Wise: Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2022 Mock Draft – Steelers Depot

Somehow the months of all-star games, watching tape, looking at combine metrics, tracking interviews, pro-day visits, and everything in between have come down to this. There’s officially less than one week left until the NFL draft where we all get to find out who will dawn the black and gold for years to come.

As is the Steelers’ way in Kevin Colbert’s last hoo-rah, the team filled up just about every hole on this roster in some way shape, or form this offseason. Year after year they try to eliminate as many areas of need as possible to allow them to be relatively wide open when it comes to choosing players in the draft. With the latest re-signing of Terrell Edmunds, the team has filled up their last true hole in their 22 starting positions.

While it allows them to be relatively free and take more of a ‘best player available’ approach, I still wanted to address some positions in my mock draft that I believe the Steelers front office will be looking to add some depth to. It’s important to note that, this mock is what I think the Steelers will do, not what I would necessarily do if I had the keys.

I want to personally thank each and every one of you for reading and choosing Steelers Depot to satisfy your pre-draft season hunger.

Make sure you let me know what you think of the picks below in the comments!

ROUND 1 (#20 OVERALL) — DESMOND RIDDER/QB/CINCINNATI — 6033, 211 LBS.

Analysis: We all weren’t gifted with a layup this year as many of us were able to connect the dots between Najee Harris and the Steelers prior to the draft last season. While there seems like there is similar interest between Malik Willis and the Pittsburgh organization, I’m not entirely sure that he’ll fall enough for the Steelers to feel comfortable going up to get him. Therefore, I see them being able to sit back, not pilfering their 2023 draft picks for the next GM’s first draft, and picking another quarterback they have heavy interest in, Desmond Ridder.

Ridder has been described as “a grown-a** man” by some NFL execs around the league. Long story short, he’s already a father, a proven leader, and was able to turn Cincinnati into a winning program for four-straight years. It’s easy to see that the Steelers’ front office could feel comfortable handing him the keys to the franchise.

Ridder isn’t without his faults as it’s been well documented that he can be inconsistent with his accuracy. While it may not be wise to think it all can be fixed, Ridder acts like a professional with his craft and the arrow has always been pointing up through his career. There was no regression on a year-to-year basis, and he played some of his best ball down the stretch. Hopefully, that arrow can continue to point up in Pittsburgh.

Others Considered: Matt Corral QB – Ole Miss, Jordan Davis DL – Georgia, Lewis Cine, S, Georgia

ROUND 2 (#52 OVERALL) — SKYY MOORE/WR/WESTERN MICHIGAN — 5095, 195 LBS.

Analysis: While most holes have been filled on this roster, the Steelers’ slot receiver spot is one of the biggest question marks as they head into the season. There wasn’t a ton of noted Steelers interest in Skyy Moore pre-draft, but it may not have been needed as Mike Tomlin is well-acquainted with Moore as he was Tomlin’s son’s quarterback in high school at Shady-Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Moore would fit perfectly into this Pittsburgh receiver’s room as there isn’t really anyone that fits his frame and skill set. His quick-twitch route running combined with his toughness to catch over the middle of the field would suit him well to get on the field immediately in Pittsburgh. The Steelers also love their versatility with their guys, Moore could easily be shifted inside and out, as needed, as he has enough route-running ability and speed to be able to play all receiver spots in this offense.

Others Considered: George Pickens WR – Georgia, DeMarvin Leal, DL, Texas A&M, Jaquan Brisker S – Penn State

ROUND 3 (#84 OVERALL)— NICK CROSS/S/MARYLAND — 6001, 212 LBS.

Analysis: Nick Cross presents our second Mike Tomlin connection that I see coming true come draft day. Cross was Tomlin’s son’s roommate during his time at the University of Maryland. If you have ever been to college and shared a room with someone, there’s truly no better way to learn about a person. Assuming Cross passed that test, he’s not too bad of a prospect either.

He fits exactly what the Steelers look for in the safety position, as outlined by Alex Kozora’s ‘What The Steelers Look For’ series.  Cross could use the time on the roster and be groomed while they have at least one more year of Terrell Edmunds’services at strong safety. His downhill, physical style suits him well in the strong safety position.

Others Considered: Danny Gray WR – SMU, Myjai Sanders EDGE – Cincinnati, Coby Bryant CB – Cincinnati

ROUND 4 (#138 OVERALL) — MAX MITCHELL/OT/Louisiana — 6062, 307 LBS.

