Guest column: Experience Club honors academic and behavioral achievements at Williams High School | Williams-Grand Canyon News | Williams-Grand Canyon, AZ

At Williams High School (WHS), a group of motivated students took the initiative to establish a club that celebrates academic accomplishments and positive behavior. Known as the Experience Club, this organization has quickly gained popularity and is making a positive impact on the school community. Under the guidance of Mr. Sanzone, their dedicated sponsor, the club members have demonstrated remarkable leadership skills and a commitment to their academic and personal growth.

“As the club sponsor and a teacher, it’s been encouraging watching the club officers develop their leadership and administration skills,” Sanzone said. “Whether it’s been leading club meetings, making decisions, running their Tie-Dye shirt fundraiser, or motivating other students to improve their grades and behaviors to qualify for the fun trips the club members have earned, the students have consistently demonstrated skills they will use after graduating from high school.”

The Experience Club was conceived earlier this year when a group of students approached Mr. Sanzone, a WHS teacher, with the idea of creating a club that would recognize and honor achievements in academics and behavior. After assuring Mr. Sanzone of their dedication and willingness to put in the necessary effort, they formed the Experience Club. The name was chosen to reflect the club’s goal of providing students with unique experiences as a reward for their hard work and discipline.

Since its inception, the Experience Club has witnessed substantial growth, with 41 students joining initially and a current membership of 30. The club’s popularity has extended beyond WHS, as 25 new students from 8th grade schools in the district have expressed interest in joining after attending the “Eighth Grade Move Up Day” event. The students were captivated by the exciting opportunities the club offers.

As part of their fundraising efforts, the Experience Club is currently selling Tie-Dye Shirts for $10.00, with an additional $5.00 charge for personalized shirts. By purchasing these shirts, individuals not only support the club financially but also contribute to promoting student growth, celebrating academic achievements, and positive behaviors.

The Experience Club officers include: President Ashley Grantham, Vice-President–Gabriel Miner, Treasure–Jennavieve Pacheco and Secretary–Logan Sloss.

“Its a pretty fun club, last time we went to Skyzone, its a very welcome and inviting club,” said member Joslyn Anslow. “I’ve made very good friends in the club.”

The Experience Club organizes various trips and leisure activities for its members as a way to reward their academic achievements and exemplary conduct. From visits to wildlife parks, museums, and amusement parks, the club offers opportunities for students to socialize, learn, and celebrate their accomplishments. The next planned trip is to Six Flags, promising an exciting adventure for all participants.

“You have to keep C’s or better and have no displinary points,” Ashley Graham said. “We meet once a week and we talk about what fundraising and places we want to go.”

The Experience Club has had a positive impact on WHS and the wider Williams community. By fostering a culture of excellence, the club encourages students to strive for academic success and good citizenship. Through their achievements, club members demonstrate that hard work, dedication, and determination can lead to great accomplishments. Moreover, the Experience Club’s emphasis on celebrating achievements and providing unique experiences strengthens the bond within the school community, creating lasting memories and fostering social and educational opportunities.

The Experience Club at WHS stands as a testament to the power of student-led initiatives and the impact they can have on academic and personal development. This club, with its focus on recognizing achievements and promoting a culture of excellence, has become a valuable asset to the school community. By providing opportunities for students to grow and celebrate their accomplishments, the Experience Club is shaping the leaders and achievers of tomorrow.

To support the Experience Club and its mission to foster student success, you can contact a club member or Mr. Sanzone at the high school. Together, let’s empower our students to strive for greatness and make the most of their educational journey.

Jennavieve Pacheco, Gabriel Miner and Thomas Sanzone

Korea: A Conversation with Ramon Pacheco Pardo and Victor Cha

Korea has a long, riveting history—it is also a divided nation. In Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo draw on decades of research to explore the history of modern Korea, from the late nineteenth century, Japanese occupation, and Cold War division to the present day. In this exchange, Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo explore South Korea’s entrance on the international stage, North Korea’s continued isolationism after COVID-19, and how 21st century assumptions about each country may not be accurate as we think.

