Detroit Tigers get the win thanks to the ‘right guy in the right time’

The Detroit Tigers snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on Monday night against the division rival Kansas City Royals, rebounding from what was originally a 4-0 deficit to earn a satisfying 6-4 win. It was made possible thanks to a 3-run home run from Kerry Carpenter in the 7th inning, his 6th long ball of 2023 so far.

The Tigers fought their way back

Detroit initially found themselves trailing by four runs after two home runs by Kansas City that were surrendered by starting pitcher Reese Olson. But they would eventually get their way back into the swing of things thanks to Jake Rogers scoring with assistance from an error in the outfield by Royals left fielder Edward Olivares.

That would set the stage for Carpenter to play the role of hero:

“We had the right guy up at the plate at the right time and he got the right pitch and we got the right outcome,” manager A.J. Hinch said afterward.

Carpenter himself was fired up, flashing a big smile in his postgame interview on the field.

“Just get a good pitch to hit,” the beaming Carpenter said. “I knew they might throw me some off-speed pitches and try to get a ground ball or something. I just tried to see it up and put a good swing on it. He left it up and over the middle of the plate.”

The home run also happened to be the second by Carpenter in the last two days.

“That’s my favorite part of the whole thing,” Carpenter said. “Watching those guys. I’m doing it for those guys.”

Wrapping It Up: The Tigers are red hot

The Tigers find themselves on a tear right now, having won four out of their last five games.

They’ll have a chance to make it five in their last six when they continue their series against the Royals later tonight at Comerica Park.

Peel Region declares intimate partner violence an epidemic, asks Ontario to do the same | CBC News

Peel Region has declared gender and intimate-partner violence an epidemic and is calling on Ontario to do the same in the hope of legislation that targets family violence.

At a meeting Thursday, the region unanimously voted in favour of the term in an attempt to raise awareness on the issue and more funding to address it.

“What we really need in this declaration of this epidemic is funding for these agencies so that they can be there for the women that need it the most,” said Peel regional and Brampton councillor Rowena Santos.

In 2021 alone, Peel police responded to more than 17,000 incidents of family and intimate partner violence, averaging to nearly 45 incidents every day or about two every hour.  Of the cases where charges that were laid, police say 78 per cent of the victims were women.

And advocates say that’s just what gets reported.

While local declarations are a big step forward in recognizing the problem, community victim service providers says they’ll need more funding to keep up with current and future demand.

The region is the latest to label the problem an epidemic. Twenty-five other local governments in Ontario have already done so, including Durham Region, the City of Oakville and Halton Region.  According to a motion by the City of Brampton, Toronto has not made the move, though Ottawa has.

Declaring gender-based and intimate partner violence was the first recommendation made by a coroner’s jury at last year’s Renfrew County inquest that looked into the 2015 murders of three women: Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam. All three women were murdered on the same day by the same man, despite red flags about his potential to inflict further harm.

Recent deaths sparked move

The region’s move comes a day after the municipality of Brampton declared such violence an epidemic within that city. Brampton also asked for provincial and federal funding to support organizations providing victim resources, asked the federal government to coin the term “femicide” in the Criminal Code of Canada and asked it to declare it an epidemic countrywide.

Santos says it was 11-year-old Riya Rajkumar, who died in February 2019, that sparked Brampton council’s focus on the issue. Her father was charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.

More recently in May, 43-year-old mother Davinder Kaur was killed after meeting her estranged husband in a park.  Santos says these cases were top of mind for her and regional councillor Navjit Kaur Brar, who are also the only two women on Brampton city council, when trying to get the motion passed.

“We’ve seen what happened with Davinder Kaur, and she left four beautiful children. And how that affects the city of Brampton — it was echoed across the city,” said Brar.

“We need to bring tangible action.”

Pandemic exacerbated violence: advocate

Sharon Mayne Devine, the CEO of Catholic Family Services, the lead agency for the Safe Centre of Peel, says the pandemic exacerbated violence against women.

In the last year alone, she says they had 1,000 women in the city come to the centre for support, almost half ages 30 to 39, and many with children.

“The more we can get the word out, the sooner we can intervene, the less severe the violence is,” Devine told Brampton city council on Wednesday, noting it’s a good sign that women feel more empowered to get support.

But Devine says until they get proportionate increases to their funding, there will be difficulty in both delivering programming and taking care of frontline staff who provide services to victims each day.

