Prospect Report: Giants, Yankees Win Complex League Crowns

P.J. Hilson’s two-out RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth clinched the 6-5 win and the Arizona Complex League title for the ACL Giants Black team. The ACL Rockies won game 1 of the best-of-3 series, but the Giants won back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday to claim the crown. 3B Thomas Gavello homered for the Giants as well. A two-run throwing error had helped the Rockies tie the game 5-5 in the top of the ninth.

The FCL Yankees won the Florida Complex League title with a 4-3 win over the FCL Rays in game 3 of the best-of-3 series. Felix Negueis scored the winning run on a throwing error in the sixth inning. Negueis scored three of the Yankees’ four runs.

Heriberto Hernandez, OF, Rays: Hernandez has been on a tear this month, but Sunday was his best day of a great month. The High-A Bowling Green outfielder homered twice against Rome, giving him nine home runs this month.

Chase Silseth, RHP, Angels: Silseth was sent back to Double-A Rocket City after seven starts with the Angels. Considering he was drafted just last year, the fact that he seemed overmatched by big league hitters is not surprising. But he’s been better in his return to Double-A and Sunday’s outing was one of his best of the year. He struck out a career-high 11 in six innings against Tennessee. He allowed two hits, one walk and two earned runs.

Matt Mervis, 1B, Cubs: When the season began, Mervis was assigned to High-A South Bend. He hit his way to a promotion by topping a 1.000 OPS in his lone month in the Midwest League. The promotion to Double-A Tennessee didn’t really slow him down. He posted a .966 OPS in roughly two months there. It doesn’t seem like the jump to Triple-A Iowa has affected him either. Mervis hit his 27th home run of the season and extended his hitting streak to nine games on Sunday and is now hitting .310/.373/.599 overall this year.

Dalton Rushing, C, Dodgers: Rushing isn’t slowing down. He went 5-for-6 with a double on Sunday, raising his slash line for Low-A Rancho Cucamonga to .485/.586/.882.

Senior Spotlight – Carlos Pacheco

“My plans for when I leave high school are to study, go to university and continue playing my sport, which I got a scholarship to play in Chicago and another in New York, where I’m going to study sports management. But I still don’t know which of the two I’m going to go to but my goal would be to continue playing my sport and continue studying. I plan to accomplish this with a lot of discipline, keep working hard, and well, I’m doing what I like so I am focused.

My biggest fear is not being able to fulfill the goals and dreams that I have to continue studying. One thing I regret is not having put more effort into school.

My happiest moment was when after 6 years without seeing my family I could see them again, and the saddest moment was when they went to leave again.

My support system is my family, my brothers help me a lot, they motivate me, they tell me to keep going, and that motivates me a lot. I look up to my father, he always gives everything for the family and has taught me a lot and I have a lot of respect for him.

What makes baseball my favorite sport compared to the other sports I have played is because this sport was introduced to me since I was little and after so many years of playing, I grew a lot of love for it and I play it with my heart and unlike other sports that I play as a hobby. My Favorite baseball memory at Four Corners, it was a game that I gave two triples, it was my best game but it was also my worst because that was the game that I got hurt. What motivates me is the dreams I have of becoming someone important in sport, and representing my country, Puerto Rico. My biggest dream would be to play in the major leagues.”

Peru’s Castillo shakes up police leadership after raid of govt headquarters

Leftist Peruvian President Pedro Castillo replaced the leadership of the country’s national police Saturday, two weeks after anticorruption officials searched  government headquarters in search of the leader’s wanted sister-in-law.

During the raid earlier this month, which Castillo has called “illegal,” investigators looked for Yenifer Paredes, who is accused of taking part in a corruption ring which prosecutors allege is run by the president and his wife, Lilia Paredes.

Among others, Castillo is now seeking to dismiss the head of that operation, Harvey Colchado, whom he says violated presidential immunity.

Deputy Internal Order Minister Abel Gamarra Saturday the turnover is a “natural change” as part of regular personnel switch-ups at the Interior Ministry.

“Norms (on appointment requirements) have not been violated,” Gamarra told RPP radio, adding that the “police command is not being crushed.”

