Oliveira attacked the legs of Madrigal with hard kicks to start the fight, prompting a takedown attempt from his opponent. Oliveira was intent on throwing absolute heaters, and he tagged Madrigal with a stiff uppercut just over a minute in. Madrigal displayed good composure, but Oliveira showed no hesitation in continuing to push with all the strikes in his arsenal. He loaded up with an absolutely savage left hook that immediately shut the lights off on Madrigal and left him stiff on the canvas.

Jets vs. Chiefs score, takeaways: Patrick Mahomes outlasts Zach Wilson in topsy-turvy AFC showdown – CBSSports.com

The Kansas City Chiefs moved to 3-1 on Sunday night, as they defeated the New York Jets in East Rutherford, 23-20. As the calendar turned to the month of October, we certainly saw some spooky elements in this one. For the majority of the matchup, it looked like Patrick Mahomes and Zach Wilson actually switched places. One looked like a top quarterback, while the other looked like a struggling young player.

The headline from Sunday night was the play of Wilson, who had arguably the best outing of his young career. He completed 28 of 39 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. His 28 completions marked a career best, and his two passing touchdowns tied his career high. Wilson’s 105.2 passer rating also marked a career best. He made tough throws and orchestrated long drives — he was truly a different quarterback compared to the guy we have been watching over the past couple years. Is this a sign of things to come? Only time will tell.

Mahomes on the other hand completed 18 of 30 passes for 203 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Travis Kelce was again his favorite target, as he caught six passes for 60 yards. Isiah Pacheco had a monster night back in his home state, rushing for 115 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. And Chiefs coach Andy Reid earned his 250th regular-season victory, tying Tom Landry for fourth on the all-time list.

This was a physical affair that came down to the very end. Kansas City has now won three straight games, while New York has lost three straight games. Let’s take a look at what went down in New Jersey on Sunday night.

Why the Chiefs won

This game did not go the way many believed it would. Well, it actually did at first. In the opening quarter, it looked like the Chiefs were preparing to coast to a blowout victory as Taylor Swift received plenty of airtime. Without a doubt, the Chiefs’ quick start was pivotal in this win.

Kansas City wanted to turn this into a track meet, and scored a total of 17 points on its first three possessions. The Chiefs racked up over 200 yards of total offense in the first 15 minutes, while the Jets sputtered out of the gate. If Kansas City didn’t secure that 17-0 lead before Mahomes’ ugly interceptions and Wilson’s impressive tosses, we would be talking about something entirely different.

How Mahomes and the Chiefs handled the fourth quarter is absolutely noteworthy. This squad has more experience when it comes to gutting out victories, but the dominant first quarter was just as important.

Why the Jets lost and turning point

The Jets defense forced an ugly game from Mahomes and Wilson had an absolutely incredible outing, but a fourth-quarter fumble with 7:24 remaining in the game turned into a 15-play, 45-yard drive that was both the turning point in this matchup, and the reason the Jets lost.

Down three points with possession at midfield, it looked like the Jets were on their way to potentially securing their first lead of the game. However, that’s when disaster struck.

The Chiefs then took over with plenty of time to burn, and honestly, this entire drive was the “turning point.” There were several plays that went Kansas City’s way, and helped the Chiefs secure the victory.

It was certainly one of the more interesting possessions you’ll see with the game in the balance. Early on, Mahomes converted a third-and-13 with his legs, only to have the play called back due to a Jawaan Taylor holding call. Then, on the ensuing third-and-long, Mahomes again relied on his legs to move the sticks — running right up the middle for a gain of 25 yards while the Jets defense was nowhere to be found.

On a third-and-20 moments later, Mahomes was picked off by Michael Carter, but Sauce Gardner was flagged for defensive holding. It certainly was a controversial call that caused Robert Saleh to lay into the officials.

With a fresh set of downs, the Chiefs continued on their mission to run out the clock. At the end, it was again Mahomes with his legs that officially sealed the deal. This play was the third third down Kansas City converted on the game-clinching possession.

