FRANK BELLO: Memoirs of a Work in Progress

INTERVIEW WITH FRANK BELLO BY GEORGE PACHECO

I’m not kidding when I say that it feels like I know Frank Bello. Oh, of course, I know about Frank Bello the bassist from Anthrax and his history within one of American thrash metal’s Big Four. But in doing this interview with Frank about his memoir, Fathers, Brothers, and Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, and Anthrax, it seems like we had known each other for years. That’s how comfortable this conversation was, and how Bello’s storytelling in his new book reveals a man willing to connect with a heavy metal audience in a unique way. There’s a lot to take in with Frank’s book, and there are no spoilers here, because Anthrax fans, and non-metal fans alike, should pick up the book and feel the same personal connection with how the man told his story.

I absolutely love the book.
Thank you so much. To be honest, this is so different for me. Even yesterday, when we were playing the Welcome to Rockville Festival, so many people came up to me backstage talking about the book, how they connected with it. I’m humbled and I’m thankful that people are getting it and understanding it.

Beyond having a personal connection with the material as a recent father, bassist, and lifelong fan of metal, I felt like you were in the room with me, and the book is very conversational and almost confessional. Was it intentional to have that vibe?
Absolutely, and that was from the beginning when Joel McIver, my co-writer, and I sat down to do this. We’d been talking about doing it for eight years now, so when Joel was finally out of other things to do and he could sit down and do this with me, I thought it was important. He knows so much about my history, and he’s a great writer, so I thought it was important to work with him. He knows how to get the stuff out of me. The first thing I said to him was how I didn’t want to write the obvious “tell all” sort of thing. I’m not into that at all.

I wanted to help people, to pay it forward. I wanted this book to be like you and me sitting in a bar with a beer or coffee in our hands and just talking. So, I’m so proud to hear that from you. I’m so satisfied, because I don’t want to be preaching to anyone. This is just me talking to somebody. I wanted it very casual and conversational, and people are connecting with the stories, because a lot of people have lived these sorts of situations. There’s been a lot of drama in my life and therapy helping me through all of that. It’s a work in progress, so you absolutely hit the nail on the head. I’m very happy that you said that, so thank you.

“EVERYBODY’S A WORK IN PROGRESS, ESPECIALLY ME. I’M JUST TRYING TO MAKE IT TO THE NEXT DAY, WHETHER IT’S THROUGH THERAPY, YOGA, OR MEDITATION.”

The notion of masculinity runs through the book, and there’s a lot of discussion about aggression versus empathy and understanding, like you were trying to find your way and sharing that search with readers.
Wow, so well put. That’s exactly what it is. Everybody’s a work in progress, especially me. I’m just trying to make it to the next day, whether it’s through therapy, yoga, or meditation. I’m finding a lot of people are doing that, so talking about it makes me realize that I’m not cured or healed, but it has to continue through life. I look forward to a better tomorrow. What I don’t want to do, and you’ll understand this as a dad, I don’t want to pass this on to my child. That’s so important to me, not to bring the luggage in my life onto my son. I don’t want to do that, so I’m adamant about getting help, instead of letting the rage take over, which I did. It took me a long time to get to that point, and you can see in the book me trying to figure that out with you, the reader. I love the fact that I’m getting letters from people who identify with it, how it’s a day-to-day thing with them, as well. That’s awesome to hear. We’re working on it together.

As a writer myself, I’m familiar with Joel’s work. Given that he’s written or co-written so many books and biographies, was he always the go-to for collaboration? And at the same time, I never felt his voice in this, even though I knew he worked on it with you. Sometimes you get the feeling that you’re not getting the real person with other books, but I didn’t get it here.
That’s the greatness of Joel McIver. He let me talk and just wanted to get my story. And that’s what I told him in the beginning, and he was hands-off in the best possible way. What he’s great at is getting the stories out of me. He knows a lot of my history, which is awesome, but he’ll light the fuse of a topic, and there were things that came out that I didn’t even know I remembered! He knew the right lines to put in there to open up the dam, and the stories came out. Reliving this stuff, good and bad, it was a thrill. It was right in front of me again and to have it on paper now is very intimidating, because everyone knows my life. I’m raw. I left nothing out and was as honest as I could’ve been. Probably more than I should have, actually. But I thought it was worth it, because it felt cathartic. It’s out now, and I feel happy about that.