Analysis: While the Steelers just spent a ton of money on the offensive line during free agency, the cupboard is relatively bare in terms of depth at the tackle position. With the release of Zach Banner, the team is left with the likes of Joe Haeg and Chaz Green.

A developmental tackle out of Louisiana and former teammate of Kevin Dotson, Max Mitchell could challenge for the Steelers swing-tackle position on day one. He was moved back and forth from left and right tackle during his time with the Rajun’ Cajuns, sometimes even in the middle of drives, so the moving will not affect him. That versatility is all so important when dressing linemen on game day. Ideally, he’s best as a right tackle that you could see possibly pushing Chukwuma Okorafor off the roster down the road if he develops.

Others Considered: Bryon Cook S – Cincinnati, Alontae Taylor DB – Tennessee, Justyn Ross WR – Clemson

ROUND 6 (#208 OVERALL) — NEIL FARRELL JR./DL/LSU — 6041, 330 LBS.

Analysis: With Tyson Alualu coming off of injury and likely in his last year in the NFL the Steelers’ defensive tackle depth is almost non-existent. You’d like to assume they found a long-term diamond in the rough in Montravius Adams, but only time will tell if he was only a flash in the pan. The twins of Khalil and Carlos Davis are not anywhere near locks to make the roster either.

Neil Farrell Jr. could add some new blood into the defensive line room. During his time at the Senior Bowl, he was named the top defensive lineman of the week for the American Team. Farrell Jr. is more of a two-down gap plugger, that could significantly help with a run defense that greatly struggled in 2021. His 330+ pound frame commands double teams and could help free up the off-ball linebackers in Pittsburgh.

Others Considered: Ty Chandler RB – UNC, Jalen Nailor WR – Michigan State, Joey Blount S – Virginia

ROUND 7 (#225 OVERALL) — ISIAH PACHECO/RB/RUTGERS — 5103, 216 LBS.

Analysis: The Steelers have drafted a running back every year in the draft dating back to 2017. Looking at their current depth chart of Najee Harris, Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland Jr., and Trey Edmunds, unfortunately, it looks like they may be in store for another running back to be injected into this roster.

Isaih Pacheco was tied for the fastest timed 40-yard dash (4.37) by a running back at the 2022 NFL Combine. While he obviously has speed, he’s ready to smack you in the mouth as well. His pass protection is NFL-ready and when you turn on his tape, his snap to snap effort is hard to be matched, as he plays every play like it’s his last. He could be a hidden gem due to playing behind the lame Rutgers offensive line.

Others Considered: Connor Heyward, TE/FB, Michigan State, Quentin Lake S – UCLA, Tariq Castro-Fields CB – Penn State

ROUND 7 (#241 OVERALL) —ALI FAYAD/EDGE/WESTERN MICHIGAN — 6020, 248 LBS.

Analysis: I think the Steelers’ outside linebacker depth may be one of the biggest needs on this team, so I was upset that we’re all the way down to the seventh round before we address it, but here we are. We go back to the Steelers well of the MAC to hopefully find another OLB that they can mold under the watchful eyes of Brian Flores.

Ali Fayad was the 2021 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, who was able to rack up 13 sacks and 17.5 TFLs during his final year with the Broncos. He was able to win in all types of ways in MAC, whether he was running around, through, or spinning around tackles, he could find his way to the quarterbacks. He does a fair job of setting the edge against the run.

Others Considered: Decobie Durant CB – South Carolina St., Mark Robinson LB – Ole Miss, Eric Johnson DL – Missouri State

Despite border gridlock, Texas won’t end extra inspections

By Paul J. Weber and Acacia Coronado | Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday defied mounting pressure to immediately end truck inspections that have gridlocked the U.S.-Mexico border for days, saying that despite miles-long backups and spoiled produce, he would not rescind his new order at all bridges until he gets more assurances of security.

The two-term Republican said he was only ending inspections at one international bridge after announcing what he described as an agreement for more enhanced security with Nuevo Leon Gov. Samuel García, whose Mexican state is across the border from Laredo.

But that would not bring relief to idling truckers stacked up elsewhere along Texas’ 1,200-mile border, including in cities where backups have lasted for more than 12 hours and frustrated truckers have blocked bridges in protest. That includes the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, which has been effectively closed since Monday by trucker protests.

Abbott said he hoped officials in the three other Mexican states that border Texas would follow Nuevo Leon and also promise more security.

“I understand the concerns that businesses have trying to move product across the border,” Abbott said in Laredo, where he was joined by García. “But I also know well the frustration of my fellow Texans and my fellow Americans caused by the Biden administration not securing our border.”