Play of the game

After outdueling Mahomes in the first half, you had to wonder if Wilson could maintain this level of play for the rest of the night. The Jets got the ball to start the second half, and the former No. 2 overall pick led a seven-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a 10-yard Allen Lazard touchdown.

This was a very impressive toss from Wilson.

The Chiefs will be on the road again next week, as they travel to Minnesota to take on the 1-3 Vikings. As for the Jets, they travel to Denver for a date with the 1-3 Broncos.

Zach Wilson apologizes for Jets loss after nearly ruining Taylor Swift and Chiefs’ party – “I cannot do that”

In a normal world, Sunday’s clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Jets would be just another ordinary game.

On one side were the reigning Super Bowl champions, slowly but surely regaining their footing after a stunning home loss against the Detroit Lions to open their season. On the other, the joint holder of North America’s longest postseason drought, whose chances were quite literally snapped when their star acquisition Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon.

But alas, this was no ordinary game for one major reason: Taylor Swift. The internationally acclaimed pop star was in attendance at MetLife Stadium to cheer on her rumored new boyfriend Travis Kelce, and fortunately for her, the Chiefs won 23-20.

Zach Wilson almost won Jets Sunday night game vs. Chiefs, apologizes for crucial fumbled snap

But at a certain point, the game could have gone differently. After the Chiefs took a commanding 17-0 lead to end the first quarter, the Jets went on a monstrous 20-3 run in the next two, highlighted by this touchdown pass by Zach Wilson to Allen Lazard and subsequent quarterback 2-pt rush that tied the game:

However, Harrison Butker broke the stalemate with a 26-yard field goal in the fourth. Then, sometime later, Wilson botched a snap that was collected by defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton:

That proved to be the difference, as the 2021 second-overall pick admitted in the post-game presser:

Still, he delivered arguably his best performance of the season so far – two touchdowns against no interceptions – amidst rumblings that he was playing for his job.

By contrast, Patrick Mahomes had one of his worst outings – one score (to backup tight end Noah Gray) against two picks. But Isiah Pacheco outrushed everyone, tallying 115 yards and a touchdown on 20 touches, while Butker was perfect on his kicks (3 FGs and 2 PATs), ensuring that their team would remain unbeaten when Taylor Swift is fieldside.

Arajet enters Canada’s crowded budget airline market

Arajet, a discount airline based in the Dominican Republic, says it will launch flights between that country and Toronto and Montreal this fall.

Article content

The announcement by the year-old carrier marks the latest entrant to an already crowded field of low-cost airlines, and comes two weeks after U.S. budget carrier Breeze Airways made a pitch to Quebecers bound for Florida.

Unlike many low-price players, Arajet chief executive Victor Pacheco says his will bank on a hub-and-spoke model that connects passengers from far-flung airports via the airline’s hub of Santo Domingo, his home country’s capital.

As proof, he says well over half of the 10,000-plus Arajet tickets sold to Canadians so far are for other destinations in the Caribbean and Central and South America, to be reached via connecting flights from the Dominican Republic.

Though no other airlines fly direct between that country and Canada, Air Canada, United Airlines and American Airlines all touch down there regularly, while rapidly expanding discount carriers such as Flair Airlines and Lynx Air try to woo Canadians with cheap flights to an array of sunny destinations.

Backed by majority investor Bain Capital, the 10-aircraft Arajet will launch direct routes to Santo Domingo from Toronto and Montreal on Oct. 24 and Nov. 7, respectively, with one-way trips starting at $98.

Canadian home prices are too rich for higher interest rates, Paul Beaudry says

Current home prices in Canada can’t be justified if medium-term interest rates stay elevated, a former Bank of Canada official said, underscoring the risk to one of the country’s most important sectors.

Paul Beaudry, who spent four years on the central bank’s rate-setting committee, said the outlook for the housing market remains highly dependent not only on the policy rate, but on longer-term fixed rates. If they don’t come down, “then it becomes much more difficult to support these valuations,” he said on BNN Bloomberg Television.