How important was it getting Gene Simmons to do the foreword for you?
I never thought it could happen. I’m a diehard KISS fan, and Gene Simmons is a huge hero of mine. Joel brought that to me and we talked about it, and I just couldn’t believe this could be a thing that happened on this earth—Frank Bello, the guy who met Gene Simmons of KISS as a kid in downtown Manhattan? Could that come full circle? Believe it or not, Joel called Gene, and he couldn’t have been happier to do it. You’ve read the foreword. I’ve never heard Gene speak like that about his dad and family. I’ve heard him speak about his mom, God rest her soul, but I thought his story was so poignant and beautifully written. It was touching and it totally connected with me. And on another level, as the Anthrax guy, to have Gene Simmons comment that he likes my bass playing, that sends me back to a 15-year-old Frank Bello, and I’m full of joy. It’s more than just a foreword to me. It’s the full package, and I couldn’t be prouder.

“THIS BOOK IS A TRIBUTE TO STRONG WOMEN, ALL OF THE STRONG WOMEN IN MY LIFE.”

He really said some nice things about you, and I also didn’t know about all of his family background until that recent KISS documentary that aired.
This book is a tribute to strong women, all of the strong women in my life. They took the ball when my family was abandoned, ran with it, and raised me. It’s a tribute to my brother. The women in my life who made me what I am deserve it, from my grandmother to my aunt and my mom—all of the beautiful women in my life. My mom was a single mom, and it’s a big deal. There are a lot of single moms out there, so I say, “Raise a glass. Cheers to you,” because there are a lot of people who go out there and run with that ball, after somebody else dropped it. I think that’s amazing.

You mentioned you and Joel had been talking about this for eight years. What was the process from beyond the idea stage to final product?
I called Joel one day and said, “When are we gonna write a book?” Just kidding around, you know? I’d read his other stuff, and it was incredible, so he just said, “Yup, let’s get it together.” My touring life is very busy, and I couldn’t possibly write a book in a hotel room, waiting for a sound check—your mind’s not there. The opportunity presented itself during Covid, to do this via the internet with a big box of tissues and a bottle of whiskey! The “truth serum,” I call it. There were a lot of laughs in this book too, though, such as the Metallica and Pantera stories. There were a lot of rock ‘n’ roll stories that I’d forgotten about that just kept coming in, and it was so cool to remember how great of a ride it’s been. Writing the book reminded me of that, and how grateful am I for it all.

I really liked how you approached the rock ‘n’ roll stories in the book, hearing these very specific situations, such as touring with Black Sabbath on the Seventh Star tour. Or the bass talk about working in the studio, as opposed to the usual, “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” stuff we get in other books. Hearing the more musician side of things was very refreshing.
The “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” thing? I’m in Anthrax, and I’ve always been a very committed guy with my wife, so you’re not gonna get that from me. There are a lot of great books out there with that stuff, and I had my fun when I was single, but I didn’t feel the need to go into that, because for me, that’s not what life is about. It’s about writing a great song and being a great dad. At the end of the day, I wanna show my 15 year-old son that you can get beat down, but you have to wipe yourself off and move on. It’s really about paying it forward, and if one person who’s feeling like shit can read my book and feels better about their situation, that would mean everything to me.

“I DIDN’T FEEL THE NEED TO GO INTO THAT, BECAUSE FOR ME, THAT’S NOT WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT. IT’S ABOUT WRITING A GREAT SONG AND BEING A GREAT DAD.”

You discuss playing the Big Four Concert in NYC. I was there, and it brought me right back to what was one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen.
It was so special to us. In fact, I was just talking to James Hetfield at the Welcome to Rockville Festival, and I hadn’t seen him in a while. We had a really nice conversation, and it came up again how awesome a time that was. I had to thank him again for having us out on that, because it was so special for all of us. He’s just a great dude, I love him. And it wasn’t only a great time for Anthrax, it was a great time for metal. If you told Frank Bello, the diehard Yankee fan as a teenage boy, that I’d be playing Yankee Stadium? That was hallowed ground for me. I thought the biggest thing Anthrax could ever do was headline Madison Square Garden, so when we did that with the “Clash of the Titans” tour, I thought that was it. You’d never even think Yankee Stadium was in play. How many bands play Yankee Stadium, never mind metal bands? For me, that was a godsend. I still pinch myself, and I’ll cherish that time forever.

I gotta tell you before we go, that I taped the Anthrax episode of “Married…with Children” and watched it over and over again, when I was younger.
(laughs) That was a ball and a dream come true. They flew us out there, gave us a script that we loved, gave us funny lines, and couldn’t have been nicer. There are times where you’re amazed at it all, and you hope it never ends. And believe it or not, that’s one of their most popular episodes! “My Dinner with Anthrax!”

DeWalt 12″ 20V MAX Li-Ion Cordless Brushless Chainsaw + 5Ah Battery

#3

Best price from a retailer this saw has ever been was $100 via Home Depot this past holiday season and that was tool-only, no battery.

So that leaves you at $50 for a 5ah battery which is on the low side you’d pay for one in the grey market (eBay/Craigslist/FB Marketplace).

Great deal if you can get it for $150 picked up.