Pressure on Abbott has come even from allies of the two-term governor.

The Texas Trucking Association, which has endorsed Abbott for reelection, said that the current situation “cannot be sustained” as the delays postponed deliveries and threatened to empty store shelves.

The Mexican governors of Coahuila and Tamaulipas, which both border Texas, also sent Abbott a letter calling the inspections overzealous and said they are “creating havoc and economic pain” on both sides of the border.

Mexico’s federal government has said Abbott’s order is causing “serious damage” to trade, and that cross-border traffic had plummeted to a third of normal levels. On Wednesday, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki called Abbott’s order “unnecessary and redundant.”

The gridlock is the fallout of an initiative that Abbott says is needed to curb human trafficking and the flow of drugs. Abbott ordered the inspections as part of “unprecedented actions” he promised in response to the Biden administration winding down a public health law that has limited asylum-seekers in the name of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

But critics question how the inspections are meeting Abbott’s objective, while business owners and experts complain of financial losses and warn U.S. grocery shoppers could notice shortages as soon as this week.

Frustration is also spreading within members of Abbott’s own party: Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, a Republican, called the inspections a “catastrophic policy” that is forcing some trucks to reroute hundreds of miles to Arizona.

“I do describe it as a crisis, because this is not the normal way of doing business,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez, whose county includes the bridge in Pharr. “You’re talking about billions of dollars. When you stop that process, I mean, there are many, many, many, many people that are affected.”

The shutdowns and slowdowns have set off some of widest backlash to date of Abbott’s multibillion-dollar border operation, which the two-term governor has made the cornerstone of his administration. Texas has thousands of state troopers and National Guard members on the border and has converted prisons into jails for migrants arrested on state trespassing charges.

The disruptions at some of the world’s busiest international trade ports could pose economic and political threats to Abbott, who is seeking a third term in November. Democrat Beto O’Rourke, the former presidential candidate who is running against Abbott, said during a stop in Pharr on Tuesday that the inspections were doing nothing to halt the flow of migrants and were worsening supply chain issues.

An estimated 3,000 trucks cross the Pharr bridge on a normal day, according to the National Freight Transportation Chamber. The bridge is the largest land port for produce entering the U.S.
Mexico supplies about two-thirds of the produce sold in Texas.

The additional inspections are conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety, which said that as of Monday, it had inspected more than 3,400 commercial vehicles and placed more than 800 “out of service” for violations that included defective brakes, tires and lighting. It made no mention of whether the inspections turned up migrants or drugs.

Jerry Pacheco, executive director of the International Business Accelerator and president of the Border Industrial Association, said the protests were costing businesses millions of dollars a day.

“It’s going to affect all of us, all of us in the United States. Your car parts are going to be delivered late, your computer — if you ordered a Dell or HP tablet, those are going to be disrupted.”

National Politics |

Anderson said consumers would likely begin noticing the effects before the end of this week.

“Either prices are going to spike or shelves are going to be low,” he said.

Associated Press reporters Susan Montoya Bryan in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Mark Stevenson in Mexico City contributed to this report.

Police videos don’t always tell the whole story

In response to calls for greater police accountability, California passed laws to make police misconduct records more accessible to the public and placed the state Attorney General’s office in charge of investigating police killings of unarmed civilians.

Following the 2018 Sacramento police shooting of Stephon Clark, who was unarmed, lawmakers now require law enforcement agencies to release body camera footage within 45 days of any incident when an officer fires a gun or uses deadly force.

But as CalMatters’ criminal justice reporter Nigel Duara writes, agencies heavily edit these videos in ways that can shape public opinion before all facts of the case are known.

Carried out by in-house production teams or private contractors, edits of full, raw video can include highlighting or circling objects in a person’s hand, slowing down footage at key moments, erasing or failing to transcribe audio, or failing to make clear which officers fired their gun, Nigel reports.

At times, the public and the media rely on these edited videos because they are the only documentation of a deadly police encounter available. As a result, these videos can hold a lot of sway.

  • Michele Hanisee, president of the Los Angeles Association of Deputy District Attorneys: “While transparency promotes public confidence in the conduct of law enforcement, the pre-trial release of evidence has the potential to influence the testimony of witnesses, create bias in potential jurors, or create an environment that could justify a change in venue.”

Ken Pritchett, who works at one such private contractor company that edits videos for police, has pushed back against departments when police press releases contradict what is on video. For example, when a release states that police “immediately rendered first aid to a person they shot,” when there was actually a delay in administering help.

