Begum Samina Alvi said that in Pakistan approximately 90000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed every year while mortality rate due to the fatal disease was also very high.

Late diagnosis was the major cause of high mortality rate due to breast cancer in the country, she noted adding that it was a social stigma or taboo to speak about the disease and that results into delayed diagnosis, enhanced complications and in a number of cases into death of the patient.

Breast cancer was not an incurable disease as it had over 98% survival rate if diagnosed early in the first or second stage, she said and stressed on mass awareness about the disease to sensitize women and girls about signs, self examination, diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

“Well being and welfare of a home depends on women and your health is very important so take care of yourself as examining yourself is very simple and takes only five minutes in a month,” Begum Alvi urged the women.

She said that awareness campaign regarding breast cancer was being carried out from years and a number of philanthropists, educational institutions, civil society activists and a large number of people from different walks of life had joined it.

Elizabeth Warren Wants To Keep Big Tech From Taking Over Your Car

The senator is asking the FTC and the DOJ to watch out for Amazon’s, Apple’s, and Google’s moves into your dashboard.

The Democratic senator from Massachusetts recently sent a six-page letter to the country’s top antitrust enforcers — Lina Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission, and Jonathan Kanter, who heads up the antitrust division of the Department of Justice — asking them to look at Google, Amazon, and Apple’s expansion into the automotive industry. She hopes taking action now will prevent them from taking over our cars in the way they already have our computers, phones, and homes.

Big Tech is well on its way to taking over our dashboards as well, turning them into giant versions of smartphones and Echos. This would give them yet another rich source of data to use and another industry to control, and make it that much harder for other companies to compete with them.

“I’ve been ringing the alarm about Big Tech’s growing dominance across our economy, and their expansion into the automotive industry is the latest effort to stomp out competition in yet another sector,” Warren told Recode. “This has potential consequences for American workers, developers, and consumers — and could lead to less innovation and higher prices.”

This is Warren’s first letter to the FTC and DOJ about this matter, but she’s not the only person who is worried here. Last April, 11 Democratic members of the House wrote a similar letter to Khan and Kanter, and several antitrust and consumer rights groups sent a letter last January to Khan, Kanter, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI), who head up the Senate and House antitrust subcommittees, respectively.

In the letter, Warren writes that Big Tech wants to be a “one-stop shop for automakers — for everything from data collection, cloud storage, and analytics to in-car navigation to voice assistants to autonomous driving capabilities.”

That said, these companies are trying to capitalize on an opportunity of the automotive industry’s own making. Car companies have been providing notoriously bad infotainment systems for years, with sometimes clunky and confusing in-dash offerings that pale in comparison to the maps and music people can pull up on their phones. Ford even agreed to pay $17 million in 2019 to settle a class action lawsuit over how awful its Microsoft-powered MyFord Touch system was. Now, they’re increasingly turning to Big Tech to provide what they can’t or won’t.

“Carmakers need to use Big Tech’s digital ecosystem in order to offer more and better digital features to their customers,” Pedro Pacheco, a car industry analyst at Gartner, told Recode this past summer.

That’s why almost every new car sold has support for Google’s Android Auto, Apple’s CarPlay, or Amazon’s Alexa, if not all three. Industry analysts believe Google’s Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS) will be in 70 percent of new cars by 2028, a huge and rapid leap from the less than 1 percent of new cars it’s in today. (Android Auto and AAOS are not the same thing; Android Auto runs on your Android phone, which connects to your car; AAOS is built into the car itself.) When you’re in the driver’s seat, Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant are riding along with you.

Warren says that while people “deserve lower costs and greater choices” in their cars, she believes allowing Big Tech to dominate that space will “likely have the opposite effect” in time.

The letter accuses Big Tech of using some of the same tactics it has used in other industries to solidify its place in this one. Amazon boasts that its Alexa Auto makes it easy for users to order Amazon products from the comfort of their car while they’re waiting at a red light, or listen to an audiobook from Amazon’s Audible while they’re sitting in traffic. If a carmaker wants to offer Google Maps, it has to purchase Google Automotive Services, which includes Assistant and Play Store, a practice Warren likens to Microsoft’s bundling of Internet Explorer and Windows, which gave Microsoft a huge share of the internet browser market but also got it in a lot of antitrust trouble in the late 90s.

