Timing in la verdadera destreza: the three considerations

This article assumes you’re reasonably familiar with a number of terms and concepts in verdadera destreza. If you’re not, visit Movement and Tactics in the Spanish True School, then come on back. While the linked article ably covers the information I discuss below, I arrange the information a little differently, and these varying approaches may together help readers make sense of a very precise way of describing movement, intent, and timing in 17th century Spanish fencing.

Introduction

La verdadera destreza has a very particular way of approaching the concept of timing in combat. Pacheco mentions them for the first time (I believe) in Modo Fácil, his 1625 book on how to test people assessing for the title of Master.

But before we can tackle the timings or considerations, we need to understand some other LVD concepts of action and movement first. Let’s start with the six movements of the blade, then move into the five attacks, and then into dispositive and executive actions.

Six movements of the blade

The six movements of the blade describe where the point of the diestrx’s sword is in relation to their opponent. To slip momentarily into Aristotelian talk, there are three pairs of contraries – in other words, pairs of movement qualities that cannot be simultaneously true. These six movements correspond to the way we think of a 3-dimensional graph with an x, y, and z axis. These movements can be used to describe things other than attacks, but for this discussion, they’re the most relevant when talking about how an attack is structured.

Violent <-> Natural

These terms also hearken back to Aristotelian science. Violent means upward, or from a more modern perspective, against the pull of the earth’s gravity. Natural means downward. You can’t have a movement that is both upward and downward at the same time.

Off-lining <-> Aligning

These terms describe a horizontal motion of the point away and back toward the centre line of the opponent. You can’t move your point away from the centre and towards the centre at the same time.

Backwards <-> Forwards

These terms describe a linear motion directly away from or toward the opponent. Bringing the point away from the opponent means the point approaches the diestrx, and vice versa. You can’t move your point toward the opponent and away from the opponent along the same line at the same time.

Mixed movements

A mixed movement is one that combined 2 or 3 non-contrary movements. For example, a diestrx could raise the point in a natural movement while also taking it off-line and backwards (not a recommended combination of actions unless in dire circumstances!).

The five attacks

The five attacks in the LVD framework are the thrust, the cut, the reverse, the half-cut, and the half-reverse. Let’s see how these are described by the six movements of the blade above.

Thrust

The thrust is composed of only one action – forward. This sets aside, for the moment, circular thrusts, because arguments can be made that the circular action isn’t inherently part of the thrust, and following this rabbit hole detracts from understanding the considerations.

Cut and reverse cut

These are composed of more numerous and spatially greater movements. In a cut, the point takes a mixed natural-offline motion to the diestrx’s inside, coming around behind the diestrx (or at least higher than the diestrx’s head) so it initiates a mixed natural-realigning motion from the diestrx’s outside toward the intended target. The process is the same for a reverse, except the tip begins by dropping to the diestrx’s outside, then moving toward the target from the diestrx’s inside.

Half cut and half reverse cut

These have fewer actions than cuts/reverses, but more than thrusts. In a half-cut, the tip takes a mixed violent-offlining movement to the diestrx’s outside before some adjustments to height. Then the point does a mixed natural-realigning action.

With the components of the five attacks in mind, let’s move to dispositive and executive actions.

Dispositive and executive actions

Within the composition of a given attack, parts of it set up a successful approach of the point toward the target, and other parts are the approach of the point toward the target.

Dispositive actions

Dispositive actions are movements the sword makes that do not bring the point toward the opponent with the intention of striking. An atajo is dispositive, because the diestrx’s sword tip moves offline of the opponent’s centre as the diestrx’s blade subjects the opponent’s, pushing it to one side or the other from above.

Similarly, the first movements of a cut or reverse are dispositive, bringing the point away from the opponent in preparation to bring it back toward the target in the final movements.

