A former fashion designer, Elena Brower grew tired of the ever-changing ideals of fashion, its relentless deadlines, and constantly feeling isolated and inadequate. Moving away from that past, in her present she has turned to yoga and found strength in following the example of people that lived authentically and deeply. In doing so, she has found a love for her body, a passion for what is good for her, and finally peace.
This is not to say that her life is now perfect; she has faced the challenges of both divorce and loss of her mother. Nor has life slowed down. Elena is as busy as ever with global yoga workshops, her team, book deadlines, and spending time with her son.

The difference between her past and her present lies in how she is now empowered to balance both beauty and heartache to create serenity wherever she is in life. As she looks forward to the future, Elena realizes that she has found her life’s purpose as a mother, a student, and a teacher, and as a Wellness Advocate for doTERRA.

‘NCIS’ star Wilmer Valderrama welcomes first child with fiancée Amanda Pacheco: ‘Straight out of heaven’

  • February 22, 2021

Wilmer Valderrama and his fiancée Amanda Pacheco are parents, showing off their newborn baby girl Sunday on Instagram.

The “NCIS” star and “That ’70s Show” alum Valderrama, 41, posted a series of hospital room photos showing off the baby born on Feb. 15. One photo showed the baby girl, whose name was not given, in the arms of her shirtless father as her mother looked on with a smile.

“Straight out of heaven we welcome our first daughter,” Valderrama wrote.

“Life is an ever evolving journey, and for all those times when our path needs a light.. often angels are sent to show us the way and that we can be more,” he wrote, adding the hashtag #ItsJustUs3Now.

The 29-year-old model Pacheco wrote the same words with the same hashtag on her Instagram post.

The engagement: Wilmer Valderrama proposes to model Amanda Pacheco on New Year’s Day

Valderrama showed the beaming child in another Instagram stories photo, calling her “mi angelita.”

On Feb. 14, the day before their baby was born, Valderrama posted a romantic Valentine’s Day photo saying, “Don’t worry about giving me Chocolates, you’re giving us a little miracle Chimichanga!”

Valderrama and Pacheco announced their New Year’s Day engagement on their respective Instagram accounts. “It’s just us now,” they each captioned a dreamy photo of Valderrama on one knee in front of Pacheco on a La Jolla beach in San Diego.

U.S. could force Apple to make the iPhone cheaper and easier to repair

CNN reports that if the U.S. government pushes, future smartphones could be designed specifically for easier and cheaper repairs. Manufacturers such as Apple have taken it on the chin from critics who argue that the manner in which Apple designs the iPhone makes it harder for independent fix-it shops to fix a damaged device by limiting these shops’ access to internal components.

The U.S. government could regulate smartphone repairs making them easier to fix

The U.S. would like to see device owners use independent repair shops or turn to DIY
A week after Biden made his comments, the FCC promised to get rid of illegal restrictions on the repair of several products including smartphones. Regulations that the U.S. government would like to see would require a company like Apple to make parts, tools, diagnostics, and repair manuals more available to third-party businesses.
McQueen says that phone manufacturers have worked hard to protect their devices from water and dust. “Smartphone vendors have worked hard to get this to high levels,” he says, “but if devices do have more screw holes and have to be easier to take apart, then would these ratings be compromised or have to be lowered?”
But this raises another issue and McQueen states, “Would some companies still use high-end components across all their models if they know it will be easy to have them repaired or replaced?” He adds that “It could damage a vendor’s brand value if they’re selling products with noticeably inferior components to combat this possibility.”
A move by the government to regulate smartphone repair could save consumers some big-time bucks. “If a $12 chip stops working when your computer battery dies, I could charge a couple hundred dollars to repair it; not the $1,500 Apple charges to fix it,” said Louis Rossmann. The latter is a right-to-repair activist and owns Rossmann Repair Group. On YouTube, he has 1.6 million followers.

Manufacturers hate repairs because they can prevent the sale of a new unit from taking place

Changes pushed by lawmakers could prevent bans on certain components like chips that prevent independent repair shops from buying them. “[New rules would] mean if companies are going to use a certain chip phone, I could buy it so that if a customer’s device dies, I can fix it,” he said.
Gartner’s Pacheco may have come across the real reason why manufacturer’s like Apple want to control the repair process. Pacheco says, “Depending on how the regulation is put forward, it will probably extend or prolong the lifespan of the (broken) device. This means companies will need to entice consumers to switch or upgrade smartphones with better specs and other approaches. They will need to refocus their efforts.”
During a 2019 Congressional judiciary committee hearing, Apple that safety and reliability concerns over repairs are why the company keeps such a tight grip over the process. And in a comment that not too many believe to be true, Apple said that it doesn’t turn a profit on repairs.