That’s something that Rebecca Pacheco, the public education and community collaboration coordinator for Peel Committee Against Women Abuse, is already seeing at her own organization, Embrave Agency to End Violence. The group operates two shelters for survivors of gender-based violence in the region.

“We are almost always at full capacity,” said Pacheco.

“The demand is larger than what community services are able to offer and it’s horrible. It’s not the situation we want to be in, but it is.”

Pachecho says getting the other municipalities in the region, Caledon and Mississauga, to make a similar move is the next step for the group.

“We’re having these conversations in Peel, but there are coordinating committees across this province doing similar work,” said Pachecho.

‘We need more support,’ says councillor

In the 2023 budget, the Ontario government said its committed over $693 million to support victims of violence, including emergency shelters, counselling services and 24‐hour crisis lines since 2020. For the 2023-24 year, it says it’s putting an additional $2.5 million in youth violence, human trafficking prevention and victim response programming.

In an email to CBC Toronto, the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services said the government of Ontario fully endorses the 10-year National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, just as federal, other provincial and territorial governments did last November.

“Our government is breaking down barriers so women that have experienced violence have access to timely and effective care, no matter where they live, while also taking action to prevent and address violence against women and gender-based violence in all forms,” the statement reads.

“Our government will continue to work to prevent gender-based violence; address its root causes; and provide support for victims, survivors, and their families.”

“The demand grows and our capacity to meet the demand shrinks,” said Devine.

Moving forward, Santos says she hopes to get more municipalities and regions on board and hopefully get the province on board.

“Because of that level of attention, we’re hoping that the voice would be loud enough to say across the province that we need more support on this issue,” said Santos.

Ranking NFL 2023 ‘Triplets,’ Part III: Bengals and Chiefs in a league of their own – CBSSports.com

Just as we did last year and the year before that and the year before that and the year before that and the year before that and the year before that, the crew here at CBSSports.com recently set out to rank each NFL team’s “triplets.” Why not, right? It’s the middle of the offseason, and it’s an offseason tradition around these parts.

So in the space below, we’re once again counting down the NFL’s best QB-RB-WR/TE trios, grading the expected starters at quarterback and running back and their presumed top pass-catcher for the 2023 NFL season. For some teams, it was obvious who would fill each role. For others, less so. Where we had to make judgment calls on which player would start at quarterback or who would be the top target, we did.

In the space below, you’ll see our rankings of these triplets. The first number in parentheses is the team’s average ranking based on the votes of several of our staff writers and editors at CBSSports.com, while the second number reflects the high and low end of where our staffers ranked that individual team.

For example, our No. 6 team — the Dallas Cowboys — had an average ranking of 6.8, with a high ranking of 5 and a low of 13. We have denoted tier breaks in any place where the difference between the average ranking of one team and another exceeded 2.0. For example, the aforementioned Cowboys had an average ranking of 6.8 and the Chargers had an average of 4.4, so the Chargers begin a new tier.

The panel included myself, John Breech, Jeff Kerr, Tyler Sullivan, Jordan Dajani, Cody Benjamin, Shanna McCarriston, Chris Trapasso, Kevin Steimle, Brett Anderson, Garrett Podell, Joel Magaraci, Kyle Stackpole, R.J. White, Eric Kernish and Eric Kay. The rankings reflect the collective wisdom of this crowd, while the corresponding analysis is mine.

We began this exercise on Tuesday with the bottom third of the league. We continued Wednesday with the middle of the pack, and conclude today with the very top tiers. Without further ado …

Tier 3: The Cowboys

6. Dallas Cowboys (Avg: 6.8, High: 5, Low: 13)

Last year: 7th

Pollard is at long last the lead back in Dallas, and it looks like his recovery from a fractured ankle has gone well enough that he’s been a full participant in the offseason program. If he weren’t getting overshadowed by draft-class-mate Justin Jefferson, there would be a whole lot of talk about Lamb getting off to one of the best three-year starts in league history. The only players to match or exceed Lamb’s first-three-year totals in receptions (260), receiving yards (3,396) and receiving touchdowns (20) are Jefferson, Odell Beckham Jr., A.J. Green and Michael Thomas. Meanwhile, the people hung up on Prescott’s interception total from last season are willfully subjecting themselves to recency bias. Even after last year’s disaster, Prescott has the fifth-lowest interception rate among 165 players with 2,000 or more pass attempts in their career. The dude is really good, full stop.

