2022 ZiPS Projections: Cleveland Guardians

After having typically appeared in the hallowed pages of Baseball Think Factory, Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections have now been released at FanGraphs for a decade. The exercise continues this offseason. Below are the projections for the Cleveland Guardians.

Batters

The overlying theme here is a state of averageness, and that’s not so bad. For a number of years, Cleveland’s outfield situation has been rather bleak, generally toward the bottom of the league, with little investment to make it better. This is the first time in a while that ZiPS sees some hope there. No, the Guardians didn’t pull a 180 and sign Starling Marte and Michael Conforto, but the likely players manning the outfield have better projections than most of those used out there in recent years. The most notable are Myles Straw and Steven Kwan, both of whom get projections that, in an entire season, put them a skosh above average. ZiPS doesn’t think they likely get any surprise star performances, but it’s a better situation.

The two likely meaningful breakouts in the roster are Nolan Jones and George Valera. ZiPS is happy with the latter’s entrance into the high minors, but there is concern about the former; that ceiling gets a lot lower if he doesn’t improve on 2021 and an unexciting .787 OPS for Triple-A Columbus. One can’t blame the ankle injury that ended Jones’ season, either, which was significant enough that he couldn’t play through it.

The middle infield is a similar story as the outfield. ZiPS sees more upside remaining for Andrés Giménez, and Amed Rosario is far from a problem. First base is a weak spot, with the computer holding out little hope for Bobby Bradley. It was a lot easier to excuse his underwhelming numbers when he was 22, but he’ll be 26 next season, and he didn’t even hit Triple-A pitchers all that convincingly last year. Speaking of players with offense that displeased ZiPS, let’s just say “Austin Hedges” and leave it there.

I was quite surprised to see a very aggressive projection for Richie Palacios, but Steamer appears to be on board here as well. Add in Gabriel Arias, and Cleveland actually may have some middle infield surplus they can trade to upgrade elsewhere.

José Ramírez is, of course, José Ramírez. After two calendar years of MVP-type numbers, I think we can safely stop worrying about that ugly first half of 2019. He is the best thing about the Guardians’ offense, and even if he’s at the age where there’s probably not another gear remaining, that would be kind of greedy.

Pitchers

Shane Bieber didn’t win a second AL Cy Young award, but he was in the hunt until shoulder pain cost him half a season. Luckily, there was no serious damage at the time, but with Cleveland falling out of playoff contention when the White Sox pulled away for good, there thankfully wasn’t any need to push his return too quickly; he came back in September, but the team was rightfully very conservative about his use. He’s the José Ramírez of the pitching staff, the shining light in the field of averageness.

ZiPS and Steamer differ on Cal Quantrill, with ZiPS the more optimistic this time, pegging Q as a solid No. 2 starter behind Bieber. The rest of the rotation is generally unimpressive but respectable, with a lot of options in case of emergency. After Zach Plesac, Triston McKenzie, and Aaron Civale, ZiPS sees five or six options that wouldn’t entirely fall on their face. It’s most intrigued by Peyton Battenfield, a 2019 draftee out of Oklahoma State who didn’t get significant professional time until this year thanks to the “not-so-fun size” 2020 season. He shot up very quickly through the minors, and if he had more professional time to look at, ZiPS would be even more optimistic than it is.

Like the rest of the team, the bullpen is middle-of-the-pack, with two big highlights at the top. ZiPS is all-in on Emmanuel Clase, and he is likely to have one of the (if not the) best ERA+ projections for any pitcher this year; last year’s was Aroldis Chapman at 170. ZiPS isn’t quite as ecstatic about James Karinchak, but that’s near the practical ceiling of what you can expect from a pitcher who walks five or six batters per nine innings. If he cuts off a walk or two, his upside is frightening.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned, players who will miss 2022 due to injury, and players who were released in 2021. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a big band orchestra that only plays nu-metal versions of baroque cantatas, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.36, similar to the post-June substance-enforcement environment.

Both hitters and pitchers are ranked by projected zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. ZiPS is assuming that the designated hitter will continue in force in 2022.

ZiPS is agnostic about future playing time by design. For more information about ZiPS, please refer to this article, or get angry at Dan on Twitter.

DeWALT 20V MAX XR 3-Speed Oscillating Tool Kit

#15

This kit frequently drops to this price, and it is a good deal for $99. If you wait you may eventually catch it at $99 with free shipping from other vendors.

