I’m not a good man or a bad man, I just follow orders

“Shoot, they told me. I obeyed.
I’ve always been obedient. By obedience
I conquered my high rank

I’m not a good man or a bad man
I just follow orders”1
– José Emilio Pacheco (my translation)

In 1942, a man designed efficient plans to transport hundreds of thousands of people. Never meeting them, Adolf Eichmann ensured that they all boarded trains and were taken from point A to point B on time: a master of logistics. Those trains led to extermination camps, and hundreds of thousands of Jews were pushed into them.2

Decades later, Eichmann was tried. On the stand, he had one thing to say: “I just obeyed.” He had never thought about consequences. He did as he was told and was rewarded accordingly.

Fast forward seventy years. Amidst the nightly obstetric chaos in a northeastern Mexico hospital in northeast Mexico, a woman was about to give birth. After hours of pain, the head of the baby was almost out—everything progressing normally.

“Pass me the scissors,” my senior ordered.

I had learned that episiotomies (cutting the vaginal opening) should be done only if necessary.3 However, at this hospital, this was routine. I thought about challenging him, but I did not.

“Of course,” I answered as I gave him the scissors, aware of my participation in malpractice.

There were no complications—at least in the short term.

Going over this scenario in my head, I repeated, as reassurance, “She is going to be okay,” “It’s not that bad,” and “I just obeyed.”

Unfortunately, obeying for the sake of obeying is not uncommon in medical training. Questioning authority is not well received. Obedience—even blind—is often rewarded.

I am not comparing episiotomies to genocide but analyzing the symmetries between Eichmann’s logic and mine. I question a system which enables noncompliance to the detriment of safety. I ask: What pushed me into participating? What stopped me from speaking up? Is obedience necessary? To what extent?

We trainees like to feel like part of the team. After years of learning about diseases and bioethical principles such as beneficence, non-malfeasance and autonomy,4 we arrive at the hospital excited to put this knowledge into practice. But confronted by a dissonance between learnt ethics and a hidden etiquette, we comply with substandard care. We keep silent for fear of retaliation.5 We realize we must adapt to survive—even to being complicit. As stated by Andrew H. Brainard et al,6 “students become ‘professional’ and ‘ethical’ chameleons because it is the only way to navigate the minefield of an unprofessional medical school or hospital culture.”

Passing through moments of guilt, I discovered that others also feel this way.7,8 Auschwitz Ethics Fellow Sarah van der Lely discussed a classmate’s testimony in which their superior had requested a vaginal examination on an anesthetized woman without consent.9 Although all in their medical ethics class agreed the examination would be unethical, when asked who would refuse to do it, none spoke. We often learn that silently obeying is the smartest way to avoid conflicts and succeed.

In a field where many decisions mean life or death, structure is necessary. The person with the most knowledge and experience has the final say, and in emergencies, there is often no time for debate. But medicine is also tied to ethics. How can obedience and ethics intersect?

I concluded that blind obedience and ethics cannot coincide, but then I had more questions. Should strict obedience depend on the scenario: emergencies or non-emergencies? How can we protect whistleblowers? Is it more ethical to express my doubts publicly on paper than by talking to superiors or peers? Is it possible or feasible to have time for discussion when everyday practice makes almost no room for reflection?

I hope that exploring these dilemmas will encourage meaningful conversations. Perhaps my doubts could catalyze change towards a more open dialogue.

Improving Software Efficiency through Optimal Architecture

When it comes to software development, one of the key factors that can greatly impact efficiency is the architecture of the system. A well-designed architecture sets the foundation for a robust and scalable software application. In this section, we will explore how to improve software efficiency through optimal architecture. So, let’s dive in!

Design Patterns and Principles

Design patterns and principles play a crucial role in creating an efficient software architecture. They provide guidelines and best practices that help developers structure their code in a way that promotes reusability, maintainability, and scalability. Here are some popular design patterns and principles:

  • MVC (Model-View-Controller): This architectural pattern separates the application into three interconnected components – the model, the view, and the controller. This separation of concerns allows for easier code management and promotes code reuse.
  • Dependency Injection: This principle emphasizes the loose coupling of components by injecting dependencies rather than instantiating them directly. This promotes modular and testable code.
  • Single Responsibility Principle: According to this principle, each module or class should have a single responsibility, making the code easier to understand, maintain, and test.

