Is The DeWALT DW735 Planer Worth The Extra Money – Lazy Guy DIY

Long ago in a garage far far away I had a woodshop with mainly orange brand tools. From table saw, to sliding miter, to jointer and then of course… the spindle sander. No wait… the lunchbox thickness planer (although I still love that spindle sander)! At a price point between $300 to $400, a lunch box planer is one of those tool purchases that’s not quite a beginner woodworker purchase, but also not a several thousand dollar tool investment. Before you pull the trigger and buy a lunchbox planer with that hard earned money… consider waiting a little longer and saving to buy the DeWALT DW735 instead.

More Money Gets You What?

With a 13″ wide by 6″ thick cutting range, you’re going to find similar stats across the board (no pun intended) with competing benchtop planer capacity. So wait… I’m telling you to spend up to $200 more on a woodworking tool that’s been on the market for several years and doesn’t give you any additional cutting capacity?? Don’t worry, I’m also going to tell you that you should spend the extra money and then spend even more later on upgrades.

What you do get, though, is a high quality machine that has a design that reduces snipe and gives you a smoother cut for starters. It also comes with a blower that clears debris better than most dust collectors can handle on their own. Not to mention blade/knife changes are easier on this unit than any other machine in its class. But… you’re going to need that feature. More on that in a minute.

Aftermarket Upgrades

Okay, let’s talk the blades/knives. Your DeWALT DW735 comes with them already installed and then when it’s time to replace them… surprise! You have one more use because they’re reversible. But when it’s time to replace them, you can pick up a double pack (6 blades) of the DeWALT 13″ Planer knives for under $80. But because this planer cuts so smoothly at both speed settings it can seem like you’re burning through blades very quickly. To be clear, this isn’t a flaw. This is how your planer runs at peak performance. So stock up on blades and be prepared to swap out after a few projects.

But… there’s an alternative. The DeWALT DW735 and DW735X have the ability to swap out the cutter head with an aftermarket spiral cut helical shearing head. What’s that mean? You get 40 individual carbide tipped blades that spiral around the cutter head. Each carbide tip has 4 individual blades you can spin if you happen to chip a blade or they dull out on you. That also means you can replace one of 40 blades in a swap, not all 3 of the traditional blades because of the spiral pattern. The helical heads also run quieter, cut cleaner and have a much longer cutting life. But there’s a catch. A helical head will run you over $400. Ouch.

The Thickness Planer Truth

So let’s be very clear here. The DeWALT DW735 Thickness planer is already a significant upgrade over the other field of lunchbox planers and worth the extra investment. But that’s not the point. If you know anything about Tuner Cars or saw one of the Fast & Furious movies, you’ll know what I mean. Take a specific factory car like a Toyota Supra, add a few aftermarket parts and you can get performance better than a several hundred thousand dollar sports car like a Ferrari at a fraction of the price.

And that’s what I’m telling you here. Take the DeWALT DW735 and pair it with a helical head cutter and you’re spending around $800-$900. That’s a high quality piece of woodworking equipment. Plus it’s still a very portable, bench top planer. Or you can grab a Jet or Powermatic planer with a 13″ or 15″ capacity that are stationary and start at around $2,000 and can run up to $5,000. You do the math.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Tens of thousands of people who fled South Lake Tahoe in the teeth of a wildfire were returning home as crews finally managed to stall the advance of flames scant miles from the resort.

But authorities warned that residents of the scenic forest area on the California-Nevada state line weren’t out of the woods yet, with risks ranging from smoky, foul air to belligerent bears.

Evacuation orders for South Lake Tahoe and other lakeside areas were downgraded to warnings on Sunday afternoon and California Highway Patrol officers began removing roadblocks along State Highway 50 from Nevada to the city limits.

The threat from the Caldor Fire hasn’t entirely vanished but downgrading to a warning meant those who wish could return to their homes in what had been a smoke-choked ghost town instead of a thriving Labor Day getaway location.

“So far it hasn’t been a mad rush of cars,” South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Clive Savacool said at an evening briefing. “We’re happy to see that people are slowly trickling in, just because the city does need time to get ready.”