Executive actions

Executive actions are movements the sword makes that do bring the point toward the opponent with the intention of striking. A thrust is, in itself, an executive action. The natural and realigning actions of cuts, reverses, half-cuts and half-reverses are all executive.

The three considerations

The three considerations are Get (propio), Give (apropiado), and Steal (transferido). These considerations describe when the diestrx takes an action when in medio proporcionado (in offensive or attacking measure), whether it’s executive (an attack) or dispositive (defence of the right angle, atajo, or conclusion). In Pacheco’s Modo Fácil, he posits them as three subsets of medio proporcionado, or offensive/attacking measure.

Get (propio)

Gets happen when the diestrx chooses to act regardless of the opponent’s state (executive, dispositive, or other). A get can be a thrust immediately following an atajo taken from defensive measure, or a half-cut or thrust after an expulsion, as just two examples. Acometimientos (a fraught term that generally equates to a feint that will connect if the opponent doesn’t do anything about it) often are Gets, but not always.

Give (apropiado)

Gives happen when the diestrx chooses to act when the opponent is making a dispositive action. A give can be transferring an atajo placed on the diestrx back against the opponent, or it could be performing a thrust in the earliest stages of the opponent’s full cut or full reverse, as just two examples.

Steal (transferido)

Steals happen when the diestrx chooses to act when the opponent is making an executive action. A steal can be intercepting an incoming thrust with an atajo and performing a conclusion, distances allowing, or catching the end of an opponent’s cut or reverse with an atajo and proceeding to a general or an appropriate attack, as just two examples.

Chiefs-Rams: Sean McVay Takes Blindside Hit From His Own Player [LOOK]

One of the biggest hits administered during the Kansas City Chiefs Week 12 game against the Los Angeles Rams wasn’t on a player, but rather a coach.

While the special teams units for each team were taking the field for Kansas City’s punt during the opening drive of the game, Rams tight end Roger Carter Jr. was putting his helmet on and making his way onto the field when he accidentally collided with Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay. Carter’s shoulder made contact with McVay’s head, ripped McVay’s headset off, and put him in visible pain on the sideline.

  • Where: The BLACK+DECKER steamer recall is active in the United States.

BLACK+DECKER parent company Empower Brands is recalling about 518,500 of its Easy Garment Steamers after dozens of consumers reported being burned by the product.

The recall notice was posted Nov. 3 on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website and applies to BLACK+DECKER model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers.

According to the recall notice, the recalled steamers can expel, spray or leak hot water during use, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

Empower Brands has received 241 reports of hot water expelling from the steamer, including 32 reports of burn injuries, two of which were second-degree burns, the company says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

This recall involves BLACK+DECKER ModelHGS011 Easy Garment Steamers with date codes 102ZJ through 210ZJ located on the plug blades.

Only steamers without a green dot on the bottom of the package or a notched triangle on the underside of its upper assembly are included in the recall.

Cris Cyborg reacts after Kayla Harrison suffers first career loss at 2022 PFL World Championship event | BJPenn.com

Cris Cyborg has reacted after Kayla Harrison suffered her first career loss at last night’s 2022 PFL World Championship event.

Harrison (15-1 MMA), a two-time Olympic gold medalist in Judo, put her undefeated MMA record on the line against Larissa Pacheco (19-4 MMA) in the headliner of yesterday’s 2022 PFL World Championship event in New York.

The result was a shocking upset win for the Brazilian standout, who earned a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over her American counterpart (48-47 x3).

Prior to signing on for the 2022 PFL season, Kayla Harrison was attempting to lure Bellator featherweight champion Cris Cyborg into accepting a fight with a winner take all offer.

“We can do winner takes all, or we can do when she loses, she gets to keep her purse. If she needs help getting the deal signed, I will call (PFL executives) and ask them, whatever price she wants. I will speak to them on her behalf.” Harrison said on the MMA Hour. “I’ll go through a full (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency) drug testing. I will be drug tested every day from now until the fight. And she doesn’t have to be drug tested at all. The only think I ask is that they allow elbows. So, I can put one through her skull.”

