Comics writer Kurt Busiek and publisher Image Comics are partnering up to release five of Busiek’s bestselling creator-owned titles digitally.
Image Comics announced Busiek’s award-winning Astro City, which features art by Brent Anderson and covers and character designs by Alex Ross, will join several titles receiving digital releases in August. Other Busiek comics going digital include Arrowsmith, The Wizard’s Tale, Shockrockets and Superstar: As Seen on TV. Readers can download all of these, including Astro City, on Aug. 4 on Comixology, with Image noting the titles will also be made available on Apple Books and Google Play “shortly thereafter.”
“I’m thrilled to be consolidating my creator-owned books at Image,” said Busiek. “Readers have been asking us to make these stories available again, so we’re glad to have them all together at last, and in great company with the rest of the Image line.” The writer also teased the coming of new content, adding, “This is just the beginning, too—there’ll be new material coming as well, but that’ll be another announcement for another day.”
Astro City takes place in a city of superheroes, villains, monsters and more, telling stories in an anthology format across various perspectives “illuminating what it’s like to live amid such marvels.” Arrowsmith is a high fantasy with art by Carlos Pacheco telling the story of a young man in an alternate history dealing with such mythological creatures as dragons and trolls during World War One. The Wizard’s Tale is a Terry Prachett-like fantasy with art by David Wenzel about a supposedly evil wizard, an enchanted toad and the third son of a woodcutter as they make a journey with potentially apocalyptic consequences. Shockrockets features art by Stuart Immonen and tells the story of an elite group of pilots protecting Earth following a devastating alien invasion through hi-tech aircraft fusing modern and alien technology.
Busiek and Immonen team up again in Superstar: As Seen on TV which follows a superhero whose power rises and falls depending on his popularity, and who makes a deal with his international media tycoon father to boost his influence in order to maintain the strength needed to save the world.
Readers hungry for more announcements from the creator-owned comics publisher were recently treated to the return of the Skybound Xpo earlier this month. The two-day virtual event ran from July 17-18 and featured appearances by Robert Kirkman (Invincible) and Rob Liefeld (Deadpool), behind-the-scenes panels, the launch of Skybound’s new young readers graphic novel imprint and much more.

What Jackson Jobe did this year is incredible.
As a pitcher, he struck out 122 batters and walked … five.
As a batter, he hit .469 with 7 bombs.
The @RoadtoDetroit first rounder is our 2021 High School Player of the Year.https://t.co/2IyoiiaZgr pic.twitter.com/XmiucimIkE
— Baseball America (@BaseballAmerica)
DETROIT — Jackson Jobe and Izaac Pacheco have played against each other since they were 14, and became friends at the All-American game at Wrigley Field last fall. They talked on the phone repeatedly about their experiences going through the Draft process, and they ended up selecting the same agent to advise them.
“They’re great at developing young pitchers,” Jobe said of the Tigers, “but I think also great at developing young players in general. The first day I came in, the first few guys I met, I just felt comfortable and felt at home. It felt like this place was the right place for me, and the place that I was meant to be.”
All of the deals were expected. Jobe, a Scott Boras client, and his family have been in Lakeland since Monday working out the final details while he underwent his physical. Jobe has met with player development officials and pitching instructors to start working out a plan for the rest of the summer.
First-round comp pick Ty Madden, who signed earlier this week in Detroit, will not pitch this summer after an extended season for the University of Texas that ended in the College World Series. Jobe had a shorter season in high school, where his wipeout slider and mid-90s fastball sent him skyrocketing up Draft boards. He last pitched in a game on May 14, the final game of his high school career.
The slider, with spin rates that were incredible for a high schooler, will create plenty of intrigue whenever Jobe does take the mound. He went 9-0 with a 0.13 ERA over 51 2/3 innings at Heritage Hall High School, racking up 122 strikeouts against just five walks. He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in his state.
The deals fit into the framework of a flurry of signings by the Tigers since completing the Draft just over a week ago. Detroit has agreed to terms with 15 of its 21 picks, including 10 of its top 11 selections. The only pick yet to agree within the top 10 rounds is third-rounder Dylan Smith, a right-hander who pitched at the University of Alabama.
The Tigers have $403,100 left in their Draft pool; the slot value for their third-round pick is $844,200. Teams that exceed their Draft allotment by 5 percent or less pay a 75 percent penalty on the overage, but don’t forfeit future picks. Teams that go 5 percent or more over their allotment forfeit future picks as well as pay penalties.

A former longtime member of the Baldwin Park City Council has agreed to plead guilty to taking bribes in exchange for his vote to ratify a police union’s contract with the city, authorities announced Wednesday.
Ricardo Pacheco, 58, was initially charged in March, but the case was kept secret as he began cooperating with the FBI in its continuing investigation of public corruption in the San Gabriel Valley, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles. Pacheco, first elected to the council in 1997, resigned in June as part of his plea agreement.
In court files unsealed Tuesday, Pacheco admitted that he took $37,900 in bribes from a Baldwin Park police officer in 2018. Pacheco was serving as the city’s mayor pro tem at the time, and the officer was working undercover for the FBI.
In return for the bribes, Pacheco voted in March 2018 in favor of a three-year labor contract for the Baldwin Park Police Assn. that was approved by the council and required the city to pay officers $4.4 million, the court papers say. A police union representative could not be reached for comment, and the officer who paid the bribes was not identified.
The bribes included $20,000 in cash that the officer gave Pacheco in an envelope at a Baldwin Park coffee shop, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. The remaining $17,900 came in checks made out to Pacheco’s church and to sham political committees that he secretly controlled, prosecutors said.
“Mr. Pacheco deeply regrets his actions,” said his lawyer, Glen Jonas. “He is making amends by accepting responsibility and cooperating with investigators.”
Pacheco agreed to forfeit $83,145 in cash seized by the FBI, including $62,900 that he had buried in his backyard and some money stashed in a safe in his bedroom, according to his plea agreement with prosecutors. Pacheco acquired that money through unspecified “illegal activity,” the plea agreement said.
Prosecutors blacked out a dozen pages of the plea agreement to conceal other aspects of the ongoing corruption investigation. The portions that were unsealed make reference to $219,755 in illegal proceeds that Pacheco has agreed to forfeit, but they do not specify the source of that money.
Pacheco’s lawyer declined to explain the illegal proceeds that Pacheco admitted receiving from unnamed sources.
A judge said arrogance and greed drove Englander to lie to the FBI about cash payments and a debauched night in Las Vegas.
Pacheco, who is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 2, faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
He has long been a controversial figure in Baldwin Park. After a jury found him guilty of racial and sexual discrimination against the city’s former police chief in 2019, a critic of the councilman displayed huge banners outside his Ramona Boulevard business calling Pacheco a “fraud” and a “liar.”
The city then fined the critic, Albert Ehlers, more than $12,000 for failing to get a permit for the signs. Ehlers’ son Robert and the Baldwin Park Free Speech Coalition sued the city, arguing that the fines violated Ehler’s 1st Amendment right to free speech.
The city’s newly elected Green Party mayor, Emmanuel Estrada, released a statement condemning corruption and pledging cooperation with investigators.
“I was not Mayor during the time these events occurred,” he said. “However, I am committed to rooting out corruption wherever it occurs and upholding the high standards of my office.”
