Dining taken to the next level with ‘Staycations’ at Tapestry

Tapestry at Village Gate West residents enjoy a spectacularly-themed Staycation that brings together great food, service and a memorable theme that connects residents in a fun-filled evening. Pictured is the “Cirque du Soleil – Expect the Unexpected” event.

A night out at the circus? A trip to Tuscany? Or perhaps a Caribbean cruise? Residents of Tapestry at Village Gate West have been on all these adventures – and more – with our spectacular “Staycations”.

At Tapestry, we pride ourselves on featuring excellent community restaurants which offer high quality, delicious and nutritious meals. Our culinary team also likes to take things to the next level with specially themed dining events. These Staycation events offer an exceptional meal in good company with creative themes that can transport residents to a special place, time or event. Past event themes have included The Love Boat, Spring in Tuscany and James Bond Night. Seating in the private dining room is limited to 12 and the events are always full, often with a waitlist.

Décor and culinary offerings are aligned to each theme, which is confirmed by the culinary team with resident input. Executive Chef at Village Gate West, Tiffany Pacheco, who creates menus matching each theme, says she gets inspired by watching chefs compete on the TV Show ‘Top Chef’. The team sometimes aligns Staycation themes to a special date such as Valentine’s Day and, Chef Tiffany says, they love creating something unexpected and fun for residents.

One of the more recent Staycation events was “Cirque du Soleil – Expect the Unexpected”. “Cirque du Soleil performed in Toronto in June, and I thought bringing the circus to Tapestry would be such a fun idea!” says Chef Tiffany.

Incredible menus a star feature of Staycations

The inventive menu for this event included fried plantain with bacon chip and brulé blue cheese, pan-seared scallops with fire-roasted red pepper, peanuts and citrus butter, roasted lamb with honey Dijon puree, and cinnamon sugar dusted donut holes with an assortment of interesting fillings for dessert!

The “deliciously delightful” Spring in Tuscany Staycation was a picture perfect visit to Italy.

Chef Tiffany also explains each course during the events. “The residents anticipate it and are very attentive to each description,” she says. “A lot of thought and detail goes into each plated item, and it translates.”

Tapestry residents give the Staycation events very positive reviews. “The quality of the food and the diversity is wonderful,” says Kathleen, who attended a recent event. “And it was a fun and festive atmosphere,” she adds.

In addition to the creative and delicious meals served, residents also appreciate the thought and effort that goes into transforming the dining space for each event.

“When I walk in, the room is always stunning,” says Elise, who has participated in several Staycation events. “The centrepiece has been unique for each theme and the table looks beautiful with candles, flowers and special linens. The presentation is so exquisite you feel like you’re in high society!”

For the Cirque du Soleil dinner, the décor featured bubbles, baubles and an overall carnival theme with a popcorn machine. “[These events] encourage one to get all jazzed up because it is something special,” adds Elise.

“I always try to bring the atmosphere of the place/theme into the private dining room,” says restaurant manager Larissa Gobbi. “I want the residents to be transported to the Love Boat or to Tuscany, or our other locations. When they arrive, their eyes light up and they smile with joy.”

An exquisite handmade delight for another spectacular Staycation at Village Gate West.

Residents also like to get into the full spirit of the affair by dressing to match the theme – blue and white nautical wear for The Love Boat, and full glamour for the James Bond theme, for example. Plus, Larissa says, with the theme, decorations and food being great conversation starters, “It’s the perfect occasion to meet other residents and share stories.”

Larissa says the entire culinary team enjoys planning the events. “You feel the enthusiasm of everyone involved, and it goes beyond the decorations; Chef Tiffany and the culinary team work hard in researching and creating the incredible menus, so that everything turns out perfectly and as we imagined.”

Adds Chef Tiffany, “We have been getting such positive feedback from the residents, and seeing them thoroughly enjoy themselves from beginning to end is the cherry on top that makes all of the hard work worthwhile. The challenge is to try and top the last event!”