Tier 2: Great, but just short of the best

5. Los Angeles Chargers (Avg: 4.4, High: 3, Low: 7)

Last year: 1st

A change in offensive coordinator from Joe Lombardi to former Cowboys coordinator Kellen Moore should finally get Herbert throwing the ball down the field more often. A player with his skill set ranking 31st out of 35 qualifying quarterbacks in air yards per attempt over the past two seasons is inexcusable. Prescott ranked a much more respectable 11th among the same group of players, and if Moore can nudge Herbert in that direction, L.A. will be better for it. Still, his top two targets are likely to remain Ekeler and Allen, who excel at finding the soft spots underneath and remain absolute target monsters who produce at a high level whenever they’re healthy.

4. Buffalo Bills (Avg: 4.2, High: 3, Low: 6)

Last year: 3rd

Allen has a ceiling as a quarterback that is matched or exceeded by only one player, given his unique physical gifts. Prior to his elbow injury last season, he was hitting that ceiling pretty much weekly. Buffalo’s short-and-quick passing game pretty much disappeared after the injury, though, as Allen’s underneath accuracy became much more scattershot. That affected Diggs’ role in the offense, and he appeared none too happy about it. And yet, this remains one of the best QB-WR connections in the entire league, able to threaten defenses to every level of the field and connect at a high rate. Cook will likely split backfield duties with Damien Harris, but his versatility and facility as a pass-catcher gets him the nod here.

3. Philadelphia Eagles (Avg: 4.1, High: 2, Low: 6)

Last year: 16th

Hurts took a significant step forward last season after the Eagles added Brown, who proved the perfect complement to DeVonta Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert. They were particularly effective on RPO slants and pure deep balls, each of which allow Brown to use his physicality to win at the catch point and his athleticism to turn plays into even bigger gains. Hurts’ ability to morph from a dropback passer into a rushing threat is elite, and the only area where he relatively struggled last season was against the blitz. It remans to be seen how this all looks without former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, and we have absolutely no idea who among Rashaad Penny, D’Andre Swift, Kenneth Gainwell, and Boston Scott will eventually emerge in the backfield, but there’s a lot to like here no matter what.

Tier 1: A league of their own

2. Kansas City Chiefs (Avg: 1.6, High: 1, Low: 3)

Last year: 4th

1. Cincinnati Bengals (Avg: 1.5, High: 1, Low: 2)

Last year: 2nd

Kansas City received one stray third-place vote, and that ultimately proved the difference between first and second in this exercise. Patrick Mahomes is the best player on the planet, able to reach heights no other quarterback can achieve due to his unique combination of accuracy, timing, out-of-structure playmaking and arm strength. He and Kelce are the most unstoppable duo in the league, and it almost doesn’t matter what running back you slot alongside them.

That said, I have a feeling the perceived difference between Mixon and Pacheco is what ultimately landed the Bengals in first — even if Mixon was seemingly on the verge of being cut for a portion of this offseason. Burrow and Chase are basically a big play waiting to happen, and the work the entire offense did last year to counteract top-down defenses taking away the deep ball will help them deep into the future.

Holtby, who was wearing a blue Juan Soto Nationals’ jersey, could be seen holding a Nationals’ cherry blossom jersey in the social media shots.

This is the second time Holtby has been spotted at Nationals Park this month. Reader Charlie McManus also spotted Holtby at the Sunday, June 4 game against the Phillies.

Holtby, who grew up loving the Toronto Blue Jays, became a big Nationals fan during his time in DC and has been to many games over the years.

He also bonded with the team, including Soto, when they celebrated their 2019 World Series victory at Capital One Arena.

The Holtbys returned to the area after leaving when he signed the Vancouver Canucks in 2020. Holtby played one season in Vancouver before moving on to the Dallas Stars. He became an unrestricted free agent last July, but opted not to play in 2022-23 due to injury. He has not officially announced his retirement.

“Number one on my mind right now is getting some stability for my kids back in their life,” Holtby said to RMNB. “They’re at an age now where their life is more important than a hockey career. That’s number one.

“The last few years have been tough,” he added. “I’m getting old. I’m at a point where I’m not about to say one way or the other, but for me, I need to be more present in other things, and then maybe if the love of the game comes back somehow, then maybe, who knows? Right now I’m enjoying spending time with my family and doing some other stuff, too.”