The benchmark price of a home in Canada was $757,600 in August, up 40 per cent in five years — with most parts of Ontario and Quebec seeing much larger price increases. Canadian homeowners, unlike their U.S. counterparts, don’t have the option of locking in rates for 30 years. Most borrowers have rates that are fixed for five years or fewer, or they have floating-rate mortgages that rise and fall with the Bank of Canada rate.

That has left many households stretched after rates jumped in the past 18 months. The five-year Canada government bond yield has risen nearly 150 basis points since hitting its 2023 low in March, putting significant upward pressure on mortgage rates. Royal Bank of Canada economists wrote last week the overall cost of home ownership in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and other cities is “still near all-time worst levels.”

The company says subway riders will be able to connect to its 5G network while in the Line 1 stations and tunnels in the so-called Downtown U from Union Station north to St. George and Bloor-Yonge, plus Spadina and Dupont stations. The area encompasses all of the subway stops in Toronto’s downtown core.

The federal government had set a deadline of Tuesday for all passengers on the TTC subway system to have cellular connectivity, regardless of their carrier. It has also set a Dec. 20 deadline for the companies to negotiate commercial agreements to provide service on the subway over the long term.

Llewellyn, the first woman to lead a major Canadian bank, departs after the Montreal-based lender concluded a review of strategic options without a sale. In September, it said it would try to ramp up its current strategy, which includes growth in commercial lending and technology upgrades.

“Eric is the right executive to lead the bank at this critical point in its evolution,” said Michael Boychuk, who was appointed chair of the board as Michael Mueller resigned. “We have experienced challenges recently and the board is confident that Eric will successfully focus the organization on our customer experience and operational effectiveness.”

Opinion: Struggles between Gustavo Petro and Colombia’s media stir Latin American populism

In this turbulent time in Latin America, when the winds of populism and authoritarianism blow strongly from north to south, it is increasingly urgent to strengthen the intrinsic values of democracy. In the current maelstrom, when both left-wing and right-wing regional governments are cracking down on media freedom, it is mandatory to ask whether we can reverse this regional trend.

A few weeks ago I traveled to Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, as part of an exchange program promoted by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), based in Washington, D.C. On this study trip I visited different media outlets—both traditional and alternative—which allowed me to learn about the work they do and the challenges they face.

In Latin America, press freedom is suffering a progressive collapse. Just look at the recent report from the Paris-based organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF). In 2023, according to RSF, only a handful of Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, Argentina, Belize, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic, rank among the top 52 nations where the press is not operating under significant restrictions and attacks.

In nations where democracy is eroding, the actors who control the state impose their self-serving narratives. And journalists who challenge these narratives, who investigate and critically scrutinize the government’s actions, are considered enemies, as Donald Trump has demonized the U.S. mainstream media.

This type of hostile environment caused 93 Nicaraguan journalists to go into exile in 2022 alone, and a total of 178 since 2018. Thirteen Guatemalan journalists have followed the same path; the esteemed journalist and director of the independent newspaper El Periódico, José Rubén Zamora, was sentenced earlier this year to six years in prison for alleged money laundering charges that he denied and human rights groups denounced as fraudulent. Since its creation in 1996, this medium had exposed widespread corruption in Guatemala. Its last digital edition was May 15.

“Journalists live in a permanent state of threats and intimidation,” Guatemalan journalist Julia Corado told an international media outlet.

During the mandate of Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, it has been reported that more than 10 journalists have gone into exile. In 2022, 125 attacks occurred against Salvadoran reporters, while a community journalist was imprisoned for 11 months, accused of illicit associations, a detention that occurred within the framework of the “emergency” regime that Bukele implemented in March 2022. Those measures have resulted in what human rights groups say are arbitrary arrests and human rights violations. More than 70,000 Salvadorans have been detained and imprisoned, including many innocent people, allegedly for being gang members.

