Investigation Continues Into I-880 Shooting That Killed 5-Year-Old Girl – NBC Bay Area

The investigation continued Monday into the deadly shooting of a 5-year-old girl on Interstate 880 in Fremont Saturday night.

Saturday night’s shooting happened on southbound I-880 near the Fremont-Milpitas border. There is a possible connection between that shooting and another one that took place in Fremont minutes before. The California Highway Patrol is still trying to establish a connection between the two shootings.

The freeway shooting took the life of 5-year-old Eliyanah Crisostomo of Santa Clara as she and her family were driving home from a dinner party in Fremont.

Fremont police responded to a non-fatal shooting that was reported near an apartment complex on Fremont Boulevard shortly before the freeway shooting.

A witness at the Fremont Boulevard shooting reported seeing someone in a red car firing a shot at someone near the apartment complex and saw the person who was targeted flee the scene unhurt.

The witness reported the license plate number of the red car, carrying three passengers, that sped away. Fremont police put out an alert and, due to the time and proximity of the freeway shooting, included the possibility that the cases and people involved might be related.

The license plate information led to Santa Cruz police stopping and catching three young men who police say were spotted tossing a gun out of a window. Santa Cruz police posted on social media about the stop, including the possibility the three young men might be connected to the freeway shooting.

The CHP, the lead investigating agency in the freeway shooting, said it felt that post was misleading since, at this point, the young men in custody are suspected only in the non-fatal shooting on Fremont Boulevard, not the freeway shooting. The CHP said it needs more information on the freeway shooting and wants the public focused on that.

“What we’re looking for right now is we’re looking for the public to help us with any information that they have that will lead to further evidence gathering,” CHP Lt. Shawna Pacheco said. “They can do that by sending us video, any eyewitness accounts and they can call us at our tip line at 707-917-4491.”

The CHP and Fremont police said they can’t comment on any evidence at the crime scene, including whether bullets were recovered.

The investigation continued Monday into the deadly shooting of a 5-year-old girl on Interstate 880 in Fremont Saturday night. Robert Handa reports.

Meanwhile, the family of the 5-year-old is mourning her death. A woman named Ashley, who said she is Crisostomo’s mother’s best friend said she was like family to her.

“My first text was, ‘Eliyanah was shot on the freeway and she’s going to die,'” she said.

Ashley said Eliyanah was supposed to turn 6 on April 21.

“She would tell her mom, ‘I want to be a doctor so I could take care of my grandma, I want to take care of you guys when you get older,'” said Ashley.

Instead, they’re raising funds and organizing a funeral service.

“Eliyanah was a great kid and this shouldn’t have happened to her, she loved life, everybody was her friend, she loved to laugh, smile and hang out with her family,” said Ashley.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan called Eliyanah’s death a parent’s worst nightmare and took a stand to prevent these kinds of tragedies.

“I want to express my deepest condolences to the loved ones of Eliyanah,” he said. “Beyond increasing staffing for our police department, we need to give our officers the tools they need to enforce safety on our roadways, automatic license plate readers.”

Quarterly Review: Black Helium, Seismic, These Beasts, Ajeeb, OAK, Ultra Void, Aktopasa, Troll Teeth, Finis Hominis, Space Shepherds

If you work in an office, or you ever have, or you’ve ever spoken to someone who has or does or whatever — which is everybody, is what I’m saying — then you’ll probably have a good idea of why I cringe at saying “happy Friday” as though the end of a workweek’s slog is a holiday even with the next week peering just over the horizon beyond the next 48 hours of not-your-boss time. Nonetheless, we’re at the end of this week, hitting 50 records covered in this Quarterly Review, and while I’ll spend a decent portion of the upcoming weekend working on wrapping it up on Monday and Tuesday, I’m grateful for the ability to breathe a bit in doing that more than I have throughout this week.

I’ll say as much in closing out the week as well, but thanks for reading. As always, I hope you enjoy.