VC: South Korea has always been caught between the great powers of the region, a function of geography and internal weakness.  But now on the heels of the State Visit by South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol to the United States and the G-7 Summit in Hiroshima, South Korea is displaying a confidence to play a larger role on the international stage than we have seen historically.  The government talks about standing up for freedom and democracy, support for human rights, advancing the climate change cause, and countering economic coercion.  While some of this has to do with the current administration, I think it also has to do with an external environment for South Korea that is deeply uncertain.  The war in Europe, China’s increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea and across the Taiwan Strait, North Korea’s missile and nuclear weapons campaign, and the uncertainty of a possible return to “America First” policies in the U.S. after the 2024 election are all putting new external pressures on Korea that we have not seen since the swirl of balance of power politics in East Asia circa late 1800s.  But unlike over a century ago, Korea is stronger internally and more willing to take a stand.

RP: Those are very good points. And I want to draw a comparison with North Korea. One of the themes of our book is the extent to which the two Koreas have taken divergent paths, especially from the 1970s onwards. So while we see South Korea rubbing shoulders with G-7 members, receiving the leaders of European and Southeast Asian powers, and being invited to NATO gatherings, North Korea is only just now reopening the borders following the COVID-19 pandemic—the last country in the world to do so. In my view, this is a sign of weakness. The Kim family has been afraid of the pandemic ravaging the country, given its subpar health infrastructure. And it has actually taken advantage of the pandemic to increase control over its own population, while not being particularly bothered with foreign diplomats and aid workers leaving the country, given its mistrust of foreigners. Contrast this with South Korea, which never fully closed its borders during the pandemic and is now seeking to attract as many foreign tourists as possible. The latter, by the way, is a point that we discuss in our book when we talk about the increasing international outlook of the South Korean people. Plus, the key question that we are now focusing on with regards to North Korea is whether it will conduct its seventh nuclear test. The Kim regime thinks that this is what makes its country strong, rather than pursuing the more successful and open path that South Korea is following.

VC: You are right about that.  South Korea’s path towards liberal markets and democracy has made it more successful than anyone could ever have imagined.  As we cover in Korea: A New History of South & North, there was a time when U.S. intelligence agencies predicted that South Korea would not advance economically beyond an agriculture-based economy with possibly at the high end, light manufactured goods. Boy, was that ever wrong.  As U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimundo said on President Yoon’s State Visit to the White House in April, South Korea sits alongside the United States and others as a technology giant.  High-tech personal devices, TVs, and household consumer goods made in South Korea sit in almost every household.  Electric vehicle batteries, memory chips, green ships, and bioscience research in Korea are having global ramifications.  We also write a great deal in the book about the other major export of South Korea—its cultural power. BlackpinkBTSSquid Gams, and Parasite among other cultural products are familiar to younger generations around continents, and defining fashion, music, and entertainment going forward.

RP: Your last point raises an interesting argument about the way in which others relate to the Koreas today. To begin with, it is interesting than we someone mentions ‘Korea’, we know that they are talking about the South. This underscores that the economy, technology, and culture of South Korea are much better known than they were in the past—and also that South Korea has “won” the battle for recognition between the two Koreas, which we discuss in the book. Conversely, North Korea is usually seen as poor, hermetic, backward, and even mysterious. In our book, we show that this is not an accurate picture. As a case in point, the people-led jangmadang or markets that have been spreading throughout the country for almost three decades now show that North Korea is changing. But if we look at its leadership, Kim Jong-un is the third generation of the Kim family to run the country. This is the only communist dynasty in the world. The contrast with South Korea and its vibrant democracy could not be more obvious. And ultimately, our book is about this contrast: how a unified country for centuries, Korea, today is divided between two countries that are almost the polar oppositions, South and North. It is a fascinating story, which we had great fun researching and writing and which we hope readers will enjoy.

