Will Colombians Get the Change They Crave?

Colombians will elect a new president on June 19, 2022. Gustavo Petro from the Historical Pact and Rodolfo Hernández from the Anti-Corruption Rulers League won the first round, held on May 29.

Both candidates embody anti-establishment alternatives. This is the first time in 20 years that a candidate unrelated to former President Álvaro Uribe (2002–2010) will take office.

On June 5, market research firm Yanhaas revealed that 89 percent of citizens dislike President Iván Duque’s performance, and only 8 percent endorse it. These numbers show that voters seek a political pivot.

Mauricio Jaramillo-Jassir—a political science professor at Rosario University in Bogotá—wrote for the local media outlet Public Reason: “Colombia will have to choose between populism and demagoguery.” For him, Hernández represents populism and Petro the latter.

What Is the Electoral Landscape

On the first ballot, Petro and his vice-presidential candidate Francia Márquez led with 40.23 percent of the votes, accounting for 8.5 million people. Hernández and his vice-presidential candidate Marelen Castillo got 28.15 percent, which accounts for 5.9 million voters.

Federico Gutiérrez, who was one of the favorite candidates according to polls, did not make it to the runoff. Gutiérrez, the former Medellín mayor, got 23.91 percent—5 million votes. During the campaign, Colombians associated Gutiérrez with current president Iván Duque and Uribismo

In a similar vein, Colombians have made their political desire a reality in the 2022 legislative elections. Democratic Center (CD)—Uribe’s political party—got 17 seats in the Senate and 25 in the House, being the fourth political force in Congress. In 2018, Uribismo got more seats than any other party in Congress. They now have 19 seats in the Senate and 32 in the House.

The Political Sentiment among Colombians

Colombians have publicly shown political discontent over the last three years. In 2019 and 2020, Duque faced some of his stiffest challenges during his tenure. The country was home to massive protests, particularly in the largest cities—such as Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali.

In light of potential economic reforms, rioters went to the streets to destabilize the government and push for a range of leftist policies. Others joined them to complain about the privatization of state-run companies such as Ecopetrol and to oppose Duque’s leadership. The violence caused 20 deaths and injured 500 people.

In 2021, Colombia’s main cities witnessed strikes again. However, the epicenter was Cali, where protesters blocked roads and robbed stores. Both constitute a crime according to the country’s penal code

With over 3,200 roads blocked, the protests meant economic losses of around $3.5 billion. According to the National Industry Association (ANDI), protests caused a worse economic impact than the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Valle del Cauca—the province where Cali is located—road blockades hindered at least 84 percent of companies. Rather than reaching consent, the social turmoil worsened the socioeconomic conditions by raising unemployment and disrupting supply chains.

Duque blamed Petro and his followers for the protests by arguing they were destabilization attempts against his administration. Former Finance Minister Mauricio Cárdenas believes the protests helped Petro gain political capital for the presidential election.

— Daniel Pacheco (@danielpacheco) May 22, 2021

Electoral Priorities

According to polling firm Invamer, 70 percent of the people aged between 18 and 25 approved of the 2021 protests. The supporters perceived the protests, despite the violence, as depicting hope, change, and justice. Colombians’ main concerns are insecurity, corruption, and lack of economic opportunity.

Colombians perceive rising insecurity nationwide. In April 2022, the National Statistics Department (DANE) revealed that Colombians feel more unsafe in their neighborhoods than in 2021. The rate of people who felt safe went down from 25.3 to 22.7 percent. The DANE survey also shows that 22.9 percent of residents in Bogotá never leave their homes at night because of insecurity.

Petro has focused on the flaws of the centrist and right-wing leaders of the past two decades. Petro has said, at times, that the Colombian political system is not a democracy. Meanwhile, Freedom House considers Colombia one of the few long-standing democracies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In addition to opposing Uribismo, Hernández has devoted himself to criticizing corruption among the political elite. He claims he has the recipe to avoid impunity, which he applied when he was mayor of the northern Colombian city of Bucaramanga.

Nevertheless, Colombia’s score on the Transparency International corruption perceptions index is its highest (best) since 2012—with 39 out of 100 points in 2021. In 2012, its score was 36.

The Candidates’ Gloomy Background

Petro became mayor of Bogotá in 2012, and Hernández became mayor of Bucaramanga in 2016. However, none of them finished his term, due to legal conflicts.

In Bogotá, Petro delegated trash collection to the city’s sewage company without conducting a proper analysis. As a result, trash flooded the streets of Bogotá, and city officials increased the budget allocated for trash collection.

Alejandro Ordóñez, then Bogota’s prosecutor general, considered Petro’s action “serious misconduct.” After judicial prosecution, Petro was dismissed from his position.