Quarterly Review #41-50:

Black Helium, UM

It’s just too cool for the planet. Earth needs to step up its game if it wants to be able handle what London’s Black Helium are dishing out across their five-song third record, UM, from the sprawl and heavy hippie rock of “Another Heaven” to the utter doom that rises to prominence in that 12-minute-ish cut and the oblivion-bound boogie, blowout, and bonfire that is 15:47 closer “The Keys to Red Skeleton’s House (Open the Door)” on the other end, never mind the u-shaped kosmiche march of “I Saw God,” the shorter, stranger, organ-led centerpiece “Dungeon Head” or the motorik “Summer of Hair” that’s so teeth-grindingly tense by the time it’s done you can feel it in your toes. These are but glimpses of the substance that comprises the 45-minute out-there-out-there-out-there stretch of UM, which by the way is also a party? And you’re invited? I think? Yeah, you can go, but the rest of these fools gotta get right if they want to hang with the likes of “I Saw God,” because Black Helium do it weird for the weirdos and the planet might be round but that duddn’t mean it’s not also square. Good thing Black Helium remembered to bring the launch codes. Fire it up. We’re outta here and off to better, trippier, meltier places. Fortunately they’re able to steer the ship as well as set its controls to the heart of the sun.

Seismic, The Time Machine

A demo recording of a single, 29-minute track that’s slated to appear on Seismic‘s debut full-length based around the works of H.G. Wells sometime later this year — yeah, it’s safe to say there’s a bit of context that goes along with understanding where the Philadelphia instrumentalist trio/live-foursome are coming from on “The Time Machine.” Nonetheless, the reach of the song itself — which moves from its hypnotic beginning at about five minutes in to a solo-topped stretch that then gives over to thud-thud-thud pounding heft before embarking on an adventure 30,000 leagues under the drone, only to rise and riff again, doom. the. fuck. on., and recede to minimalist meditation before resolving in mystique-bent distortion and lumber — is significant, and more than enough to stand on its own considering that in this apparently-demo version, its sound is grippingly full. As to what else might be in store for the above-mentioned LP or when it might land, I have no idea and won’t speculate — I’m just going by what they say about it — but I know enough at this point in my life to understand that when a band comes along and hits you with a half-hour sledgehammering to the frontal cortex as a sign of things to come, it’s going to be worth keeping track of what they do next. If you haven’t heard “The Time Machine” yet, consider this a heads up to their heads up.

These Beasts, Cares, Wills, Wants

Something of an awaited first long-player from Chicago’s These Beasts, who crush the Sanford Parker-produced Cares, Wills, Wants with modern edge and fluidity moving between heavier rock and sludge metal, the three-piece of guitarist/vocalist Chris Roo, bassist/vocalist Todd Fabian and drummer Keith Anderson scratching a similar itch in intensity and aggression as did L.A. sludgecore pummelers -(16)- late last year, but with their own shimmer in the guitar on “Nervous Fingers,” post-Baroness melody in “Cocaine Footprints,” and tonal heft worthy of Floor on the likes of “Blind Eyes” and the more purely caustic noise rock of “Ten Dollars and Zero Effort.” “Code Name” dizzies at the outset, while “Trap Door” closes and tops out at over seven minutes, perhaps taking its title from the moment when, as it enters its final minute, the bottom drops out and the listener is eaten alive. Beautifully destructive, it’s also somehow what I wish post-hardcore had been in the 2000s, ripping and gnarling on “Southpaw” while still having space among the righteously maddening, Neurot-tribal percussion work to welcome former Pelican guitarist Dallas Thomas for a guest spot. Next wave of artsy Chicago heavy noise? Sign me up. And I don’t know if that’s Roo or Fabian with the harsh scream, but it’s a good one. You can hear the mucus trying to save the throat from itself. Vocal cords, right down the trap door.

Ajeeb, Refractions

Comprised of Cucho Segura on guitar and vocals, Sara Gdm on bass and drummer Rafa Pacheco, Ajeeb are the first band from the Canary Islands to be written about here, and their second album — issued through no fewer than 10 record labels, some of which are linked below — is the 11-song/42-minute Refractions, reminding in heavy fashion that the roots of grunge were in noisy punk all along. There’s some kick behind songs like “Far Enough” and “Mold,” and the later “Stuck for Decades” reminds of grainy festival videos where moshing was just people running into each other — whereas on “Mustard Surfing” someone might get punched in the head — but the listening experience goes deeper the further in you get, with side B offering a more dug-in take with the even-more-grunge “Slow-Vakia” building on “Oh Well” two songs earlier and leading into the low-end shovefest “Stuck for Decades,” which you think is going to let you breathe and then doesn’t, the noisier “Double Somersault” and closer/longest song “Tail Chasing” (5:13) taking the blink-and-it’s-over quiet part in “Amnesia” and building it out over a dynamic finish. The more you listen, the more you’re gonna hear, of course, but on the most basic level, the adaptable nature of their sound results in a markedly individual take. It’s the kind of thing 10 labels might want to release.