Holtby has also been spotted at other Capitals related events, too. attended the PWHPA Showcase at MedStar Capitals Icpelex with former teammate John Carlson in March. He also appeared at a beer release party for Garnet Hathaway in October. He also surprised guests at a Laughlin Family Foundation Golf Event in September.

Prospect Report: Evan Carter Slugs Two Homers In San Antonio

Evan Carter, OF, Rangers: Praised for his strong overall skill set, the biggest question in Carter’s game was his power entering the year. After a two-home run night on Wednesday it looks like Carter could silence that question in 2023. Carter went 2-for-3 with two home runs, a pair of walks and a stolen base on Wednesday.

Matthew Liberatore, LHP, Cardinals: Liberatore’s strong start to the season continued on Wednesday as he struck out 10 batters over a seven-inning effort. The lefthander generated 17 swings and misses in the outing, topping out at 97.5 mph, and he sat 95-96 mph on his four-seam and sinker. He generated nine whiffs against the fastball as well as four whiffs against his curveball.

Hunter Goodman, OF, Rockies: The powerful Goodman was among the minor league leaders in home runs in 2022 and it looks like he’s picking up where he left off. Goodman slugged two home runs for his first multi-home run game of the season on Wednesday. Goodman has hit three home runs through five games and it looks as though he’s having very little trouble getting acclimated to life in Double-A.

Cade Horton, RHP, Cubs: The No. 7 overall pick made his debut on Wednesday, going 2.1 innings, allowing two hits with no walks and striking out five of the nine batters he faced. The buzz entering the season was strong for Horton, who came on toward the end of his draft spring with Oklahoma after dealing with injuries early in his collegiate career.

Jackson Holliday, SS, Orioles: The top overall pick in last July’s draft stayed hot on Wednesday, reaching base three times as he collected a double, a triple and a walk. Over his first five games Holliday is hitting .400/.500/.700 and looks every bit the star the Orioles anticipated when they took him first overall.

Ryan Clifford, OF, Astros: The powerful Clifford went 2-for-3 on Wednesday with a home run, three walks, three RBIs and four runs scored. It was a standout performance for Clifford, who is enjoying his time in front of his native North Carolina fans in Fayetteville.

Cole Young, SS, Mariners: The Pennsylvania native went 4-for-4 on Wednesday night as he collected three singles, a double and a stolen base. The 2022 first-round pick is hitting .450/.577/.650 over the first five games of the season, giving Mariners’ fans another young player to follow in the coming years.

Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs: The Montgomery pitching staff would have been better off walking Caissie as he slugged three home runs on Wednesday and drove in six. Caissie connected for his first three home runs of the season en route to his first multi-hit game of the year. At 20 years old the Cubs have put a great deal of faith in Caissie by assigning him to Double-A.

Maranatha, San Dimas and La Mirada lose in first round of Boras Classic – Whittier Daily News

San Gabriel Valley area baseball team’s didn’t fare well Tuesday in the first round of the Boras Classic in Orange County.

Maranatha (13-3) entered the tournament on an 11-game winning streak, but had rarely been tested during that stretch. Most of those wins came in the Olympic League, where they’re 9-0 and have outscored their opponents 94-12.

Maranatha took on Orange Lutheran (12-7-1) in a first-round game at JSerra. It fell behind early and couldn’t produce enough offense to mount a comeback, losing 6-2.

The Minutemen reached the CIF Southern Section Division 2 semifinals a year ago, and they have have several players on their roster who were part of that group. They have the talent to compete with the top teams in Southern California.

But they will have to show it during the consolation rounds of the Boras Classic after Tuesday’s loss.

The Minutemen fell behind 3-0 in the first inning after Orange Lutheran’s JJ Robles belted a two-run homer.

The Minutemen scored a run in the bottom half of the first. Cider Cannon’s infield single scored Bryan Richman to make it 3-1.

But the Lancers, ranked No. 10 in CIF-SS Division 1, added a run in the second inning, and went up 5-1 in the third inning after a hit batter forced in a run in with the bases loaded.

Cannon and Eric Zdunek each had two hits to pace the Minutemen, with Zdunek providing a double. Noah Everly doubled home their other run.

NOTRE DAME 7, SAN DIMAS 1

The Saints looked to build on the momentum from last week’s third-place finish in the National Classic, where they beat El Dorado 5-2 in their final game to go 3-1 during the tournament.

