A high level of vegetable consumption was not independently associated with reduced risk for CVD, according to results from a cohort study of nearly 400,000 participants.

The association between a vegetable-rich diet and reduced CVD risk was confounded by other variables, according to the researchers.

“Our large study did not find evidence for a protective effect of vegetable intake on the occurrence of CVD,” Qi Feng, PhD, researcher in the Nuffield department of population health at the University of Oxford, U.K., said in a press release. “Instead, our analyses show that the seemingly protective effect of vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely to be accounted for by bias from residual confounding factors, related to differences in socioeconomic situation and lifestyle.”

Feng and colleagues analyzed 399,586 participants (mean age, 56 years; 55% women) from the UK Biobank cohort who did not have CVD at baseline.

Among the cohort, the mean intake of raw vegetables was 2.3 tablespoons per day and the mean intake of cooked vegetables was 2.8 tablespoons per day. Participants were followed for a median of 12.1 years, during which there were 18,052 CVD events and 4,406 CVD deaths.

Vegetables and CVD risk

Before adjustment for confounders, being in the highest quartile of total vegetable intake conferred reduced risk for incident CVD compared with being in the lowest quartile (HR = 0.9; 95% CI, 0.83-0.97), whereas for raw vegetable intake, the highest quartile was associated with reduced risk for CVD (HR = 0.89; 95% CI, 0.83-0.95) and MI (HR = 0.88; 95% CI, 0.81-0.96) compared with the lowest quartile, according to the researchers. There was no association between cooked vegetable intake and CVD risk (HR = 1; 95% CI, 0.91-1.09), and there was no association between total, raw or cooked vegetable intake and stroke risk.

Also, before adjustment for confounders, higher raw vegetable intake was associated with reduced risk for CVD mortality (HR = 0.85; 95% CI, 0.74-0.97), but higher cooked vegetable intake was not (HR = 0.96; 95% CI, 0.8-1.13), the researchers wrote.

Confounders attenuate association

However, the associations were substantially attenuated after adjustment for confounders; those confounders reduced the likelihood ratio chi-square statistic for association between raw vegetable intake and CVD incidence by 82% and between raw vegetable intake and CVD mortality by 87%, the researchers wrote.

“Adjustment for socioeconomic (including educational attainment and Townsend deprivation index) and lifestyle factors (including physical activity, smoking, drinking, use of mineral supplements, use of vitamin supplements, fruit intake, oily fish intake, non-oily fish intake, red meat intake and processed meat intake) results in most of the reductions in [likelihood ratio chi-square] statistic, while further adjustment for BMI and baseline health status resulted in only slight further reductions, suggesting that the observed associations are likely to be accounted for by residual confounding from socioeconomic status and lifestyle factors,” Feng and colleagues wrote.

Ben Lacey, MBChB, MSc, DPhil, FFPH, associate professor of epidemiology and public health at the University of Oxford and head of the UK Biobank Epidemiology Group, said in the release that the study has “implications for understanding the dietary causes of CVD and the burden of CVD normally attributed to low vegetable intake. However, eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight remains an important part of maintaining good health and reducing risk of major diseases, including some cancers. It is widely recommended that at least five portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables should be eaten every day.”

Thursday Rockpile: Terry Shumpert was the ultimate Rockies super utility man

Colorado Rockies v St. Louis Cardinals

Colorado Rockies news and links for Thursday, February 17, 2022

The Colorado Rockies have long been familiar with utility and super utility players with varying degrees of success. When you think of a Rockies utility man many faces potentially come to mind: Pat Valaika, Daniel Descalso, Jonathan Herrera, Cristhian Adames, Jordan Pacheco, Jamey Carroll, and most recently Garrett Hampson. Hampson, Carroll, and Herrera have all been successful as utility men for the Rockies, but now over 20 years ago the Rockies had their ultimate role player. Terry Shumpert played five seasons with the Rockies starting in 1998 as one of the team’s first “true” super utility men. Shumpert was so successful in this role that MLB.com’s Thomas Harding named him one of the franchise’s top five bench players of all time—along with noted bats John Vander Wal, Seth Smith, and Ryan Spilborghs—despite his prowess not necessarily being at the plate.

Originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the 1987 draft, Shumpert had a solid debut in 1990. He slashed .275/.292/.363 in 91 at-bats while playing mostly second base. Diminishing returns in the next few seasons (.220/.272/.341 with a total -1.6 rWAR over five seasons while playing 2B, 3B, SS, and some DH) rendered him expendable to the Royals, who traded him as part of a conditional deal to the Boston Red Sox. Shumpert received very little playing time across his next three destinations with Boston, then the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres. He had just 111 total at-bats from 1995-1997, slashing .243/.301/.387 for a combined -0.6 rWAR. However, his use as a utility player continued to grow as Shumpert saw reps in the corner outfield in addition to all infield positions but first base.

Shumpert signed with the Rockies for the 1998 season but appeared injust 23 total games—mostly as a pinch hitter. He played just 20 total innings of defense, all as a second baseman. When injuries and a constantly fluctuating lineup thrust Shumpert into a more sizeable role in 1999, he finally had his time to shine as both a frequent player and a super utility man.

During the 1999 season, Shumpert played 412 23 innings at second base through 54 appearances and 46 starts. He also made appearances at every position but catcher, first base, and pitcher. Most of his utility work came at third base or spread across the entire outfield. Shumpert was also the 7th most valuable player on the team by rWAR with 2.4, one of just three position players to crack the top 12 behind Larry Walker (5.1 rWAR) and Todd Helton (2.9 rWAR). Shumpert also experienced his best career season as a hitter, slashing .347/.413/.584 in 92 games. Through 262 at-bats he hit 26 doubles, three triples, ten home runs, and drove in 37 RBIs. His batting stats would normalize over his next three seasons with the Rockies, but his use as a super utility player would not.

Terry Shumpert would make more than 100 appearances in each of his next three seasons with the Rockies while playing at least four defensive positions in addition to pinch hitting duties. 2002—his age 35 season—would be Shumpert’s worst year with the Rockies while receiving significant playing time. He would be granted free agency following the season and catch on with the Tampa bay Devil Rays for 2003. Though the now 36-year old Shumpert would see significantly reduced playing time—59 appearances and 22 starts—he was still used for super utility. In his final big league season Shumpert would play every position but catcher, pitcher, first base, and center field.

Shumpert tried to catch on with the Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2004, but was unable to crack the big league roster. He would retire after 2004 having played every position in the majors except pitcher and catcher: a testament to his positional versatility. Although his career numbers through 14 big league seasons are unremarkable, his time with the Rockies is a clear positive. Through his five seasons in Purple he slashed a solid .282/.349/.464, hitting 30 home runs and posting an rWAR of 2.1 while again playing every non-battery position defensively.

Shumpert had the most positional versatility compared to the other super utility men listed at the beginning of this article, and was topped in rWAR while with the Rockies by just one player: Jamey Carroll. Carroll posted an rWAR of 3.5 over two seasons with the Rockies, also hitting arguably the most important sacrifice fly in franchise history. Shumpert played more positions than Carroll as a utility player, and his 2.1 rWAR trumps every other player listed. His contributions to a team very much in flux during the late 1990s and early 2000s is an often overlooked part of Rockies history. With how much the current Rockies dote on positional versatility, Terry Shumpert is perhaps the ultimate super utility man to wear purple pinstripes.

Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron admits to opioid use while testifying in trial over Tyler Skaggs’ death | Denver Post ($)

Tuesday saw multiple major leaguers and former Los Angeles Angels players take the stand to testify in the trial of Eric Kay—the former Angels employee—and the drug-related death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs in 2019. Rockies first baseman CJ Cron was among those testifying and named Kay as his supplier of opioids when he was with the Angels. Cron was drafted by and played for the Angels from 2014-2017. Cron has struggled with injuries during his career, including a broken left hand with the Angels in 2016, and called his use of the opioid oxycodone “a dumb decision.” Former Angels pitchers Cam Bedrosian, Matt Harvey, and Mike Morin also testified while naming Kay as their supplier.

The change that Kyle Freeland would love to see in the CBA | Rox Pile

As the owner-initiated lockout continues past when pitchers and catchers were supposed to report to spring training, Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland discussed the CBA as a guest on The Baseball Insiders. Freeland says that he and other Rockies players keep up to date on the negotiations via Rockies union representative Scott Oberg. When it comes to the new CBA, Freeland would like to see free agency be determined by age rather than service time. ““I gotta protect my guys,” he said.

Slow-rolling hunt for absent Texas Democrats begins with a door knock

The warrants allow law enforcement to order, and even escort, members back to the chamber. But given that they are not guilty of a crime, members are not at risk of going to jail.