Great deal! I’ve been trying to sell 5ah batteries on CL and most people will only offer me $40. And the December deal for this bare tool was only a deal for people local, because they wanted something like $18 for shipping. So this comes out pretty good without hassle.

Grainger used to be a stickler about having a business account with them to shop there. I hope they aren’t still like that.

Daily Report – Bitcoin and Market Update (February 14 2022) – The Birb Nest

HTF 1W:

The weekly chart has closed with a candlestick that could be interpreted as a shooting star or a gravestone doji type of formation. The upper wick indicates the bearish pressure and rejection off the highs at the $45500 resistance. The main resistance remains untouched still.

The 50-week average is set around 48000 USD at this moment and it is likely for BTCUSD price action to resist at this area when bitcoin gets there in the price chart. This, combined with the round number resistance of 50000 USD may work as a cluster of resistances, and a supply zone, where distributive process can take place in theory.

BTCUSD is trading around the mid-range region, accounting the 40000 USD – sized range bound movement that bitcoin has been trading within for more than a year. It adds additional psychological barrier to break through from the downside.

The momentum per the Birbicator on the bottom is accelerating in favor of the bulls after the bullish crossover, that’s flipped the Stochastic ribbon into the orange – bullish – mode. It aligns with the ascending histogram bars in the orange mode implying that the key underlying averages (based on Tenkan and Kijun oscillators, derived from the Ichimoku) are converging.

Weekly support is defined at 36-38.8k USD region, while the resistance area seems to be spreading in the upper 40k USD territory.

HTF 1D:

The daily chart shows BTCUSD course slowing down on the momentum of the decline, while sitting around the BaseLine average support.

The above mentioned suggests, that BTCUSD may be attempting to build a base/support at $42000 and so far has been holding above that level with an arguable success. The lower candle shadows imply the demand symptoms present underneath the BaseLine. It doesn’t seem overly significant or strong, though.

In case the average support fails to hold, the next logical support seems to be defined by the BWAP block (the orange box). It is a zone defined by the price and volume. Currently, it’s set at 39-39.8k USD region and it’s automatically adjusted based on the bitcoin’s price action.

That being said, bitcoin is still officially in the bullish mode of the trend and temporary crashes – coming from external factors (Russia – Ukraine) – may find bitcoin flash dip into the 38-39k USD regions (or lower, depending on the scale of a news piece)

HTF 12H:

The middaily chart is hovering above the most important technical support defined by the BPRO.

The CTF Trailer suggests that bitcoin remains on the bullish side where the bulls have had the upper hand and control over the market ever since breaking through the $40365 USD level.

For now, CTF Trailer Stop is set as a flat support level at 40496 USD. It is automatically adjusted invalidation level for the current status of the trend. It means that in case bitcoin records a 12H candle close below that level with clear rejection and violence, then the bulls lose the control, technically, in favor of the bears.

Because the trend is set on the bullish side as of now, the logical assumption may be that this support should hold. Yet, in case of a factual military emergency and war attacks, as well as other external FUD factors, I could see enough of a reason for this level to fail.

Technical analysis alone suggests that bitcoin is rather set for the further upside growth as of now.

MTF 4H:

The MTF chart reveals that BTC is currently knocking on the price action based, strong support line at $41600.

While attempting to build the base at the said 41600 USD region, bitcoin is sitting near the edge of a cliff. In case this support level fails, it is likely to see BTCUSD continue downwards towards the 40400-40800 USD area, defined by the volatility bands. Then, it would risk a fall off a clif towards 36000 USD, where the next clean line in the sand is given by the BPRO.

Momentum Bands suggest that the volatility to be expected for bitcoin in the next hours, days is occurring between the 40.4k USD and 44.6k USD boundaries. Breakout outside either of these could bring a volatility breakout and a more explosive movement with more severe consequences – both in the upwards or downwards directions.

The CTF Trailer Stop is set at 43433 USD level and it is a short-term invalidation level for the ongoing decline. A clean break above this level would result in a breakout confirmation to the upside and a new short-term control taken over by the bulls.

LTF 1H:

The hourly chart displays quite a tight range for the bitcoin’s price action.

The CTF Trailer Stop is set at 42683 USD level and a clean break above this level with a close through would confirm a short-term reversal to the upside.

The Level Lines define only two important levels to look at. It is the support level at 41611 USD and the resistance level at 44840 USD.

This could be interpreted in a way where BTCUSD is currently trading inside a very narrow range bound movement defined between the said 41611 USD and the 42683 USD levels. A breakout to the upside could result in bitcoin continuing higher into the 44840 USD level. A clean rejection of the support and failure to hold it could result in bitcoin reaching the lower levels.

In case of a breakdown, I personally see a technical reason to pay attention to the 38233 USD level in the search of the next support down the hill.

