PFL 9 Playoffs Preview: Can Kayla Harrison remain perfect?

Tomorrow, the PFL is hosting their ninth event of the 2022 season and the second of the playoffs. The card goes down in London, England and the best fighter on the roster takes center stage in the main event of the evening.

Former Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time defending PFL champion Kayla Harrison (14-0) will fight as the two seed against the third seed against Martina Jindrová (6-2). Jindrová got a win in The Challenger Series to start 2022 then she picked up two wins during the regular season.

While she looked impressive, she’s taking on another beast tomorrow night. Let’s be honest, anyone that Kayla Harrison fights in PFL is going to be a massive underdog. The competition is just not there and she’s as elite as it comes.

People were disappointed in her first fight when all she did was win a dominating decision. In her second fight, she resumed her form and won by stoppage. It’s going to take a miracle for Jindrová to win. The one person in the PFL that can challenge her is Larissa Pacheco (17-4).

Pacheco will be taking on Olena Kolesnyk (7-4) in the other semifinal matchup. Pacheco is the top overall seed for the second straight year. However, last year she missed weight and lost her spot in the PFL playoffs. She’s fought Harrison twice and lost twice but had good showing.

After losing twice last year (once to Larissa Pacheco), Kolesnyk has bounced back strong winning both of her fights this season. She’s a big betting underdog, but she’s shown great improvements this year.

PFL Featherweights

Arguably the fight with the most heat at PFL 9 is the featherweight semifinal matchup between Chris Wade (22-7) and Brendan Loughnane (24-4). Both men looked like they were on a course to fight each other last season.

However, they both were defeated by Movlid Khaybulaev in the playoffs. With Movlid not in field this year, both men had a shot to get back to each other should they handle business in the regular season. Both men went 2-0 which included Wade’s impressive knockout of Kyle Bochniak.

These two have been talking a lot and tomorrow night they settle who is better and who will be fighting for the PFL featherweight title. The other semifinal matchup features Bubba Jenkins (18-5) and Ryoji Kudo (11-3-1).

After losing to Loughnane to start the year, Kudo bounced back with a first round knockout over Alejandro Flores. That first round knockout earned him enough points to get into the playoffs and face off against Bubba Jenkins.

Jenkins lost in the semifinals last year to Chris Wade. He’s bounced back strong with two good wins this year to earn him this spot in the semifinals. All four playoff matchups tomorrow night have storylines tied to them and they should result in some big time action for the PFL.

City College Center for the Arts Celebrates 60 Years of Orquesta Broadway

NEW YORK (March 2023) — City College Center for the Arts (CCCA) is marking the 60-year history of the legendary, Cuban charanga band Orquesta Broadway on Friday, March 24 at Aaron Davis Hall’s Marian Anderson Theatre, with a special concert featuring multi-award-winning flutist and educator Connie Grossman and esteemed flutist Karen Joseph. Award-winning radio host and Latin music historian Nelson Radhames Rodriguez serves as producer and emcee of the show, which starts at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Tickets are available at citycollegecenterforthearts.org.

Charanga is a term for a popular style of Cuban dance music — or the orchestras who play it — featuring violins, flutes, and various percussion instruments, together with vocalists. Founded in 1963, Orquesta Broadway is one of the oldest charangas, known the world over for its pulsing performances of the Afro-Cuban art form.

“Over the years, City College Center for the Arts has hosted numerous outstanding milestones in the Latin music industry, and I can’t imagine this celebration being elsewhere. Orquesta Broadway’s hypnotic Cuban charanga sound is sure to bring everyone to their feet,” said CCCA Managing Director Gregory Shanck.

“Rhythmic and poetic, the sound of a legendary orchestra preserving the tradition of the Cuban Charanga style. The smooth harmonies of the flute and violins make you dance and move like a feather caught in the wind. Traditional Cuban style persists under the direction of El Maestro Eddy Zervigon, who for more than 60 years has been the leader of the mother of all charangas outside of the island, La Orquesta Broadway,”said Rodriguez.