In 2022, 13 Mexican and 7 Haitian journalists were murdered, making them the most dangerous nations to practice journalism, according to monitoring carried out by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), based in New York.

In Colombia, I was told during my visit, the media confront opposing realities. In the nation’s capital there is virtually no censorship or threats against the media.

“Here, the press is strong, we have very good journalists in all media. The press imposes its agenda,” Daniel Pacheco, general editor of the digital news site La Silla Vacía, bluntly told me while discussing the oppressive conditions in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

However, Colombia’s regional media outlets face many pressures, according to the Foundation for Freedom of the Press (FLIP), based in Bogotá. In the last four years, FLIP has documented an annual average of 200 threats against journalists, a number that has been increasing steadily. In 2022, there were 218 threats, eight cases of journalists being forced into exile, 20 physical attacks, 84 incidents of harassment and two murders of journalists, which occurred in the provinces of Córdoba and Nariño.

What is happening inside Colombian territory is alarming, amid rising tensions between the left-wing President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, and the national media. Nicolás Petro, son of the Colombian president, was arrested on July 29 and charged with money laundering and illicit enrichment, charges that he denies. His ex-wife, Daysuris Vásquez, also was arrested. The Colombian Attorney General’s Office investigated the case after Vásquez accused Nicolás, in an interview with a magazine, of receiving 1,000 million pesos ($250,000) for his father’s presidential campaign that were not reported. Colombian media have reported that the funds allegedly they came from the former drug trafficker Santander Lopesierra and businessman Alfonso Hilsaca, who has allegedly financed illegal groups and has been imprisoned on two occasions.

Two weeks later, a media outlet reported that a drug trafficker organized a celebration to support Petro’s candidacy. The president described this investigation, documented by journalist Ricardo Calderón, as “slanderous” and “false information” in messages that he published on the social network X, formerly called Twitter. Calderón is a seasoned investigative journalist who in the last 25 years has revealed high-profile cases such as illegal police eavesdropping under the Álvaro Uribe administration. He also reported on the privileges of the military in the Tolemaida detention center during the mandate of Juan Manuel Santos, to name a few.

At least some Colombians approve of the media’s aggressive coverage. “It’s good what the media does, thanks to journalistic work they arrested Petro’s son,” a woman told me on a cool afternoon in the north of Bogotá.

Before assuming power, on August 7, 2022, Petro began to use Twitter very actively to make announcements and issue positions on current issues in Colombia. But, as president he has used the social platform to question the press. In January 2023 alone he made about 34 references to nine differnt media outlets.

“The frequency with which the president disputes the press suggests a strategy to position his narrative and his agenda on networks. Likewise, he intends to sow doubt before the audience about the suitability of the media to do their job,” FLIP lamented.

Pedro Viveros, a political analyst and columnist for the newspaper El Espectador, said that Petro’s behavior corresponds to that of a populist leader.

“When a politician is populist, the first thing he does is mess with the media, that is the way they guarantee an audience. If the president fights with the media, his political group, his mass of followers, will end up following him, which is almost half of the country,” Viveros said in an interview with local media.

Abelardo Gómez, a university professor and general editor of the news portal La Cola de Rata, an independent digital media website dedicated since 2011 to regional investigations, said that this clash between the president and the press is a fight that “will leave many victims.” At the same time, he points out that the Colombian media that are investigating the president are those that traditionally have represented the interests of the wealthiest economic groups.

“Why now and not five years ago? Because he is a left-wing president and he is openly questioning the economic powers that are the true powers in Colombia?” Gómez told me in an phone interview. “Petro is opposing the traditional powers.”

The dispute is both harming press freedom and diminishing the president.

Automated social media accounts also are being used to attack the Colombian media, deployig publications that appear to be coordinated with the government’s coalition of political parties. During the week of August 13-21, hashtags such as #CaracolMiente, #SemanaMiente, #ElCololombianoMiente, #RCNMiente and #ElTiempoMiente were trending on X, Tik Tok, Instagram and VK (Russian Facebook). Those tags were mentioned 3.1 million times during that period, according to tracking.