But he said he hopes his videos ultimately help to dispel any false narratives that might arise from these fatal incidents.

  • Pritchett: “Virtually every article we’ve seen about what we do, somebody accuses us of spinning for the police department, but I have yet to ever see an example put forward that shows that we’re spinning anything. And if they did, tell me, for God’s sakes. My entire goal is to make these straight, spin-free.”

Legislative staff get a raise

From state Capitol reporter Sameea Kamal:

As the California Legislature returns today from its week-long spring break, some of its staffers will be getting more pay.

The state Senate granted an across-the-board, 7.5% cost-of-living adjustment to more than 800staffers on April 1 — part of an effort to recruit and retain staff amidst a tight job market and last year’s high legislative turnover. That follows a 5% raise last July, when Assembly staffalso received a 7.5% increase.

  • Erika Contreras, secretary of the Senate: “With inflation driving up the cost of consumer goods and salaries being competitive elsewhere, it’s important to us as an employer that we compensate our staff fairly.”

A total cost for the raises was not available Friday. As of last October, about 20% of full-time legislative staff made more than $120,000, double the average salary in California.

The across-the-board increase is in contrast to prior adjustments, such as in 2015, when 4% raises were given to Senate staff who made less than $150,000 a year, 2% for those who made between $150,000 and $178,000 and 1% for those with salaries above that.

Contreras said across-the-board increases were important to be more competitive as an employer and keep up with inflation. She added that factors such as future budgets and the potential deficit were taken into account.

  • Contreras: “At the end of the day, this was a needed investment, and is intended to help the Senate retain institutional knowledge and recruit new talent. People have so many options for employment — we want to find and keep people who can build long-term careers with us.”

The raises come during the latest effort to unionize legislative staff. A representative of the effort said more money is always welcome — as is the improved health insurance Senate staff received last year. But the raisedoesn’t address other job quality issues, such as lack of overtime pay.

Protecting students with debt

From CalMatters higher education reporter Mikhail Zinshteyn:

While the $1.6 trillion in federal student loan debt dominates the headlines, a different, tinier kind of debt can also have huge consequences for California students. Campuses across the state warn students that they may block them from enrolling in classes or place them with debt collection agencies if they owe money to the campus directly.

Proposed legislation being unveiled today — Assembly Bill 1160 by Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco, a Democrat from Downey — would bar any California college, private or public, from denying a student a degree or certificate because that student owes campus debt. Nor could schools block those students from enrolling in classes.  The bill also would ban schools from putting students in collections or asking the state tax agency to seize students’ tax refunds

One estimate is that 750,000 California college students accrued institutional debt between 2020 and 2022 and collectively owe $390 million. Much of that is from federal Pell grants low-income students must repay because they unexpectedly dropped out of school.

Student government groups of the University of California and California State University have made the issue a priority and are cosponsors of the bill.

  • Alex Niles, president of UC Student Association: The practice is “exacerbating equity gaps at UC. It’s a pretty easy thing to just remove that. Like, relatively small amounts of debt should not have such outsized consequences for students’ ability to graduate or to continue their education.”

Pacheco, student groups and UC regents Marlenee Blas will hold a press conference debuting the bill today. (Former Assembly speaker John A. Pérez backed out of the event.) Pacheco’s office wouldn’t say whether any campuses have submitted opposition to the bill. “We are currently in communication with the segments regarding this proposal,” wrote Kierra Paul, Pacheco’s legislative director.

The bill is to get its first hearing April 18 in the Assembly’s higher education committee.

What does abortion pill ruling mean for CA?

“Deplorable,” “unconscionable,” “extremist.” Those were some of the strong words from California’s Democratic leaders in response to the ruling late Friday suspending federal approval of the abortion medication mifepristone.

After last year’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling ending federal constitutional protections for abortion rights, California Democrats passed a raft of new laws, set aside money for out-of-state women coming here for reproductive health care and persuaded voters to protect abortion access in the state constitution

But this time their hands may be tied, as CalMatters’ health care reporter Kristen Hwang explains. A federal judge in Texas suspended the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, which for more than 20 years has been approved as the first of a two-drug regimen for medical abortions. The Biden administration is challenging the decision, but pharmacies could pull the drug while the case goes through appeal.