These Staycation events are a unique and wonderful way we at Tapestry build community and connection, while helping residents celebrate different cultures while enjoying great food and wine.

If you are considering making a move to retirement living, please contact us. We would be pleased to have you experience the work of our talented and dedicated culinary team first hand by hosting you for lunch and a tour.

Sanchez Announces $1 Million in “Participatory Budgeting” Projects

District 14 City Council Member Pierina Sanchez announced a million-dollar investment in various quality-of-life improvements going to schools, libraries, and senior centers in the district on June 20. The funding came by way of New York City Council’s participatory budgeting (PB) process which, according to New York City Council, is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget.

According to the council, the concept originated in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1989. Today, there are more than 3,000 participatory budgeting processes around the world, most at the municipal level. PB was launched in New York City in 2011 and is a voluntary process in which council members can decide whether to opt in or out.

This year, according to the council, 29 council members across New York City asked residents how to spend nearly $30 million in capital funding, specifically for local improvements to schools, parks, libraries and other public spaces. PB NYC funds physical infrastructure projects that benefit the public, cost at least $50,000, and have a lifespan of at least 5 years.

It’s the second consecutive year that $1 million goes to District 14 as part of the PB process, which included allowing constituents the opportunity to both pitch and vote on which projects to fund. Sanchez told Norwood News on June 20, We had a thousand people vote this year, 800 last year, which is pretty high, especially when you look across the city and engagement and so, it’s just really telling to me when we put out the word for the community and the community decides to invest in schools, invest in our senior centers, invests in our [inaudible], it just speaks volumes about what the community cares about and it gives me guidance about what to prioritize and what to fight for.”

When we mentioned that $1 million seemed like a substantial amount of money for the community to decide how to spend, Sanchez, who, as reported, is the presumed winner of the June 2023 Democratic Primary in District 14, following a challenge by the State committeewoman for assembly district 78, Rachel Bradshaw, said each council member can decide on the allotted funding amount in the context of the PB process.

“These one million dollars are going to have a transformative impact on our community, not just because we’re fixing things up and making things better physically, but because we did it together,” said the council member who first won her seat in 2021. “That’s what participatory budgeting is about – sharing and empowering.”

The funding has been distributed across several different projects. The largest amount went to M.S. 390, where Sanchez made the announcement, amid cheers from the students and staff in attendance. The school received $750,000 to carry out upgrades to its gym. New flooring, basketball hoops, and equipment is also covered.

Sanchez said, “This will provide our young people with an excellent modern space to nurture their physical and mental well-being.” Meanwhile, M.S. 390 School Principal Andrea Varona, said, “It’s life-changing for our students. It’s a moment of joy, and now we can say we are going to have a gym well-equipped for our students, which is rewarding and exciting.”

The second largest portion of the PB funding went to The Francis Martin Library, which received $64,470 to fund technology upgrades and create a mini STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) lab.

According to Melody Ramos, a library assistant at the library, Makerspace Mondays is one of the library’s more popular programs. Through Makerspace Mondays, she said kids get access to a 3D printer. However, she said the project had only been temporary due to a lack of funding.

With the funding the library has now been awarded from the participatory budgeting process, it will be able to buy a 3D printer along with other computers. “The community showed up for us,” said Ramos. “They put our names in the game and that’s why we’re here right now.”

In addition, the BronxWorks Senior Center was awarded $50,000 which will go towards renovations of the cafeteria. “This will ensure that our seniors have a comfortable and welcoming space to enjoy their meals and engage with their peers,” said Sanchez.

A new media center will also be established at P.S. 206, with $51,234 going towards the project, helping the school’s computer science, coding, and app design programs. “This investment will empower our youth in the neighborhood with the tools and resources that they need to thrive in the digital age,” said Sanchez.

University Woods Park will also be receiving a portion of the budget, with $55,000 going towards a tree planting project at the park.