Scalable and Modular Architecture

Scalability is a critical aspect of software efficiency. A well-designed architecture allows for seamless scaling of the software, both horizontally and vertically. Here are some strategies to achieve a scalable and modular architecture:

  • Microservices Architecture: In this approach, the application is divided into small, independently deployable services, each responsible for a specific business capability. This promotes flexibility and scalability.
  • Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA): SOA is an architectural style where different services communicate with each other using well-defined interfaces. This promotes loose coupling and allows for better flexibility and scalability.
  • Containerization: Containerization technologies, such as Docker, provide a lightweight and isolated runtime environment for applications. It enables faster deployment, scaling, and portability.
  • Event-Driven Architecture: This architecture revolves around the concept of events and messages. Components in the system communicate through events, enabling loosely coupled and scalable systems.

By embracing these architectural patterns and principles, developers can build software applications that are efficient, scalable, and maintainable.

“A well-designed architecture is crucial for building efficient and scalable software applications.”

Now that we have explored the importance of optimal architecture, let’s move on to the next section, where we will discuss how to ensure software quality with effective testing strategies.

Ensuring Software Quality with Effective Testing Strategies

Quality assurance is a crucial aspect of software development. Without proper testing strategies in place, the software may be prone to bugs, errors, and other issues that can negatively impact the user experience. Implementing effective testing strategies is essential for ensuring software quality. Let’s explore some key testing techniques that can help achieve this goal:

Unit Testing and Test-Driven Development

  • Unit testing is the process of testing individual units or components of the software to ensure they function correctly. This involves writing test cases for specific functionalities and executing them to validate the expected outcomes.
  • Test-driven development (TDD) is an approach where tests are written before the actual code. This ensures that the code is built to fulfill specific test cases, which can lead to higher quality and better-designed software.

Integration and System Testing

  • Integration testing focuses on testing how different components of the software work together. It checks if the integration points between modules are functioning as expected and if the data is flowing correctly.
  • System testing is performed on a complete, integrated system to validate that it meets the specified requirements and functions as intended. It ensures that the software behaves as expected in different scenarios and environments.

User Acceptance Testing

  • User acceptance testing (UAT) involves testing the software in a real-world environment by end-users to determine if it meets their needs and expectations. This helps identify any usability or functionality issues that may have been missed during development and leads to better customer satisfaction.

By implementing these testing strategies, you can enhance software quality and mitigate the risk of bugs and errors. However, it’s important to remember that testing should be an ongoing process throughout the development lifecycle, rather than a one-time event. Regular updates and improvements should be made based on feedback and new requirements.

“Testing shows the presence of bugs, not the absence of them.” – Edsger Dijkstra

To make testing more efficient, consider using automated testing tools and frameworks. These can help streamline the testing process, save time, and improve accuracy. Automated testing can be particularly beneficial for repetitive tests, regression testing, and performance testing.

In conclusion, ensuring software quality requires implementing effective testing strategies throughout the development process. By conducting thorough unit testing, integration and system testing, and involving end-users in user acceptance testing, you can identify and rectify issues before the software reaches the hands of your users. Continuous improvement and data-driven optimization should be a top priority to provide a seamless and high-quality user experience.

Continuous Integration and Delivery for Efficient Software Development

In the fast-paced world of software development, speed and efficiency are key. One way to achieve this is through the implementation of continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) practices. CI/CD refers to the process of automating the build, testing, and deployment of software, enabling teams to work more collaboratively and deliver high-quality code at a rapid pace. Here are some key aspects and benefits of CI/CD for efficient software development:

Automation in Build, Test, and Deployment Processes

One of the main benefits of CI/CD is automation. By automating the build, test, and deployment processes, developers can save valuable time and reduce the chances of human error. With traditional manual processes, developers would have to manually build the software, run tests, and deploy it to production. This manual approach can be time-consuming and prone to errors. With CI/CD, these processes can be automated, resulting in faster and more reliable releases.

Continuous Integration Servers

CI/CD relies on the use of continuous integration servers, which are tools that automate the build and test processes. These servers continuously monitor the software repository for changes and automatically trigger the build and test processes whenever a new change is detected. Some popular CI servers include Jenkins, Travis CI, and CircleCI.

By using a continuous integration server, developers can ensure that the software is always in a functional and deployable state. A comprehensive suite of automated tests can be run on each code change, catching any issues early in the development process. This enables teams to identify and fix bugs quickly, resulting in better software quality.