OAK, Disintegrate

One might be tempted to think of Porto-based funeral doomers OAK as a side-project for guitarist/vocalist Guilherme Henriques, bassist Lucas Ferrand and drummer Pedro Soares, the first two of whom play currently and the latter formerly of also-on-SeasonofMist extreme metallers Gaerea, but that does nothing to take away from the substance of the single-song full-length Disintegrate, which plies its heft in emotionality, ambience and tone alike. Throughout 44 minutes, the three-piece run an album’s worth of a gamut in terms of tempo, volume, ebbs and flows, staying grim all the while but allowing for the existence of beauty in that darkness, no less at some of the most willfully grueling moments. The rise and fall around 20 minutes in, going from double-kick-infused metallurgy to minimal standalone guitar and rebuilding toward death-growl-topped nod some six minutes later, is worth the price of admission alone, but the tortured ending, with flourish either of lead guitar or keys behind the shouted layers before moving into tremolo payoff and the quieter contemplation that post-scripts, shouldn’t be missed either. Like any offering of such extremity, Disintegrate won’t be for everyone, but it makes even the air you breathe feel heavier as it draws you into the melancholic shade it casts.

Ultra Void, Mother of Doom

“Are we cursed?” “Is this living?” “Are we dying?” These are the questions asked after the on-rhythm sampled orgasmic moaning abates on the slow-undulating title-track of Ultra Void‘s Mother of Doom. Billed as an EP, the five-songer skirts the line of full-length consideration at 31 minutes — all the more for its molten flow as punctuated by the programmed drums — and finds the Brooklynite outfit revamped as a solo-project for Jihef Garnero, who moves from that leadoff to let the big riff do most of the talking in the stoned-metal “Sic Mundus Creatus Est” and the raw self-jam of the nine-minute “Måntår,” which holds back its vocals for later and is duly hypnotic for it. Shorter and more rocking, “Squares & Circles” maintains the weirdo vibe just the same, and at just three and a half minutes, “Special K” closes out in similar fashion with perhaps more swing in the rhythm. With those last two songs offsetting the down-the-life-drain spirit of the first three, Mother of Doom seems experimental in its construction — Garnero feeling his way into this new incarnation of the band and perhaps also recording and mixing himself in this context — but the disillusion comes through as organic, and whether we’re living or dying (spoiler: dying), that gives these songs the decisive “ugh” with which they seem to view the world around them.

Aktopasa, Journey to the Pink Planet

Italian trio Aktopasa — also stylized as Akṭōpasa, if you’re in a fancy mood — seem to revel in the breakout moments on their second long-player and Argonauta label debut, Journey to the Pink Planet, as heard in the crescendo nod and boogie, respectively, of post-intro opener “Calima” (10:27) and closer “Foreign Lane” (10:45), the album’s two longest tracks and purposefully-placed bookends around the other songs. Elsewhere, the Venice-based almost-entirely-instrumentalists drift early in “It’s Not the Reason” — which actually features the record’s only vocals near its own end, contributed by Mattia Filippetto — and tick boxes around the tenets of heavy psychedelic microgenre, from the post-Colour Haze floating intimacy at the start of “Agarthi” to the fuzzy and fluid jam that branches out from it and the subsequent “Sirdarja” with its tabla and either sitar or guitar-as-sitar outset and warm-toned, semi-improv-sounding jazzier conclusion. From “Alif” (the intro) into “Calima” and “Lunar Eclipse,” the intent is to hypnotize and carry the listener through, and Aktopasa do so effectively, giving the chemistry between guitarist Lorenzo Barutta, bassist Silvio Tozzato and drummer Marco Sebastiano Alessi a suitably natural showcase and finding peace in the process, at least sonically-speaking, that’s then fleshed out over the remainder. A record to breathe with.