District 14 broadly encompasses some or all of the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge Heights, Fordham Manor, Fordham Heights, Bedford Park, University Heights, Mt. Hope and Morris Heights.

Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco Expects To Be Healthy By Week 1

Isiah Pacheco entered his rookie season with tempered expectations, but by the Super Bowl he was the Chiefs’ lead early-down running back. His health status has thus been one to watch over the course of the offseason.

Pacheco missed minicamp and OTAs while recovering from shoulder and hand surgeries, after being able to play through those ailments without missing any regular or postseason game action. The seventh-rounder has not yet been cleared to return to full practice, but he is optimistic he will be at 100% in time for the start of the regular season.

“I trust the staff and we were able to work out a plan,” the 24-year-old said about his current recovery situation. “I’m feeling great right now. It’s just a process and that takes time” (h/t ESPN’s Adam Teicher).

Pacheco took part in a limited capacity in a minicamp held by the Chiefs ahead of training camp, doing so while wearing a non-contact uniform. He thus has a long way to go before being cleared in full to return to the lineup, but it will be a welcomed development for Kansas City when that takes place. The Rutgers product is in line for another heavy workload in Year 2.

With former first-rounder Clyde Edwards-Helaire missing seven games during the regular season and being made a healthy scratch for the Super Bowl, both Pacheco and pass-catching veteran Jerick McKinnon saw an uptick in usage. The latter scored 10 total touchdowns (including nine through the air), earning him a third Kansas City contract. The former ran for 830 yards and five touchdowns during the regular season, on an average 4.9 yards per carry. The latter figure rose to 5.1 during the postseason.

The Chiefs elected not to sign or draft another back this offseason, but they declined Edwards-Helaire’s fifth-year option. That will make his 2023 performance one to watch closely as he approaches free agency and the team looks to find the ideal balance of snap shares between their three contributors. Pacheco will no doubt have a signficant role come the fall, though, especially since he is likely to be healed in full by that point.

“Enhancing security and trust is crucial for e-commerce businesses. Technologies like blockchain, biometric authentication, and fraud detection systems are revolutionizing the security landscape and helping businesses establish trust with their customers.”

Streamlining Supply Chain and Logistics

In the fast-paced world of e-commerce, streamlining supply chain and logistics is crucial to ensure efficient and timely delivery of products to customers. Technology has opened up new possibilities to optimize this process, resulting in improved customer satisfaction and reduced costs. Let’s explore some of the key technologies that are revolutionizing supply chain management in the e-commerce industry.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become a game-changer in supply chain and logistics. IoT refers to the network of physical devices, vehicles, and sensors that are embedded with software, enabling them to collect and exchange data. In the context of e-commerce, IoT helps in real-time tracking and monitoring of shipments and inventory. Here are some examples of how IoT is transforming supply chain and logistics:

  • GPS-enabled tracking devices attached to packages allow businesses to monitor the exact location and movement of each shipment, ensuring transparency and reducing the risk of lost or delayed packages.
  • IoT sensors installed in warehouses can continuously monitor inventory levels, alerting the supply chain managers to restock when necessary, thereby avoiding stockouts or overstock situations.
  • Smart shelves equipped with IoT sensors can automatically detect when a product is running low and trigger a replenishment order, ensuring that popular items are always in stock.

Warehouse Automation

Warehouse automation involves the use of robotics and automation technologies to streamline operations in fulfillment centers. By replacing manual labor with automated systems, e-commerce businesses can achieve higher efficiency, accuracy, and speed in their warehouse operations. Some notable warehouse automation technologies include:

  • Automated picking systems: Robots are programmed to move around the warehouse, locate the required items, and retrieve them for order fulfillment. This reduces the need for manual picking, resulting in faster and more accurate order processing.
  • Conveyor systems: Conveyor belts transport items within the warehouse, eliminating the need for manual carrying and reducing the time taken to move goods from one location to another.
  • Automated sorting systems: Automated sorting machines can scan and sort packages based on their destinations, ensuring that each package is directed to the correct shipping area without manual intervention.

