Bernadine Strik, a leading U.S. berry authority, has died. Strik, 60, died on April 14 in Corvallis, Oregon.

Strik, a veteran Oregon State University professor of horticulture and Extension berry crop specialist and researcher, was well-known and respected in the berry world.

As an extension specialist, growers repeatedly participated in her field days and her online “blueberry schools” to gain the latest trends and knowledge.

In her time at OSU, Oregon blueberry acreage expanded from 1,200 acres to 15,000 acres with large changes in production systems based on her research. Her landmark 14-year project on organic blueberry production helped drive an increase in Oregon organic acreage as growers adopted Strik’s research-based production methods to increase their profitability, according to OSU.

Retiring in 2021, Strik that year was honored by the highest honor bestowed by the International Society of Horticultural Science for her innovative and industry-changing program on berries.

Born in Holland, Strik’s family moved to Australia and later, Canada, where she earned a doctorate with distinction in horticulture at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, at 25 years of age. At OSU, she started as an assistant professor in 1987 and was promoted to professor in 1997. Strik’s paternal grandfather was a vegetable and strawberry grower in west Holland while her maternal grandfather spent sold produce at his specialty stores. Her parents followed similarly.

Strik is survived by husband Neil Bell, a retired OSU Extension horticulture specialist, and two daughters.

“My condolences to Bernadine’s family,” said Kevin Schooley, executive director of the North American Strawberry Growers Association, based in Welland, Ontario. “Bernadine was so well respected by her friends in the agricultural community and will be sorely missed. She was always willing to share her knowledge and expertise and was fun to be around. We had some great conversations about farming and family. We will all cherish the time we had together and the special memories.”

The Biden administration also said, starting Oct. 1, it will accelerate work authorization process times for immigrants who arrived in the United States through other bureaucratic avenues. That includes those who seek asylum through a mobile app for appointments at the southern border with Mexico — called CBP One — while they are in Central America or Mexico. Additionally Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans in their home countries who seek humanitarian parole, another immigration protection, could see expedited work permit times dropping from 90 days to 30.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Robin Nice, New England Chapter chair for the American Immigration Lawyers Association. “Really, it’s oftentimes an instance of stealing from Peter to pay Paul where … I get some work permit applications or renewals approved within seven days, and then I have other ones waiting eight months.”

“We still have people who applied for TPS last year and still have not seen their work authorization. So it varies between anything from two years all the way to probably six months,” she said.

Despite not knowing how long work permits will take, Gabeau welcomes the change announced Wednesday as “one of the biggest news of the year” — as long as it is implemented correctly. She said extending Haiti’s designation for Temporary Protected Status is also something that needs to happen.

State Sen. Marc Pacheco, dean of the Massachusetts Senate, thinks that work authorization needs to be more “immediate” for migrants, citing staffing shortages around the state. He held a press conference and released a letter to Congress and the Biden administration from himself and 64 other state legislators on the issue.

“Comprehensive immigration reform is urgently needed to address domestic workforce shortages and establish a functional system for processing entrants to the United States,” the letter said.

The bribery charges are not the first criminal allegations that Galvan has faced.

In 2021, he was investigated for election rigging following a Compton City Council runoff election between him and Andre Spicer.

Galvan won the election by a single vote, but four of the votes that had been cast for Galvan were disqualified after a judge found that the ballots had been submitted by people who did not live in the contested council district.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office charged Galvan and six others with conspiracy to commit election fraud. Galvan pleaded not guilty, and the case is ongoing.

According to the district attorney’s office, Galvan conspired with one of his opponents in the primary election, Jace Dawson, to send voters who lived outside the council district to vote for Galvan.

Spicer was awarded the council seat in 2022. Galvan also faced a $240,000 fine for campaign finance violations.