Savacool said officials hoped to have the local hospital emergency room open within 24 hours and said paramedics were staffing fire engines for emergency medical care.

However, he said people with health problems might want to consider staying away because of the smoky air.

People who do return should have enough medication and groceries and a full gas tank in order to be self-sufficient, Savacool said.

Law enforcement was still patrolling so “your home will still be safe,” Savacool said.

However, authorities also warned that in the absence of humans, bears had gone to town, spreading trash everywhere that must be picked up.

“The delicate balance between humans and bears has been upset,” and anyone who thinks a bear may have entered their home should call law enforcement, El Dorado County sheriff’s Sgt. Simon Brown said.

The lifting of mandatory evacuation orders for the Tahoe area marked a milestone in the fight against the fire, which erupted on Aug. 14 and spread across nearly 340 square miles (880 square kilometers) of dense national parks and forests, tree-dotted granite cliffs and scattered cabins and hamlets in the northern Sierra Nevada.

1K acres burned per hour at peak

At its peak, the fire had burned as much as 1,000 acres an hour and last month virtually razed the small community of Grizzly Flats.

But in recent days the winds had eased and thousands of firefighters took advantage of the better weather to hack, burn and bulldoze fire lines, managing to contain 43% of the perimeter.

Most of the western and southern sides of the fire had been corralled, although some areas still were off-limits.

No homes had been lost on the northeastern side of the fire nearest to the lake, and crews managed to carve more fire line along one edge of a fiery finger.

The fire hadn’t made significant progress for days but there were still sections where crews were struggling to expand safe areas and mop up hot spots, allowing evacuation orders there to be lifted.

“We’re up into the wilderness area,” said Jake Cagle, a fire operations section chief. “It’s just a tough piece of ground. We’re in there beating it up. It’s over a two-hour hike to get in there.”

Mandatory evacuation orders on the Nevada side of the state line were lifted Saturday, although Douglas County authorities urged residents to stay alert, saying the fire still has the potential to threaten homes.

California and much of the U.S. West have seen dozens of wildfires in the past two months as the drought-stricken region sweltered under hot, dry weather and winds drove flames through bone-dry vegetation.

In California, nearly 14,500 firefighters were battling 13 large, active fires. Since the year began, more than 7,000 wildfires have devoured 3,000 square miles (nearly 8,000 square kilometers), Cal Fire said.

No deaths reported

No deaths had been reported specifically from the fires. However, authorities said two people assigned to fire-related duties died from illness this week, officials said.

Marcus Pacheco, an assistant fire engine operator for Lassen National Forest with 30 years of experience, died on Thursday. He was assigned to the Dixie Fire burning north of the Caldor Fire, authorities said.

Other details weren’t immediately released.

The Dixie Fire began in mid-July in the northern Sierra Nevada and is the second-largest wildfire in recorded state history. It has burned nearly 1,400 square miles (3,625 square kilometers) in five counties and three national parks and forests, according to Cal Fire.

A retired firefighter who was hired to help with the French Fire died from complications of COVID-19, authorities said. He was identified as Allen Johnson.

“Our team, the firefighting community and the world lost a great friend, mentor, teacher and comrade last night,” said a Facebook posting last Wednesday from California Interagency Incident Management Team 14.

The French Fire in Kern County was 52% contained after burning about 41 square miles (106 square kilometers).

Fire concerns have shut down all national forests in the state.

California has experienced increasingly larger and deadlier wildfires in recent years as climate change has made the West much warmer and drier over the past 30 years. Scientists have said weather will continue to be more extreme and wildfires more frequent, destructive and unpredictable.

The Alegre All-Stars, Volume One (1961) – Latin Jazz Network

Essential Albums Revisited *****

When producer, innovator, and self-described “extrovert of manic proportions and overachiever,” Al Santiago heard Panart’s Cuban Jam Sessions (1959) he flipped. “Wow! How loose, groovy, funky and swinging, and musically avant-garde,” he wrote. “If they could put together a party studio band in Cuba and just jam, well so could we, and of course we did.”