Many on here will report long wait times and poor customer service but I’ve had nothing but luck with Acme Tools over the past 2 years I’ve been buying from them, even on backordered items. Looking at close to 15 or so orders for myself in that time frame.

Shilson wins title, Auggies 5th at NCWWC nationals – The Guillotine

TIFFIN, Ohio — With Emily Shilson (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) leading the way with her third collegiate national title, the Augsburg University women’s wrestling team claimed five All-Americans and placed fifth at the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships, held on Saturday at Tiffin University.

Shilson, who won two national titles (Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association and NCWWC) last season, repeated her NCWWC crown with a dominating performance at 109 pounds. She scored three 10-0 technical fall victories — her opening win in 48 seconds over Samantha Larsen of King (Tenn.), her semifinal win in 1:13 over No. 4-ranked Cassy Lopez of Presbyterian (S.C.), and the title victory in 3:28 over No. 2-ranked Aleeah Gould of King. The win was her second 10-0 technical fall over Gould this season, after beating her in the Captains Cup freestyle wrestling event in February.

Shilson finished her second collegiate season with an 8-0 record, with six technical falls and two pins. She has yet to lose a collegiate match in her career; now 22-0 with eight pins and 12 technical falls.

As a team, Augsburg finished fifth in the tournament, held for NCAA schools with varsity women’s wrestling programs, with 88.5 points, an improvement over its ninth-place finish in its inaugural season last year. Augsburg’s five All-Americans bring the program’s two-year total to 12 (nine NCWWC, three WCWA).

Marlynne Deede (SO, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) earned All-American honors for the second time in her college career, placing third at 155 pounds. She went 4-1 on the day with three pins and a technical fall. Ranked No. 3 nationally entering the tournament, she topped the No. 6, No. 4 and No. 8-ranked wrestlers during her tournament run. After a semifinal loss, Deede bounced back with a 1:26 pin of No. 4-ranked Viktorya Torres of King (Pa.) and a 9-8 win over No. 8-ranked Malea Palahniuk of North Central (Ill.) in the third-place match — her third win and second pin over Palahniuk this season.

Deede finished the season with a 10-2 record, with five technical falls and three pins. In her college career, she now has a 21-13 record with 10 technical falls and seven pins. She finished sixth at last year’s NCWWC national meet.

Autumn Flanigan (FY, Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) placed third at 136 pounds to finish her first college season at 7-1. The No. 6-ranked 136-pounder entering the meet, Flanigan claimed three wins over higher-ranked wrestlers — a 10-0, 52-second technical fall win over No. 3-ranked Dalia Garibay of Colorado Mesa in the quarterfinals, a 13-7 win over Julia Padilla of Emmanuel (S.C.) in the wrestlebacks and a 2:42 pin of No. 5-ranked Michelle Camacho of McKendree in the third-place match. Flanigan finished her inaugural college season with a 7-1 record, with four technicals and a pin.

Kya Rybachek (FY, Mountain Iron, Minn./Hibbing HS) finished fourth at 136 pounds, going 3-2 on the day to finish her season with a 6-5 record. Rybachek claimed two pins and a technical fall during the tournament, with a 2:23 pin of No. 5-ranked Zoe Nowicki of Adrian (Mich.) an a 1:19 pin of No. 7-ranked Kaylee Lacy of Colorado Mesa.

After seeing her inaugural college season end prematurely last year with an injury, Faith Tuttle (SO, North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul HS) earned her first collegiate All-American honor with a seventh-place finish at 170 pounds. Tuttle went 3-2 on the day with two pins, and capped her day with an 8-4 decision over No. 8-ranked Jasmine Hale of Adrian. Tuttle finished this season at 4-3 with three pins.

Sierra Brown Ton (JR, Allen, Texas/Einstein HS) went 1-2 at 130 pounds for the Auggies, while Melissa Jacobs (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West), 191 pounds), Destynie Pacheco (SO, El Paso, Texas/Pebble Hills HS, 155 pounds) and Kahlea Jolly (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS, 143 pounds) also competed at the tournament.

2020 wasn’t ‘just a random bad year,’ health experts say. COVID-19 made it one of the deadliest in US history.

Even as U.S. deaths from COVID-19 surpassed 400,000 this week, some Americans dispute the accuracy of the death toll, contending it is exaggerated.