Benefits of CI/CD for Efficient Software Development

Implementing CI/CD practices in your software development process can bring numerous benefits, including:

  • Rapid feedback: With continuous integration and automated tests, developers receive immediate feedback on the quality of their code. This allows them to address any issues early on, reducing the time and effort required to fix them later.
  • Faster and more frequent releases: Automation enables teams to release new features and bug fixes more frequently. The ability to quickly deliver updates to users can help businesses stay ahead of their competition and meet customer expectations.
  • Reduced time to market: Continuous integration and delivery practices streamline the software development process, enabling faster time to market. This is especially important in competitive industries where being the first to market can give businesses a significant advantage.
  • Improved collaboration: CI/CD encourages collaboration among team members. By automating the build and deployment processes, all team members can work on the same codebase and see immediate results. This fosters better communication and collaboration, leading to higher-quality software.
  • Increased code quality: CI/CD enables teams to catch and fix bugs early in the development process. With automated tests running on every code change, any issues are identified quickly, resulting in higher code quality and fewer bugs in production.

As software development continues to evolve, CI/CD practices have become an essential part of the process. By automating build, test, and deployment processes, teams can work more efficiently, deliver higher-quality software, and respond to market demands faster. Embracing CI/CD can lead to improved collaboration, increased code quality, and ultimately, better products for end-users.

Implementing a Data-Driven Approach for Software Optimization

In today’s digital world, data is considered the new gold. It has the power to transform businesses and drive decisions based on real-time insights. When it comes to software optimization, leveraging data can be a game-changer. One of the key aspects of a data-driven approach is performance monitoring and analytics. By closely monitoring the performance of your software, you can identify bottlenecks, analyze the root causes of any issues, and make data-backed optimizations. Here are a few ways to implement performance monitoring and analytics:

  • Real-time monitoring: Utilize tools that provide real-time insights into the performance of your software. This can include metrics such as response time, error rates, and resource utilization. By keeping a close eye on these metrics, you can quickly identify any performance issues and take immediate action.
  • Logging and tracking: Implement robust logging and tracking mechanisms in your software to collect valuable data. This can include logging error messages, user interactions, and performance metrics. Analyzing this data can help you uncover patterns, troubleshoot issues, and optimize your software accordingly.
  • User experience analytics: Understand how users are interacting with your software by implementing user experience analytics tools. These tools provide insights into user behavior, such as click-through rates, conversion rates, and user flows. By analyzing this data, you can identify areas for improvement and optimize the user experience.

User Feedback and Usage Metrics

Another vital component of a data-driven approach is gathering user feedback and collecting usage metrics. Understanding how users are using your software and their satisfaction levels is crucial for optimization. Here’s how you can implement this in your software development process:

  • Feedback collection: Provide mechanisms for users to provide feedback directly within the software. This could be in the form of surveys, feedback forms, or ratings. Collecting this feedback can help you understand user pain points, identify areas for improvement, and prioritize optimization efforts.
  • Usage metrics: Implement tracking mechanisms to collect usage metrics such as the number of active users, frequency of use, and features utilized. This data can provide valuable insights into which parts of your software are most important to users and where optimization efforts should be focused.
  • User testing: Conduct user testing sessions to gather qualitative feedback on your software. Observing users interact with your software can help identify usability issues and areas for improvement. This feedback can be used to make informed decisions on optimization strategies.

By implementing a data-driven approach for software optimization, you can make well-informed decisions, prioritize efforts, and continuously improve the efficiency and quality of your software. Remember, data is your ally in the journey towards software excellence. Embrace it, analyze it, and let it guide your optimization efforts.

Conclusion

In conclusion, maximizing software efficiency and quality is crucial for the success of any software development project. By focusing on effective development processes, utilizing efficient tools, optimizing architecture, implementing effective testing strategies, and adopting a data-driven approach, you can ensure that your software is efficient, reliable, and delivers a great user experience.

Fondling reported at Cal Poly parking structure – Mustang News

Content warning: This article mentions sexual assault. Safer is Cal Poly’s confidential resource for sexual assault and can be reached at 805-756-2282. San Luis Obispo’s Lumina Alliance 24/7 crisis line is available at 805-545-8888. More resources are listed at the end of this article.

A female student reported being fondled in the Grand Avenue parking structure by an unknown man Thursday night.

Cal Poly sent a campus-wide email on Friday about the assault, notifying the campus community that police are asking for help locating the man.

Around 8:40 p.m. on the top floor of the parking structure, “an unknown male approached a female student from behind and slapped her approximately four times on the buttocks,” the email stated.

When the student confronted the man, he said she had a “nice ass,” and asked for her phone number, according to the university email. He then walked down Pacheco toward Slack Street about one minute later.