Bitcoin: Net Unrealized Profit/Loss (NUPL)

As the glassnode explains, “Net Unrealized Profit/Loss is the difference between Relative Unrealized Profit and Relative Unrealized Loss. (…) This metric can also be calculated by subtracting realised cap from market cap, and dividing the result by the market cap”

The NUPL ratio has flashed the 0.438 point after a local peak at 0.466 ratio.

This aligns with the local price action of bitcoin in terms of the directions. This is rather a healthy sign for the market as there is no divergence.

Overall, the market status seems to be put in the Optimism (in the upwards trend) or Anxiety (in the downwards trend) mode.

FEAR/GREED INDEX

As the military tensions emerge between Russia and Ukraine, at least based on the media reporting, it is safe to expect potential sentiment decrease as the fears intensify among the investors.

The index is flashing 46 points on the scale. It is assigned under the Fear category.

Like I have mentioned many times already, the crowds are usually right in the middle of trends and usually wrong at the extremes. Here it seems to be the first instance where the sentiment and the momentum back up the direction of the prior breakout – upwards.

Overall, it seems to be a fair approach to NOT be fully exposed to risks during this uncertain week, as long as the threat of military conflicts are there. It makes sense to keep stop losses at the levels described for every time frame – depending on one’s specific interest. At times, it seems that even being 50/50 in/out of position seems like a safer approach to protect both sides of one’s portfolio in case the war intensifies for real. I personally am cautious with what the media present and take all with a grain of salt. Yet, it makes a lot of sense to be safe than sorry. Let’s prepare and be ready for the worst case scenario, because when this does not come true, one would still not lose on that.

More details in video report.

Bill Prohibiting Mugshot Use Prior to Conviction Moves Forward – SweetwaterNOW

CHEYENNE — A bill that would prohibit the release of a person’s mugshot unless they have been convicted of a crime has made it onto the Wyoming House of Representatives’ General File for review.

In a 5-4 vote Monday the Wyoming Legislature’s House Judiciary Committee recommended a do pass with an amendment to House Bill 51 – which prohibits the release of mugshots unless convicted.

The bill is sponsored by HD 17 Representative Chad Banks of Rock Springs who explained to the committee why he created the bill. During his testimony Monday, Rep. Banks said Sweetwater County currently has three news media sources that publish mugshots with arrest reports online every morning. He said this has led to rumors and gossip throughout the community about those in the arrest reports.

“Those mugshots stay around forever regardless of whether those people are ultimately charged or those charges are dropped…” Rep. Banks said.

Banks said Sweetwater County Sheriff John Grossnickle is in support of the bill. He said Grossnickle told him he doesn’t feel the statute allows for him not to provide mugshots and fears legal pushback under the current statute.

Case in Point

Rock Springs business owner Wing Lew spoke in favor of the bill saying he wanted to share his personal experience with the committee. Lew said he was on his way home back in May of 2020 when he was pulled over for failure to maintain a single lane of travel. Lew said he passed the alcohol breathalyzer test both in the field and at the detention center, but failed the field-sobriety test because he couldn’t stand on one leg.

He was then asked to take a blood test at the hospital. On his trip back to the jail, he was told he was bonded out, but they still needed to book him and take his mugshots. He was charged with failure to maintain a single lane of travel and driving under the influence – controlled substance.

Lew said once he was released and he spoke to his attorney, he called two local media outlets and explained what had happened and asked them not to publish his mugshot. They agreed, but he failed to reach a third outlet, which then published his mugshot the next morning.

“I was pretty disappointed and very, very mad,” Lew said.

State toxicology results showed Lew was clean of any drugs or alcohol, but he didn’t get those results back until July. He said he felt ashamed and embarrassed during the time the results were pending. All charges were dismissed after the toxicology report came back.

The media outlets are quick to publish arrests, but they take no responsibility in any publication of dismissals.

Rock Springs Police Chief Dwane Pacheco also favors the bill saying “the court of public opinion is automatically guilty” even when a press release states all parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Pacheco said the system worked in Lew’s case because the officer had probable cause to make the arrest, and the charges were dismissed when the results came back.

The committee decided to amend the proposed bill following the public comment period to make it more clear. The committee didn’t want to limit law enforcement agencies and so it decided to simplify the bill.

The following lines were struck from the bill:

And replaced with the following amendment:

Another amendment was proposed by Rep. Dan Zwonitzer which would have prohibited any publisher from using a photograph of an individual suspected of a crime for financial or personal gain, but is was not approved.

Bill Vote:

Ayes: OAKLEY, PROVENZA, YIN, ZWONITZER, OLSEN
Nays: CRAGO, LAURSEN, RODRIGUEZ-WILLIAMS, WASHUT