JULIE: The Musical at The Hope Mill Theatre

The show is a tad aggressive in the first half, with the audience on two separate occasions practically being ordered to show their appreciation. “You clap now!” is a bizarre way to build rapport, and the thought crossed my mind to fold my arms in protest. Anyway, the narrative in the musical centres around the life of Julie d’Aubigny (1673-1707), a version of which is played by Sam Kearney-Edwardes, who also plays a version of the show’s composer, lyricist and writer Abey Bradbury, with repeated assertions that it’s their play and therefore they are at liberty to do what they will with it. I’m not sure what to make, either, of the disparaging of other shows that allegedly have ‘boring’ and ‘tedious’ expositions, especially as no examples are given.

There is, apparently, only one major deviation from events that actually happened in d’Aubigny’s life, at least according to accounts from her contemporaries. Purists, perhaps as ever, will find much that rankles them – did they really use microphones at the start of the eighteenth century, for instance? It is, frankly, rather like criticising the West End production of Les Misérables, or indeed this show, for having French characters who all sing in English. Historical verisimilitude also goes out of the window when it comes to the costumes. The cast all play instruments, providing gloriously sustained displays of actor-musicianship. As they took their positions on stage before the show got underway, they looked to me like entrants in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Indeed, the evening felt a little like Eurovision – there wasn’t an hour or more of vote results being rattled through, but there was an incredible mix of different musical styles. Structurally, the show is deliberately messy, with interjections and interruptions that gave the feel that d’Aubigny wasn’t in total control of her story after all. The production has an acquired sense of humour – I’m pleased to report I eventually acquired it. Even so, it is incredibly hammy in parts, and some of the narrative points are somewhat overlaboured. Did we really need to be told a convent in Avignon, in line with every religious institution, exists ‘for the love of God’, quite so many times?

The other four actors play at least fourteen other characters between them, and despite the grassroots feel of the production, there are several members of the French nobility in the mix. Not that d’Aubigny cared much for social status, with one of her lovers, Amelie (Fabien Soto Pacheco, who has an excellent falsetto) being, according to the programme, “a merchant’s daughter who looks great in a nun’s habit”. Alexander Tilley’s scene-stealer moments went down well with the audience, while Sophie Coward and Georgia Liela Stoller were as good at portraying boisterous moments as they were poignant ones.

For a show about a woman who pursued a career in the opera, it is perhaps a tad surprising to discover there is no operatic content in it. (Well, there is, sort of, in the last couple of minutes of the interval.) Kearney-Edwardes’ narrator is almost at pains to emphasise that it’s not strictly necessary and nobody came to hear arias and recitatives as the Paris Opera would have performed them anyway. It’s the sort of musical that would work well at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and has indeed performed there, and has been revised and expanded for this tour. Proceeding at a moderately brisk pace, there are no big scene changes to contend with, with the set remaining largely as it is throughout. There’s ultimately nothing wrong with little asides to the audience such as, “We’re in the opera house now”, just so the audience is all on the same page.

Despite an abrasive start, this is ultimately a celebration of someone who wasn’t here for a long time but rather a good time. The musical’s clarion call to be more Julie and embrace life to the full irrespective of life’s challenges is loud and clear. A quirky and curious production best enjoyed by those looking for something unusual.

Review by Chris Omaweng

Julie D’Aubigny is down in history as one of the most chaotic characters to have ever lived – one of the first public figures to live as an openly bisexual woman, she seduced nuns, duelled multiple men at once, burnt down convents, was bribed by princes, innovated opera – all before she turned 30!

Featuring Live Music, Comedy, Tap Dancing Sword Fights, Twerking Nuns, Kazoo Choruses…and that’s just the first half hour…

JULIE: The Musical celebrates this extraordinary life, queerness and carving a place for yourself in a world not built for you.