Orquesta Broadway members include: Eddy Zervigon (director and flute), Ivan Zervigon (American drums), Pablo Mayor (piano), Berny Minoso (bass), Luis Mangual (congas), James Guevara (timbales), David Remedi (violin),  Yunior Terry (violin), Hector Aponte (singer); Jorge Maldonado (singer) and Luis Rosa (singer).

The Marian Anderson Theatre is named after the distinguished African American singer who broke racial barriers and inspired new generations of singers of all backgrounds.

60 Years of Orquesta Broadway at City College Center for the Arts

City College Center for the Arts

The award-winning City College Center for the Arts hosts an ambitious, year-round calendar of professional performances in the historic Aaron Davis Hall. Our mission is to provide a creative arts center and focal point for the City College of New York, building a sense of community within the College, elevating the profile of Aaron Davis Hall in the greater New York area and connecting the College to the surrounding community through the arts.

The 630 seat Marian Anderson Theatre is the largest theatre in Aaron Davis Hall. It was dedicated in 1993 with a tremendous ceremony featuring Harry Belafonte, Jessye Norman, Max Roach, Martina Arroyo, Arthur Mitchell with members of Dance Theatre of Harlem and Phylicia Rashad.

Marian Anderson is remembered as one of the best American contraltos of all time. She was the first African American singer to perform at the White House and also the first African American to sing with New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Ms. Anderson’s achievements, which inspired generations of young black performers, also included a concert before 75,000 listeners at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 arranged by Eleanor Roosevelt after the Daughters of the American Revolution denied the singer the use of the concert hall in their national headquarters.

Orquesta Broadway

Orquesta Broadway is a Cuban charanga-styled band founded by flutist Eddy Zervigón and his brothers Kelvin and Rudy in New York City in 1962. Charanga is an instrumental format of Cuban original music developed at the end of the 19th century that consists of a flute, violins, bass, and a rhythm section composed of conga, timbale, and güiro. The orchestra was named after the avenue most members lived near in Manhattan upon the suggestion of Catalino Rolón, the booking agent of the Palladium Ballroom— the place where the orchestra made its official debut and, also, where four years later it would play the world-famous ballroom’s final dance.

Orquesta Broadway has stood the test of time by becoming not only one of the few surviving charanga bands in New York, but the longest running of its type outside of Cuba. Sixty years after its founding, the ever-in-demand orchestra continues to enjoy an enviable place at the forefront of Latin music in the United States.

The band made its recording debut in 1963 on the Gema label with an album entitled “Dengue,” which included “Como Camina María,” the band’s first hit, followed a year later by a self-titled album, also on Gema. Its next releases, “Arrímate Pa’ Acá” and “Tiqui-Tiquia” in 1965 and 1966 respectively for the Musicor label, solidified the orchestra’s popularity as one of New York’s best and helped catapult the band onto the international scene and a tour to Caracas, Venezuela, in 1967. The band has continued to tour and after over a twenty recordings, its album “Orquesta Broadway 40 Aniversario” was nominated for the Latin Grammy® Awards in 2003.

On June 30, 2012, Orquesta Broadway celebrated its 50th anniversary with an acclaimed concert at New York’s Lincoln Center where Mr. Zervigón and the band were presented with a special proclamation by New York’s City Council. Last year, the group was the main attraction at the Gran Fiesta Cubana concert in Medellin, Colombia, where the band played opposite Cuba’s Orquesta Aragon, New York’s Tipica Novel and Guateque Project, a local aggregation.

Eddy Zervigón, the flutist, musical director, and founding leader of Orquesta Broadway was born in Güines, a small town 48 kilometers southeast of Havana. In 1962, he and his brothers left Cuba and arrived in Miami where they stayed for a brief time before finally settling in New York City, where Mr. Zervigón worked with the bands of Lou Pérez, Johnny Pacheco, Alfredo Valdés Sr., and Arsenio Rodríguez before founding Orquesta Broadway. He has appeared as a guest soloist with Manny Oquendo’s Conjunto Libre, New York’s Grupo Folklórico y Experimental and Eddie Palmieri’s band.