Google and Amazon have entered into agreements with carmakers to include their offerings pre-installed and by default, which Warren compares to Google’s agreement with Apple to offer Google Search as the default search engine on Apple’s Safari browser. And, she notes, Apple forces third-party developers to go through and get approved by it before their apps can be offered to users through CarPlay, just as it does with the App Store on mobile devices.

“Allowing Big Tech companies to cement their exclusive control over the terms of auto app competition could stifle a nascent industry,” she writes.

Warren also touches on the data that these companies can collect from our cars, and how it may give them a rich and exclusive source of data they may use to assist in their autonomous vehicle projects. And that, in turn, may well give them a future competitive edge over the same car companies that are using their services now. Big Tech isn’t just trying to get into other companies’ dashboards; it’s making its own, too.

Finally, Warren warns that Big Tech companies are buying up potential and actual competitors, from Google’s acquisition of Maps competitor Waze to Amazon’s interest in self-driving vans and trucks to power its delivery services.

The three companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Warren says this is a chance for antitrust enforcers to get ahead of companies that threaten to monopolize an industry rather than acting only after that monopolization has already happened and when it’s far more difficult to do anything about it. Kanter and Khan both have expressed the desire to be more proactive about anti-competitive threats, but that’s easier said than done. In the US, antitrust laws — or, really, the courts’ interpretations of them — favor businesses, and cases may drag on for years, if not decades. But those efforts do sometimes get results; after all, Microsoft did ultimately agree to unbundle Internet Explorer from Windows.

Warren’s letter won’t do anything on its own. But if Big Tech companies see that their expansion into cars might be checked before it really starts, they may address some of her concerns before they’re forced to. We’ve seen Apple loosen some of its grip over its phones in recent years, like making it easier to pick which search engine you use in its Safari browser and allowing you to delete most of Apple’s built-in apps from your iPhone’s home screen. They may also be more reluctant to acquire companies if they feel that the chances those acquisitions will be challenged are high enough.

We’ve also seen attempts in Congress to address some of these concerns, like antitrust bills that would ban self-preferencing and open up app stores. Those bills appear to be dead for now, but there’s always a chance they’ll come back next Congress.

“The FTC and DOJ don’t have to wait until there’s a problem to take action,” Warren says. “Now is the time to prevent Big Tech from strangling competition in the automotive industry before it’s too late.”

Former Baldwin Park officials conspired in Rialto water district election scheme, DOJ alleges – San Gabriel Valley Tribune

A federal investigation into corruption in Baldwin Park has revealed that a former councilman allegedly agreed to help the city’s  deposed police chief obtain a seat on a Rialto-based water district board in exchange for promises that the councilman would be hired to a high-paying administrative post in the district.

The alleged quid pro quo scheme between then-Councilman Ricardo Pacheco and ousted Police Chief Michael Taylor was revealed in documents unsealed by the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday, Oct. 7, in its case against former San Bernardino County Planning Commissioner Gabriel Chavez.

Chavez has agreed to plead guilty to a federal bribery charge for acting as an intermediary for payoffs from cannabis companies to Pacheco. The FBI raided Chavez’s home in October 2020, and Chavez resigned as a planning commissioner about two weeks later.

The DOJ bribery probe is ongoing, but neither Pacheco nor Taylor has been charged in connection with activities related to the West Valley Water District, which serves 82,000 customers in the communities of Bloomington, Colton, Fontana, Rialto, parts of unincorporated areas in San Bernardino, and Jurupa Valley in Riverside County.

In an unrelated case, Pacheco agreed to plead guilty in June 2021 to a federal bribery charge for accepting $37,900 from an undercover police officer working as an FBI informant in return for voting in favor of the Baldwin Park Police Association’s 2018 contract with the city. Under his plea agreement, Pacheco agreed to continue cooperating in the federal investigation.

