Putting age behind him, a 100-year-old Harbans Singh hand pulls a cartload of onions and potatoes for the education of his grandson and granddaughter, who lost their father and were abandoned by their mother. Sometimes, the load reaches 200 kilograms but he must bear it. His second son, a fruit seller, separated long ago. Harbans Singh remembers selling vegetables for decades and, before that, working as a palledar (manual loader) for 18 years while in present day Pakistan. His family of grain weighers fled Lahore district’s Sarai Thane Wali village during Partition when he was 27.