Political attacks on the media dovetail with a strategy to spread false information, says Raúl Hinojosa, a UCLA professor of political science. Donald Trump and other populist leaders have used that strategy to condition supporters to accept whatever narratives they are told.

“Populist leaders try to break critical dialogue,” Hinojosa said. “We cannot forget that Trump invented the concept of ‘fake news’ and he did it knowing that he is the main liar.”

As misinformation spreads and the cult of leaders increases, one consequence is that citizens become less interested in democracy. In Latin America, according to the latest Latinobarómetro report, only 48% of the population supports democracy, a reduction of 15% compared to 2010 when support for democracy was 63%.

“It is very difficult to have a society with a healthy democracy if that society does not enjoy freedom of the press,” says Carolina Jiménez, director of the Washington Office on Latin American Affairs (WOLA). “I would love to see the presidents of Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela talking about the importance of the press operating in an environment free of violence and with all guarantees.”

That aspiration is transcendental. In the current regional context, it is urgent that democracy be strengthened to not allow incubators to be created where populist apprentices are nurtured.

And more than ever, journalists are needed to monitor power. As Javier Darío Restrepo, who was a teacher in journalistic ethics at the Gabo Foundation, founded by the Colombian Nobel Prize-winning author and journalist Gabriel García Márquez, says, “It is the duty of the journalist to protect his readers or recipients from the deception of power.”

UFC news: Meet the 25 fighters signed in September 2023

Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of the hustle and bustle of the mixed martial arts news beat, but here at MMA Junkie, we’ve got you covered.

“Fresh Ink” is your list of fighters added to the UFC roster the previous month and provides background on who they are and where they came from.

Check out the September 2023 list below.

Dione Barbosa

Record when signed: 6-2
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Flyweight
Age: 31
Debut: TBA

A training partner of Bellator women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, Dione Barbosa took a DWCS opportunity on days’ notice. When the time came, she passed the test with flying colors with a slick armbar submission of Rainn Guerrero. The victory was her third career submission and extended her winning streak to three.

Danny Barlow

Danny Barlow def. Raheam Forest DWCS 64

Record when signed: 7-0
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Welterweight
Age: 28

Danny Barlow put on for Memphis in short order as he capitalized on his DWCS moment, finished Raheam Forest, and notched a UFC deal. Barlow came out swinging and put on an exciting showing for as long as it lasted, which excited UFC CEO Dana White. A CFFC product, Barlow has four knockouts/TKOs, two submissions, and one decision on his resume to date.

Dylan Budka

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – SEPTEMBER 05: Dylan Budka reacts after his victory over Chad Hanekom of South Africa in a middleweight fight during Dana White’s Contender Series season seven, week five at UFC APEX on September 05, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

Record when signed: 7-2
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Middleweight
Age: 23
Debut: TBA

Dylan Budka didn’t have the most entertaining fight on DWCS. In fact, he probably had one of the least, in many people’s opinions, including UFC president Dana White. However, because Budka took the fight on very short notice, White gave him a pass and a UFC contract. Budka has competed as high as heavyweight, but White hopes to see him at welterweight going forward. Budka is a former LFA title challenger with three finishes in seven wins.

Charlie Campbell

Signing type: Short notice
Weight class: Lightweight
Age: 28
Debut: Sept. 16 def. Alex Reyes (13-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) via TKO – Round 1, at Noche UFC in Las Vegas

Highly praised by his teammates at Longo Weidman MMA, Charlie Campbell was milliseconds away from earning a UFC contract in 2022. As he battered Chris Duncan around the cage on DWCS, he was on the receiving end of one of the craziest comebacks in mainstream MMA history. After months away from action, Campbell returned and picked up a first-round knockout for CFFC. His body of work on the regional scene as a whole was enough for matchmaker Sean Shelby to give Campbell a call for a short notice opportunity.