400,000 Americans now dead from COVID-19, equaling US casualties from WWII

Final figures aren’t yet in, but preliminary numbers show 2020 is on track to become the deadliest year in U.S. history, with more than 3.2 million total deaths – about 400,000 more than 2019 – a sharp increase that public health experts attribute to COVID-19 and aligns with reported deaths from the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2,835,533 U.S. deaths in 2019. Before the pandemic, models projected a slightly higher number, about 2.9 million deaths, for 2020, said Dr. Jeremy Faust, an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

It’s not a coincidence, he said, that the 400,000 excess deaths closely resemble the number of coronavirus deaths in the U.S., which reached 401,796 as of Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins data.

“That is not a seasonal change or just a random bad year,” Faust said. “That is what every person who can correctly attest to these numbers can plainly see is a historic increase in excess mortality. If we put that together with the number of coronavirus deaths, it’s game, set, match.”

Excess deaths are defined as “the difference between the observed numbers of deaths in specific time periods and expected numbers of deaths in the same time periods.”

The CDC predicts excess deaths since Feb. 1 may be between 350,000 and 469,000. Faust says some models project the number may be closer to 430,000.

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond estimate excess deaths may be up to 50% higher than publicly reported.

By examining death certificates, they found more than 150,000 deaths were officially attributed to COVID-19 in March to July but determined that nearly 75,000 additional deaths were indirectly caused by the pandemic, according to a study published in October in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA.

DC landmark cathedral mourns 400K COVID deaths

With that logic, excess deaths easily may be higher than 500,000 or approaching 600,000, said Dr. Steven Woolf, director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

“That’s based on where we are right now, and unfortunately, we’re seeing the numbers climbing, so the concern is obviously that we’re going to end up with more excess deaths than that,” he said.

Deaths from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, are not the sole cause of 2020’s increase, as the country also has seen more overdoses, partly due to the isolation brought on by the pandemic.

According to the CDC, there were more than 81,000 overdose deaths in the 12 months ending in May 2020, marking the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded in a yearlong period. Overdose data for all of 2020 is not yet available.

‘Blood on his hands’: As US surpasses 400K COVID deaths, experts blame Trump administration for a ‘preventable’ loss of life

Faust said the country continues to see a historic increase in excess deaths among the young adult population, specifically ages 25 to 44.

A CDC study found deaths in that age group from all causes increased 26.5% from January to October, the largest average percentage change among all age groups. Faust said, according to modeling, the nation saw 7,300 excess deaths in this population from August to the end of November.

“Which, again, tells us that the pandemic and its effects are not just limited to the elderly,” he said.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine predicted in October the Trump administration’s pandemic approach could lead to 511,373 COVID-19 deaths by Feb. 28.

Dr. Ali Mokdad, professor of health metrics sciences at IHME and chief strategy officer for population health at the University of Washington, said the coronavirus pandemic has also led to an increase in smoking, drinking, domestic violence, mental health conditions, delayed medical care and more.

“All of these conditions contribute to health in the United States that has in many ways set us back,” he said. “And we haven’t seen the end of it.”

RS Elementary Students’ Artwork on Display at Fine Arts Center | SweetwaterNOW

ROCK SPRINGS — Students from Walnut and Westridge Elementary schools are participating in the fourth Youth Arts Month display at the Community Fine Arts Center and will have their artwork on exhibit through March 27.

National Youth Art Month is observed in March each year, and the CFAC has art displays of the Sweetwater County School District No. 1 student’s artwork all spring. This national observation recognizes the importance of art and arts education in school programs. Art, music, and the performing arts activities can help students develop life skills including self- expression, problem solving, creativity, individuality, and being able to see the beauty both in traditional art forms and the world around them.

“Each year we see creative and talented students’ artwork shared for the public and especially for the families,” CFAC director Debora Soule said. “I personally like the projects that you can see the kids’ imagination come to life!”

Updated data brands bioethanol as ‘cost-effective’ tool to decarbonise EU transport – EURACTIV.com

Following years of investments, a new report has found that crop-based bioethanol should now be considered a “cost-effective” measure to reduce road transport CO2 emissions by 2030.

The ethanol industry-commissioned report, conducted by the E3 modelling firm, has updated the PRIMES model, regularly used by the European Commission for its impact assessments.

The recent report presents the results of an identical exercise to Primes modelling – using the same experts, scenarios and model – but with market and technology input data updated and reflecting today’s energy system.

The authors noted that several EU pieces of legislation, including the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), pose obstacles for the rollout of bioethanol and call on EU policymakers to come up with a reality check, especially when it comes to costs.

Critics suggest that the European Commission relies on outdated data in its transport decarbonisation efforts.

