Brazil’s new president, Lula da Silva, vows to hold accountable ‘fascist’ Bolsonaro supporters who stormed Brazil’s Congress – mirroring Trump-inspired January 6th invasion of US Capitol, insisting election was ‘stolen’ – KonnieMoments

Brazil new President Lula da Silva has vowed to hunt down and punish ‘fascist’ Bolsonaro supporters who stormed Brazil’s Congress in the capital Brasilia on Sunday

An estimated 3,000 people stormed Brazil’s Congress on Sunday in protest of left-wing President Lula’s win

The protesters, right-wing supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro believe the election was ‘stolen’

Emerging footage of the chaos is reminiscence of the Trump-inspired January 6th invasion of US Capitol in 2021

They believe President Lula’s victory was stolen from his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro a right-wing politician

Bolsonaro the loser in the tight election that went to a runoff, left Brazil for Florida 48 hours before the Jan 1, inauguration

His supporters had been demanding that the military get involved in the row before the violent scenes

Thousands of people invaded the Congress building, the Supreme Court, as well as the presidential palace while setting of smoke flares in the streets

President Lula da Silva has branded the protestors ‘vandals and fascists’, and has sworn to hunt them down and mete out justice

Newly sworn-in Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has branded protestors who stormed Congress as ‘vandals and fascists’ – with the scenes being similar to that of Trump supporters January 6 take-over.
The supporters of far-right ex-President Jair Bolsonaro who descended on the nation’s capital Brasilia on Monday, invaded the Congress building, the Supreme Court, as well as the presidential palace calling for the military to overthrow current President Luiz Inacio.
Inacio, a Left-wing veteran politician and former two-term president, has only been in power for a week, after being inaugurated a week ago, but supporters of the his predecessor claim the election was stolen.

— David Adler (@davidrkadler)

Footage of the chaotic scenes in Brasilia bore eerie similarity to the scenes of right wing activists storming the US Capitol building on January 6th, 2021, after claims by former President Donald Trump that the election he lost to Joe Biden was instead stolen.
The vociferous protesters surged their way into the buildings, smashing windows as they forced their way into the Congress building, the Supreme Court and presidential palace.

Reacting to the debacle, President da Silva remarked that there was ‘no precedent in the history of our country’ and called the violence the ‘acts of vandals and fascists’. He is currently on an official state trip in São Paulo.
Supporters of Bolsonaro can be seen breaking through the barriers and entering the building.  It comes after da Silva, known as Lula, defeated far-right Bolsonaro in an October election.
Others demonstrators were gathering outside the presidential palace and Supreme Court, although it was not immediately clear whether they had managed to break into the buildings.

Bolsonaro supporters have been protesting against Lula da Silva’s electoral win since October 30. Shocking footage shows how gangs of protestors assaulted a police officer arriving the scene on horseback, throwing him off his mount to the ground.
Local media have estimated that 3,000 donning yellow and green T-shirts and holding Brazilian flags, people are involved in the protests.
Police deploying tear gas, did nothing to to deter the protestors who had been blocking roads, setting vehicles on fires and congregating outside military buildings, asking armed forces to intervene in the election.

— Ana Flor (@Ana_Flor)

Lula was not in the capital as the chaos unfolded. The president who was in Sao Paulo, came on live TV, and he was clearly angry and gave stern warnings to the rioters.
He called them fascists, ultra-rightists and said that this vandalism is unprecedented in Brazil’s history. He laid blame for the action of the rioters squarely on the shoulders of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula blamed the mayhem on his opponent – it was his rhetoric that goaded his supporters into these actions.
Ex-president Bolsonaro never conceded loss, and his supporters say that the election was rigged and his mandate stolen, despite there being no proof of electoral malfeasance.

— André Janones (@AndreJanonesAdv)

Those who broke into the building are also accused of attacking police vehicles which secured the building, as well as protection barriers.
Bolsonaro left Brazil for Florida 48 hours before the end of his mandate, repeatedly questioned, without evidence, the credibility of the country’s electronic voting system.
Protesters have climbed a ramp which gives access to the roof of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate buildings.
Lula’s Workers Party asked the office of the top public prosecutor to order public security forces to act in containing the demonstrators.
Many of the protestors were seen roaming free in the presidential palace, and it appeared that the number of security personnel inside the building were limited.

Justice Minister Flavio Dino said: ‘This absurd attempt to impose their will by force will not prevail.
‘The government of the Federal District has ensured there will be reinforcements. And the forces at our disposal are at work.’
Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco added that he was in permanent contact with Brasilia’s governor, Ibaneis Rocha, and that the entire police apparatus had been mobilized to control the situation.
Bolsonaro has not yet condemned or commented on the ongoing situation.

