the early hours of March 29, 2021, unlicensed, intoxicated and traveling the wrong way on U.S. Highway 70 near Princeton.
Pacheco reportedly struck, head-on, a truck driven by Cheston Edwards, 36, of Kinston, NC.

Edwards was killed instantly.
According to law enforcement, Pacheco walked away from the crash uninjured.
Cheston Edwards leaves behind a girlfriend, two young children, a 9-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter, and other loved ones.
His grieving mother, Mary Edwards, told WRAL News that Edwards had been on the phone with his girlfriend at the time of the crash, and the “phone just cut off while they were talking.”
She added:
“[Cheston Edwards] loved his family, he loved me….
“He was a person that had deep love.”
Mary Edwards had the following message for Pacheco:
“He needs to know that he has hurt me.Deeply.
“He’s taken something from me that he shouldn’t have taken from me.”
“He was a person that had deep love.”

Leaning on her faith, she added:
“I love my son.And my son loved me.
“I will see him again.I will see him again.”
Pacheco is being held on a $1 million bond.He is being charged with felony death by motor vehicle, DWI, reckless driving, and driving without a license.
The Johnson County Detention Center has confirmed that Pacheco is a Honduran citizen and is in this country illegally. An ICE detainer has been placed on him.
The tragic death of Cheston Edwards at the hands of an illegal alien is a stark reminder that illegal immigration is not a victimless crime.
Sadly, other recent examples abound.
In Kansas City, for instance, illegal immigrant Ramon Vazquez-Carmona, 42, reportedly crashed into an SUV driven by Cynthia “Cindy” Goulding, who had pulled over to assist victims of another wreck.Goulding was killed at the scene.
Goulding leaves behind a loving family and a husband of 25 years, who found it no surprise that her last act was to be a Good Samaritan.
He told Fox4 News:
“She’d most definitely do it again.”
He added:
“That’s the way she was.”
Vazquez-Carmona has been charged with “felony involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence and one count of driving without a license.”
According to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Vasquez-Carmona is from Mexico, and he legally entered the U.S. in 2008.However, he violated the terms of his admission and was deported, only to return illegally in 2009.
Another example of recent illegal immigrant crime comes from Hot Springs, AR, where a pair of illegal alien brothers have been charged with first degree murder after allegedly stabbing a man to death.
On March 14, brothers Gaspar Gaspar Andres, a 36-year-old illegal alien, and Pascual Gaspar Andres, a 26-year-old illegal alien, were spotted by witnesses with victim Miguel Ruiz Ruiz, 32.
The brothers fled the scene, escaping in a vehicle, and Ruiz was found stabbed, lying in a pool of his own blood.Ruiz died at the scene.
According to Breitbart News, ICE has confirmed that the brothers are illegal aliens from Guatemala. One has a history of traffic violations, and the other has no previous criminal history, aside from an illegal border crossing.
They were both arrested, and they are being held without bail in Garland County, AR. Breitbart reports that they face life in prison.
Collier County, Florida, saw another vicious attack by an illegal immigrant. Local law enforcement arrested a thrice-deported illegal alien after a stabbing incident.
On Thursday, March 4, according to NBC-2 News, Obduliu Godines, 36, kicked open a door at his rooming house and, armed with a knife, declared “I’m going to kill you” as he approached the room’s occupant.
The victim defended himself with a backpack, but Godines was able to stab him in the arm.Godines then fled and barricaded himself in his own room, where deputies were able to take him into custody.
He was arrested for “burglary with battery and aggravated battery.”
Three-Time Deported Illegal Alien Accused of Stabbing Attack in Florida https://t.co/fSbzzqlqfG via @BreitbartNews @JxhnBxnder
— FAIR (@FAIRImmigration) March 15, 2021
Breitbart reports that ICE confirmed that Godines, an illegal alien from Mexico, had been “previously deported from the U.S. on September 27, 2011, October 29, 2011, and January 31, 2012.”
The above very recent examples represent only a handful of instances of crimes committed by immigrants who have already committed a crime by being in this country illegally.
As this country still awaits a visit to the border by Kamala Harris, who was appointed by Joe Biden as point person to address the border situation, crimes committed by illegal aliens sadly continue to be a reminder that illegal border-crossers are far from limited to those with purely innocent intent.