Igor da Silva

Record when signed: 8-0
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Flyweight
Age: 20
Debut: TBA

Igor da Silva punched his ticket to the UFC, as many fighters do during the late summer-early fall months, through Dana White’s Contender Series. A second-round TKO of Jhonata Silva did the trick. The win maintained his 100 percent finishing rate through eight fights that include an even split of four knockouts and four submissions. Oh, and he’s only 20. Da Silva was the Jungle Fight flyweight champ prior to his appearance, too.

Jhonata Diniz

Record when signed: 6-0
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Heavyweight
Age: 32
Debut: TBA

Another member of the massive influx of kickboxers crossing over into MMA, Jhonata Dinizshowed off his power punching with a one-punch walk-off knockout of Eduardo Neves on Dana White’s Contender Series. The win earned him a UFC deal and maintained his 100 percent knockout/TKO rate in MMA. His kickboxing record sits at 22-7.

Kaue Fernandes

Record when signed: 8-1
Signing type: Straight up
Weight class: Lightweight
Age: 28
Debut: TBA

The next in a long lineage of Andre Pederneras fighters to enter the UFC, Kaue Fernandes enters the promotion off back-to-back wins in LFA. Both were kick finishes – one was to the body and one was to the head. Six of his eight pro wins have come inside the distance with four knockouts/TKOs and two submissions.

Shamil Gaziev

Shamil Gaziev def. Greg Velasco | DWCS 63

Record when signed: 11-0
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Heavyweight
Age: 33
Debut: TBA

The UFC is always in need of heavyweights, but as we’ve seen throughout the years, promising ones are hard to come by. Shamil Gaziev is different, though. His potential appears to be untapped. For as short as his DWCS bout was, Gaziev showed off powerful striking, intelligent grappling, and the ability to persevere. A staple of BRAVE CF, Gaziev enters the UFC already having high-level experience – and 10 finishes in 11 fights. Now will he debut at UFC 295, as he asked? We shall see.

Carli Judice

Ernesta Kerackaite def. Carli Judice DWCS 64

Record when signed: 3-1
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Flyweight
Age: 24
Debut: TBA

Carli Judice’s DWCS appearance didn’t play out in an ideal fashion, but she certainly made the most of it. Judice took a fight vs. Ernesta Kareckaite on 10 days notice. The fight was just the fourth of her professional career and after a hard fought battle, she lost a close split decision. Her effort and willingness to step up didn’t go unrecognized, though, as UFC CEO Dana White awarded Judice a contract anyway. This made her only the second DWCS loser to earn an immediate contract in the series’ history.

Ernesta Kareckaite

Ernesta Kerackaite def. Carli Judice DWCS 64

Record when signed: 5-0-1
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Flyweight
Age: 25
Debut: TBA

For a fighter with only six professional fights on her resume, Ernesta Kareckaite sure has clocked a lot of cage time. She added another decision win to her resume when she took on Carli Judice in an entertaining UFC contract-earning performance on DWCS. Fighting out of Lithuania, Kareckaite was the Hexagone MMA flyweight champion prior to her UFC signing.

So Yul Kim

Record when signed: 8-1
Signing type: Straight up
Weight class: Strawweight
Age: 26

From ONE Championship to the UFC, So Yul Kim has jumped from one major promotion to another. Kim enters the promotion with five submissions, despite being a talented kickboxer. Kim has not lost in MMA since 2018.

Kaynan Kruschewsky

Kaynan Kruschewsky def. Dylan Mantello | DWCS 63

Record when signed: 15-1
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Lightweight
Age: 32
Debut: TBA

Jungle Fight lightweight champion Kaynan Kruschewsky choked Dylan Mantello unconscious on Dana White’s Contender Series to get into the UFC. The win was his fourth in a row – and fourth finish in the stretch. Finishing fights is nothing new for Kruschewsky, who’s been a professional for almost a decade.