Nevertheless, right-wing opposition lawmaker Jorge Montoya, who sits on the Internal Order parliamentary committee, on Twitter called the changes an “indiscriminate abuse of authority” by Castillo.

According to human rights lawyer Carlos Rivera Paz, Castillo “seems to want a police force that accommodates his interests,” which could include obstructing any investigations of which he is a target.

The ordeal is the second scandal Castillo has faced in regards to personnel changes at the top of Peru’s security forces.

In January, he was forced to name a new cabinet head after controversy over promotions in the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and the armed forces.

Those promotions are under investigation by prosecutors, which alleges that Castillo and former secretary of the presidency Bruno Pacheco engaged in influence peddling.

Castillo is currently the subject of an unprecedented six investigations for offenses including organized crime, obstruction of justice and plagiarism, though he carries presidential immunity through the end of his term in July 2026.

And Castillo’s family also faces legal trouble — his daughter risks three years of preliminary detention for her role in the corruption plot, while his wife could be banned from leaving the country.

Castillo, who has faced two impeachment attempts in his 13 months in office and currently has a disapproval rate around 70 percent; he has denied involvement in any crimes and claims he is a victim of a campaign trying to remove him from power.

Indigenous women’s work to preserve traditional knowledge celebrated on International Day | Bhaskar Live

His appeal comes in a message to mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, observed annually on 9 August.

This year the focus is on the role indigenous women have in preserving and passing on traditional knowledge.

Cultural champions

“Indigenous women are knowledge keepers of traditional food systems and medicines. They are champions of Indigenous languages and cultures. They defend the environment and Indigenous peoples’ human rights,” said Mr. Guterres.

“To build an equitable and sustainable future that leaves no one behind, we must amplify the voices of Indigenous women”.

Indigenous traditional knowledge can offer solutions to many common global challenges, said the UN chief, recalling his recent visit to Suriname, where he learned how communities are protecting the rainforest and its rich biodiversity.

Mr. Guterres urged countries to implement the landmark UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and to promote Indigenous traditional knowledge for the benefit of all.

Agronomist Deborah Suc, a member of the Poqomchi community, works for the World Food Programme (WFP) in Guatemala.

‘We are the same’

In connection with the International Day, the World Food Programme (WFP) has been highlighting the contributions of some of its staff who are from indigenous communities.

Deborah Suc, an agronomist in Guatemala, is the first woman from the Poqomchi ethnic group to graduate from university.

Ms. Suc works as a WFP field technician in the San Cristóbal municipality, which is located in Alta Verapaz department in north central Guatemala.

She supports the implementation of resilience activities in Poqomchi and Q’eqchi’ indigenous communities towards reducing poverty and hunger. Her job involves hosting workshops, leading meetings, or visiting families in their homes.

“When the women see me driving the car and I get out dressed in my suit, they are surprised and say, ‘We knew you spoke Poqomchí, but we didn’t know you were one of us.’ I tell them that we are the same and that we can all do different things”.

The way Ms. Suc is treated in San Cristóbal is light years away from her experience at university, where some people would make crude jokes at her expense.

Pride and prejudice

Unfortunately, the discrimination did not end when she received her master’s degree.

“When I get to some places in my suit, they stare at me with contemptuous expressions. On one occasion, while I was waiting to start a workshop at a government institution related to education, a person approached me to hand me the dirty dishes because he thought I was the cleaning person. He was very surprised when he found out that I was going to facilitate the workshop,” she recalled.

“Before, I was very affected by the way they saw me, but now I don’t take the time to pay attention to it because I feel very proud of who I am, of the mum and dad I have, of the person I am now”.

Respect for all

Ms, Suc had always worked outside her municipality, but now that she has returned to San Cristóbal she said “it is a satisfaction to work for my people”.  She also is proud to be an inspiration to her community.

“Nothing makes me happier than knowing that I can inspire other people and say, ‘Look, if we didn’t have a chance to study, now with these trainings you’re going to have other skills, you’re going to learn other things,” she said.

WFP asked Ms. Suc what would she like her colleagues to learn on the International Day.

She said she wanted them to know that indigenous peoples have principles and values, and that they have great respect for nature, which in turn means respect for people.