Drone Delivery

Drone delivery is an emerging technology that holds immense potential in revolutionizing the last-mile delivery process. While still in its early stages, companies like Amazon and Google’s Wing have been testing drone delivery services. Here’s how drone delivery can benefit e-commerce businesses:

  • Faster delivery: Drones can navigate through traffic and reach their destinations much faster than traditional delivery methods. This enables e-commerce businesses to offer same-day or even within-hours delivery options to their customers, setting them apart from their competitors.
  • Cost-effective: Drones can significantly reduce the cost associated with last-mile delivery. They do not require fuel, and their maintenance costs are relatively lower compared to traditional delivery vehicles. This cost savings can be passed on to customers, resulting in competitive pricing.
  • Accessibility: Drones have the potential to reach remote or hard-to-access locations where traditional vehicles may face challenges. This opens up opportunities for e-commerce businesses to expand their customer base and serve customers in previously untapped areas.

With the adoption of IoT, warehouse automation, and drone delivery, e-commerce businesses can optimize their supply chain and logistics processes to meet the growing demands of customers. These technologies not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute to increased customer satisfaction through faster deliveries and improved visibility throughout the shipping process. Stay ahead of the competition by embracing these technological advancements in supply chain and logistics.

Improved Payment and Checkout Processes

In the fast-paced world of e-commerce, one of the key factors in determining the success of an online retailer is the ease and efficiency of the payment and checkout processes. Customers expect a seamless experience when it comes to making a purchase, and retailers need to stay ahead of the game by adopting technologies that streamline these processes. Let’s explore some of the innovative solutions that are transforming payment and checkout in the world of online retail.

Mobile Payment Solutions

With the rise of smartphones, mobile payment solutions have become increasingly popular. These solutions allow customers to make purchases using their mobile devices, eliminating the need for physical cards or cash. Some of the most widely used mobile payment methods include Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Pay. These solutions are not only convenient for customers, but they also offer enhanced security through tokenization, where a unique token is used instead of the customer’s actual credit card information.

One-Click Checkout

One of the biggest pain points for customers during the checkout process is having to enter their payment and shipping information repeatedly. To address this issue, many online retailers have implemented one-click checkout options. This feature allows customers to store their payment and shipping details securely on the retailer’s website, enabling them to complete their purchase with just a single click. Companies like Amazon have pioneered this technology, making it a standard feature in online retail.

Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency has gained significant attention in recent years, and some retailers have started accepting digital currencies as a form of payment. Cryptocurrency transactions offer several benefits, including enhanced security, reduced transaction fees, and faster cross-border payments. Retailers who accept cryptocurrencies can tap into a growing market of tech-savvy customers who prefer this payment method. However, it’s important to note that the acceptance of cryptocurrencies is still not widespread, and their value can be volatile.

“By offering multiple payment options, online retailers can cater to a wider customer base and provide a more seamless shopping experience.” – Expert Quote

Incorporating these technologies into the payment and checkout processes can help online retailers optimize the customer experience and boost conversions. But it’s also important for retailers to remember that having a variety of payment options is crucial. Not all customers will have the same preferences, so offering diverse payment methods, including traditional options like credit cards and PayPal, is essential.

By keeping up with the latest trends in payment and checkout processes, online retailers can provide a frictionless shopping experience for their customers. These innovations not only improve customer satisfaction but also contribute to increased sales and customer loyalty. So, don’t be afraid to embrace these technologies and take your online retail business to the next level!

Optimizing Product Search and Discovery

In the vast world of online retail, one of the biggest challenges for e-commerce businesses is ensuring that customers can easily find the products they are looking for. This is where optimizing product search and discovery comes into play. By implementing advanced technologies and strategies, businesses can enhance the search experience for their customers, improving customer satisfaction and ultimately boosting sales. Let’s explore some of the key technologies and techniques that are revolutionizing product search and discovery in the world of e-commerce.