Sources from the ethanol industry commented that the EU executive refuses to see the reality by not taking into account the multidimensional role of crop-based bioethanol in reducing GHG emissions, supporting the farming sector, and simultaneously providing a cheap solution.

EURACTIV contacted the EU executive to comment on the report, but no reply has been provided at the time of publication.

“Our technical analysis shows that crop-based bioethanol can be a cost-effective measure to reduce road transport CO2 emissions by 2030. Crop-based bioethanol has negative abatement costs driven by the lower price of bioethanol than the higher pre-tax gasoline price,” the report says.

Chart from the E3 modelling firm report.

The report suggests that the higher uptake of starch-based ethanol primarily drives the lower price of bioethanol after taking co-product credits into account.

“Starch-based bioethanol is projected to have the lowest production costs across all biofuels produced in 2030 […] The modelling confirms that eliminating the cap on crop-based fuels will have a positive effect on the penetration of bioethanol by 2030,” the report added.

Chart from the E3 modelling firm report.

Chart two shows that the production of advanced biofuels and electric vehicles, both pushed forward by the Commission, come with high costs.

‘Made in Europe’ proteins

Joao Pacheco, a Senior Fellow at Farm Europe, a think-tank specialising in agricultural matters, said the new report considered the current conditions of biofuel production, which are very different from those of 10 or 20 years ago.

“This updated assessment shows clearly that the first-generation biofuels of today have nothing to do with the ones of yesterday. Investments and new measures have been made to make it effective and more sustainable,” Pacheco said.

For the Portuguese expert, the growing demand for proteins to achieve food sovereignty in the EU, which is currently dependent on soybeans imported from Latin America – a source of deforestation – makes first-generation biofuels produced in Europe a major lever for the production of “Made in Europe” proteins.

In addition, he said the report highlights that in the context of circular economy, the concept of food-based biofuels is “unfounded” since biofuels can be part of supply chain strengthening food security – proteins, oils or fibres, valued on the market – and a source of stability and investment for farmers.

A cheaper green option

Pacheco stressed that given the challenges of the Green Deal, biofuels sourced in Europe are not only a locomotive to produce non-GM proteins, but they also represent an “affordable, credible and available lever to achieve the EU’s climate ambitions”.

“The PRIMES model updated by E3 shows that renewables from EU biomass are the most attractive solution for decarbonising the transport sector, even by 2030, from a price perspective. A tonne of carbon not emitted using biofuels will remain 2-3 times cheaper, compared to the tone of carbon not emitted using electric vehicles.”

“It’s a major asset in order to achieve a Green Deal that works for all, and not only for an elite,” he added.

Eric Sievers, Investment and Regulatory Director at Pannonia Bio, commented that cost is the number one driver of energy demand patterns. Hence, climate policy is first and foremost about cost.

“Yet no one in Brussels really discusses it in relation to the Fit for 55 and transport decarbonisation. Even the underlying Impact Assessment is quiet on cost,” he said.

He added that the updated data and methodology is “eye-opening”.

“Contrary to suggestion by the European Commission, their own model shows that the most cost-effective solutions to decarbonise road transport have been and will be crop biofuels and advanced biomethane,” he concluded.

Marvel Comics Announces 8 New Future-Shaping Titles

Marvel Comics decided to celebrate its birthday in style. Rather than expect everyone to get the house of ideas a present, the company made a big, splashy announcement regarding the future of its publishing line. Marvel revealed not one, but eight new titles that are poised to reshape the Marvel universe as we know it.

Celebrate Marvel’s birthday with a glimpse at the upcoming new titles that will shape the future of the Marvel Universe! 💥 #MarvelComics pic.twitter.com/p0nQ5Uk2pW

— Marvel Entertainment (@Marvel) August 31, 2021

The publisher revealed a timeline for these books, beginning with Devil’s Reign in December. The other titles will arrive every few weeks leading up to a new run of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur in February 2022. From Kang the Conquerer to Wolverine, a lot of major players are due for major shake-ups in these new titles. Needless to say, it’s going to be a jam-packed six months.

Here is the full lineup of new Marvel Comics titles.

“All hell breaks loose in the Marvel Universe as the Kingpin finally declares all-out war on the heroes in Devil’s Reign! Having set the stage in their Eisner-nominated Daredevil epic, Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s far-reaching crossover event finds Mayor Fisk outlawing all Super Heroes in New York and unleashing intel on all their dark secrets, while pitting Daredevil, Elektra, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and many more against his Thunderbolt agents. But in the end…Who Will Reign?”

