Reparations supporters in San Francisco are urging supervisors to adopt the recommendations made by a city-appointed committee for how the city should repay its Black residents who are descendants of slavery.

According to AP, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors was slated to vote Tuesday on the final reparations plan issued by the city’s African American Reparations Advisory Committee. Four million has been set aside by the city to open an office of reparations, but major recommendations have yet to be met or acted upon.

One of those major recommendations includes proposed $5 million payouts to eligible Black adults with a guaranteed annual income of at least $97,000 for 250 years. The committee also proposed the elimination of personal debt and homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family.

On Tuesday, hundreds of residents rallied outside City Hall demanding that the city begin to roll out reparations recommendations and start addressing disparities for the Black residents of San Francisco.

“The bill is due and the city needs to just do it,” advisory committee member Rev. Amos C. Brown told AP.

The committee’s recommendations include helping Black families own homes, supplementing household incomes and the creation of a historically Black university. Advocates say Black people are owed for unpaid labor, property taken through eminent domain and policies that denied them mortgages and access to education.

During a hearing in March with the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the committee discussed more than 100 recommendations, many of which were passionately supported by the board.

Although San Francisco is a fairly liberal city, the plan to give descendants of slaves reparations has been met with an abundance of pushback.

Stanford University’s Hoover Institution has estimated that a big idea like this would cost every non-Black family in the city at least $600,000. Others claim the city can not afford reparations payments, citing the tech industry downturn as the reason the city doesn’t have the funds. Others have also stated that since San Francisco wasn’t a city that had slaves, Black residents shouldn’t be eligible for reparations.

But some supervisors on the committee, although surprised by their colleagues’ ignorance, say racist policies continue to keep Black Americans down.

“Those of my constituents who lost their minds about this proposal, it’s not something we’re doing or we would do for other people. It’s something we would do for our future, for everybody’s collective future,” Supervisor Rafael Mandelman told ABC News.

Even though many of the reparations recommendations were supported by the board, it doesn’t mean they will be adopted. Each recommendation will be voted on and can be approved or rejected. A final report is expected to be released in June.

The San Francisco reparations plan will set the stage for how reparations could be handled at the federal level.

“I don’t need to impress upon you the fact that we are setting a national precedent here in San Francisco,” said Tinisch Hollins, Vice chair of the African American Reparations Advisory Committee. “What we are asking for and what we’re demanding for is a real commitment to what we need to move things forward.”

Currently, California is pushing the topic into the spotlight with its state-backed reparations task force committee.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation to begin a two-year exploration and hopefully a solid plan on what reparations might look like for Black Americans living in the Golden State. The initiative was also designed to reflect on slavery’s harsh past and its current effect on Black Americans living in the United States. Committee members are expected to deliver a final reparations proposal by July 2023.

Charity celebrates success of scholarship graduates

Three young people have successfully graduated from one of Raleigh Bermuda’s scholarship programmes.

Established in 2004, Raleigh International Bermuda teaches young people various skills and self-confidence outside a traditional class or workplace setting.

Yeshai Burgess, Zyire Gomes and Sianon Thomas completed the charity’s venturers’ scholarship programme, which offers 17 to 24-year-olds personal coaching and the chance to participate in a ten-week survival journey overseas.

A charity spokeswoman said: “After completing the local training camps, our venturers are then sent overseas for ten weeks to continue their advanced survival training – an expedition in the remote jungles, mountain and rivers of Costa Rica and working with the indigenous communities by helping to build schools, irrigation systems, engaging in environmental projects and trekking for several weeks through the jungles.”

After graduating from the year-long programme, alumni can become project managers, mentors, coaches or board members within the charity.

Dany Rodriguez, Raleigh’s executive director, said: “The three final graduates we witness today succeeded in completing their advanced local training camps and their overseas expedition.

“Today we also celebrate our 2023 Raleigh graduates and the rite of passage and acknowledgement of our young Bermudians stepping into manhood and womanhood – I am extremely proud of all of them.”

Mr Burgess also received the Malcolm K Outerbridge Transformation award, given to the participant who showed the greatest transformation within the programme.

He also earned the Michael J Spurling “Raleigh Champion” award, given to an outstanding organisation volunteer and advocate.

Ajahni Roberts-Smith, who won the award last year, handed Mr Burgess this prize.

He was given these awards at Deloitte’s Hamilton headquarters last week.

Ms Rodriguez said: “Congratulations Yeshai, we are deeply proud of you, and we hope the award will help you transition into the next phase of your young adult life; whether it be with education advancement, skill development or support in your life’s journey.”