Connie Grossman

Multi-award-winning flutist Connie Grossman, born in Sleepy Hollow, New York, has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad and has studied and performed in Cuba. Classically trained, she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in flute performance from SUNY Purchase and a Master of Arts in Teaching in music education from Lehman College. She performs as a Latin jazz and classical soloist and has played and recorded with many of the top groups in the Latin music scene including cuatro legend Yomo Toro; her own group, CharangaPasion; Charanson; The Latin Jazz Coalition; Cocomama; Juan Carlos Formell; Companhia das Musicas; Conjunto Kathari; Charlie Donato Y Son Ideal. She is also a featured artist with SonSublime since 2000, appearing on their three most recent CDs. Grossman is the recipient of the Bronx Council on the Arts’ BRIO award in the music performance category for one of her original compositions, the New York Latin Music “Pionero” award and the Charanga Legends Lifetime Contribution to Charanga Music Award. She has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Newport Jazz Festival and The Smithsonian Institute, and has been featured in Clave, Latin Beat and Impacto magazines, where her article, “Charanga: Then and Now” was published. Grossman has appeared with Lavar Burton on Reading Rainbow in a feature on jazz musicians as well as other TV appearances. Most recently, she had the honor of being a featured performer along with Mike Manieri and Bernie Williams at the 2018 Pacheco Latin Jazz Festival at Lehman College. The flutist has taught instrumental music in public schools throughout the Bronx and Westchester County for over twenty-five years, is on the faculty of the Westchester Summer Arts Music Center and is currently the Director of the Band program at Edgewood Elementary School in Scarsdale, New York. In December 2021, Grossman released her debut album as a solo artist, Chasing the Sunset, now available on all digital platforms.

Karen Joseph

Native New Yorker Karen Joseph has established herself as one of the premier flutists in the Latin music genre, performing with several groups including Charanga ’76, Charlie Rodriguez’s Conjunto featuring Johnny Pacheco & Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, Hansel y Raul with Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Siglo 20 with Felix “Pupi” LeGarreta, Charanga America, Johnny Almendra y Los Jovenes Del Barrio, Iroko La Banda and Yerason Orquesta Charanga. In addition to leading her own group, MamboCha, she performs with Annette A. Aguilar & Stringbeans, Leopoldo Fleming’s Aggregation and Anthony Carrillo y Yambawa.  She has toured extensively with 10-time Grammy Award Winner Eddie Palmieri y La Perfect II and continues to work with him.

Dividend Aristocrat Stanley Black & Decker (SWK)

Stanley Black & Decker has increased their dividend for 54 consecutive years making it a Dividend Aristocrat, Dividend Champion and a Dividend King. A Dividend King is a dividend paying growth stock that has increased its dividend for more than 50 years. Consequently, this class of dividend paying stocks is the crème de la crème for investors seeking a growing dividend income stream.

Unfortunately, most Dividend Aristocrats are overvalued in today’s expensive market. This is also true of Stanley Black & Decker prior to the last 12 months. However, the company’s stock price has continued to drop to unjustifiable levels making it a strong value play. At its current valuation, the stock offers an earnings yield exceeding 7.5%, a dividend yield of 2.19% and is available at a blended P/E ratio of 13.17. As a result, the company now provides prudent investors a high level of predictability, a margin of safety and the opportunity for double digit future returns.

Newsom relaxes California drought rules

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday relaxed drought rules in California amid a winter season filled with atmospheric river storms, flooding and a massive Sierra Nevada snowpack — soaking conditions that followed three dry, grueling years that had been marked by water shortages, extreme wildfires and heat waves.

At an appearance at a groundwater recharge project in Yolo County, Newsom announced the end of state regulations he put in place last March that required cities and water agencies to impose water restrictions such as limits on the number of days a week residents could water lawns and landscaping. The decision now will be up to each local area in the coming weeks and months about whether to drop those restrictions.