Moreover, Petro has bragged about being a member of the M-19 guerrillas. The M-19 has been inactive since it signed the 1990 Peace Agreement with the Colombian government.

Nevertheless, the urban guerrillas perpetrated numerous crimes, such as kidnapping politicians and businessmen and assaulting police and diplomatic units. The M-19 also took over the Justice Palace in 1985, which houses the nation’s highest court, leaving a toll of nearly 100 deaths.

Petro carried plenty of guns when he was an M-19 member, but he claims he “never fired one.” He also said his job in the M-19 was to organize people in neighborhoods for protests.

In 2018, Senator Paloma Valencia, during a debate in the Senate, showed a video of Petro receiving bundles of money and putting it away in a bag. Valencia said the video was related to Odebrecht and its corruption cases in Colombia, but Petro and his lawyer denied this.

They claimed this happened 14 years before Valencia leaked the video. According to them, it allegedly showed Petro carrying money for Petro’s political party—Human Colombia, which is now a member of his coalition party. Petro gave no further explanation regarding the video.

Regarding Hernández, the Prosecutor General’s Office sanctioned him multiple times when he was the mayor of Bucaramanga. By the end of 2019, Hernández was subject to 34 opened investigation cases due to improper political participation and misconduct. After a sanction for improper political participation while supporting mayoral candidate Juan Cárdenas in a video, Hernández resigned from his post three months before ending his term.

Among those cases, the Prosecutor General’s Office accused Hernández of “improper interest” in the procurement with the company Vitalogic. Although not convicted of any crime yet, Hernández faces fines regarding his behavior while in political positions. The latest one is a fine of around $2,500 due to insults against the former mayor of Floridablanca, Héctor Mantilla.

What Are the Main Candidates’ Proposals

Petro proposes to transition from an extractive to a “productive economy.” His government plan reads: “The new policies will be formulated in pacts between private companies, civil society, and the state.” Petro also proposes to redistribute unproductive lands belonging to big landowners and renegotiate Colombia’s trade agreements.

Hernández aims to encourage Colombia’s agricultural industry too. However, he plans to outline a strategy “to become a cannabis production powerhouse.” Hernández considers extractivism in Colombia as an asset to boost economic development. His plan is “to reduce the obstacles against the extractivist industry.”

Petro has focused on economic development by fighting gender and social inequalities. In the first section, the plan digs into measures for women’s inclusion in politics, society, and the labor market. In addition, the plan advocates for abortion decriminalization, LGBT rights, and the inclusion of historically marginalized population groups in Colombia.

In contrast, Hernández has focused on the fight against corruption and impunity. For this purpose, he proposes to improve the government’s digital platforms and implement an open-government system to encourage citizen participation. The plan’s goal is to reach a “zero-impunity” status.

Both candidates have proposed more decentralized decision-making in the economy, especially towards marginalized regions in the Amazon and the Pacific coast. They also want to make Colombia a climate-change role model in Latin America by promoting clean energy.

PFL 3 results – Harrison vs. Mokhnatkina

Kayla Harrison begins her quests to become three-peat PFL Champion

Ray Cooper III, Anthony Pettis and Rory MacDonald make 2022 season debuts

PFL 3 airs live this Friday, May 6th at 6:00 PM ET on ESPN+, the action continues on ESPN2 at 9:00 PM ET.

The Professional Fighters League wraps up the first half of their 2022 Regular Season with a star-studded card for PFL 3, featuring bouts in the women’s lightweight, welterweight, and lightweight divisions. In the main event, two-time PFL Women’s Lightweight World Champion Kayla Harrison of the United States meets Marina Mokhnatkina of Russia.

The most dominant women’s champion in mixed martial arts today, Harrison came in at 155-pounds for Friday’s main event, as she begins her quest for a third consecutive PFL championship. Harrison has been victorious in all 12 of her professional bouts, and intends to keep it that way at PFL 3. Mokhnatkina, meanwhile, tipped the scales at 154.2-pounds, as she heads into the biggest fight of her MMA career. The six-time combat sambo world champion has won back-to-back bouts, and will look to test Harrison’s dominance.

In the co-main event, two-time PFL Welterweight Champion Hawaii’s Ray “Bradda Boy” Cooper III takes on Brazilian standout Carlos “The Lion” Leal in a welterweight showdown. Cooper came in at 176.4-pounds as he kicks off his campaign for a PFL championship three-peat. Cooper came in 5.4-pounds over the limit and will be deducted one point in the welterweight standings. He will also be unable to earn points no matter the outcome of the bout. Leal, meanwhile, weighed-in at 169.6-pounds for his PFL Regular Season debut. The former LFA welterweight champion was victorious in both his appearances on the 2022 PFL Challenger Series, which was enough to earn him a spot in the 2022 PFL Regular Season. Leal will bank a minimum of three points in the welterweight division standings.

