A supermarket truck carrying fruit and vegetables has burst into flames after being struck by a four-wheel-drive, partially blocking the Bruce Highway overnight.
Police said the four-wheel-drive struck the back of the truck just before midnight, and both vehicles exploded into flames at Coles Creek, west of Noosa.
Witnesses said the four-wheel-drive was dragged along by the truck, but the driver was freed from the wreck before the fire took hold.
A police spokesman said the impact of the crash caused a fire, and the truck’s load was destroyed.
Three Queensland Fire crews helped put out the flames, which were still being damped down four hours after the initial crash.
The scene was made safe and fire crews left just after 6am.
Towing company Clayton’s Towing, who were called in to help clean-up the scene, described the crash on social media.
“The truck driver felt a thud and pulled off the road,” the post read.
“He found the four-wheel-drive in the rear of his trailer and helped the 20-year-old female occupant to get clear.
“He then disconnected his prime mover before it all became engulfed in flames.
“Our crew responded with our excavator, skip bins, super tilt, clean machine, and worked with emergency services in getting the scene cleaned up.”
A Coles spokeswoman said the truck was on its way to deliver chilled items and fresh produce to its supermarkets in Rockhampton and Yeppoon.
The company also paid tribute to the driver’s handling of the crash.
“We are extremely proud of the driver’s quick-thinking actions in supporting others involved in the incident,” she said.
A woman in her 20s was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with arm and leg injuries.
The truck’s driver was not injured.
The forensic crash unit is investigating.