“I would like them to learn that we have a lot of respect for the value of the word, we have many cultural values, and we are people who like to get ahead,” she responded.

“In addition, many of the negative things that are said about indigenous peoples are not true. The thing is, we haven’t had the opportunities, but when we’ve had them, we were able to do a lot of things.”

13 Fruit and Vegetable Varieties to Direct Seed in May

Spring has sprung, and if you’re a gardener, that means that the time has come to roll up your sleeves, don your overalls and sun hats, and get down to business. We know how time can be, flying by, and then before you know it, the warmer months are here and you haven’t had time to start your seeds for that vegetable garden yet.

If you’re running a bit behind, don’t worry too much because there are plenty of veggies that prefer to be direct sown. Many of these vegetables have stems or roots that are fragile, which means that transplanting can disrupt their growth and leave you with sub-par results.

May and June are great months for direct seeding vegetable gardens, especially for those living north of hardiness zone 7, where the ground is still warming up through those early spring months. Before you break out your seed trays, let’s talk about some vegetables that can be directly sown in the month of May and into June.

Bush Beans

A perfect starter vegetable crop, bush beans can be grown by beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Bush beans are a warm-weather crop.

They perform best when temperatures reach a range of 65°-85°F, which sets Southern states squarely in the month of May, while in more Northern states with cooler climates, June is an ideal month to drop some Bush Bean seeds into the ground.

Bush beans are a type of bean that germinates quickly and easily, and they grow fast, so there is no need to start them indoors. They are well suited to garden beds, raised beds, and containers alike, and they are nitrogen fixers, so they help to enrich the soil for other plants.

Contender

Named for its ability to compete with the best of the beans, Contender is a disease-resistant variety of bush beans with large, stringless pods.

Taking only 50 days to mature, if you get these in the ground by mid-May, they will be ripe for the 4th of July cookouts.

Blue Lake 274

These tasty green beans are great if you’re looking for something a bit more delicate and flavorful. This variety produces plump, delicious pods with smooth white beans in about 58 days. If you pick them promptly, these beans are stringless, and they are also disease resistant.

Gold Rush

These pretty beans stand out in a field of green. The creamy golden hue of Gold Rush beans makes them easy to harvest. I am always partial to the unconventionally colored varieties of veggies.

They really elevate a meal with their uniqueness. Gold Rush keeps very well on the vine and is a great variety for freezing.

Summer Squash

Summer squash is one summer vegetable that is easy to grow and can be prepared in many wonderful ways. I’ve never met a squash casserole I didn’t like.

Squash plants really produce an exceptional harvest and require very little care. They germinate quickly, and within weeks, you will have stunning golden squash blossoms popping up all over the garden.

Also occasionally referred to as zucchini (although zucchini is specific to the green varieties), summer squash is harvested while it is immature. This ensures that the rind is soft and tender, so they don’t need to be cooked to death to enjoy their delicate buttery flavor. Directly sow these seeds from late May through early June for late summer perfection.

Emerald Delight

As the name suggests, this variety is green and has a classic zucchini appearance. They can be ready to harvest in just under 60 days, but if left on the vine longer, they will continue to grow until they are quite large.

Powdery mildew is a common problem when growing squash, but these wonderful veggies are resistant to it, along with several other common diseases.

Early Straightneck

I am partial to yellow summer squash myself. Something about that cheerful color lets me know that I’m definitely satisfying my vitamin C requirement for the day, and don’t forget about vitamin A! These veggies contain plenty of both.

These tender squash are ready to pick in just 45 days for smaller, softer squash, but you can also leave them on the bush for a giant harvest in late summer.

Lettuce

No vegetable garden is complete without a variety of lettuce. Whether you love a nice crisp salad or prefer a buttery lettuce leaf on your burgers, lettuce is an amazingly versatile vegetable that packs a huge nutrient and hydration punch.

Lettuce tends to be susceptible to pests because of its sweet, tender leaves, but with a little extra care, it is a fast-growing crop with great potential.