“Are we out of the drought?” Newsom said. “Mostly. But not completely.”

Due to brimming reservoirs and the big snow pack, the state Department of Water Resources also announced Friday that it will increase water deliveries through the State Water Project to cities and farms from 35% of their requested amounts to 75%, a number that could still increase later this spring.

The governor did not lift the drought emergency, however, that he declared in October 2021 for all 58 California counties.

Karla Nemeth, director of the State Department of Water Resources, said in an interview that her department will make recommendations on April 28 to Newsom about which counties should have the drought emergency declaration lifted.

“We’ve had so much rain and snow this year that we have emerged from drought,” Nemeth said of much of the state. “But we know that weather has been moving between extremely dry and wet conditions, and that extremely dry conditions can re-emerge. Californians need to conserve water as a new way of life, and California also needs to continue investing so that when dry conditions return we are more secure in our water supplies.”

Nemeth said multiple parts of the state, including the Bay Area, are likely to be removed, while other places, such as the Klamath Basin near the Oregon border, and parts of Southern California that are heavily dependent on the depleted Colorado River, are less likely.

Having a drought emergency declaration in place allows the state, under its emergency powers, to fast-track some water projects, such as well drilling, water transfers, or groundwater banks, without the California Environmental Quality Act, which often requires long studies. It also allows state agencies to waive competitive bidding rules for drought-related emergency projects.

“We’re not eliminating that fast track authority,” Newsom said. “I want to keep the momentum.”

With the extremely wet winter, Newsom had little choice but to begin relaxing drought rules, said Jay Lund, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Davis.

“You have to do it,” he said. “When it’s raining out, you can’t ask customers to be troubled with saving a lot of water when the reservoirs are full. It starts to jeopardize credibility with the public. It has some appeal to some environmentalists, but you don’t want to be crying wolf. It makes people not trust the government.”

On Thursday, 64% of California was no longer in a drought, up from just 3% three months ago, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a weekly report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The report, which looks at reservoir levels, groundwater, soil moisture, rainfall and other factors, showed all Bay Area counties, and all coastal counties, along with most of the Sierra Nevada, completely drought-free.

The Sacramento Valley and the Shasta region, along with Inyo, Kern, Riverside, Imperial and San Bernardino counties in Southern California, all still had some level of drought, the report showed.

Several of Newsom’s actions Friday were symbolic. He ended a state campaign asking people to voluntarily cut water use 15%, although he said that they should never waste water. Water agencies have pushed for the state to relax such rules. When they sell less water, they lose revenue.

Newsom also left in place state rules that ban wasteful water practices statewide, such as hosing down sidewalks and driveways, washing cars without a shut-off nozzle on the hose, or allowing water to run into the street from lawn irrigation.

California’s three-year drought was among the most severe on record, with widespread water shortages, record heatwaves and deadly wildfires. But since January, arid landscapes have given way to an abundance of water in many areas.

(Photo: Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

On Friday, the state’s major reservoirs were nearly all at or above their historical averages. Many have been rising so fast that operators are releasing water to reduce flood risk later this spring as snows melt. Shasta Lake, the largest, near Redding, was 78% full Friday, while the second-largest, Oroville, in Butte County, was 82% full, and San Luis, a key reservoir east of Gilroy, was 94% full and rising.

Since Christmas, a parade of enormous snow storms has paralyzed much of the Sierra Nevada — the source of nearly one-third of California’s water supply. On Monday, the snow depth reached the 2nd largest level since 1946 at the UC Central Sierra Snow Lab at Donner Summit, hitting 56 feet of accumulation for the season, behind only 1952, which saw 67 feet. Another 2 to 4 feet is forecast from a new storm next Tuesday.

The huge snowpack will fill reservoirs when it melts in the coming months. It is already raising major flood concerns, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley.

“None of us could have imagined a few months ago that we’d be where we are today,” Newsom said.

The remarkable turnaround came after three very dry and difficult years for California.

