News: Apprentice helps Stanley Black & Decker cut costs and speed up production at Rotherham plant

An apprentice toolmaker is saving the world’s largest manufacturer of tools £40,000 a year after devising new processes to sustain a number of tools that would usually be scrapped.

Gabriella Spencer is a second-year apprentice with Stanley Black & Decker at its facility in Hellaby, Rotherham, which manufactures precision-engineered tools.

The 21-year-old, who is currently the only female engineer on the factory floor, is responsible for maintaining press, punch and die tools; operating machinery including mills, lathes and surface grinders; and making new parts for machinery such as moulding and chisel tools.

A keen problem solver, Gabriella strives to look for ways to improve company processes.

She created a saving of £26,000 by reprocessing damaged carbide discs and provided further sustained usage, which now has the potential to save her company an additional £20,000 a year.

“I decided to make a jig for the carbide discs with three screws to hold it down on the grinding bed,” says Gabriella. “I grind the damage off on the surface grinder, then recut the groove on a lathe. The discs usually cost £220 each – but this process reduces the cost down to just £20 per disc, potentially saving £1,600 a month. There were also 120 old discs I was able to sustain.”

Gabriella was also tasked with a project to design and build product test equipment for plastic toolboxes. The project involved a variety of practical skills, including Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) machining, welding and fabrication. Her successful work on this project is set to save Stanley Black & Decker £12,000 per year in transport costs and one week of production lead time.

In addition, Gabriella has polished up damaged socket chisels so they can be re-used instead of being scrapped, saving costs of £10 per chisel, as well as creating a process to weld up heater plates and aluminium cassettes in-house instead of them being shipped to an external company – reducing costs by £100 per week and speeding up production.

“I’m always looking at ways to improve and save the company money,” she says. “I gain a sense of achievement when I identify an issue and make a positive contribution which addresses the problem.”

Gabriella, who comes from a family of manufacturers, began her apprenticeship with the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in September 2020 and is an advanced manufacturing and engineering apprentice. The centre has multimillion pound facilities on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham.

Nikki Jones, Director of the AMRC Training Centre, says: “We’re really proud of the work our apprentices do, and Gabriella is a fine example of how an individual can make a real difference to their employer and help find new sustainable methods to improve our environment, something we need now more than ever.

“The apprenticeships we offer help our students make those first steps towards learning the skills they need to gain full-time employment.” Gabriella chose an apprenticeship for its structured training programme, equipping her to build a foundation of skills and expertise in the classroom, which she has then developed in a real working environment.

“Doing an apprenticeship at the AMRC Training Centre has changed my life completely as it’s allowed me to become more independent. I also love that it gives me the opportunity to learn on the job.

“I really enjoy my work and I find it rewarding as I get to do something different every day and I’m always learning. I would love to see more women in engineering as I don’t know many. People are put off with the thought of heavy lifting, and a male-dominated environment – but everyone is so friendly and always willing to lend a hand.”

In the future, Gabriella plans to become multi-skilled, learn welding, mechanical maintenance and electrical skills – with the hope of also progressing into a hands-on leadership role, supporting young engineers of the future.

Steve Ashforth, factory manager at Stanley Tools Ltd, can attest to how Gabriella has worked tenaciously through the most difficult of times with the pandemic and has impressed us with her work ethic and commitment to her education at the AMRC Training Centre.

He adds: “Gabriella has a thirst for knowledge and training, not only for the course and role of toolmaker, but also the skills outside of those required as she’s also volunteered for external courses, welding and first aid to name a few.

“We’re confident in Gabriella’s potential in the role and sure that with further experience, she’ll become a fully rounded engineer and valued asset to the business.”

SB 9 tramples local control to promote density – Daily Breeze

California cities are taking significant steps to bring down the high cost of housing in our communities. While cities don’t build new homes, they are responsible for planning, zoning and approving housing, and cities all over the state are doing just that.

By the end of 2022, all of the state’s major regional governments, including cities, will have identified and planned for more than two million units of additional housing statewide as part of the “housing element” process. Those two million units planned are on top of the millions of homes that cities have already planned, zoned, and approved previously.

Unfortunately, current legislation in Sacramento threatens the ability of local governments to plan for the type of housing that’s needed in our communities, while also trampling local democracy and the rights of local citizens.

Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) would allow developers to build up to four housing units on a single parcel in residential neighborhoods traditionally zoned for single-family homes. While high-density housing is part of the solution to our housing supply problems, SB 9 goes about it in the absolute worst way.

The legislation gives developers too much control over the local housing approval process. It requires cities and local governments to give “ministerial” approval to these development plans virtually any time they’re filed by developers, except under very limited circumstances. Put simply, SB 9 effectively requires automatic local government approval of these projects.

This type of “by right” approval for developers circumvents the important local government review process that includes extensive public engagement — eliminating local control and putting developers, not local governments or local citizens, in control.

What’s worse, there are zero requirements that the new housing developments be affordable housing.

It’s not hard to imagine the consequences of this process. Developers will seek out parcels in traditional single-family home neighborhoods and outbid all other prospective buyers in order to turn single-family lots into multi-unit developments.

If you’re a neighbor to one of these developments you have zero ability to influence the process, and zero opportunity for local input. Citizens and local elected officials will be almost powerless to stop or influence the composition of these developments.

Rather than help bring down housing costs, SB 9 would likely increase the cost of housing.

If you’re a prospective homebuyer or renter, you won’t be able to compete with the deep pockets of developers’ intent on supersizing housing on a single lot. And because there are no provisions in SB 9 that require the new housing to be affordable housing, the new units will be market rate housing that remain out of reach for many working-class families.

Furthermore, SB 9 is unlikely to create enough new housing in a timely fashion to have any material impact on the supply/demand imbalance or bring down home prices.

Some worry SB 9 will also lead to further gentrification of neighborhoods by pushing out working-class and lower-income families looking for single-family homes they can afford.

SB 9 is opposed by a broad coalition of hundreds of local governments, the League of California Cities, social justice advocates, affordable housing groups, neighborhood councils and others.

SB 9 attempts to address an important issue — increasing housing supply to improve affordability. Unfortunately, the legislation goes about it in the wrong way. State lawmakers should instead work with local governments to provide the tools and resources to streamline local housing approvals and fund real affordable housing.

For several years, cities have worked with state lawmakers so they will allow cities to use more of existing property tax dollars to subsidize affordable housing, invest in infrastructure needed to support housing and to invest in housing near job centers.

But SB 9 is not a solution. Instead, SB 9 is simply a sweetheart deal for developers while silencing communities.

307 Horse Racing gets long-parked Casper liquor license, but Commissary Mall plans could change

CASPER, Wyo. — The Casper City Council approved the transfer of Retail Liquor License No. 5 from Travis Taylor to 307 Horse Racing during its Tuesday, November 2 meeting.

307 Horse Racing Chief Financial Officer Kyle Ridgeway told that council in August that the WERCS Group, which is the parent company of 307 Horse Racing, was planning to renovate the Commissary Mall to operate a new liquor store, bar and off-track horse race gaming machine room in the building.

While that could still happen, Ridgeway told the council on Tuesday that it is possible 307 Horse Racing will ask the council to approve transferring the license to another location in Casper to host the business.

Ridgeway said that the WERCS Group is evaluating what it will do, considering the cost to renovate the Commissary Mall versus putting the business in another space.

He said that transferring the license to another location might put the license into use sooner than if the Commissary Mall is kept as the location, noting that with supply chain issues, it “could take longer than a year” for 307 Horse Racing to be operational in the Commissary Mall.

Ridgeway said that as of Tuesday, he didn’t have a lease for another space that he could present to the council.

Since Retail Liquor License No. 5 hasn’t seen much use since it was acquired by Travis Taylor in 2016, Council member Bruce Knell asked whether it would be possible to put a timeline on when 307 Horse Racing is expected to put the license to use.

Ridgeway said that the company has spent $3 million to buy 150 historic horse race gaming machines that are set to be delivered this month.

“I’ve got to be able to put them somewhere,” Ridgeway said, indicating to the council that 307 Horse Racing doesn’t plan to sit on the liquor license indefinitely.

Council member Steve Cathey suggested that it may be more appropriate for the council to establish a timeline to see progress on 307 Horse Racing putting the license to use in February 2022, when the council will consider renewing all liquor licenses held across Casper.

City Attorney John Henley said that if the council approved the liquor license transfer, 307 Horse Racing would have at minimum one year to put it to use, as this is established in Wyoming law.

Vice Mayor Ray Pacheco said that he thinks 307 Horse Racing has a significant enough investment that he was willing to approve the liquor license transfer.

The council approved the transfer on a vote of 6-0. Council members Kyle Gamroth and Amber Pollock recused themselves ahead of consideration of the issue. Council member Shawn Johnson was not in attendance.

The city can have a maximum of 37 full retail liquor licenses under state statute.

City Announces $4 Million in Grants for Pandemic-Stressed Small Businesses | South Seattle Emerald

Alicia Haskins is no doubt applying for a grant from the City’s Small Business Stabilization Fund program.

After visiting small businesses around Rainier Beach, Mayor Jenny Durkan announced the program at a press conference at Rainier Health and Fitness, where she said the fund would focus on businesses owned by women and People of Color “because of the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities.”

The nonprofit has provided low-cost gym services such as personal training and group classes since its founding in 2005. Fitness centers such as gyms have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic and its resulting restrictions.

Haskins, Rainier Health’s executive director, says Rainier Health has seen low membership rates, with many canceling their memberships and, at the same time, not enough people joining.

Rainier Health has persisted, adding online classes and shifting group class sizes to be smaller.

“It’s been tough for everyone,” she says, adding that it’s been important for Rainier Health to help the community maintain a healthy body to fight any kind of chronic disease. Still, it’s a balancing act.

“For us, it’s trying to be creative and play our part in getting our community active, but as a business, people not wanting to be in large crowds or be in public spaces means lower usage rate.”

The fund, which has been offered by the City five times before, will give small businesses grants that range between $5,000, $10,000, and $20,000. Businesses that are eligible must apply by midnight on Nov. 9. A total of $4 million in grants will be awarded.

The applications will also be available in seven additional languages including Somali, Spanish, Thai, and Korean. The Office of Economic Development will also offer multilingual virtual seminars to help small business owners apply for the fund.

Haskins says a grant from the City would go a long way for Rainier Health, allowing them to invest in their staff and facility so that “it’s better suited for the times we are in.”

“Our top priority is our staff; making sure we have people on deck to serve the community in this capacity — full-time staff and group class instructors and personal trainers and coaches,” Haskins says. “We are trying to build an outdoor gym and a bigger platform where people can exercise with the best ventilation.”

And while the grant will give businesses like Rainier Health much-needed help, Haskins says the community has been pivotal to their survival throughout the pandemic.

“Alongside the cancellations and the people that decide to be distant … on the flip side there’s been a lot of community support on a larger scale with PPP loans and COVID relief and individual support that has really shined through despite the challenges,” she says.

A week in, big issues unresolved at COP26 | PBS NewsHour

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — After a week of negotiations, numerous of the stickiest issues in climate talks remain unresolved and teams of cabinet ministers from different countries are being sent to move things along.

Briefing the United Nations Conference of Parties, or COP26, on the first week’s progress, COP President Alok Sharma had to correct himself, noting that “some” issues had been settled, rather than “many.”

Numerous developing nations were pessimistic. They called progress “disappointing,” saying announcements were high in quality but worried that they were low in quantity.

No deals have been made yet on the three main goals of the U.N. conference — pledges to cut emissions in half by 2030 to keep the Paris climate deal’s 1.5 degree Celsius temperature rise goal alive; the need for $100 billion annually in financial help from rich countries to poor ones; and the idea that half of that money go on adapting to global warming’s worst effects. Several other issues, including trading carbon and transparency, also weren’t solved yet.

And on the issue of more frequent updates of countries’ emission-cutting goals — something poorer nations seek — negotiators listed nine different time options for future negotiators to choose from.

Sharma named teams of two ministers — one from a rich country, one from a poor — for each issue to oversee negotiations on each topic, a technique used in the past.

Not fixing the financial pledge problem shows rich nations’ pledges are “an empty commitment,” and without fixing that these climate talks cannot be successful, representatives from several countries, including Guinea, said.

“There is a history of broken promises and unfulfilled commitments by developed countries,” Diego Pacheco Balanza of Bolivia told the conference.

Saudi Arabia, often accused of trying to weaken emission-cutting efforts, asked Sharma to end the conference at 6 p.m. on Friday no matter where they are in negotiations, even if they aren’t done.