Taylor, who was fired as Baldwin Park’s police chief in September 2016 but rehired a year later, indeed captured a seat on the water district’s board of directors with fundraising help from Pacheco. And Taylor subsequently engineered the hiring of Pacheco to a newly created assistant general manager’s post paying nearly $190,000 a year, the DOJ alleges.

Reached by telephone and provided a copy of the DOJ document via email, Taylor — identified as “Person 2” in the document — did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

SCNG investigation

The revelations follow an exhaustive yearlong investigation by the Southern California News Group that began in 2019 and included a review of more than 3,000 pages of financial documents and hundreds of pages of court records.

The investigation uncovered myriad problems within the West Valley Water District, including the employment of consultants without contracts, hiring managers and consultants with dubious backgrounds and legal difficulties, and the spending of more than $740,000 to settle lawsuits with former employees. The findings were later confirmed by a California State Controller’s Office audit.

Plan hatched

It was in July 2017, when Pacheco and Taylor met at Baldwin Park City Hall, that they hatched their plan. Taylor told Pacheco he planned to run for a seat on the West Valley Water District’s board of directors, but needed his help, which Pacheco took to mean fundraising, according to the Justice Department.

Taylor told Pacheco the water district had job openings, and that if he helped get him elected he would try to get him a job there. “Specifically, (Taylor) said that once he got elected to the Water District’s Board, ‘we’ll get you in,’ ” the DOJ stated.

Pacheco told federal investigators he collected $20,500 in monetary contributions for Taylor’s campaign for the water board seat, representing almost the entirety of the $21,797 in contributions Taylor received. Most all the contributions Pacheco secured came from individuals with business before the city of Baldwin Park, according to the Justice Department document.

For example, his California Education Coalition political action committee contributed $7,000 to Taylor’s campaign that came from a marijuana company owner, according to the Justice Department affidavit and Taylor’s campaign finance reports.

About a month later, in October 2017, Taylor sent Pacheco a text message saying, “Okay, we are making our big push and I really need 5K bro. Otherwise I’m completely broke this week and we are done,” meaning that the success of Taylor’s campaign depended on Pacheco’s help with fundraising, according to the Justice Department.

The following day, Pacheco solicited South Gate developer Michael Galanakis for a $1,500 donation to Taylor’s campaign, according to the DOJ affidavit. Galanakis did not respond to a phone call seeking comment.

Pacheco’s PAC also contributed about $4,800 of in-kind contributions to Taylor’s 2017 campaign, which was used for, among other things, “hit piece” mailers against the opponents of Taylor and then water district board President Clifford Young, identified in the document as “Person 5, an elected official.”

The hit pieces, according to the Justice Department, were allegedly created by Baldwin Park City Attorney Robert Tafoya, identified as “Person 1” in the court filings and described as having “served as the Baldwin Park City Attorney since in or around December 2013.” The DOJ noted that Tafoya was seeking a contract for legal services with the water district at the time.

Along with Pacheco’s employment contract, one of Taylor’s first orders of business after his election was nominating Tafoya as the district’s new legal counsel. Tafoya was hired and still serves as an independent consultant providing legal services to the district, said agency spokeswoman Socorro Pantaleon.

The in-kind contributions from Pacheco’s PAC went undisclosed by Taylor’s election committee in an effort to conceal Pacheco’s agreement with Taylor, according to the unsealed documents.

As part of Taylor’s demands, the DOJ said, he told Pacheco that his hiring at the West Valley Water District also was contingent on Pacheco persuading the Baldwin Park City Council to rehire Taylor as police chief.

Taylor wins seat

On Nov. 7, 2017, Taylor was elected to the West Valley Water District’s board of directors. The next day, Pacheco sent Taylor a text pitching the position he wanted with the district: “Assistant GM.” Taylor responded, “Really? We will talk if my contract (for police chief) goes through,” according to the Justice Department document.

The City Council had fired Taylor as Baldwin Park police chief in September 2016 without cause. Council members later said his firing came amid an investigation into allegations that several Latino police officers were passed over for promotions, but an investigation found no evidence of discrimination.