Graduates were not the only ones recognised at the event – Milvin DeRosa was crowned alumni of the year for his commitment to the charity and Nicole Warren won parent of the year.

Programme co-ordinator Keri Pacheco received a special thank you from the organisation for helping the venturers succeed in their journey.

Los Angeles, CA (August 2023) – Craft Latino is thrilled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of Latin music’s most beloved Christmas albums, Asalto Navideño, Vol. II. Led by the inimitable duo of Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe, with the addition of cuatro master Yomo Toro, this classic salsa title includes such festive favorites as “La Banda,” “Doña Santos,” and “Cantemos.” In stores on September 29 and available for pre-orderAsalto Navideño, Vol. II features lacquers cut from the original master tapes (AAA) by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and is pressed on 180-gram vinyl. The LP is housed in a tip-on jacket, while the original jacket art (featuring Toro as Santa Claus) highlights the musicians’ playful personas. Fans can also find Asalto Navideño Vol. II i192/24 hi-res audio on select digital platforms. Asalto Navideño, which literally translates to “Christmas Assault” is named for the Puerto Rican Christmas tradition (also known as a parranda). Similar to the act of caroling, revelers visit their friends and families, singing (typically secular) songs and enjoying refreshments late into the night. In 1971, three leading Puerto Rican-American musicians (bandleader and trombonist Willie Colón, singer Héctor “El Cantante” Lavoe, and “King of the Cuatro” Yomo Toro) banded together to record their own parranda. The resulting album, which marked the first volume of Asalto Navideño, became a best-seller in the US and Puerto Rico.

As salsa reached its height in New York, fans could not get enough. And so, in 1973, the three musicians reunited with percussionists Milton Cardona and José Mangual Jr. to record even more holiday magic. As with the first edition of Asalto Navideño, Colón (who also served as producer and arranger) selected eight traditional Puerto Rican country songs (música jíbara) and reimagined them in the salsa tradition, blending them with an array of Afro-Caribbean rhythms (from Cuban guaguancó to Brazilian samba).

Throughout Vol. II is an air of spirited celebration, as the banda toasts to Christmas, Three Kings Day, and New Year’s Day, while pledging solidarity with their fellow Latin Americans – particularly in songs like “Cantemos” and “Pa’ Los Pueblos.” Mirroring an actual asalto Navideño, the album opens with “Pescao,” in which the trio announces the parranda. The song is a particularly strong example of the jíbaro tradition, as is the following track, “Recomendación.” The latter selection also showcases the fierce interplay between Colón and Toro, which can be heard throughout the album.

The biggest highlights of the album, however, are two of the trio’s most enduring and joyful favorites: “La Banda” and “Doña Santos.” Translating to “the group” or “the gang,” “La Banda” begins with an upbeat piano montuno before the beat kicks in and Lavoe launches into his famous improvisations. “Doña Santos” continues the party, as the sonero sings about craving roast pig (a traditional menu item at Puerto Rican Christmas gatherings). The song climaxes in another fantastic trombone-cuatro jam by Colón and Toro.

In addition to these memorable songs, what made both records so special was the talent involved. At the time, Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe were among Latin music’s most formidable duos – and pioneers of the salsa sound. Both artists were teenagers when they began working together under Fania Records. There, they would release a string of best-selling albums, including 1967’s El Malo1970’s Cosa Nuestraand 1973’s Lo Mato. Not long after the second Asalto Navideño odropped, however, Colón and Lavoe would each embark on exciting new phases of their careers. While Colón would hone his talents behind the scenes, Lavoe, who was revered for his bright vocals, seamless phrasing, and ad-libbed anecdotes, was ready to break out on his own as one of the great interpreters of salsa music.

Yomo Toro, meanwhile, was a well-known entertainer in New York City, where he hosted a popular Spanish-language TV show. At the time, he also had regular gigs performing with the celebrated Mexican bolero groups Trio Los Panchos and Los Rivereños, but his work on both Asalto Navideño ralbums would make him an international star. In addition to becoming a mainstay in the salsa scene and performing with the Fania All-Stars, Toro became a hot commodity in the industry, eventually appearing on more than 150 albums by the likes of Paul Simon, Linda Ronstadt, and David Byrne.

The impact of Asalto Navideño Vols. I & II cannot be understated. Filtering the classic songs of their youth through a modern, New York City lens, Colón, Lavoe, and Toro paid homage to their Puerto Rican roots, while creating new musical traditions. Today, both Asalto Navideño mvolumes rank among the top salsa albums of all time, while they remain Christmas staples in Latin American households, passed down from one generation to another.