James Llontop

Record when signed: 14-2
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Lightweight
Age: 24
Debut: TBA

Peru’s James Llontop dominated his way to a UFC deal. During his DWCS appearance, he defeated Malik Lewis handily to earn a unanimous decision. That made it a dozen in a row for Llontop, who was the Fusin FC welterweight champion. Don’t believe he fought for that promotion? Just check his neck tattoo.

Stephanie Luciano

Talita Alencar vs. Stephanie Luciano | DWCS 63

Record when signed: 5-1-1
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Strawweight
Age: 23
Debut: TBA

Stephanie Luciano’s DWCS fight wasn’t technically a win, but in a way it was. Though her three-round battle vs. IBJJF champion Talita Alencar ended in a draw, UFC CEO Dana White was most impressed with Luciano, who he awarded a contract to. One of a handful of Jungle Fight competitors to enter the UFC this year, Luciano is nicknamed “Rondinha,” a nod to female pioneer Ronda Rousey.

Marnic Mann

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – SEPTEMBER 13: (L-R) Marnic Mann battles Bruna Brasil of Brazil in a flyweight fight during Dana White’s Contender Series season six, week eight at UFC APEX on September 13, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC)

Record when signed: 6-1
Signing type: Short notice
Weight class: Strawweight
Age: 30
Debut: Sept. 16 vs. Josefine Knutsson (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at Noche UFC in Las Vegas

Things didn’t go particularly well for Marnic Mann the first time she fought in the international spotlight as she was finished by a Bruna Brasil head kick on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022. However, Mann got back on the horse with a unanimous decision win over Amber Brown under the LFA banner. That earned her a short notice opportunity in the UFC.

Jean Matsumoto

Record when signed: 14-0
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Bantamweight
Age: 24
Debut: TBA

If you’re looking for an exciting striking showcase fight from Dana White’s Contender Series, Season 7, Jean Matsumoto vs. Kasey Tanner is your bout. For three rounds, Tanner proved to be tough – but Matsumoto proved to be better. In a beautiful display of stand up, Matsumoto hunted and beat up Tanner for much of the 15 minutes. The performance wowed the UFC brass and made him an easy selection for a contract offer. Matsumoto enters the UFC undefeated with eight finishes. He competed in LFA among other regional promotions en route to the UFC.

Steven Nguyen

Record when signed: 9-1
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Featherweight
Age: 30
Debut: TBA

Steven Nguyen was 1-1 on DWCS when he entered his third appearance, a Sept. 12 bout vs. A.J. Cunningham. He broke the tie, picked up a finish, and signed a UFC contract all in the same night. In a grotesque beatdown of the Bryce Mitchell protege Cunningham, Nguyen proved he’d leveled up under coach Sayif Saud at Fortis MMA. The win was his third in a row and seventh finish in nine pro fights.

Vinicius Oliveira

Vinicius Oliveira def. Victor Madrigal DWCS 64

Record when signed: 19-3
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Bantamweight
Age: 27
Debut: TBA

“Lok Dog” has arrived. After numerous thrilling fights on the regional scene for UAE Warriors and other promotions, Vinicius Oliveira can finally call himself a UFC fighter. Against Victor Madrigal on DWCS, Oliveira scored an epic knockout, another addition to his lengthy highlight reel that includes 15 knockouts and two submissions. In his celebration, Oliveira broke out a pen – and then UFC CEO Dana White did, as he offered Oliveira a UFC contract.

Angel Pacheco

Angel Pacheco DWCS 64

Record when signed: 7-2
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Featherweight
Age: 31
Debut: TBA

The UFC almost never dishes out contracts to losers on DWCS and there have been plenty of opportunities to do so. However, Angel Pacheco forced their hand. In what some are calling the best fight in series history, Pacheco survived a knockdown in the opening seconds and continued to fight back despite a persistent onslaught by Danny Silva throughout the fight. Pacheco’s ear even exploded during the third round. Though he lost with 30-27s across the board, Pacheco’s passion and effort twisted the arm of UFC CEO Dana White to make the rare move of offering him a deal anyway.