Voice Search and Voice-Enabled Devices

Voice search has become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to the rise of smart speakers and virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant. Rather than typing out a search query, users can simply speak into their device and ask for what they’re looking for. This technology has had a significant impact on e-commerce, as it presents a new way for customers to search for products. With the increasing accuracy and capabilities of voice recognition technology, businesses can optimize their online stores to accommodate voice search queries. This includes using natural language processing and optimizing product descriptions with conversational keywords that align with how customers speak.

Visual Search

Another exciting technology that is changing the way customers search for products online is visual search. This technology allows users to take a picture or upload an image to search for similar products. For example, if a customer sees a pair of shoes they like in a magazine or on someone’s feet, they can take a picture and use a visual search feature to find similar shoes online. Visual search is particularly beneficial for fashion, home decor, and furniture industries, where visuals play a significant role in the buying decision process. By implementing visual search capabilities on their websites or mobile apps, e-commerce businesses can improve the search experience for their customers and increase the chances of conversion.

Recommendation Engines

Recommendation engines have become an integral part of the online shopping experience. These engines analyze customer data, such as past purchases, browsing history, and demographic information, to provide personalized product recommendations. By leveraging machine learning algorithms, recommendation engines can accurately predict and suggest products that customers are likely to be interested in. This not only enhances the search and discovery process but also increases customer engagement and loyalty. E-commerce businesses can implement recommendation engines on their websites or use third-party solutions to provide personalized product recommendations, ultimately leading to higher conversion rates.

Optimizing product search and discovery is crucial for staying competitive in the ever-growing e-commerce industry. By embracing technologies such as voice search, visual search, and recommendation engines, businesses can provide a seamless and personalized search experience for their customers. This not only improves customer satisfaction but also increases the likelihood of conversion and repeat business. So, if you’re an e-commerce business looking to take your online retail game to the next level, investing in these technologies is a smart move.

Efficient Inventory Management

When it comes to running a successful e-commerce business, inventory management plays a crucial role. Effectively managing your inventory ensures that you have the right products available at the right time, minimizing stockouts and overstocking. By implementing efficient inventory management practices, you can improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and maximize customer satisfaction. Here are some key strategies and technologies that can help you streamline your inventory management process:

Automated Inventory Tracking

Keeping track of inventory manually is not only time-consuming but also prone to errors. Automation technology can help you accurately track your inventory levels in real-time, providing you with up-to-date information on stock availability. By implementing barcode scanning, RFID tagging, or other automated tracking systems, you can easily monitor your inventory movement and make informed decisions about restocking or reordering.

Demand Forecasting

Demand forecasting is a crucial aspect of inventory management. By accurately predicting customer demand, you can optimize your inventory levels and avoid situations of excess or shortage. Utilize historical data, market trends, and predictive analytics to forecast future demand patterns. This will enable you to make proactive inventory decisions and ensure that you have the right products in stock to meet customer needs.

Dynamic Pricing

Implementing dynamic pricing strategies can help you optimize your inventory management and maximize profitability. By adjusting prices based on factors like demand, competitor pricing, and product popularity, you can effectively manage your inventory levels. For example, if a product is in high demand, raising the price can help control sales and prevent stockouts. Conversely, reducing prices on slow-moving items can help clear out excess inventory.

In addition to these strategies, various inventory management software solutions are available in the market that can help simplify and automate your inventory management processes. These tools offer features like real-time inventory tracking, demand forecasting, automated replenishment, and more.

“Efficient inventory management is like a well-oiled machine – it keeps your e-commerce business running smoothly and profitably.”

Sustainable Packaging and Delivery

In today’s world, where environmental concerns are at the forefront of many people’s minds, sustainable packaging and delivery solutions have become a key focus for the e-commerce industry. Customers are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their purchases, and they expect businesses to take responsibility for minimizing this impact. As a result, online retailers are embracing new technologies and strategies to reduce packaging waste and adopt eco-friendly shipping options.