Also on the card, former UFC champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis of the United States takes on Myles “Magic” Price of Ireland. Pettis came in at 155.4-pounds, while Price weighed 154.8-pounds.

Former Bellator champion Rory “The Red King” MacDonald of Canada meets Brett “Fudoshin” Cooper of the United States. MacDonald weighed-in at 171-pounds, while Cooper came in at 169.8-pounds.

Women’s Lightweight Genah Fabian of New Zealand weighed in at 160.8-pounds, 4.8-pounds over the division limit, for her showdown with Canadian Julia Budd. Fabian, like Cooper III, will be docked one point and will be unable to earn points no matter the outcome of the bout. Budd is guaranteed three points in the standings and can earn bonus points if she is able to finish the Kiwi inside the distance.

Magomed Magomedkerimov, the 2018 PFL Welterweight World Champion, was forced out of his matchup with Joao Zeferino due to visa issues. 2022 PFL Challenger Series alum Dilano Taylor will step in to duel with Zeferino. Taylor weighed-in at 170.6-pounds while Zeferino hit 170.8 on the scale.

Diego Pacheco-Jack Cullen Fight Set For March 11 DAZN Show Featuring Callum Smith – Boxing News

One of the sport’s hottest prospects will travel abroad for his next step up in competition.

BoxingScene.com has confirmed that unbeaten super middleweight Diego Pacheco and Jack Cullen are set for a bout that will land on a March 11 DAZN show from M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England. The crossroads clash will come in supporting capacity to local hero Callum Smith (29-1, 21KOs), a former WBA super middleweight champ and current WBC light heavyweight mandatory challenger who will headline versus a yet-to-be-named opponent.

No Smoke Boxing’s Darshan Desai was the first to break the news of the super middleweight matchup.

Pacheco (17-0, 14KOs) will enter the fight on the heels of a fantastic 2022 campaign that saw the 21-year-old South Central Los Angeles native score four knockouts in as many fights on the year. The bout also continues a pattern of Pacheco fighting every three months dating back to his second-round knockout of Genc ‘The Sexy Albanian’ Pllana last March 5 in San Diego, California.

In his most recent start, Pacheco—a stablemate of unbeaten interim WBC super middleweight titlist and former two-time full titleholder David Benavidez—scored a second-round knockout of Adrian Luna last December 3 in Glendale, Arizona. All seventeen pro fights to date have taken place in North America but the red-hot prospect will now head to the UK as he aims to become a 168-pound contender.

Cullen (21-3-1, 9KOs) has emerged as a crowd favorite in his time spent as an undercard attraction on the domestic level.

The super middleweight gatekeeper from Little Lever, England—known as ‘Little Lever’s Meat Cleaver’—showed mettle in an eventual eighth-round stoppage loss to unbeaten prospect Felix Cash in their November 2019 thriller. Cullen is 4-1-1 since that night, the lone defeat coming in a sixth-round stoppage to unbeaten Kevin Lele Sadjo on a December DAZN 2021 show in Manchester, England.

In his most impressive win to date, Cullen earned a ten-round, unanimous decision over former title challenger Avni Yildirim in July 2021. The 29-year-old Brit was last seen in an eight-round victory over Vladimir Belujsky last April 16 in Manchester. Cullen will endure an eleven-month inactive stretch come fight night, in part attributed to a planned domestic title fight with Mark Heffron on the September 24 Joe Joyce-Joseph Parker undercard that eventually fell through.

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn previously told BoxingScene.com of the company’s intention to match Smith “with a world-ranked top fifteen fighter in Liverpool in March.”

The most ambitious plans called for a terrific domestic showdown with Joshua Buatsi (16-0, 13KOs), a 2016 Olympic Bronze medalist for Great Britain and current unbeaten light heavyweight contender. However, such a bout remains unlikely without a major belt at stake, with both on the doorstep of light heavyweight title contention.

Could continued US support for Ukraine be hampered by the Republicans? | DW News

So far, the United States has been the single biggest single donor of military aid to Ukraine – sending nearly 24 billion dollars worth of military equipment to help fight the Russian invasion.
But there are concerns that the Republican Party, which now controls Congress, could limit future US support.
Republicans are pushing for more oversight in government spending – suggesting that future funding might not be as forthcoming as it once was.

Quinta da Pacheca: Top of its Class – Advinetures.ca

A beautiful winery to visit.

Portugual’s Douro Valley has a storied wine history that dates back centuries, most notably from the time of its demarcation as a region in 1756. One of the original properties within that demarcation is Quinta da Pacheca which we were lucky enough to visit just a few short months ago.

The name ‘Pacheca’ is derived from Lady Mariana Pacheco Perreira who was the property owner in 1738 according to a document of that same year.

