Meta employees express feelings regarding lay-offs

Former Meta employees who lost their jobs due to the tech giant’s recent firing spree are sharing their experiences of receiving the devastating news on social media.
“Today is a strange day,” remarked former Meta program manager Dylan Pacheco.
Mark Zuckerberg released a statement on Wednesday saying that 11% of the company’s workers, or 11,000 individuals, were being let go. The CEO accepted responsibility for the company’s poor performance, stating that he “got this wrong.”
Apologizing to the laid-off workers, he explained that layoffs were “the final resort” to salvage the company. He said that most of the recruiting crew had been fired due to the company’s employment freeze.
A worker from India, who had joined Meta just two days before his dismissal, was stunned to see the email on Wednesday. Himanshu V had relocated to Canada for a new job, but he was instructed to depart.
“Two days after relocating to Canada to join #Meta, my trip ended due to the major layoff. “My heart goes out to everyone experiencing a difficult situation right now,” he said in a LinkedIn post, explaining that he, like many recently laid-off, was concerned about his future.
“Please let me know if you know of any openings for a software developer in Canada or India,” he added.
Brianna Sgro, a former recruiter for Meta, stated that she was “sad, uncertain, and now unemployed.”
She stated she was thrilled to join the company she had “always wanted to work for” when she joined last year.
“I used to fantasize on my commute, ‘Wow, what if I ever had the opportunity to work at Facebook or Google?’ It felt like an unattainable fantasy,” Sgro writes. Even though all of these things end today, I am grateful to have experienced them.
Despite the layoff, many other employees praised Meta for the experience, as did Sgro. For several, this was their first experience with a widespread layoff.
“I was laid off at Meta today. I never dreamed that my time at a workplace where I felt comfortable and finally at home would end this way. After receiving a promotion and advancing my career internally, I never considered quitting. Cai Mailhes, an ex-recruiter, wrote that his teammates were the brightest and most talented individuals available.
Not every response was positive. People described how they were impacted. Former technical recruiter Nathan Magner stated, “Finding informed you were laid off by email stinks.”
“No warning, and I was informed lately by a team head that the team I worked on had a high priority and would not be affected,” stated a third employee.
A communications director on maternity leave reported receiving the email around 5 a.m. when she awoke to feed her three-month-old daughter.
Anneka Patel, a woman of Indian descent, wrote on LinkedIn, “My heart fell.”
She said, “People would ask whether it was difficult to work there with all the negative news, but I would tell them I was fortunate because I got to convey the good stories about the amazing Facebook groups out there and the work these community leaders are doing to help alter the lives of others.”
A couple working as technical recruiters at the company expressed their anger, stating that they had only recently returned from maternity leave.
The posts indicate that Meta has terminated employees from the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Ghana, and India. Mark stated that recruiters were the most affected group, but product designers, marketing department employees, engineers, and those at Meta’s Reality Labs were all significantly impacted.