I love to grow lettuce and other greens in a vertical, stacked planter like the Greenstalk 7 Tier vertical planter. Lettuce turns a vertical planter into a tower of tastiness and takes up much less garden space this way. Direct sowing is recommended for all lettuce varieties.

Little Gem Romaine

Little Gem mini-romaine has the resilience of romaine and the sweetness of a butterhead, all wrapped in a crunchy little package.

This tasty lettuce can be harvested in 20 days and can be harvested repeatedly as all romaine lettuce can. Simply cut the leaves off, and the plant will grow back for a second round of crisp deliciousness.

Black Seeded Simpson Leaf

If you’re looking for a fast-growing variety that has lots of flavor and can handle the heat of summer, Black Seeded Simpson is perfect. This full-sized leaf lettuce variety has striking, frilly leaves and a fun crinkled texture.

Baby greens can be harvested in weeks, and full heads are ready to harvest in just over a month. This is a lettuce that you’ll come back to year after year for its reliability of flavor as well as a high germination rate.

Marvel of Four Seasons Butterhead

You might want to leave this stunning French variety of Butterhead in the ground just for looks. The cranberry-colored leaves are just so beautiful it’s hard to see them go.

However, they are equally as delicious, with a creamy, mild flavor and the tender texture of its type. Keep this variety moist in the summer, and you will have a steady supply of fresh lettuce even in the hottest months.

Rouge d’Hiver Romaine

This is another French heirloom variety that makes a wonderful late summer crop. It has great cold tolerance so that it can be planted well into the cooler months with little fear of freezing.

The crunchy leaves will blush a deeper red in cool weather, making this another fabulous treat to eat and look at.

New Red Fire Leaf

New Red Fire Leaf is one of the most heat-tolerant varieties of leaf lettuce. It is slow to bolt, so it stays flavorful for a long time, and if you forget to harvest right away, you can still avoid your crop turning bitter.

The ruffled leaves are green in the heart with lovely crimson edges that make a great garnish and really dress up a plate.

Cilantro

Love it or hate it, cilantro is a favored herb by many gardeners. Some people feel it tastes a bit soapy, but if you love it, then a good salsa or street taco is incomplete without a healthy dose of this leafy green.

I’m in the latter group, and I love it on chili, in salsa and guacamole, or mixed with red onions on top of tender carnitas.

Cilantro has a long tap root, so direct sowing is recommended and can be done through the end of spring. Germination takes about 5-10 days. I also love to let cilantro bolt in the garden because the flowers are beautiful and a pollinator favorite.

Long-Standing Santo

Long-Standing Santo is a large-leafed variety with a ton of flavor. It is slow to bolt, so you can allow it to mature for a large harvest or take cuttings little by little, and this variety will maintain its flavor and tenderness. This makes a great container plant with attractive, bushy foliage.

Moroccan Cilantro

Cilantro also goes by another name, Coriander, which implies the use of seeds as a spice. Moroccan Cilantro is great for harvesting the seeds as it bolts early, attracts pollinators to help it along, and produces large, flavorful seed pods early in the season. A culinary marvel!

Rainbow Carrots

I’m a sucker for a pretty plate of vegetables, and ever since I discovered rainbow carrots, I can’t resist roasting up a batch of these wonderful root veggies to go with a Sunday pot roast. Rainbow carrots are a blend of various shades of yellow, orange, and white, in a larger size than the average colored carrot. They are marvelously sweet and crunchy.

Give these veggies a bit of shade in the afternoon for a bountiful fall harvest, or wait until late summer to plant, and you’ll have colorful carrots in time for Thanksgiving.

Cantaloupe

Melons are a summertime staple, and cantaloupes are exceptionally easy melons to grow.

These melons perform best when direct seeded, and they need the soil to be at least 70°F for germination to take place.

Cantaloupes need the soil to remain moist during germination, so give them plenty of water in the first week after planting. Cantaloupes have shallow root systems. A thin layer of mulch will help protect vulnerable roots and hold moisture.

Melon vines can be a bit fragile, so try not to jostle them around too much. Many weeds will compete with cantaloupes for nutrients, so try to keep the weeds to a minimum. Mulch will come in handy in this way as well.