The email described the perpetrator as a “5’8″, heavy-set, light skinned/’pale-ish’ Hispanic male” in his late 20s to 30-years-old, with a black beard down to his chest. The man was wearing a “baggy” black hoodie, possibly with a small design on it, athletic shorts that appeared to be gray, a gray beanie, calf-high black socks and black shoes. He also had a green lanyard hanging out of his left pocket.

Crime information or suspicious activity can be reported to the Cal Poly Police Department 24/7 at 805-756-2281 or [email protected]

“Respect the rights and boundaries of others,” the Civil Rights and Compliance Office stated in the email.

The email also advised people to trust their instincts, be alert, travel in pairs or groups and to inform friends of “intended locations and times of travel.”

According to the Jeanne Clery Act, Cal Poly is federally mandated to disclose information regarding crimes reported on campus, if the reports meet certain criteria. When the perpetrator’s identity is not known, the case can be deemed a “serious or ongoing threat” and require the campus-wide notification.

The last time Cal Poly sent out notifications regarding sexual assault reports was in October 2021, when two reports were made one week apart. Those cases are no longer under investigation, Mustang News previously reported.

Resources listed at the end of the email include Cal Poly’s Counseling Center, Safer, as well as the university’s Title IX coordinator, who can be reached at 805-756-6770 and [email protected]

Safer can be reached Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 805-756-2282 and offers confidential on-campus support and advocacy surrounding sexual assault, stalking and intimate partner violence for members of the Cal Poly community.

Lumina Alliance in San Luis Obispo offers services surrounding sexual and intimate violence. Their crisis line is available 24/7. To reach the crisis line, call 805-545-8888.
Other resources include SLO County’s Victim and Witness Assistance Services, the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC).

Prospect Report: Bryce And Mason Miller Shine In Pitcher’s Duel

Bryce Miller, RHP, Mariners: Miller made his major league debut on Tuesday and did not fail to deliver, carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning. Miller allowed two hits and a run in the sixth, but finished the day with 10 strikeouts and no walks in the no decision.

Mason Miller, RHP, Athletics: As good as Bryce Miller was in his debut, Mason was even better opposite him for the A’s. In his third major league start the 24-year-old pitched seven no-hit innings, walking four and striking out six. Mason has struck out 17 and walked six over 15.1 innings while posting a 3.52 ERA to start his big league career.

Eury Perez, RHP, Marlins: Perez, one of the top pitching prospects in the sport, has dominated Double-A over five starts in 2023 and looks ready for a promotion to Triple-A. On Tuesday the 20-year-old struck out 11 and walked one over five innings of one-run ball. Perez is 2-1, 2.52 on the year with 33 strikeouts and seven walks in 25 innings.

Colt Keith, 3B, Tigers: Keith played in just 48 games at High-A West Michigan in 2022 before a shoulder injury set him down for the remainder of the regular season. He returned in the Arizona Fall League and showed well, and he’s continued to impress in his first taste of Double-A in 2023. Keith, the Tigers’ No. 5 prospect, on Tuesday crushed his fourth homer of the season, a two-run blast, in Erie’s win over Bowie.

Brooks Lee, SS, Twins: Lee was perhaps the most advanced hitter in the 2022 draft class, and he spent the majority of his pro debut in 2022 at High-A Cedar Rapids. The Twins pushed him to Double-A Wichita to start the 2023 season and he’s continued to perform, with a hit in 17 of 20 games. On Tuesday the 22-year-old collected his eighth double of the season as part of a 2-for-4 day.

Andrew Abbott, LHP, Reds: Abbott struggled for much of the 2022 season at Double-A Chattanooga before closing out the campaign with three consecutive scoreless starts. He carried that momentum over to the 2023 season, dominating the level over three starts to earn a promotion to Triple-A Louisville. In his second start at Triple-A on Tuesday the 23-year-old lefthander cruised to a win, striking out eight and allowing two hits and two walks over five scoreless innings. Abbott doesn’t have a plus offering in his arsenal, but he throws plenty of strikes with plus control and could help the Reds later this year as a solid back-end starter.

Noah Cameron, LHP, Royals: Cameron, the Royals’ 2021 seventh-round pick from Central Arkansas, has excelled to start the 2023 season back at High-A Quad Cities. On Tuesday he struck out 11 over five one-run innings, allowing two hits and walking three. Through five starts in 2023 he’s struck out 42 and walked just eight while posting a 2.55 ERA.

Colton Cowser, OF, Orioles: Cowser turned in his eighth multi-hit game of the season on Tuesday, collecting his fifth homer, doubling once and knocking in three.