Troll Teeth, Underground Vol. 1

There’s heavy metal somewhere factored into the sound of Philadelphia’s Troll Teeth, but where it resides changes. The band — who here work as a four-piece for the first time — unveil their Underground Vol. 1 EP with four songs, and each one has a different take. In “Cher Ami,” the question is what would’ve happened if Queens of the Stone Age were in the NWOBHM. In “Expired,” it’s whether or not the howling of the two guitars will actually melt the chug that offsets it. It doesn’t, but it comes close to overwhelming in the process. On “Broken Toy” it’s can something be desert rock because of the drums alone, and in the six-minute closer “Garden of Pillars” it’s Alice in Chains with a (more) doomly reimagining and greater melodic reach in vocals as compared to the other three songs, but filled out with a metallic shred that I guess is a luxury of having two guitars on a record when you haven’t done so before. Blink and you’ll miss its 17-minute runtime, but Troll Teeth have four LPs out through Electric Talon, including 2022’s Hanged, Drawn, & Quartered, so there’s plenty more to dig into should you be so inclined. Still, if the idea behind Underground Vol. 1 was to scope out whether the band works as constructed here, the concept is proven. Yes, it works. Now go write more songs.

Finis Hominis, Sordidum Est

Lead track “Jukai” hasn’t exploded yet before Finis HominisSordidum Est EP has unveiled the caustic nature of its bite in scathing feedback, and what ensues from there gives little letup in the oppressive, extreme sludge brutality, which makes even the minute-long “Cavum Nigrum” sample-topped drone interlude claustrophobic, never mind the assault that takes place — fast first, then slow, then crying, then slow, then dead — on nine-minute capper “Lorem Ipsum.” The bass hum that begins centerpiece “Improportionatus” is a thread throughout that 7:58 piece, the foundation on which the rest of the song resides, the indecipherable-even-if-they-were-in-English growls and throat-tearing shouts perfectly suited to the heft of the nastiness surrounding. “Jukai” has some swing in the middle but hearing it is still like trying to inhale concrete, and “Sinne Floribus” is even meaner and rawer, the Brazilian trio resolving in a devastating and noise-caked, visceral regardless of pace or crash, united in its alienated feel and aural punishment. And it’s their first EP! Jesus. Unless they’re actually as unhinged as they at times sound — possible, but difficult — I wouldn’t at all expect it to be their last. A band like this doesn’t happen unless the people behind it feel like it needs to, and most likely it does.

Space Shepherds, Losing Time Finding Space

With its title maybe referring to the communion among players and the music they’re making in the moment of its own heavy psych jams, Losing Time Finding Space is the second studio full-length from Belfast instrumentalist unit Space Shepherds. The improvised-sounding troupe seem to have a lineup no less fluid than the material they unfurl, but the keyboard in “Ending the Beginning (Pt. 1)” gives a cinematic ambience to the midsection, and the fact that they even included an intro and interlude — both under two minutes long — next to tracks the shortest of which is 12:57 shows a sense of humor and personality to go along with all that out-there cosmic exploratory seeking. Together comprising a title-track, “Losing Time…” (17:34) and “…Finding Space” (13:27) are unsurprisingly an album unto themselves, and being split like “Ending the Beginning” speaks perhaps of a 2LP edition to come, or at very least is emblematic of the mindset with which they’re approaching their work. That is to say, as they move forward with these kinds of mellow-lysergic jams, they’re not unmindful either of the listener’s involvement in the experience or the prospect of realizing them in the physical as well as digital realms. For now, an hour’s worth of longform psychedelic immersion will do nicely, thank you very much.

Amazon Vendor Central – PIM and DAM Solutions | Catsy

If you already have high-quality products, then content management separates you from succeeding in Amazon Vendor Central. Let’s say that the right approach to content management always makes all the difference. Apply these tips:

Prioritize keyword research

When you’re creating or updating your product content, it’s important to prioritize keyword research. This will help you identify the right keywords to target, which will in turn help your products rank higher in search results.

The best way to do this is using Amazon’s, Keyword Tool. This tool is designed to help you find keywords relevant to your products and with a high search volume. You can use these keywords throughout your product listing, including in the title, bullet points, and description.

Take these actions:

Optimize product titles and product descriptions

The product title should accurately reflect the content and include relevant keywords. Try to keep it concise and eye-catching so that Amazon will be drawn in by your words. In the same way, product descriptions should provide thorough information that conveys your product’s value while utilizing all Amazon-recommended descriptive words and phrases. Additionally, make sure all details are correct and error-free. Start by considering the four main components of the title: keywords and phrases, brands, attributes, and descriptors.