Reducing Packaging Waste

  • Online retailers are finding innovative ways to reduce packaging waste, such as using minimal and recyclable materials.

  • Last-mile delivery, which is the final leg of the delivery process, is an area where significant progress is being made in sustainability.
  • Delivery companies are exploring alternative methods such as electric vehicles, drones, and even delivery robots to reduce carbon emissions and congestion on the roads.
  • By leveraging these technologies, businesses can ensure that their products reach customers quickly and efficiently while minimizing their impact on the environment.

In addition to the environmental benefits, implementing sustainable packaging and delivery practices can also provide tangible business advantages. These include:

  • Enhanced Brand Image: Embracing sustainability can help create a positive brand image and attract eco-conscious customers who actively seek out environmentally-friendly products and services.
  • Cost Savings: By implementing efficient packaging solutions and optimizing delivery routes, businesses can reduce waste and cut costs associated with packaging materials and transportation.
  • Regulatory Compliance: As governments worldwide implement stricter regulations on packaging waste and emissions, adopting sustainable practices can help businesses stay ahead of these requirements and avoid potential fines or reputational damage.

By prioritizing sustainable packaging and delivery, online retailers can align their business practices with consumer expectations, reduce their environmental impact, and gain a competitive advantage in an increasingly eco-conscious marketplace.

E-commerce Analytics and Insights

As the e-commerce industry continues to evolve, data and analytics have become invaluable tools for online retailers. By utilizing the power of analytics, businesses can gain valuable insights into their customers, products, and overall performance. These insights not only help in understanding customer behavior but also guide strategic business decisions. Let’s explore how e-commerce analytics and insights can revolutionize the way online retailers operate.

Big Data Analytics

One of the key technologies transforming the e-commerce landscape is big data analytics. With the vast amount of data generated from customer interactions, transactions, and website activity, big data analytics allows businesses to uncover hidden patterns and trends. By analyzing this data, retailers can gain valuable insights into customer preferences, shopping habits, and product demand.

  • Benefits of Big Data Analytics in E-commerce:
  • Customer Segmentation: Identify and target specific customer segments based on their buying behavior and preferences.
  • Personalized Marketing: Deliver tailored marketing campaigns and offers based on individual customer preferences.
  • Inventory Optimization: Use data-driven insights to optimize inventory levels, reducing the risk of overstocking or understocking.

California want to make taxing easier with ACA 1 – Daily News

California’s Democratic supermajority wants to make it easier for local governments to take more of your money. On Wednesday, the Assembly’s local government committee advanced Assembly Constitutional Amendment 1, which would ask voters to lower the threshold by which certain bonds and taxes can be approved at the local level.

Specifically, according to the committee’s bill analysis, “ACA 1 lowers the voter threshold from a two-thirds supermajority to 55% majority to approve local (city, county, and special district) GO bonds and certain special taxes for affordable housing, public infrastructure, and permanent supportive housing projects, and defines those terms.”

The proposal, introduced by Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, D-Winters, is backed by the usual suspects, like from big government employee unions (California Professional Firefighters, California School Employees Association, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) but also YIMBY groups who want to see more government funding go toward housing.

If approved, ACA 1 would place the decision to lower the taxing threshold before voters alongside other ballot measures. This conveniently gives state lawmakers who vote to advance ACA 1 cover to say that they think it should be up to voters, not that they necessarily support the measure.

As the California Taxpayers Association notes, “This measure proposes to make it easier for local governments to increase various taxes, including sales taxes and property taxes. Higher sales taxes increase the cost of home construction and everyday necessities used by homeowners and renters, while property taxes increase the burden of homeownership — all of which make housing less affordable for working families, including renters.”

These very practical points fell on deaf ears in the Assembly’s local government committee, with Southern California Democratic Assemblymembers Blanca Pacheco of Downey, James Ramos of San Bernardino County and Juan Carrillo of Palmdale voting to advance the proposal. Orange County Republican Assemblymember Diane Dixon rightly voted against it.