The Pacheca name has a long history.

Prior to that, the property is referenced as far back as 1551 where it was a vineyard belonging to the Monasteries of Salzedas and St. João de Tarouca. It is a stunning estate (something we’d come to expect with every winery in the region) that covers approximately 75 hectares in the lower Douro, in the village of Cambres.

This renowned historical property began to embrace modernization and increased production when it was purchased by D. José Freire de Serpa Pimentel at the turn of the 20th Century.

The stone Lagars at Pacheca.

Back then, modernization meant the construction of 8 granite stone tanks where some of Pacheca’s red wines are still vinified today as part of a limited production offering. It also meant replanting the vineyards into single-variety-blocks which was practically unheard of at the time.

Quinta da Pacheca was one of the first wineries in the region to bottle DOC (denominação de origem controlada) wines under its own brand and in 1977, and, under the guidance of D. Eduardo Mendia Freire de Serpa Pimentel, was the first in Portugal to produce white wines from Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.

In the mid 1990’s, Pacheca began focusing on enotourism by offering guided tours and culinary classes (more on that a little later), along with the construction of the Wine House Hotel which opened in 2009 and features a handful of ‘rooms’ in the vineyard built in the shape of wine barrels.

The wine barrel rooms exist..

Yes, those wine barrel rooms you’ve seen on social media actually exist and aren’t just ‘instagrammable’, they’re a brilliant way of drawing wine enthusiasts for a truly unique wine stay.

Today the Quinta is owned by Paulo Pereira and Maria do Céu Gonçalves who purchased it in 2012 but the Serpa Pimentel family is still involved, including Maria Serpa Pimentel who continues on as the estate winemaker.

Now back to those cooking classes…

So much of culture is historically rooted around the dinner table. It is where families and friends come together as one. Cooking is one of the main forms of expressing and identifying a culture and good food and good wine have gone together since the beginning of time.

Chef Marcos + new friends.

For us, there is no better, and no more enjoyable way to immerse yourself in a local culture than by enjoying the pleasures of the local table, with the locals.

At Pacheca, we got a first-class cooking demonstration from Chef Marcos who was not only incredibly talented but had a warmth and passion for cooking that is beyond infectious. Despite the fact he was cooking that evening for a wedding of about 300 guests, he happily and energetically guided us through a culinary experience that included fresh local octopus, traditional croquettes and a crème brulée that was caramelized with what can best be described as a 19th century iron.

Tasting through Pacheca’s Vintage port & 40 yr old Tawny.

As Chef Marcos took us through the cooking class, Ricardo dos Santos (Tasting Room & Direct Sales Manager) provided a lineup of Pacheca wines that represented the spectrum of their wines, both still and Port. We enjoyed the 2020 Superior Branco, the 2019 Douro Tinto, the 2017 Lagar no. 1 Reserva, the 2018 Vintage Port, their Ruby Reserve Port, the 20-year-old Tawny Port and 40-year-old Tawny Port.

To finish with such a splendid wine and food pairing experience was a truly fitting end to our time in the Douro Valley.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Branco Grande Reserva & 2017 Grande Reserva Touriga Nacional

2020 Pacheca Branco Grande Reserva

The round and fruity Branco Grande Reserva shows the fresh acidity that is a Duoro Valley signature. Made from a blend of Viosinho and Rabigato, this wine is raised in 500 litre barrels made of oak and acacia after the initial fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Medium body with slightly fresh acidity, there are notes of melon that layer in with the citrus and mineral to create a nicely balanced wine that charms with its simplicity and refreshing characteristics.

Very Good

2017 Pacheca Grande Reserva Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is the main grape of the Duoro Valley and the grapes for this wine come from a 32 year old plot overlooking the river at 140 metres of elevation. Notes of plum and white pepper are delivered with a soft, smooth mouthfeel that shows polish and class. Medium body and medium minus tannin, this is a wine designed to deliver immediate pleasure. 18 months in French oak adds texture and a bit of spice.

Very Good+

2017 Pacheca Lagar No 1 Reserva

2017 Lagar No. 1 Reserva

The beautiful dark purple colour informs you that this will be a wine that will impress. There is a lovely nose that evokes dark fruits such as blackberries and  black cherries with hints of baking spice. On the plate the body is full with medium plus tannin. Flavours of raspberry and blueberry gain added complexity from the spice notes and bitter chocolate. A serious wine that will reward a bit more time in the cellar. Very complex.

2018  Pacheca Vintage Port

A delicious and deeply coloured vintage port that was nearly opaque in our glasses. The palate comes across as very ripe with blueberry and blackberry flavours delivered with intensity. Vanilla and clove spices add complexity and accentuate the sweetness. There is both power and elegance to this wine. Charming today, it will no doubt evolve in cool cellars for decades to come.