Focus on writing short & memorable key feature bullets

Your key feature bullets must be short and memorable so one can quickly scan them and understand your product. Rather than listing many features, focus on the most important ones and make sure they stand out. Use clear, concise language and avoid industry jargon that might not be easy to understand. And most importantly, be sure to proofread your features before publishing! A small mistake can make a big impression (not in a good way).

Make sure product attributes are complete & accurate.

This is key—if you want your product to show up high in Amazon Vendor Central search results, you must ensure that all the product attributes are complete and accurate. You can manage your product attributes in a few places, but the most important is the Product Detail Page. That’s where you get to demonstrate more about your product, so you want to ensure that all the information is accurate and up-to-date.

Enhance product images with appropriate metadata

It’s important to make sure that product images are clear and concise. But in addition to that, you also need to ensure that they are properly tagged with metadata. This might seem like a useless inclusion, but it’s quite important. By including metadata, you’re essentially giving Amazon’s algorithms more information to work with, which can result in your products being more easily found. To do this, you’ll need to edit the ALT text for each image. The ALT text is what appears when someone mouses over an image, and it should be no more than 125 characters. In addition to the ALT text, you’ll also need to fill out the image description field. This should be a brief sentence that tells Amazon what the image is of.

Ensure product content is consistent across all company channels

This is important for two reasons: first because it helps build a strong, consistent brand; and second, because it can help you avoid problems with Amazon’s policies. If you’re selling the same product on your company website, on other eCommerce platforms like eBay or Etsy, in brick-and-mortar stores, or even on social media, make sure the product content (including title, description, images, etc.) is the same on Amazon Vendor Central.

Continuously manage and improve your product content.

If you’re not already doing so, please start right away. Just because you’ve created great product content doesn’t mean it will stay great forever. Your product content should be a living, breathing thing constantly being updated and improved. As your products change and evolve, so too should your product content. To do this effectively, you need systems and processes to manage your product content. This includes having someone responsible for overseeing your product content, having a schedule for regularly reviewing and updating your content, and using tools that can easily update lots of content at once. It will quickly become outdated and inaccurate if you don’t have systems and processes to manage your product content at scale. This can hurt your sales and damage your reputation with customers.

PIM & DAM makes it easy to unify data and assets into a single source of truth that can be accessed from any device and location worldwide. This allows all stakeholders to use accurate and up-to-date content no matter where they work within the Amazon Vendor Central ecosystem. With the right PIM & DAM solution, you can easily aggregate product information from your internal sources and store it in one accessible repository. This unified platform enables users to quickly access, view, enhance, manage, and distribute all necessary product content with a button click. In addition to consolidating information into one platform, an effective PIM & DAM solution should leverage powerful technologies such as machine learning and natural language processing to enrich and correct existing product data automatically.

Decolonizing Psychedelics Through Inclusive Retreats and Practices

Ifetayo Harvey came to the mushroom ceremony ready to suffer.

When she took mushrooms, it was usually painful, visceral, and visual. Alongside five women of color, she steeled herself to face personal grief and collective wounds. But as the moonlight filtered through the window of the little house in the New Mexican desert, they cuddled by the fire, splashed in the bathtub, and drifted off to sleep.

“I’m not used to things being gentle in life,” Harvey says. “I almost wanted it to hurt.”

Ceremony facilitator Mikaela de la Myco, a queer, mixed-race woman who guides and supports psychedelic experiences, had never seen anything like it. The dose she served was potent, she says, which typically brings challenging experiences; it was as if the medicine sensed this group needed to rest. “As BIPOC, we think we can’t learn and grow through ease and grace,” Mikaela says. “Now I realize not every lesson has to be hard.”

Much of the current “psychedelic renaissance” focuses on scientific studies where people don eyeshades, listen to classical music, and have mystical experiences on a therapist’s couch. Legalization relies on these substances’ ability to treat conditions like depression and PTSD, and advocates say this medical model helps legitimize psychedelics for a skeptical public. Yet more than 80 percent of participants in psychedelic clinical trials are white, and most are cisgender and straight. While queer and BIPOC communities disproportionately experience trauma, many can’t access—or mistrust—the medical system for its abuse and neglect.

Just below the surface of the psychedelic mainstream, though, a peer-supported care network trawls the globe like mycelium, looking for partners to entangle. They call some medical approaches appropriation, erasing the traditions from which they descended. For many, psychedelics never went anywhere, and advocates aim to preserve access and pass down knowledge, much like Amazonian peoples used ayahuasca as an act of anti-colonial resistance.