Minnesota Midget

This delicious variety produces very sweet and tender melons only 4” in diameter. They are hot weather lovers and take about two months from germination to harvest.

Minnesota Midget Cantaloupes are edible to the rind, with very little waste left over. I always struggle to finish a whole melon in one sitting, but these sweet little melons are the perfect size!

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t gotten a head start on your seed germinating indoors this year, there is no need to worry about a less-than-fantastic summer vegetable harvest. With so many tasty veggies and fruits that prefer to be directly sown, you can still get started on time and have a bountiful harvest throughout the summer months and into the fall. Try some of these delicious and beautiful varieties for a successful and flavorful vegetable garden.

3 Chiefs battling for roster spots who impressed in preseason opener vs. Bears

NFL, 2022 NFL preseason, Kansas City Chiefs, George Karlaftis, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore

The Kansas City Chiefs have already entered the new season, though losing to the Chicago Bears 19-14 on Saturday in their first preseason game may not have been ideal.

The objective of the preseason opener, however, was not really to win. Instead, the on-field performances will be considerably more significant. As training camp continues and the first round of roster cuts takes place the following week, a number of players helped and hurt their chances.

The Kansas City Chiefs basically learned some very important things about the athletes vying for spots on their roster.

When the NFL’s regular season begins, the coaching staff will utilize the data from these preseason games to evaluate players as they trim the roster to 53 men. Early this week, the Chiefs will see the first round of roster cuts as they must reduce their roster from 90 to 85 players.

After Week 1 of the preseason opener in Chicago, take a look at how the stock of some players has risen.

Chiefs standouts:

3. Skyy Moore

Skyy Moore, a wide receiver who was selected in the 2022 draft, had a fantastic day in his NFL debut. Prior to Saturday’s preseason opener, Moore was also the subject of considerable fanfare. In the aftermath of the Tyreek Hill trade, Moore now has a lot riding on his shoulders.

In the first half, Moore lined up both inside and outside and also caught the punts. Considering that Mecole Hardman is ready to have a larger role in the offense, special teams coach Dave Toub recently made a comment on the need of developing several returners. Moore fielded all of his punts beautifully, even one where he was pushed into by a teammate while he was catching it. On a crucial first-down pickup, though, he made the day’s best reception.

Prior to the 2022 draft, Moore was mostly praised for having good hands, which were on display here. On three targets, he had three catches for a total of 23 yards for the day. Moore surely established himself as a versatile tool for the offense in his debut. He helped raise his own stock in the locker room as the only lock in the receiving corps to pull in multiple catches.

2. George Karlaftis

George Karlaftis had an immediate impact on the squad by giving an outstanding performance on the field. His unwavering effort and power-rushing style were evident. The first-round pick’s debut was clearly a success.

He even finished the game with a powerful sack that seemed to be a declaration of his much-discussed motor. He also finished the day with two more quarterback hits, a tackle for loss, and a tackle.

In his short playing time on Saturday, Karlaftis was perhaps Kansas City’s most effective defensive lineman. His 10-yard sack made a big early splash. Karlaftis’ strength up front was blatantly apparent, and it really aided Steve Spagnuolo’s unit.

Following the loss, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with the media. The L notwithstanding, he had many reasons to be proud. When questioned about Karlaftis’ first game as a Chief, Reid beamed.

“Yeah, he’s a sharp kid,” Reid said. “He wants to do the right things. He talks to everybody. All those veteran players, he asks questions. He’s not afraid to learn. He’s got a good defensive line coach that can teach him. He’s a sponge right now with all that.”

1. Justin Watson

Every year, the Chiefs add an offensive weapon to their arsenal that receives excessive fanfare but never materializes. Wide receiver Cornell Powell, selected in the sixth round, was the victim the previous year. Isiah Pacheco and Justin Watson were this year’s highly rated wide receivers and running backs before today’s game. Both saw plenty of playing time against the Bears on Saturday in a variety of situations, but Justin Watson lived up to the promise.

— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) August 13, 2022

With five receptions for 48 yards and a significant 22-yard touchdown yards, Watson led all pass catchers on the day.