Marine, 20, killed in crash while helping disabled vehicle on I-5 identified

A 20-year-old Marine who was struck and killed while he assisted a driver in a disabled vehicle on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton was identified Tuesday as Lance Cpl. Alberto Lucio.

Lucio, a military policeman stationed at the nearby base, stopped after a driver in a Ford Edge crashed the SUV in the southbound lanes near Las Pulgas Road about 3:20 a.m. Monday.

The vehicle was in the traffic lanes without its lights on, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner’s Office.

As Lucio assisted the driver and a passenger, a box truck crashed into the Marine and the disabled SUV, the CHP said.

Lucio died at the scene. Marine officials said he was from Smithville, Tenn. His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.

Lucio was a member of the Security and Emergency Services Battalion. In a statement, Battalion Commanding Officer Col. John Black said Lucio “performed a noble and selfless act” when he stopped to provide “critical aid to a person in need.”

“Lance Cpl. Lucio gave his life in the service of others. His actions epitomized servant leadership and personified the very best in our emergency services personnel,” Black said.

“Please honor Lance Cpl. Lucio’s memory through your actions, words and deeds,” he said.

The SUV driver, a 36-year-old man, and his passenger, a 31-year-old woman, suffered major injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment. An update on their condition was not available Tuesday.

CHP Sgt. Nicole Pacheco said the SUV driver remained hospitalized Tuesday and is expected to be booked into jail when he is released from the hospital, but she did not say what charges he could face. She said the charges will be announced when he is arraigned.

Work is underway on a $12.12 million Downey sports facility that’s part of a larger effort to redevelop 70 acres of Los Angeles County land that were once part of a rehabilitation hospital.

County officials marked the start of construction on the Downey Sports Complex with a ceremonial groundbreaking Saturday morning, March 13. The already-in-progress 5-acre complex is set to be finished in November and will boast three multipurpose sports fields, a restroom, a concession stand, an equipment storage room, office space and a surface parking lot, according to a press release from Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office. Her Fourth District includes Downey, and her office provided $10 million for the project.

The rest came from Downey, which will pay for the synthetic turf, office space and a scoreboard. Once the facility is ready to open, Downey will lease the complex from the county for $1 a year and operate it.

“I think a lot of us over this past year realized how much we took for granted when we weren’t allowed to do those things anymore,” Hahn said in a statement before the groundbreaking, alluding to the coronavirus pandemic. “And for many people — especially kids — that was sports! Sports aren’t just about exercise. They build comradery, confidence, and leadership skills.”

Downey officials did not return a request for comment Friday night on their plans for the facility, such as whether they intend it primarily for residents or as a regional attraction, and whether they plan to give operating permits for youth sports leagues.

But Hahn, in her statement, emphasized the facility benefitting Downey.

“Sports are an important part of childhood,” she said, “and this sports complex is going to be an asset to Downey residents.”

The complex is part of the Rancho Los Amigos South Campus, which the county plans to eventually redevelop. But much of the planning for that larger effort has not yet been finalized, said Liz Odendahl, a Hahn spokeswoman.

Those 70 acres, on the South Gate border, were part of the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, which Los Angeles County operates. But about 30 years ago, according to the press release from Hahn’s office, the center consolidated its facilities — leaving the south campus abandoned.

Hahn attended the groundbreaking with Downey Mayor Claudia Frometa, Councilmembers  Blanca Pacheco and Sean Ashton, and LA County Director of Public Works Mark Pestrella. The ceremony was socially distanced to abide by coronavirus health guidelines.

The SM Startup Package: 100 Small business owners invited to set up shop in SM malls

It has been almost two years since the pandemic brought Filipino life and many livelihoods to a screeching halt. According to a 2020 Asian Development Bank (ADB) study of 1,804 Philippine MSMEs, 70.6% were forced to temporarily close with 66.2% reported to have temporary staff cuts during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Bucking these statistics and the odds created by the changes in the landscape, the enterprising Filipino found many opportunities in online businesses, with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recording over 88,000 new e-commerce registrations at the end of 2020. This figure is projected to be a million e-commerce enterprises by 2022 (from 500,000 in 2020). By taking advantage of the online space, MSME owners have become unsung heroes of the economy, all the while providing for their families and making their business dreams a reality.