Indigenous traditions are indeed alive and well—not just in these cultures but in the Global Northern underground. They’re carried by medicine keepers and independent educators like Mikaela and Darren Le Baron, who teaches how to grow your own (non-magic) ‘shrooms and lectures about psychedelics’ use in Africa, where Indigenous peoples still learn from “plant teachers” and journey together to a spirit realm considered just as real as this one. “My approach is creating spaces and places for people who feel disenfranchised with the machine to just create our own machine,” he says.

Their network includes BIPOC-led groups like the People of Color Psychedelic Collective (POCPC) and Liberation Training, which “work with our personal transformation to contribute to collective liberation,” says co-founder and medicine woman Charlotte James. “One of the key steps in that process is decolonization work, calling us to question what systems got us to this place, and what each of our roles are in replicating or dismantling those.”

“They say it’s more accessible because the cost is so much less, but if it’s less optimized or even re-traumatizing, is it really access?” —Charlotte James

Many in BIPOC communities targeted by the drug war don’t trust psychedelics any more than the medical system – queer people were once subjected to psychedelic “conversion therapy”. Yet psychedelic knowledge is ancestral, LeBaron says. He describes African plant medicine traditions embedded in everyday life, stewarded by a culture of elders, and mothers who microdose with mushrooms from conception through nursing. This literacy has largely been lost in the Global North, but Le Baron and the POCPC, where Harvey is director, host events that help people reconnect.

“We can’t just be like, ‘Take mushrooms. It’s therapy.’’ We need to say, ‘Wait, do you know what they are?’” Le Baron laughs. “Education is power, and through that power is empowerment.”

For psychedelics to become medically legal, clinical studies need reliable outcomes. Yet many say the power of these medicines is in their unpredictability. Community-centered spaces reflect this diversity of background and experience, offering supportive care before and after ceremonies for whatever comes up.

Sometimes this means crying, vomiting, and writhing in pain—but it can also look like singing, dancing, and laughing. “If the container is held well, with community, it’s a fun and joyous space,” says Jewell, a participant in Mikaela’s ceremonies. A good facilitator, she says, has the timing of a chef; handing someone a drum to bang as repressed memories surface; playing just the right music to encourage the comedown.

Yet there’s a reason Harvey expected a brutal experience: Pharmaceuticals treat traumas by suppressing the symptoms, while psychedelics bring them to the surface. Advocates say this enables healing, but without proper support, it can leave people raw and exposed. The process of interpreting, grounding, and contextualizing a psychedelic journey is known as integration, and it’s a crucial part of rituals from the Eleusinian Mysteries to visionary fasts. Yet it’s also where underground providers find early medical and commercial applications falling short.

For example, Oregon’s service centers only offer one optional integration session. A new ayahuasca pill promises the benefits of the psychedelic brew without its characteristic purge—but Indigenous traditions say that’s the whole point. James, from Liberation Training, calls it commodification run amok, describing virtual ketamine therapy where, in some cases, the aftercare was outsourced to an app that gave generic responses to people in crisis, a serious health risk. “They say it’s more accessible because the cost is so much less, but if it’s less optimized or even re-traumatizing, is it really access?” she asks.

In Indigenous traditions where the whole group journeys together, integration is built in. In the Global North, it must be cultivated. The underground communicates through invitation-only threads on encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal: One group Mikaela started now has over 650 members, and she creates a group chat for each communal ceremony. There are virtual and in-person integration circles, yoga, meditation, and sound baths. After ceremonies, Mikaela says, people often tell her, “I don’t know what was more helpful, the medicine or the people I met.”

Unfortunately, many BIPOC and LGBTQ people learn the hard way to trust their communities first. Only four percent of U.S. therapists are Black, and just 12 percent are queer, with few trained in culturally informed care – mainstream psychedelic spaces, sources say, are no more diverse. Medicine keeper and facilitator Preston Pacheco, who is queer and mixed-race, describes having to do “repair work” for those traumatized in white and straight-led ceremonies, as people are especially vulnerable to microaggressions, misgendering, and racism in the psychedelic state.