Despite Kayla Harrison’s previous comments, Cris Cyborg was nothing but class while reacting to the Judoka’s first career setback in mixed martial arts.

Justino‘ took to Twitter where she issued the following statement on Harrison’s defeat:

Tonight will only make Judo Kayla a better fighter. One thing I learned after going 14 years undefeated is that sometimes you need to lose to become your best.

Kayla will be back and she will grow from this experience. Congrats @pachecolarissa_ you are a real World Champion ❤️

Rising from Adversity: The Remarkable Journey of Juan Carlos Pacheco

Rising from Adversity: The Remarkable Journey of Juan Carlos Pacheco

Introduction:

Juan Carlos Pacheco is a name that resonates with resilience, determination, and the unwavering spirit to rise above life’s challenges. Born into poverty in a small village in Central America, Juan Carlos faced numerous adversities throughout his life. However, through sheer grit and an unyielding belief in his own potential, he transformed his circumstances and emerged as a celebrated entrepreneur, philanthropist, and inspirational figure.

Early Life and Challenges:

Juan Carlos Pacheco was born on May 12th, 1975, in the humble village of La Esperanza in Honduras. He grew up in a small adobe house with his parents and six siblings. From an early age, Juan Carlos witnessed the hardships faced by his family as they struggled to make ends meet. Money was scarce, and basic necessities such as food and clothing were often luxuries.

Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding him, Juan Carlos possessed an indomitable spirit that propelled him forward. He recognized education as his ticket out of poverty and eagerly pursued knowledge despite the lack of resources available to him. Walking several miles each day to attend a dilapidated school with limited supplies became routine for young Juan Carlos.

Educational Aspirations:

Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a burning desire to escape the cycle of poverty that plagued his family for generations, Juan Carlos excelled academically against all odds. His hard work paid off when he earned a scholarship to attend a prestigious high school in Tegucigalpa.

It was during this time that Juan Carlos discovered his passion for business and entrepreneurship. He devoured books on economics and management principles borrowed from the local library. Inspired by success stories of self-made individuals like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford, he began dreaming big.

University Years:

After graduating from high school with top honors, Juan Carlos set his sights on pursuing higher education. However, the financial burden of attending university seemed insurmountable. Undeterred, he sought out scholarships and grants, determined not to let financial constraints stand in the way of his dreams.

Through perseverance and relentless pursuit, Juan Carlos secured a scholarship to study business administration at a renowned university in the United States. Leaving behind everything he had ever known, he embarked on a new chapter in his life with hope and determination.

Entrepreneurial Journey:

During his time at university, Juan Carlos honed his business acumen and developed an entrepreneurial mindset. He absorbed knowledge from esteemed professors and mentors who recognized his potential and encouraged him to dream big.

Upon graduating with honors, Juan Carlos wasted no time in putting his skills to use. Armed with a burning desire to create positive change in his homeland, he returned to Honduras determined to make a difference.

Juan Carlos founded his first venture, a small agricultural cooperative that aimed to empower local farmers by providing them access to fair markets and resources. His vision was simple yet impactful – create sustainable livelihoods for those who had long been marginalized by systemic inequalities.

Despite facing numerous challenges such as limited capital and bureaucratic hurdles, Juan Carlos’s cooperative flourished under his leadership. It became an exemplar of success within the region, inspiring other communities to replicate their model of economic empowerment.

Philanthropic Endeavors:

As Juan Carlos witnessed the transformative power of entrepreneurship firsthand, he resolved to extend his impact beyond business ventures alone. Recognizing the importance of education as a catalyst for social change, he established scholarships for underprivileged students in Honduras.

The scholarships provided opportunities for deserving individuals who otherwise would have been denied access to quality education due to financial constraints. Through this initiative, countless young minds were empowered to break free from the shackles of poverty and fulfill their potential.