His objective was three-fold: Create a record that rivaled the Cuban Jam Sessions, sell records and have the performers, “improvise music gratifying not only to themselves but to the listeners and dancers.”

But organizing an all-star group with sizeable egos, personality conflicts, opposing musical visions, and ridiculously busy schedules was no easy task. “The solution,” according to  Salazar, “was to pick an off-night during the week when all could be available and find a place where they could work as a unit while preparing for the LP; the night was Tuesday and the place was the Bronx Social Club, The Tritons,” a second-story nightclub on Southern Boulevard between 163rd Street and Westchester Avenue. Over the next six to eight Tuesdays, the band gelled, the music evolved and for those who lived in the neighborhood or learned about it through word-of-mouth, the rehearsals were an event.

The all-star cast included pianist, composer, arranger Charlie Palmieri; flutist Johnny Pacheco; bandleader, timbalero “Kako” Bastar; violinist, saxophonist and veteran of the original Cuban Jam Sessions, Chombo Silva; vocalist, composer Rudy Calzado; percussionists Marcelino Valdés and Julián Cabrera; vocalist, percussionist and guitarist Dioris Valladares; vocalist Yayo el Indio; trombonist Barry Rogers and bassist Bobby Rodríguez.

At the outset, there was no designated leader or charts. The music, which consisted of Cuban standards with jazz elements included Bebo Valdés‘ “Rareza del Siglo,” Abelardo Valdés‘ “Almendra,” Mongo Santamaría‘s “Para Tí,” R. Cueto‘s “Al Carnaval,” the bolero “Soy Feliz,” Charlie Palmieri‘s “Ay Camina Y Ven,” and “Estoy Buscando a Kako,” a “head” arrangement credited to the trumpeter, jazz singer, vibraphonist and mellophone player Don Eliot (1926-1984).

When the group was ready, Salazar assembled the players at Mastertone Recording Studios and the session went off without a hitch. Something Santiago says, “never happened again.”

When the album was released in 1961, between advertising, word-of-mouth, and Santiago’s retailing savvy the albums sold between five to ten thousand copies and made a modest profit, considering the fact that, Santiago says he “never made records for the mass listening audience,” which was a plus.

As Latin recordings go, Volume 1 was unconventional and ahead of its time. Much like its creators: “Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, and a golden long-haired Jew,” the music was diverse, spontaneous, danceable, jazzy, and fun. Also, the icing on the cake was the studio chatter, which revolved around quips, looking for Kako, the sound of booze being poured into a shot glass, and someone yelling, “Cierra la Puerta, Chico!” (Close the door, man!).

Standout tracks include “Almendra” (check out Barry Rogers solo 2:21, followed by Bobby Rodríguez on bass), which earns a well-deserved así se toca! (that’s how it’s played!). Also, Rogers and Chombo Silva trading licks on Mongo Santamaria’s “Para Tí.” The tune that never fails to make me smile is, “Estoy Buscando a Kako,” a head that starts out with a vamp inspired by the aforementioned Don Elliot that swings from start to finish. Also, it’s apparent the band members were having a blast!

Post Volume 1: What separates Volume 1 from the records that followed is the loss of Johnny Pacheco, who left the group when Santiago chose Palmieri as the designated leader (a decision Santiago lived to regret). Also, the loss of Barry Rogers, who was ably replaced by the trombonist, Mark Weinstein. Other reasons include the deaths of the major players, the revolving cast, and the introduction of arrangements, which, according to Willie Torres, put a damper on the group’s spontaneity.

The Alegre All-Stars went on to record El Manicero (The Peanut Vendor, 1964); Alegre All-Stars Volume 2; Lost and Found [The Alegre All-Stars Volume 3 (re-released 1996)]; Way Out (The Alegre All-Stars Volume 4, 1965); Perdido (1977) and the compilation, They Just Don’t Makim Like Us Anymore (1976) and The Alegre All-Stars Te Invita (1992). Also, to avoid contractual problems, the group recorded under different names including The Cesta All-Stars, The Salsa All-Stars, and The Tico-Alegre All-Stars

A short-list of some of the names who passed through the Alegre All-Stars includes Cheo Feliciano, Louie Ramírez, Orlando Marín, Frankie Malabé, Joe Quijano, Willie Torres, Mario Rivera, and Chivirico Dávila among others.