“Gender identity can be difficult to talk about because of the burden of explaining to a therapist who doesn’t share the same experience,” says Hope J., a co-organizer and facilitator of Transadelic, a peer integration group for gender-diverse people. “Simply being trans with other trans people and talking about medicine experiences calls that aspect of myself into the room the same way the medicine does.”

I experienced this firsthand as a member of Transadelic, and I felt it even more profoundly at the first ayahuasca retreat for LGBTQ people, held in April 2022 at the Temple of the Way of Light in Peru. Organized by a queer Brazilian facilitator and guided by healers from the Shipibo tribe, we offered collective pain to the psychedelic space and found it, and us, transformed.

“We’ve always healed in community,” says Pacheco. They co-hosted a retreat where all the leaders were queer, trans, and/or BIPOC, and fondly recall seeing “25 queer people laughing, crying, and dancing together. We built that space by us, for us.”

Similarly, Reggie Harris’ organization, Oakland Hyphae, hosts the Oakland, California, and National Psychedelic Conferences highlighting diverse workers and growers. While mainstream conferences feature “the same token BIPOC and queer people,” he says, his “feel like a family reunion”.

Still, James says, we all internalize colonial messaging, and even marginalized people can perpetuate oppression. Liberation Training, says alumnus Darian Gavin, helped attendees face personal and collective complicity with grace.

“Each session started with presence and connection with your lineage, unlike trainings where it felt like the white person was being smacked on the hand,” he says. “We learned from people across all walks of life about how different bodies might engage with these medicines. I cried because I didn’t want it to end.”

For all the talk of medicine and ritual, however, most people just trip. Washington says 90 percent of psychedelic use happens outside the clinical setting, and only one-quarter is ceremonial. Yet even “recreational” use can bring profound and challenging insights about oneself, the world, and the nature of reality—making peer support especially important for those exploring psychedelics outside a therapeutic framework.

In fact, the psychedelic truism of “set and setting” should be changed to “set, setting, and support,” says Hanifa Nayo Washington, co-founder of the Fireside Project, the first peer-centered psychedelic phone line. Two years in, volunteers have taken nearly 10,000 calls from people actively tripping or seeking help integrating past journeys. And their Equity Initiative pairs callers with volunteers from BIPOC, trans, and veteran backgrounds. Similarly, the Erowid website hosts over 20,000 trip reports with harm-reduction information, while the Reddit forum on DMT alone has more than 300,000 members.

Some psychonauts are joining independent scientists and picking up where the 60s counterculture left off, blurring the lines between the clinical and mystical. In Boulder, Colorado, for example, a group of explorers is preparing to map a world that may not exist. They carry with them not compasses and maps but altar offerings, spiritual totems, and cozy blankets—and their destination is hyperdimensional.

Based on the research of psychologist Rick Strassman and computational neurobiologist Andrew Gallimore, the Extended-State DMT program (DMTx) will use an intravenous anesthesia machine to extend the notoriously short-lasting trip of dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a powerful psychedelic that can transport users to a seemingly freestanding world populated by sentient beings. Though some consider ayahuasca sacred and injection sacrilegious, Gallimore says he sees both as different tools. Ayahuasca isn’t a naturally occurring compound, it’s an Amazonian technology. Similarly, “DMTx is a molecular technology that allows us to explore normally hidden realms,” he says, optimized for extended voyages.

The DMTx program was established in 2016 by Daniel McQueen, co-founder of the Center for Medicinal Mindfulness, who funds the program. They’ve run training retreats with smoked DMT since 2018, and with DMT now legal in Colorado, they hope to launch extended-state “missions” in 2024. Their team includes scientists, spiritual leaders, artists, and writers, who’ll attempt to “map” the DMT realm in images and words and even contact the entities people encounter on trips.

“If you talk to the Indigenous or mestizo shamans, they don’t care much about the idea of reality.” —Chris Timmermann

While talk of exploration and entity contact could sound colonial, intention matters: McQueen calls DMTx a community-based approach in the countercultural spirit, challenging norms of science, research, and reality, with reciprocal relationships as the goal. That’s a big draw to the scientists involved – along with Gallimore, neuroscientist Chris Timmermann of Imperial College London, who is conducting separate clinical studies using DMTx, is advising the program.

“From the Western perspective, we’re obsessed with the binary of the real versus non-real, scientific validation versus not, internal versus external world,” says Timmermann, who is from Brazil. “But if you talk to the Indigenous or mestizo shamans, they don’t care much about the idea of reality.”