Julia Polastri

Record when signed: 12-3
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Bantamweight
Age: 25
Debut: TBA

After a failed DWCS bid in 2021, Julia Polastri made the most of her second opportunity. Unwilling to let history repeat, Polastri didn’t let the win come to her. She went out and took it against Patricia Alujas, who she submitted by second-round rear-naked choke. The victory was her fourth in a row. She entered the bout holding the LFA strawweight championship, which she won in January.

Brendson Ribeiro

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – SEPTEMBER 05: (R-L) Brendson Ribeiro of Brazil punches Bruno Lopes of Brazil in a light heavyweight fight during Dana White’s Contender Series season seven, week five at UFC APEX on September 05, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

Record when signed: 15-5
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Light heavyweight
Age: 27
Debut: Dec. 9 vs. Zhang Mingyang (16-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night

Perhaps one of the most impressive signees off this season of DWCS, Brendson Ribeiro entered his UFC contract-earning fight a massive underdog against LFA light heavyweight champion Bruno Lopes. However, the oddsmakers weren’t fighting for him. Ribeiro bludgeoned Lopes with a massive consciousness-snatching serious of punches. The win was his ninth-career TKO and extended his winning streak to three.

Serhiy Sidey

Record when signed: 10-1
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Bantamweight
Age: 27
Debut: TBA

Serhiy Sidey’s win was controversial on DWCS, but that doesn’t really matter. He’s in the UFC now. Although referee Kevin MacDonald jumped the gun in the eyes of many including UFC president Dana White, Sidey was offered a contract for his first-round TKO of Ramon Taveras. On the Canadian regional scene prior to DWCS, Sidey found great success. He held bantamweight titles for both Battlefield Fight League and BTC. Eight of his 10 wins have come inside the distance with six TKOs and two submissions.

Danny Silva

Danny Silva def. Angel Pacheco DWCS 64

Record when signed: 8-1
Signing type: DWCS
Weight class: Featherweight
Age: 26
Debut: TBA

The winning half of an all-time DWCS bout, Danny Silva put on a striking clinic against the absurdly durable Angel Pacheco during his UFC contract-earning him. An underling of Cub Swanson, Silva showed a lot in a little amount of time as he won his second fight in a row. Prior to his DWCS bout, Silva competed for LFA, CFFC, and Combate Global among other promotions.

Jean Silva

Record when signed: 11-2

Jean Silva showed a lot during his three-round outing vs. Kevin Vallejos on DWCS. He punched, kicked, and even barked his way to a unanimous decision win and UFC contract. The win was his eighth in a row and his first career decision victory.

Mohammad Yahya

Record when signed: 12-3
Signing type: Straight up
Weight class: Lightweight
Age: 29
Debut: Oct. 21 vs. Trevor Peek (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi

UAE Warriors lightweight champion Mohammad Yahya will provide some home-region representation at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, but this signing wasn’t simply to appeal ticket buyers. Riding a five-fight winning streak, Yahya has nine finishes in a dozen victories.

Top plays from Chiefs’ Week 4 win vs. Jets

Though Kansas City Chiefs fans expected their beloved team to win by more than a three-point margin in their Week 4 matchup against the New York Jets, the end result of the hotly-contested tilt was, ultimately, desirable.

Patrick Mahomes struggled, throwing two interceptions and several other passes that were nearly picked off. Isiah Pacheco led the way for Kansas City’s offense on the ground, gaining more than 100 rushing yards and scoring a touchdown that helped the Chiefs get out to an early 17-point lead.

Defensively, Chris Jones, Mike Edwards, and Drue Tranquill led the way to help contain the Jets’ resurgent offense.

While the game’s final score was certainly closer than most expected it would be, the Chiefs still managed to make highlight plays on both sides of the ball that were worthy of a revisit as fans conduct their post-mortems on Monday.

Check out all of Kansas City’s top plays below to re-live the Chiefs’ hard-fought Week 4 win over New York:
