Brazil police arrest 300 after Bolsonaro supporters storm Congress, other buildings

Supporters of Brazil’s right-wing former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress and other government buildings in the capital Brasilia on Sunday in an attack that echoed the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot by supporters of former President Trump.

The latest: Authorities said late Sunday they had cleared the Congress, Supreme Court and presidential palace offices of rioters, the New York Times reports. At least 300 people had been arrested, police said.

What happened: Footage broadcast by several news outlets earlier Sunday showed protesters climbing onto the Congress building’s roof, smashing some of its glass windows and doors, and damaging furniture.

  • President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who took office less than a week ago, was in Sao Paulo at the time of the attacks.
  • About 3,000 people took part in what initially started as a demonstration in Brasilia, according to local media.

What they’re saying: “Whoever did this will be found and punished,” Lula tweeted Sunday. “Democracy guarantees the right to free expression, but it also requires people to respect institutions.”

  • “There is no precedent in the history of the country what they did today. For that, they must be punished,” he continued.
  • Lula also blamed Bolsonaro, saying “there are several speeches by the former president encouraging this … this is also his responsibility and the parties that supported him.”

Bolsonaro, who flew to Florida just before Lula’s inauguration last week, criticized the attacks in a series of tweetspostedseveral hours after his supporters stormed the buildings.

  • He said peaceful protests were a part of democracy, but not the “destruction and invasions of public buildings, like what occurred today.”
  • He also rejected Lula’s assertion he shared responsibility, saying there was “no proof” he encouraged the attacks.

Between the lines: While Bolsonaro did not explicitly concede or recognize Lula or his victory in an address following last year’s election, he agreed to a transition of power in a press conference that took place two days after the vote.

The big picture: The attacks were condemned across Brazil and internationally, including in the U.S.

  • President Biden called the situation “outrageous” when asked by reporters about it.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan tweeted that the U.S. “condemns any effort to undermine democracy in Brazil.”

  • “Our support for Brazil’s democratic institutions is unwavering. Brazil’s democracy will not be shaken by violence.”

Brazil’s Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco, meanwhile, tweeted that he “vehemently repudiate[d] these anti-democratic acts, which must urgently undergo the rigor of the law.”

State of play: Brasilia Gov. Ibaneis Rocha announced on Twitter that he had fired Anderson Torres, the security secretary of the federal district who had been in charge of ensuring the area’s safety. Torres is a Bolsonaro ally who previously served as the former president’s minister of justice, per the New York Times.

Jair Bolsonaro supporters storm Brazilian government buildings | Jair Bolsonaro News | Al Jazeera

Supporters of Brazilian far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro who refuse to accept his electoral defeat have stormed the presidential palace, Congress, and the Supreme Court in the capital, Brasilia.

Videos on social media showed Bolsonaro supporters smashing windows and furniture in the National Congress and Supreme Court buildings on Sunday. They climbed onto the roof of the Congress building, where Brazil’s Senate and Chamber of Deputies conduct their legislative business, unfurling a banner that read “intervention” and an apparent appeal to Brazil’s military.

Images on TV channel Globo News also showed protesters roaming the presidential palace, many of them wearing green and yellow – the colours of the Brazilian flag, which have also come to symbolise the Bolsonaro government.

One social media video showed a crowd outside pulling a policeman from his horse and beating him to the ground.

Security forces used tear gas in an effort to repel the demonstrators. Local media estimating about 3,000 people were involved in the incident.

The siege comes just a week after the inauguration of Bolsonaro’s leftist rival, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Responding to the invasion, Lula declared a federal security intervention in Brasilia that will remain in place until the end of the month.

In a press conference, he blamed Bolsonaro and complained about a lack of security in the capital, saying authorities had allowed “fascists” and “fanatics” to wreak havoc.

“These vandals, who we could call fanatical Nazis, fanatical Stalinists … fanatical fascists, did what has never been done in the history of this country,” said Lula, who was on an official trip to Sao Paulo state. “All these people who did this will be found and they will be punished.”

Bolsonaro supporters have been protesting against Lula’s election win since the October 30 vote, blocking roads, setting vehicles on fire and gathering outside military buildings, asking armed forces to intervene. Many believed election results were fraudulent or unreliable.

Reporting from Rio de Janeiro, Al Jazeera’s Monica Yanakiew said that some Bolsonaro supporters had been camped out in Brasilia since the election.

“People from this camp and from other parts marched toward the square in Brasilia, called the Three Powers square, because in this same square you have Congress, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court and they’ve entered the three buildings,” she said.

“They went inside the Supreme Court, which they consider to be their main enemy, because they say that the Supreme Court is biased, and recognised an election that they say is stolen,” Yanakiew said, noting that the incident occurred after Lula’s January 1 inauguration, when authorities were less likely to expect such a siege.

However, she added the “big question” remained as to why demonstrators were so easily able to overrun security forces during the incident, which took place when legislators, justices and other officials were not on the premises.

The storming recalled the January 6 invasion of the United States Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump, who like Bolsonaro’s supporters, also claimed without evidence that the 2020 US presidential election was “stolen”.

US President Joe Biden described the situation in Brazil as “outrageous” and that he looked forward to continuing to work with Lula.

“I condemn the assault on democracy and on the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil. Brazil’s democratic institutions have our full support and the will of the Brazilian people must not be undermined,” Biden said on Twitter.

Brazilian law professor Diego Amparo said that like Trump, Bolsonaro had for years fomented distrust in government institutions.

“It’s the kind of rhetoric that was seen not only in the election cycle, but throughout the whole presidency of Bolsonaro,” he told Al Jazeera. “So this moment is really the concrete symbol of several years of trying to discredit the political and judicial institutions in the country.”

He added that many local officials and members of the armed forces maintain ties with Bolsonaro, making it a “very complicated situation” for Lula and his government to navigate.

On Twitter, Brazil’s Justice Minister Flavio Dino said: “This absurd attempt to impose their will by force will not prevail.”

“The government of the Federal District has ensured there will be reinforcements. And the forces at our disposal are at work,” he said.

Video on social media showed security forces forming a barrier with their shields as they moved towards the buildings.

Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco said he was in permanent contact with Brasilia’s Governor Ibaneis Rocha, and that the entire police apparatus had been mobilised to control the situation.

Bolsonaro left Brazil at the end of the year and travelled to Florida, the US state where Trump now resides. There was no immediate comment from the former president.

USDA Now Asking People to Register Their Vegetable Gardens for National Database – Business Game Changers

Healthy Foundation Pack!  Experience what it feels like to have a completely nourished body for the first time in your life!

“We welcome gardens nationwide to join us in the People’s Garden effort and all it represents,” said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, “Local gardens across the country share USDA’s goals of building more diversified and resilient local food systems, empowering communities to come together around expanding access to healthy food, addressing climate change and advancing equity.”

Secretary Vilsack added: “We encourage existing gardens and new gardens to join the movement. Growing local food benefits local communities in so many ways, and we offer technical resources to help. Also, it’s a great way to connect with your local USDA team members.”

Again, it is important to point out that the mission statement of the USDA does not involve anything to do with keeping Americans healthy. In fact, their track record over the years has done the complete opposite.

Case in point: In December 2020, a scientific committee, composed of 20 academics and doctors, recommended cutting the limit for added sugars in the diet to 6% of daily calories from 10% in the current guidelines. The group compiled a massive trove of data and presented this request to the USDA citing rising rates of obesity and the link between obesity and health problems like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

To be clear, you need absolutely 0% of your diet to be comprised of sugar but this panel seemingly knew the USDA — who hands out billions of taxpayer dollars to companies who specialize in addicting Americans to sugar — would never get behind a recommendation against all sugar. So, they offered a slight concession.

This scientific committee asked for a measly 4% drop in the USDA’s recommended sugar intake in foods — providing 835 pages of evidence showing the horrifying effects it is having on children and adults — and the USDA refused.

“The new evidence is not substantial enough to support changes to quantitative recommendations for either added sugars or alcohol,” Brandon Lipps, deputy undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services at the USDA told the Wall Street Journal at the time.

It is time to protect your family and your assets with Silver & Gold. Contact [email protected], tell them “Sarah sent you” and receive excellent service and the lowest prices guaranteed. Please prepare now.

Now, this same organization is claiming that it wants you to register your vegetable garden so it can place you in a database and put your healthy food source on a map — for your health, of course. You also get a cool sign for your front yard too.

While a handful of folks inside the USDA may have well-meaning intentions behind this program, the behemoth organization’s track record and history clearly indicate that the overwhelming majority of them do not care about your health. Not only do they not care about your health but most of their farm and food budget goes toward subsidizing products that directly harm your health.

So, skepticism over a national garden database run by this organization is entirely warranted. As the world teeters on the verge of nuclear war and economic collapse, remember that in times of war and economic downturns, food is more valuable than gold.