At the same time, a district judge in Washington state issued a ruling in a separate case that prohibits the FDA from making changes to the drug’s availability. With two contradictory rulings, experts say this legal gray area is enough to cause providers to stop distributing the drug. And because the Texas ruling challenges the FDA’s federal authority, there’s not much California and other states can do to push back in the meantime, Kristen reports

Nevertheless Gov. Gavin Newsom doubled down on the state’s commitment to abortion access, saying in a statement that “abortion is still legal and accessible here in California.”

In other reproductive health news, Sacramento City Council approved “quiet zones” around health care facilities last week. The new noise ordinance would disallow the use of microphones, megaphones and other sound amplifiers within 100 feet of a facility. The measure aims to discourage the harassment of patients seeking abortion treatment.

But harassment can go beyond protesting outside facility walls. On Thursday, for example, the Justice Department announced that a Kern County man has been charged with phoning in death threats to Planned Parenthood offices in California. If convicted, the man could face as much as five years in federal prison.

CalMatters Commentary

CalMatters columnist Dan Walters: Nearly a third of California’s public school students are chronically absent, but the crisis is not getting the attention it deserves.

A law aiming to curb pay-to-play influence in local government could make it harder for diverse candidates to be competitive and enable dark money from special interests, argues Garrett Gatewood, a Rancho Cordova City Council member.

ASOR GOAT Madness – Final Four

We are halfway through ASOR GOAT Madness!

In this single-elimination bracket challenge, we’ve matched up sixteen of the greatest Liberty Basketball players of all-time. After two opening rounds, we are down to the final four players as the top four seeds all advanced to the semifinal round. Fans will be able to vote on each matchup on our social media pages and ultimately decide who is Liberty Basketball’s GOAT! Voting will be tallied from our Twitter account as well as our Instagram and Facebook stories.

In order to get you prepared to vote, here’s a preview of all of our final four matchups.

Darius McGhee vs Larry Blair

The number one overall seed cruised through the first two rounds, defeating former teammates Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz and Scottie James. This sets up a final four matchup of two of the most prolific scorers in program history. The all-time leading scorer in Liberty history won three ASUN Player of the Year awards becoming the only Flame to win three Division 1 conference player of the year honors. McGhee is also the ASUN conference’s all-time scorer and three-point leader, along with being Liberty’s all-time three-point leader. McGhee became only the second player in program history to be named an honorable mention All-American at the DI level this past season and tied Steph Curry for the most three-pointers made in an NCAA DI single season with 162. McGhee is Liberty’s most winningest player and also won three ASUN Championships and an ASUN tournament MVP while on the Mountain. McGhee also played in two NCAA tournaments with the Flames and scored a team-high 15 points against Virginia Tech as a true freshman in Liberty’s only round of 32 appearance in 2019.

Blair defeated the 13th seed Steve Isaacs in the first round, before narrowly avoiding an upset versus Lovell Cabbil in the quarterfinals to advance to the final four setting up a matchup with Darius McGhee. Blair is second to only Darius McGhee on the Division I all-time scoring list and is third all-time. Blair won the Big South freshman of the year award and would earn a spot on the first or second team all-conference in all four seasons on the court for Liberty, making the first team on three occasions. Blair was also named VaSID first-team all-state once and VaSID second-team all-state once. Blair also led the Flames to a Big South Championship and an NCAA Tournament bid during the 2004 season.

Caleb Homesley vs Peter Aluma

Homesley defeated former teammate Elijah Cuffee and 7th seed Jesse Sanders to gain his spot in the final four. The 2nd seed in our bracket starred on the best teams in Liberty basketball history and is currently ranked No. 12 on the school’s career scoring list, No. 8 in career rebounds, and No. 15 in career assists. He carried Liberty to its first and only NCAA Tournament win over Mississippi State in 2019 with 30 points. Homesley’s list of achievements include, being named ASUN Player of the Year, ASUN Tournament MVP, to the ASUN all-tournament team twice, the ASUN first-team twice, the VaSID first-team in 2020, and a Lou Henson and Lute Olson All-American in 2020.

#3 seed Peter Aluma arguably had to toughest path to the final four, narrowly defeating Seth Curry in the first round and then 6th seed Karl Hess in the second round. Aluma was a dominant force for the Flames during his time on the Mountain. He currently ranks No. 7 on the career scoring list and No. 9 in rebounding. He’s the only Flame to be named to a conference all-tournament team in three different seasons, while also being named first-team all-conference in the Big South twice and to the second-team once. Aluma is also the only player in program history to be named conference tournament MVP multiple times and was named to first-team VaSID all-state multiple times. Aluma was a key player on the 1994 Big South Championship and NCAA Tournament team.