Voters should remember this come the next election.

Opinion |

As also pointed out by the California Taxpayers Association, Californians generally feel overtaxed as it is. “A March 2022 Public Policy Institute of California poll found that 62 percent of Californians believe state and local taxes are too high,” they note.

Indeed, this is consistent with the 2020 vote of Californians to reject a measure to undermine Proposition 13 and create a split roll property tax system to increase taxes on certain commercial and industrial properties.

Sacramento lawmakers should listen to their constituents. Shelve any tax increase or effort to make tax hikes or bonds easier to pass, and make sure government is managing the money it has well before trying to shift more of the burden to taxpayers. Reject ACA 1. If it makes it to the ballot, reject that, too.

England U21s 1-0 Spain U21s: Player ratings as Young Lions seal Euro Under-21 glory

England ended their 39-year wait for European Under-21 glory with a gritty 1-0 victory over pre-tournament favourites Spain on Saturday to get their hands on the trophy.

A cagey affair was decided late in first-half stoppage time as Cole Palmer’s free-kick crashed off the back of Curtis Jones and ricocheted into the Spanish net before anybody could process what had happened.

Spain could’ve equalised in the 97th minute from the penalty spot but England stopper James Trafford pulled off a glorious double save to seal the victory for the Young Lions.

It was nearly the perfect start for England when Anthony Gordon stung the gloves of Arnau Tenas five minutes in and drove in a low cross just seconds later, but some excellent defending from Jon Pacheco prevented Morgan Gibbs-White from tapping home an opener.

Spain’s first sight of goal came eight minutes later through Alex Baena, but the Villarreal midfielder’s strike from range fizzed wide of James Trafford’s goal.

La Roja started to take control of the possession battle as the clock ticked on and Aitor Paredes watched a header trickle wide from a corner as Spain tried to make the most of their growing control.

The tempo of the first half slowed down as the game descended into a tactical battle, but loose passes and niggly fouls from both sides kept the goalmouth action at a premium.

Levi Colwill headed against the post shortly before the interval, but England squeezed themselves ahead in stoppage time as Palmer’s free-kick ended up in the back of the net after a wicked deflection off Jones’ back which, somehow, sparked a touchline brawl between the two benches. Red cards were shown to coaches Ashley Cole and Carlos Rivera to bring the half to a close.

Spain had the ball in the back of Trafford’s net five minutes after the restart but the offside flag was quickly raised and Abel Ruiz’s header was chalked off.

Gibbs-White and Gordon once again failed to combine from close range. The latter’s cross was fizzed in at an awkward height for the Nottingham Forest man, who couldn’t sort his feet out and squirmed the ball wide.

Jones nearly added a lovely second shortly after but his strike was well kept out by Tenas, while Spain’s first shot on target of the entire game came in the 68th minute as Ruiz’s low drive landed comfortably in Trafford’s hands.

As the clock ticked on, Spain began throwing bodies forwards and putting the England backline under real pressure, but Tenas had to make an excellent save to stop Noni Madueke from netting a late goal which would have killed the game.

With 96 minutes on the clock, Spain were handed a lifeline as VAR clocked a foul on Ruiz from Colwill, but the dominant figure of Trafford saved from Ruiz and kept out the follow-up to steal the headlines and steer England to glory.

England U21s player ratings (4-4-2)

England had to work hard / Sebastian Frej/MB Media/GettyImages

GK: James Trafford – 7/10 – The hero of the day with an excellent penalty save in the dying embers.

RB: James Garner – 7/10 – His biggest test of the tournament but Garner held his own up against the electric Gomez.

CB: Taylor Harwood-Bellis – 7/10 – A dominant performance from a player whose stock has risen rapidly in the past 12 months. His summer is most certainly not over here.

CB: Levi Colwill – 8/10 – Solid in the air and impressive with the ball at his feet. Another typical Colwill performance. Unfortunate with the penalty call.