Avengers Forever

“Marvel Comics’ Avengers Forever pulls together archeologist Tony Stark, AKA the Invincible Ant-Man, and Avengers from across the multiverse to bring order to timelines where ‘hope’ is a four letter word. Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder present an all-new series that will redefine the Avengers as…the Multiverse’s Mightiest Heroes.”

“The future of the Marvel Universe is here, and Timeless is where it all begins. When a threatening new timeline emerges, Kang the Conqueror must fight his way through the coming year to protect the main 616 timeline he’s worked centuries to solidify as his own. Jed MacKay, Kev Walker, Joe Bennett, Mark Bagley, and more provide a first look at what’s coming to the Marvel Universe in 2022 in a story that will prove…the Future is Timeless.”

X Lives of Wolverine / X Deaths of Wolverine

“House of X and Powers of X ushered in the First Krakoan Age of the X-Men. Now, Marvel Comics’ X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will test ‘the best there is at what he does’ before any mutant can survive to the Second Krakoan Age. Benjamin Percy, Joshua Cassara, and Federico Vicentini tell two interlocked tales about what happens to Wolverine when…His Pasts Meet His Future.”

She-Hulk

“Marvel Comics’ She-Hulk, from Rainbow Rowell and Rogê Antônio, throws the book at Jennifer Walters as she tries to put her rage-filled days behind her and return to practicing law in defense of the innocent. But when a friend from her past comes knocking with a mystery she can’t resist, She-Hulk gets…Back To Bashing.”

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War

“Dan Slott is joined by Carlos Pacheco and Rachael Stott for Marvel Comics’ Fantastic Four: Reckoning War, an epic saga over 15 years in the making. The original secret war of the Marvel Universe has been reignited and every living being in reality is in danger, for we are finally at…Our Day Of Reckoning.”

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

“Lunella Lafayette and her lovable 20-foot dinosaur are BACK in Marvel Comics’ Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. But what shape will their partnership take in this exciting new era? Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for more news about the next adventure of the biggest brain in the world that will send dino-sized shockwaves throughout the Marvel Universe. In 2022, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will bring new meaning to the term “Marvel Team-Up” in a tale that promises to…Shake Your World.”

There is much to process here. For one, a lot of characters that are about to become a big part of the MCU are present in these books. She-Hulk is about to get a show on Disney+. The Fantastic Four movie reboot is in the works. The X-Men are poised to join the MCU soon. It’s not a coincidence that Marvel is trying to boost the profile of those characters in the comics.

In particular, Kang appears as though he might be the next Thanos. Jonathan Majors is set to play the villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. But he made a surprise appearance at the end of Loki season 1, introduced as He Who Remains. Again, not surprising that the company wants to get readers more familiar with him before Ant-Man 3 arrives.

This new run of important Marvel Comics titles kicks off with Devils Reign in December.

What do you think? Which of these books are you most excited for? Is this too much in a short period of time? Or do you like the bold swing? Join in on the conversation over on Facebook or Twitter!

On December 12 (Sunday), it’s a gold rush in Dubai as Pinoy fighters John Riel Casimero, Jayson Mama, and Donnie “Ahas” Nietes look to claim the spoils against some of the toughest fighters in the world in “Probellum: Revolution.”

Catch as former three-division champion Casimero (31W–4L) defends his WBO bantamweight belt against Englishman Paul Butler (33W–2L), while the undefeated Mama (16W–0L) aims to strip off the IBF flyweight title off of UK’s bet Sunny Edwards (16W–0L).

Also featured in the stacked fight card is veteran slugger and longest-reigning Pinoy boxing champion Nietes (43W–1L–5D), who will fight for a crack at the WBA super flyweight title in his eliminator showdown with Dominican Republic’s Norbelto Jimenez (30W–9L-5D).

Then on December 22 (Wednesday), the ringside action continues with another championship face-off, this time in the Dominican Republic as Philippines’ own Victorio “Vicious” Saludar (21W–4L) looks to retain his WBA minimumweight title in hostile territory against 21-year old contender Erick Rosa “Mini Pacman” Pacheco (4W–0L).

Don’t miss all the happenings in “Probellum: Revolution” live this December 12 at 12 AM, with replays the following day at 3 PM and 7 PM; plus, “Saludar vs. Rosa” live from the Dominican Republic on December 22 at 9 AM, with same day and next day replays all on SKY Pay-Per-View’s Filipino Boxing Bundle.