Watson played for the Buccaneers for the first four years of his career, accumulating a total of 23 catches while making only two starts. The Chiefs gave him a one-year contract in February, and he has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity.

For each of the three quarterbacks whose throws he received, he seemed to be a safety option and had several catches for first downs. He will have a great chance to have an effect on this offense in the next season if he can continue to build on today’s performance throughout the remainder of the preseason.

Getaway Hawaii: Discovering the Big Island

From an active volcano to snowy peaks, experience it all on Hawaii Island.

Looking for some R&R, but don’t want to travel too far from home? When it’s safe to travel again, a staycation on Hawaii Island is packed with everything needed to recharge your batteries.

The state’s largest island manages to fit all of the world’s climates into 4,000 square miles, and that makes for a diverse set of adventures to choose from.

Several of the island’s shorelines are classified by climatologists as desert. The west side’s stark black lava shores, the northwest’s Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve and beautiful Hapuna Beach, and further south, there’s Kailua-Kona—all areas for playing or relaxing under the hot sun.

If you’re looking for a change from the lowland heat, head upcountry for a cooler climate. The higher elevations of northerly  and southeasterly Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are described as temperate. Heading to even higher elevations, you can experience an alpine climate—marked by average temperatures that fall below 50—at the top of Maunakea and on the Mauna Loa Observatory and Trail (take a coat).

The east side gives rise to four humid tropical climates that keep Hilo town, the wilds of Waipio Valley, and the plunging 442-foot Akaka Falls dramatically lush. Hilo, in fact, has laid claim to fame as the wettest city in the state, and is among the wettest cities in the world.

To experience almost all the climates of the world, look no further than a 30-45-minute plane ride to Hawaii Island, and enjoy a staycation sporting a range of fun in a variety of temperatures.

Where to Stay

Holualoa Inn, an elegant bed and breakfast, is located at a cool 1,300 feet up the slopes of Hualalai near the tiny artists community of Holualoa. Guests are instantly greeted by panoramic ocean views and a warm spirit of hospitality.

The top-notch lodging is set amidst 30 acres of fruit orchards, where fresh ingredients for farm-to-table gourmet breakfasts are harvested. The 100 percent Kona coffee they serve is cultivated from a farm right on the property, boasting 4,000 coffee trees.

A scenic atmosphere greets you on every part of the property, whether you’re strolling along footpaths lined with guava and lilikoi that wind through the estate, relaxing at the mosaic swimming pool and hot tub that overlook the Kona coast, or gazing at breathtaking sunsets from the rooftop gazebo.

Where to Eat

There are two Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill restaurants on the island, one in Kailua-Kona and the other in downtown Hilo. Both offer casual dining that features boat-to-table seafood, fresh meats, pasta dishes and salads—a menu branded as continental cuisine with an island flair.

Their Happy Hours are popular and offer lilikoi martinis, Hawaiian margaritas and $5 pupu picks from the appetizer menu, including kalua pork quesadillas. The Hilo restaurant, located in the historic Kaikodo Building, features an elegant, hand-carved, 150-year-old English bar and 200-year-old Chinese doors crafted in glass and woodwork.

Other tours include bird watching, zip lining, or swimming under a waterfall. Outside magazine has called the longstanding and well-respected company one of the country’s Best Places to Work. Owner and naturalist Rob Pacheco says the company’s goal is to support each guest in making a meaningful connection to the island. They support kamaaina, as well, so be sure to ask for the discount on all tours.

Where to Shop

Volcano Art Center Gallery, located near the Kilauea Visitor Center in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, surrounds you with artwork created by 300 or so Big Island artists, inspired by Kilauea Volcano. This is the place for finding quality, one-of-a-kind omiyage. The gallery features both traditional and contemporary work by top local artists, including finely crafted furniture made from native woods, hand-blown glass, jewelry, ceramics, photography, and other two- and three-dimensional art.

The gallery building claims an engaging history of its own as a previous incarnation of the Volcano House hotel, built in 1877 to house 19th-century tourists to the volcano. Writers Mark Twain, Isabella Bird and Robert Louis Stevenson were among the visitors who slept overnight in the building, as did King Kalakaua and French microbiologist Louis Pasteur.