LB: Max Aarons – 6/10 – An uncomfortable first half but Aarons made a major effort to get more involved in attack after the break and England looked better for it.

RM: Cole Palmer – 8/10 – He may not have been credited with the goal but Palmer’s performance merited a place on the scoresheet. The Man City midfielder was England’s danger man, playing some excellent passes and constantly roaring down the right side of the pitch.

CM: Angel Gomes – 6/10 – Given an early yellow card which impacted his defending. Not his most composed performance but that was always to be expected against a ball-hungry Spain outfit.

CM: Curtis Jones – 7/10 – A mixed performance. Guilty of some sloppy decisions but then flashed his quality against the Spanish press. Knew absolutely nothing about his goal.

LM: Emile Smith Rowe – 5/10 – Felt a little on the fringes for the majority of the game and was hooked midway through the second half after failing to figure out a way to get involved.

ST: Morgan Gibbs-White – 5/10 – A lively performance which wasn’t exactly bursting with quality. Sent off in the aftermath of the penalty despite not even being on the pitch.

ST: Anthony Gordon – 6/10 – Gordon made an astonishing start to the game but couldn’t maintain that level once Spain started to get going.

Oliver Skipp (73′ for Gomes) – 6/10

Cameron Archer (73′ for Gibbs-White) – 6/10

Harvey Elliott (82′ for Palmer) – N/A

Tommy Doyle (82′ for Gordon) – N/A

Subs not used: Griffiths, Rushworth, Thomas, Johnson, Branthwaite, Cresswell

Lee Carsley – 7/10 – Read the game well and made the necessary substitutions to earn the desired result. Knew when to call time on Smith Rowe and the decision to introduce Skipp was an intelligent one.

Spain U21s player ratings (4-2-3-1)

GK: Arnau Tenas – 7/10 – A solid showing from Tenas. Could do absolutely nothing about the opening goal but did well to stop Jones and Madueke from adding to the scoreline.

RB: Victor Gomez – 7/10 – Did a great job of stopping Smith Rowe from getting involved.

CB: Aitor Paredes – 6/10 – Put himself about in the air and came just inches away from heading his side in front.

CB: Jon Pacheco – 7/10 – Another top showing from Pacheco, whose early challenge on Gibbs-White was just as good as a goal.

LB: Juan Miranda – 6/10 – A bit of a scrappy one from Miranda, who didn’t always find it easy up against Palmer.

DM: Antonio Blanco – 6/10 – A really impressive performance at the base of Spain’s midfield. Played similar to Rodri and even tucked his shirt in as well. Sent off from the bench with the last act of the game.

DM: Alex Baena – 7/10 – Aggressive, occasionally to a fault, but Baena caused countless problems in midfield.

RM: Rodri – 6/10 – Nowhere near his best after an impressive individual tournament.

AM: Oihan Sancet – 7/10 – Excellent movement and passing to try and pick England apart. Unfortunate not to see more success. Surprisingly hooked on the hour mark.

LM: Sergio Gomez – 7/10 – Another impressive attacking display from Gomez, who has undoubtedly sent a message to Pep Guardiola this summer.

ST: Abel Ruiz – 6/10 – England did a great job of limiting Ruiz’s involvement but the Braga striker still had his dangerous moments. No idea how he didn’t score at least once.

Aimar Oroz (59′ for Baena) – 6/10

Rodrigo Riquelme (59′ for Rodri) – 7/10

Ander Barrenetxea (73′ for V. Gomez) – 6/10

Sergio Camello (83′ for Blanco) – N/A

Subs not used: Agirrezabala, Roman, Gila, Sanchez, Guillamon, Martinez, Bernabe

Santi Denia – 6/10 – A few questionable substitutions and perhaps left it a little too long to make any significant changes, but Spain can definitely consider themselves unlucky not to get the win here.

Player of the match – Levi Colwill (England)