In addition to supporting education initiatives, Juan Carlos also invested heavily in healthcare infrastructure within impoverished communities. He built clinics and hospitals, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of society had access to essential healthcare services.

Recognition and Legacy:

Juan Carlos Pacheco’s unwavering commitment to creating a better world did not go unnoticed. His entrepreneurial ventures and philanthropic endeavors earned him numerous accolades and recognition both nationally and internationally.

In 2015, Juan Carlos was awarded the prestigious Global Entrepreneurship Award for his outstanding contributions to economic development in Honduras. He was also named one of Forbes’ “30 under 30” entrepreneurs, further solidifying his status as a beacon of hope for aspiring change-makers worldwide.

Today, Juan Carlos continues to inspire and empower individuals from all walks of life through his motivational speeches and mentorship programs. He firmly believes that anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, can rise above adversity with determination, resilience, and hard work.

Conclusion:

Juan Carlos Pacheco’s remarkable journey from poverty-stricken beginnings to becoming a celebrated entrepreneur and philanthropist serves as an inspiration to millions around the world. His story reinforces the belief that dreams can be realized despite overwhelming odds when one possesses unwavering determination, an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and an unyielding commitment to making a positive impact on society.

Through his entrepreneurial ventures and philanthropic endeavors, Juan Carlos has transformed countless lives in Honduras while leaving an indelible mark on the global stage. As an author chronicling his extraordinary journey, it is clear that Rising from Adversity: The Remarkable Journey of Juan Carlos Pacheco is a testament to the power of resilience and the triumph of the human spirit in overcoming even the most daunting challenges life presents.

KC Chiefs Place RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire on IR, Update On JuJu Smith-Schuster – Sports Illustrated Kansas City Chiefs News, Analysis and More

The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t been the luckiest in the durability department as of late, seeing multiple players miss varying amounts of time due to injuries. There was still plenty to sort out in that regard when head coach Andy Reid took the podium on Wednesday morning, but Reid was able to provide some additional information about some of his injured players.

Per Reid, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is going on the reserve/injured list following a high-ankle sprain he suffered in Sunday’s 30-27 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. As a result, the third-year man will miss at least the next four weeks while on IR. He joins wide receiver Mecole Hardman on the list, although Hardman has a one-game head start on getting back on the road to returning. With Edwards-Helaire out of the picture, the Chiefs will rely on rookie Isiah Pacheco to lead the way out of the backfield and could even make veteran Ronald Jones active for the first time all year on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Andy Reid said Joe Thuney (left ankle) & Kadarius Toney (hamstring) will not practice today.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire (high ankle sprained) has been added to injured reserve.

Lucas Niang is also back on the active roster.

Additionally, Reid added that wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is back at practice on Wednesday after missing Week 11 due to being in the NFL’s concussion protocol. That’s a major boost for Kansas City, who is without Kadarius Toney on Wednesday as he works through a hamstring injury that caused him to leave the team’s last game early. If Smith-Schuster is able to return to action this week, that would help a receiver room that recently relied heavily on its depth in a grueling divisional game.

Along the offensive line, Reid had a mixed bag of news to share. Left guard Joe Thuney is nursing an ankle injury, and he isn’t practicing on Wednesday. Right tackle Lucas Niang, however, is back on the active roster after a stint on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to begin the 2022 campaign. Niang, who suffered a serious knee injury at the end of last season, is far from guaranteed to be a starter once he’s officially ready to make his return. When asked about Niang’s potential role on Monday, here’s what Reid had to say:

“Yeah, I’ll talk to (General Manager) Brett (Veach). I haven’t talked to Brett today, but we’ll talk on that and just see where we’re at with that. But, he’s made some nice progress over the last couple of weeks. And I’m not telling you he’d be the starter, but I think he’s ready to get in, probably, the two-deep. We’ll have to talk to the kid (Lucas Niang), too.”