The drought began in the winter of 2019-2020, created by the same kinds of relentless high-pressure ridges off the Pacific coast that blocked storms during the state’s 2012-2017 drought. Rainfall levels in many Northern California cities reached barely one-third of their historical averages in the 2019-2020 winter, and a meager Sierra snow pack on April 1, 2020 measured only 54% of normal.

That summer, 4.3 million acres burned across the parched state, the most in modern California history. Fires driven by heat waves, lightning and strong winds killed 33 people and destroyed more than 11,000 structures statewide in 2020. They ravaged nearly all of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California’s oldest state park, in the Santa Cruz mountains, and turned skies across the Bay Area an eerie orange hue amid apocalyptic choking smoke.

The two following years were nearly as dry. The Caldor Fire burned nearly 1,000 homes on Lake Tahoe’s southern flanks in 2021. Marin County’s reservoirs almost ran dry and the county’s main water district considered building a $100 million emergency pipeline across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to keep from running out of water.

Newsom asked urban residents to voluntarily cut water use 15% in July, 2021, but did not impose mandatory water restrictions with penalties fines for water districts and cities that fell short, as former Gov. Jerry Brown had done during the prior drought. By October, 2021, Newsom declared a statewide drought emergency.

Last year, hwaves exacerbated by the drought and climate change sent the mercury to 118 degrees in Calistoga on Sept. 7, the hottest temperature ever recorded in the 9-county Bay Area. Livermore hit 116, with San Jose reaching 109. The extreme heat also stressed the state’s power grid as air conditioning use spiked electricity demand to all-time highs.  Widespread water restrictions were put in place across the state.

Newsom has come under fire, particularly from farm interests and Republicans, but also from some Democrats, for not doing more during his first four years in office to build new water storage projects, particularly at a time when the state has had record budget surpluses. Earlier this month he signed an executive order streamlining permitting until June 1 for projects that use floodwaters to recharge groundwater aquifers.

But voters approved Proposition 1 in 2014, a bond that included $2.7 billion for new storage. So far, none of the seven local projects — a mix of reservoirs and new groundwater banks — that the state approved for matching funding has yet started construction. Some, like a proposed expansion of Los Vaqueros Reservoir by the Contra Costa Water District, are moving forward and expected to begin construction soon. Others, like the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s plan to build a new reservoir at Pacheco Pas in Santa Clara County, are mired in lawsuits and cost overruns, and may never be built.

Officials at Oroville Dam in Butte County opened the flood gates on Friday March 10, 2023 and sent water down the spillway at California's second-largest reservoir for the first time in four years. The reservoir, which is 82% full, was being lowered to make room for incoming storms and melting snow to reduce flood risk downstream. State water officials said they expect it to fill to the top later this spring. (Photo: Fred Greaves / California Department of Water Resources)

It only took one season for Isiah Pacheco to become a Super Bowl champion, but he still remembers where he came from.

This week, the Kansas City Chiefs running back Pacheco returned to Rutgers University, his alma mater, to attend a basketball game against the Michigan Wolverines. Pacheco was given quite the welcome and became the star of the show in the student section. An awesome video went viral of Pacheco (wearing a gold hoodie) having the time of his life among the Rutgers students. Take a look.

Pacheco also got a warm greeting from New Jersey governor Phil Murphy.

‘We are so proud of you,’ @GovMurphy told newly crowned #SuperBowlLVII champion Isiah Pacheco at #Rutgers tonite.

‘All of New Jersey is proud of you.’ pic.twitter.com/ABq6uA6t2v

— Andrew Mills (@AndyMills_NJ) February 24, 2023

The 23-year-old Pacheco spent four seasons at Rutgers before being drafted in the seventh round by the Chiefs last year. He rushed for 830 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie and was Kansas City’s top ball-carrier during their Super Bowl run.

While Michigan won 58-45, Pacheco did more than enough to entertain the Rutgers crowd. Dancing really appears to be his thing too since Pacheco also busted out some moves in the locker room after winning the Super Bowl.