The first step in the search came Wednesday, when the sergeant-at-arms stopped by the Democrats’ Capitol offices and left copies of the warrants with their staffs.

On Thursday and Friday, law enforcement visited the homes of at least a few Austin Democrats, with the aim of bringing them back to the chamber, but found none of them.

It remains to be seen whether the slow-rolling pursuit will force the Democrats’ hands. The majority of the party’s members spent weeks in Washington, D.C., in protest of GOP priority elections legislation that they say amounts to voter suppression. They’d hoped to sway Congress to pass federal elections legislation that would override such state laws, but that window has closed, at least temporarily, now that both U.S. chambers have recessed for summer.

Rep. Vikki Goodwin, D-Austin, said a neighbor who was watching her home Thursday let her know that law enforcement had come by in the late afternoon. She said they left a copy of the arrest warrant signed by Phelan, which she’d already received by email.

“I’m taking it one day at a time, but I will say that the Republicans’ actions don’t encourage me to come back to the House floor,” Goodwin said. “I’ve said it a number of times, but what I think we need to be addressing is the spike in COVID, the delta variant and making sure our schoolchildren are safe.”

Goodwin added that Republicans have proposed a bill that would cement in law an executive order by Abbott that prevents schools from requiring face masks. The order is being challenged in court; on Friday, a judge in Travis County granted a temporary stay upholding a Harris County health order requiring masks at schools and day care centers.

“I just feel like if we do go back to the House floor, we’re going to have to fight over that, and we don’t have the numbers to keep that from happening, so no, I’m not planning to go back to the House floor,” Goodwin said. “It’s definitely about voting rights and elections, but there are other things mixed in.”

Meanwhile, Texas Republicans have grown restless waiting for the missing members to return.

“A little bit frustrated that the biggest item on an agenda in this body today is a prayer,” said Rep. Shelby Slawson, R-Stephenville, as she led the invocation as the House was gaveled in Friday. “That’s some wrong thinking.”

A conservative, self-described “constitutionalist” group called Texas Freedom Force on Twitter offered crowdfunded rewards — $200 worth of barbecue and Shiner Bock beer — for any law enforcement officer and their department who arrests a Democratic House member. The group encouraged members to videotape or photograph the arrest and email it to them.

Despite the group’s reference to other law enforcement agencies, a Phelan spokesman said he is aware of only the Department of Public Safety having a role in serving the civil arrest warrants at this time.

Not quite hiding out

House Democratic Caucus Chair Chris Turner, of Grand Prairie, did not appear to be shaken by the threat of arrests of members.

“Republicans’ decision to seek our arrest does not deter our continued and fierce opposition to their attacks on the freedom to vote,” Turner said, though he declined to give details on the Democrats’ plans.

Caucus officials declined to comment on how many members remain in Washington.

Rep. Gina Hinojosa, D-Austin, was still there Friday and said the party’s House coalition remains united, despite some internal divisions earlier in the week over three Democrats who had reappeared on the House floor.

“Certainly the best-case scenario for us would be we stand solid and together and make any decisions that way,” Hinojosa said.

Rep. Jon Rosenthal, D-Houston, returned to Texas last week but has not disclosed his location. He said Friday that he was unaware of any widespread effort to “physically collect folks” and was for the most part going about his life.

“I’m certainly not running around wearing Jon Rosenthal campaign gear or anything like that,” he said. “But I feel comfortable being outside and doing the things that normal humans do.”

An engineer by training, Rosenthal said he was still having meetings with constituents by phone or Zoom, as he has throughout much of the pandemic.

“I wouldn’t engage in anything like this if it wasn’t such an important, fundamental core issue,” he said.

Also Friday, Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, urged the Justice Department in a letter to intervene in Texas and determine that Abbott and Republican lawmakers were engaging in a civil rights conspiracy and violating Democratic members’ constitutional rights by using the threat of a civil arrest to compel attendance. The process for restoring a quorum is outlined in rules of the House that were unanimously adopted by members, including the Democrats, in the spring.

Johnson said he’d spoken with Black lawmakers — Reps. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas, Joe Deshotel of Beaumont and Ron Reynolds of Missouri City — and all of them supported Justice Department intervention.

“The adding of this bounty enhances our concern and further clarifies why federal intervention is needed,” wrote Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas NAACP.
