Liverpool want to sign 19-year-old who’s just lit up U20 World Cup, he’ll only cost £2.5m – journalist
Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in signing Gambian U20 forward Adama Bojang.
Bojang made a splash at the recent U20 World Cup, bagging a brace in Gambia’s first game of the tournament against Honduras. Although he didn’t score in the remaining three games, he helped his nation to a surprise win over France, too.
According to journalist Ed Aarons, those displays in Argentina have caught the attention of clubs across Europe. Posting on Twitter yesterday, Aarons named Liverpool as one of those to have been impressed.
“Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Chelsea among several clubs interested in Gambia striker Adama Bojang, who scored twice at the Under-20 World Cup,” wrote the journalist.
“Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolves and RB Leipzig also tracking the 19-year-old, who will cost around €3m [£2.5m] from Steve Biko FC in Gambia.”
Liverpool interested in Bojang
We can’t claim to know much at all about Bojang. But judging by the number of top clubs in the running for him, he must have something a bit special.
From Liverpool’s point of view, this doesn’t tend to be the kind of signing they make any longer.
At one time, it was relatively common that the Reds would bring in highly-rated young players from across the globe. The names of Gerardo Bruna, Dani Pacheco and Andras Simon will mean nothing to many, but certain Reds fans will remember them less than fondly.
Since Jurgen Klopp took charge at Anfield though, these signings have become much less common. Whether that’s as a result of Brexit is a possibility. It’s certainly true that Liverpool are now much more likely to target home-grown gems like Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak.
But why shouldn’t they be in for the likes of Bojang? Young players with burgeoning reputations who tear it up on the big stage.
Perhaps they feel it’s better to let these youngsters develop and play elsewhere. Liverpool isn’t exactly the easiest place to get game time at. So maybe that’s fair enough.
Sometimes though, you have to take a punt. For £2.5m the Reds really wouldn’t have a lot to lose, but a whole lot to gain. If they don’t snap Bojang up, it looks certain that somebody else will.