Bolsonaro is not in the country. He left for Florida, days before Lula’s inauguration, which was, as you said, just one week ago, in the same exact spot in Brasilia. Bolsonaro is in Florida, and it’s unclear whether or when he is coming back to Brazil.
Lula has appointed a new head of security for the federal district, the capitol, and he said that the new head of security will be reporting directly to him.

Korea – Europe Forum | The Global Transformation of Geopolitics and Geoeconomics: Responses from Korea and Europe

The war in Ukraine, US-China competition, and global supply chain restructuring have presented significant complex crises for European and Asian countries. At a moment of historical change, security is becoming more tightly interconnected across different regions while new types of economic alliances are reshaping individual countries’ national strategies for ensuring high-tech supremacy. This set of two roundtable discussions will explore the key features shaping the current global transformation and analyse the common challenges faed by Europe, Asia, and the Republic of Korea.

In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, NATO is expected to play a more significant role in European and global security and further cooperate with Asia-Pacific partners such as Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. As the Indo-Pacific has become a new pivot of global geopolitics, new types of alliances and partnerships are being pursued by European, Asian, and North American counterparts. Peace-building on the Korean Peninsula needs to incorporate this new global security dynamics in a way that recognises the growing need for increased cooperation between regional and extra-regional partners. This session will explore the opportunities for closer cooperation between European countries, regional defence organisations and their East Asian counterparts, including the Republic of Korea (ROK)

The crises in Ukraine has further complicated the linkages between global supply chains. While US-China rivalry has become a new normal, techno-nationalism in high tech sectors has begun to pose a fundamental challenge to existing trade architectures and long-standing conventions that underpin the global economic order. Semiconductors, batteries, rare earth materials as well as energy resources are rapidly becoming securitized. Building new rules and norms in global supply chain has become a common challenge to Europe and Asia. The ongoing war in Ukraine and growing tensions are also encouraging a new wave of cooperation in defence industries between Asia and Europe. Korea and Europe need to reshape and redefine their economic strategic partnerships in dealing with those challenges.

Former DC Writer Chuck Dixon Says Wokeness By Itself Isn’t What Is Killing Comics

Looking at the modern media landscape, many of us and our devoted readers determine that wokeness is what’s killing so much of our entertainment and pop culture — including comics, the medium which arguably will go down as ‘patient zero’ for this trend — with blandly sophomoric and agenda-driven storytelling.

However, a tenured pro who witnessed the decline is saying “Not so fast” on that diagnosis.

In episode #134 of his Q&A series, Chuck Dixon was asked his opinion about the comic book industry and what form it could take if it wasn’t for woke content, and his answer might surprise you. “I don’t think it would be all that different,” he said, adding that in his view it was people lacking talent gaining power that sparked the decline.

They only latched onto wokeness later, Dixon says, and then began hiring others who have a stronger embrace of the ideology at least on the surface.

“You know, a lot of this stuff is job security,” the author explained. “You’ve got to go along. You’ve got a lock step. You’ve got to march along with the rest. You’ve got to raise your fist in anger with everybody else — even if you don’t feel angry because you don’t want to be… you want to conform and that’s what this is about. It’s about conforming.”

Dixon elaborated, “It’s about bending the knee and in order to keep their jobs a lot of the people in charge — particularly [Marvel and DC] — conformed because you can’t be speaking out; you’ll lose your job.”

“So I think wokism just filled the void of indifference that most of the editors and administrative people, accountable companies, were feeling you. They didn’t care about the product anymore, so someone who did care, not about the product but about their message, came to fill in.”

“I don’t think comics would be… wokeism isn’t killing Comics,” he said. “It’s a symptom. Many things killed American comics. Poor business decisions. Indifference. A failure to produce quality material. A chasing away of top creators.”

Dixon went on, “Marvel and DC created their own competition by chasing away top talent who were not going to go gentle into that ‘good night.’ You got top talent; people at the peak of their powers are going to keep doing comics.”

“And they’re going to do them for whoever will pay them to do them,” he continued. “Or, as you’ve seen in recent years, they’ll find a way to finance themselves. And that’s who DC’s and Marvel’s competition is — it’s a death of thousand cuts.”

Dixon added, “All of these top talent writers, and pencilers, and inkers, and colorists that [Marvel and DC] have let go are stealing their audience. And not really stealing it because they abandoned their audience.”

“The final straw” of wokeism entered the picture at that point with the new creators making up the vanguard of DC and Marvel demanding their readers change. Rather than do that, they stopped buying their comics as they were invited to do by Kelly Sue DeConnick. She was driven by politics, but Dixon doesn’t care. “If you like my comics, God bless you,” he says.