According to the Justice Department, Pacheco — working to make good on his part of the deal — pressed a councilwoman to vote in favor of a new employment contract for Taylor, which also included a clause that he could be fired only if he were convicted of a felony.

Pacheco texted the unnamed councilwoman, saying, “I just need your support,” “Plus he just won in a large water district” and “Think about the possibilities,” referring to the potential financial benefits Pacheco and the councilwoman could reap if Taylor was rehired, according to the Justice Department.

In November 2017, the City Council voted 3-2 to rehire Taylor, this time at nearly $22,000 more than what he made when he was let go. Councilwomen Susan Rubio and Cruz Baca voted against the appointment.

About a month after the West Valley election, a victory celebration was held on Dec. 7, 2017, at the Sierra Lakes Golf Club in Fontana, where Taylor and Young, a political ally of Taylor’s, told Pacheco they would make good on their promise to provide him with a position at the water district, according to the DOJ document.

On March 29, 2018, the water district’s board of directors, on a 4-0 vote with Taylor abstaining, approved Pacheco’s employment contract as assistant general manager, which called for a base salary of $189,592 and his own vehicle.

The minutes from that board meeting confirmed that Pacheco’s hiring was approved during closed session, and that Taylor had recused himself from voting. The Justice Department said Taylor abstained to conceal the quid pro quo arrangement with Pacheco.

Just more than a year later, in May 2019, Pacheco was placed on administrative leave for undisclosed reasons, then fired in November 2019. Water district officials never confirmed whether Pacheco’s leave and subsequent forced resignation was in connection with the federal corruption probe.

Pacheco’s separation agreement with the district allowed him to walk away with a severance package that included nine months of pay but no benefits.

Water district responds

The latest revelations in the sweeping federal corruption probe in several Southern California cities comes months after Taylor and Young resigned from the water district’s board of directors, Taylor on July 27 and Young on Jan. 3.

Young died in August.

Pantaleon, the agency’s spokeswoman, said in an email Tuesday that Taylor did not have a separation agreement with the district.

“We are deeply disturbed by this information and will remain vigilant in monitoring the case,” she said. “Our current board and staff priority is in protecting the ratepayers and providing safe and high-quality water.”

Pantaleon said that the water district is not involved in the federal investigation.

  • ASIN mapping: Vendors can create an ASIN catalog to map to ARA. When they do so, they must also configure the ASINs to match the ARA report structure. They must wait until the dashboard reflects the changes before seeing them.

Why are there Unowned ASINs in the dashboard?

An ASIN mapping is a likely root cause. If ASINs are correctly mapped to ARA via the correct vendor hierarchies, vendor groups, and attribute setups, they may appear correctly in ARA dashboards. The spokesperson said, “All Day Care Centres and Day Care Providers in Bermuda must be licenced and registered to care for children in Bermuda. To be licenced or registered, the Day Care Centres and Providers must comply with the Children Act 1998and the Day Care Centre Regulations 1999. The Child Care Regulation Programme is the Section within the Department of Health that licences Day Care Centres and Registers Day Care Providers [persons who care for up to three children in their home].

“The STARS inspection will occur every two years. However, their STARS inspection is deferred within the first year of operation with Newly Licenced Centres or Newly Registered Providers.

“Along with their application, every Centre or Provider must also submit supporting documentation such as a fire certificate, liability insurance and staff educational qualifications, and current CPR certificates.”

Minister Wilson added: “The Ministry of Health takes the safety and development of our children extremely seriously, which is why we have dedicated resources to this area. It is also why the Ministry is appealing to parents to join our efforts. We need to hear parents’ concerns about their children’s care. We will investigate any issues with a daycare centre or home confidentially.

“Parents should expect good, safe care for their children. Please ensure that your home daycare providers are registered and daycare centres are licenced by the Ministry of Health. If they are not registered or a Day Care Centre is not licenced, there will be no way for us to guarantee quality in the environment and the person caring for your children. Licensed centres and registered home providers are listed on gov.bm.”