SM Supermalls very well understands the potential of each Filipino to be successful business owners because of their founder, the late Mr. Henry Sy’s own inspiring story. Sy, fondly called “Tatang” in SM, started out as a small business owner with his first footwear shop ShoeMart.

It is said that because of this, it is in SM’s DNA to enable and inspire small businesses like the one it once was. This October 15, not coincidentally Tatang’s birthday, SM launched The SM StartUp Package, which aims to provide small online businesses the valuable support they need so they can set up their own shop in an SM mall. This is available to the first 100 digital-based MSME owners who currently don’t have a shop inside SM or any other physical store in general.

The package offers features such as start-up-friendly rental rates and use of kiosks or carts free of charge; marketing assistance to give the brand free exposure in SM online assets and ad spaces inside malls; financial assistance with BDO; and mentorship from SM experts on operations and marketing.

SM Startup Package

The Start Up Markets, as they will be called, will be situated in prime mall locations within 13 regional and premier malls in major cities: SM North Edsa, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM Southmall, SM Pampanga, SM Clark, SM Grand Central, SM Sta. Rosa, SM City Cebu, SM Iloilo, SM Bacolod, SM CDO Downtown Premier, and SM Lanang Premier.

“We created The SM StartUp Package because we saw how Filipinos persevered in the past year. Very much true to the spirit of Henry Sy, who always said he worked harder during bad times,  many MSMEs did not let the pandemic stop them from providing good service and products — even from their own homes. We want to give them a chance to further grow their businesses and brands, and enable them to start their own SM shops which they can one day grow into business empires, just like our founder once did.,” said SM Supermalls President Steven T. Tan.

Following Tatang’s legacy

The late founder Mr. Henry Sy is also proof of an entrepreneur’s resilience and hard work. After arriving in the Philippines at just 12 years old from China, he helped sell products in his father’s retail store. When he saved enough money, he was able to open his first business in 1958: a footwear shop called ShoeMart, which would later become the foundation for today’s 77 SM Supermalls.

The success of the mall didn’t come without challenges. A notable one was when Mr. Sy opened SM Megamall in Edsa in 1985 during a turbulent time in the Philippines. Instead of letting the political and economic climate discourage him, it pushed him to work harder to overcome the crisis. This disposition would carry over in the next few decades and would inspire a new generation of MSME owners to look for opportunities even during adversity.

This is evident in the stories of entrepreneurs like Chizmozza founder Hannah Ramos, who sold her own mozzarella recipe online before opening her food cart at SM, Ian Darcy, who started his namesake fragrance brand after being forced to resign from his marketing job; and Oishii Maki Chef Randy Molina, who started a sushi and maki business at SM after working as an Overseas Filipino as a Japanese Chef in 5-star hotels.

“I took a chance to grow Chizmozza from an online store to have one humble food cart in SM North Edsa back in 2016. Now Chizmozza has 21 SM branches. They saw the potential of our unique cheese products and through our mutual hard work and perseverance, we grew, even though the pandemic.” Hannah shared

HANNAH RAMOS SM Startup Package

These are just some of the stories behind successful MSME owners and how they were able to succeed when empowered with the right resources. The SM StartUp Package will allow more people to level up their online start-up, inspiring them to follow in the footsteps of “Tatang” so they can take more confident steps even during these uncertain times.

During the virtual launch of the SM StartUp Package hosted by Sam Yg last Oct 15, SM Supermalls President Mr. Steven Tan was joined by three young successful MSMEs; Nina Ellaine Dizon-Cabrera from Colourette, Patty Ang from Patton, and Jerald Sze from 365 Designs Retailing, who talked about how their business began online and how they successfully grew it at SM Supermalls.

Other notable guests during the launch included Ms. Jean Pacheco, Assistant Secretary of DTI, and the SM Super Team composed of BDO Network Bank’s SVP and MSME Business Head Karen Cua, BDO Acquiring FVP Merchant Partnerships and Retail Sales Head Bob Tolentino, SM Supermalls VP for Corporate Marketing, Grace F. Magno, and AVP for Leasing Strategy and Operations, Gina T. Katigbak, who discussed details of the SM StartUp Package.