But the Saints (14-4) had a tough time in the first round of the Boras Classic against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (17-2), the top-ranked team in Division 1. They gave up six runs in the second inning and were never a serious threat after that.

Saints pitcher Kody King gave up seven hits and five earned runs in two innings.

With the score 4-0 in the second inning, Notre Dame’s Madden Ocko hit a two-out single that drove in two more runs.

The early lead was more than enough for Notre Dame pitcher Justin Lee, a UCLA commit. Lee picked up the victory by going five innings, allowing three hits, a run and struck out seven.

The Saints managed four hits, and Vaughn Coleman drove in their only run during the fourth inning.

HUNTINGTON BEACH 6, LA MIRADA 0

The Oilers (15-6), ranked No. 5 in CIF-SS Division 1, took a 5-0 lead in the third inning with Colby Turner’s two-run home run. That was more than enough for Oilers pitcher Carson Lane, who took care of the rest.

Lane got the victory, giving up only two hits over six innings. Gavin Pacheco closed out the seventh.

Antioch, CA…There’s a buzz in the air as racing has resumed at Antioch Speedway. Following last week’s 63rd championship season opener, the fans are in for a real treat. The Joe Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Tour kicks off their season at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds oval, joined by the IMCA Sport Modifieds and the 600 Micro Sprints.
Everyone knows that Antioch Speedway introduced the Wingless Spec Sprint division to the racing community In 1999 as an option to get newcomers into Sprint Car racing. The track will have its 25th championship season for that class this year.
Other tracks followed the example of Antioch Speedway with a Spec Sprint division of their own, and eventually there was call for a series. First came the NCMA Select Series, but when that group left the dirt to run exclusively on pavement in 2010, a new option with needed.
The Joe Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series was born. This series brings some of the best drivers in the class together for good competition and increased purses and contingencies. If you can win with this group, you can win anywhere.
Seeing the need for a little something extra for last season’s Soares Memorial, the Hunt Series with brought in last October and gave the Antioch crowd 28 cars and some great racing. Past series champion Shawn Jones of San Jose picked up the win that night ahead of Jake Morgan of Fair Oaks.
Following last season’s exciting tour, Morgan was crowned the series champion ahead of Josh Young of Roseville and Antioch’s Shawn Arriaga  Arriaga, who is a past Winged 360 Sprint Car champion at both Antioch and Petaluma, has been a factor in recent Wingless Spec Sprint races, including his win in the Sonny Calkins Memorial last season at Antioch Speedway, which netted him $2,500. He should be one of the front runners this week.
A field into the high twenties or low thirties is anticipated, including such hard chargers as Nick Larson of Vallejo, Brent Steck of Roseville, Jarrett Soares of Gilroy, Shane Hopkins of Placerville, Ethon Lanfri of Milpitas and Livermore’s Scott Chapeta.
Previous attempts to get the IMCA Sport Modified season going have resulted in rainouts, but clear skies are in the forecast for this Saturday night. Last season, Fred Ryland of Brentwood won his third track championship and also scored his 70th overall career win at Antioch, moving him into fourth on the track’s all time win list. He beat rising young star Andrew Pearce of Oakley by a slim margin. Oakley’s Jacob Mallet Jr won the IMCA State championship last year.
After winning the top rookie honors in IMCA Modifieds last year, three-time champion Trevor Clymens of Brentwood returns to Sport Modified competition this week. He figures to make his presence known at the front of the pack. Other stars to watch for include Chuck Golden of Pittsburg, Kenny Shrader of Pacheco, Tommy Fraser of Antioch and Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley.
It was just announced on Sunday that the 600 Micro Sprints have been added to this week’s show. Micro Sprint racing reigns at the smaller 1/5 mile ovals in Dixon and Stockton, so getting a date at Antioch when drivers can attend has become a challenge.
Several drivers who travel up and down the road are hoping to take on the bigger oval this week. The division uses 600cc engines that still get around the track quite well. This division should be a nice touch to the overall program.
The Hunt Series is just part of the Sprint Car excitement coming to Antioch this year. In addition to the local Wingless Spec Sprints, you can expect special visits from the NARC Winged 410 Sprint Cars on April 29th and the Sprint Car Challenge Tour Winged 360 Sprints on July 1st, among other great attractions throughout the season.

The gates will open at 4:00 with the first race starting at 6:00.

Adult tickets are $20, Senior/Military $15, Kids (5-12) $15 and kids five and under free.