In 1996, on what would have been the group’s 35th anniversary, an ailing Santiago presented a new incarnation of the group at New York’s Sounds of Brazil (SOB’S). The group played to a full house and was scheduled to record and tour but it was short-lived. The same year, Santiago passed away.

Arguably, The Alegre All-Stars, Volume 1 is one of the greatest jam session LPs ever made. Also, it’s worth noting the all-star concept preceded groups such as  The Fania All-Stars, The Puerto Rico All-Stars, and Descarga Boricua among others.

If you’re not familiar with The Alegre All-Stars, I invite you to listen to the compilation, Te Invita

Significant boost in COVID-19 vaccinations headed to El Paso County this week, public health officials say

El Paso County is expected to receive an increase in COVID-19 vaccines by the tens of thousands this week, a month and a half after El Paso County officials and Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers first raised concerns the county was not receiving its fair share of vaccines.

Public Health Director Susan Wheelan told county commissioners Tuesday the state health department will send nearly 42,000 vaccine doses to El Paso County this week. That includes 2,000 vaccine doses to be used at a new drive-up vaccine clinic at the Broadmoor World Arena that Centura Health will launch Wednesday morning and operate Fridays through Mondays. The county could see between 7,000 to 8,000 additional vaccine doses a week, she said.

The increase in supply is key because eligibility is set to expand again on Friday to include those age 50 and older and other groups, and open to the general public by mid-April.

El Paso County received just 15,000 vaccine doses last week — a smaller amount than weeks prior, Wheelan said, because of the blizzard that ripped through the Front Range over the weekend, shutting down major roadways and forcing the cancelation of several planned vaccine clinics. Two weeks ago, the county received just over 27,000 vaccine doses, data from El Paso County Public Health show.

The increase will allow health providers to administer around 5,300 doses a day, compared to the current daily average of 3,300, Wheelan said.

As the vaccine supply continues to increase, Wheelan said she expects the number of vaccines administered in the county will be proportional to its population in a few weeks.

How quickly the county can vaccinate more people depends on staffing levels at each clinic, she said. El Paso County Public Health has requested the state health department provide additional health care workers at its new building in Fountain during the months of April and May, and the state is sending eight more vaccinators to help at equity clinics across the county this weekend.

“We know that we have one of the largest populations in the state of Colorado … and we need to be ready and poised to offer vaccine as quickly as possible to those that want it,” Wheelan said.

El Paso County Commissioner Longinos Gonzalez said Tuesday he was happy to see the county’s calls for increased vaccine “starting to bear fruit.”

Gonzalez has been a vocal critic of the vaccine disparity and last week submitted a complaint to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office asking they investigate the matter.

Lawrence Pacheco, a spokesman in the state Attorney General’s Office, said by email Monday it “does not comment on complaints or confirm or deny the existence of investigations.”

Commissioner Stan VanderWerf thanked the state health department for their efforts to ramp up vaccine supply to El Paso County.

“It’s not like we always agree on everything, but it is really important to thank anybody that’s really helping us out,” he said. “I think that increase in vaccine is a great indicator of that willingness to support.”

County data show nearly 10% of all residents are fully vaccinated, and 67% of residents aged 70 and older have been vaccinated. Wheelan said Tuesday it’s likely the county has reached its goal to vaccinate 70% of its 70-plus population because county vaccination data does not include doses distributed directly to veterans and members of the military through the federal government or those in nursing homes.

“When you pair the state supplies with the federal supplies, that’s going to bump us up a few percentage (points),” she said. Public Health is working to add the number of federal vaccine supplies to its vaccine data dashboard, she said.

Though the county will still likely face challenges in its fight against the sometimes deadly disease in the coming months, increased vaccine supplies and expanded local vaccination plans provide hope, she said.

“I think this is very encouraging and a lot of progress, given where we were last year,” she said.

The Gazette’s Mary Shinn contributed to this story.