In the same way, Harvey says her experience at Mikaela’s ceremony “doesn’t necessarily fit into the box of successful clinical outcomes.” She once worked for the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), the organization behind the trials that might lead to legalization. “There’s this desire to put psychedelic experiences in a box of good versus bad experiences, and sometimes it’s neither, or beyond,” she explains. “White epistemology requires certainty, and a lot of cultures these substances come from don’t require that.”

As Gavin says and Harvey experienced, even rest and recreation are a privilege for many marginalized people, and accessing that can be as profound as an ayahuasca purge. Mainstream science might “validate” traditional knowledge, but decolonizing psychedelics requires an ontological shift: Challenging binary concepts that separate the spiritual and material while “having room and deep consideration for lived experiences rather than just ‘empirical evidence,’” as Gavin puts it.

Whatever happens with decriminalization, there will always be folk healers and interdimensional explorers, queers and women of color dancing in the woods, and people who just want to go to the doctor. “We all need to sit around a table as diplomats for our communities,” says Le Baron, “then be able to invite MAPS and Imperial College to our tables. These organizations are doing what they’re supposed to do, but for the masses, I think it starts in the ground.”

Perhaps, James notes, this intelligent medicine realizes that change requires many routes. We’ll need every tool in humanity’s toolbox, choosing the right ones for each job. As Le Baron says, “Get in where you fit. We’re all different players on the same team. That’s how we’re going to decolonize the psychedelic space.”

Woman Has Hands, Feet Amputated After C-Section Infection

Late last week, researchers announced that the already high maternal mortality rate in the U.S. hit its highest level since 1965. The number of people who died during or shortly after pregnancy increased a staggering 40 percent from 2020 to 2021, marking the third year in a row the maternal mortality rate had increased in this country. And that was before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade—though abortion was effectively banned in Texas for the last four months of 2021.

I was already thinking about these dire numbers, and how more forced pregnancies will mean more women dying, when I read the story of Krystina Pacheco, a Texas woman who had her hands and feet amputated due to a life-threatening infection she developed after a C-section.

Pacheco, 29, didn’t have a miscarriage and wasn’t denied an abortion—she had what she called an “uneventful” C-section in late October 2022. But she started feeling feverish two days later, the day she was discharged, and a nurse gave her ibuprofen. She kept feeling sick and saw a doctor, who sent her to the ER. From there she was airlifted to a different hospital where doctors diagnosed her with septic shock. That’s the most dangerous stage of sepsis, in which the body has an extreme reaction to an infection, and it can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis is the second leading cause of pregnancy-related death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

She stayed in the ICU for two weeks and was put on an ECMO machine to let her heart and lungs heal. Doctors said she had a 20 percent chance of surviving and she miraculously did, but ECMO can reduce blood flow to the limbs and it damaged her hands and feet so badly that she needed all four of her extremities amputated. After three months in the hospital, multiple skin grafts, and several weeks in a rehabilitation center, Pacheco only recently went home to her husband and two children.

What was left out of much of the coverage about these mortality rates was that severe complications from birth—people who almost die—vastly outnumber actual deaths. The CDC has noted for years that for every person who dies from pregnancy, another 70 women come close. In previous years, that’s meant about 50,000 people. But in 2021, when more than 1,200 women died, that means about 84,000 women almost died. (And the CDC doesn’t count homicide when it tallies the maternal mortality rate, even though homicide—often at the hands of a partner—is the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths, moreso than any health problems.)

The experiences of women like Pacheco underscore that pregnancy is not a benign event. As Erin Gloria Ryan recently wrote in Jezebel, “Pregnancy is cool and miraculous, and it’s fantastic that our bodies can do it—but carrying a pregnancy to term is also something that could literally kill you and at the very least will change your body permanently.” Thousands of pregnant people will experience serious medical complications and will try to recover, all while facing massive medical bills.

What happened to Pacheco is rare, yes, but sepsis and other complications can happen to any birthing person. And while I don’t know anything about Pacheco’s views on abortion, these are the kinds of health risks that six Supreme Court justices and countless lawmakers are forcibly subjecting people to.

Weeks after the fall of Roe, Nisha Verma, an OB/GYN in Georgia and a fellow with Physicians for Reproductive Health, shared her concerns about more people having to stay pregnant in a country where pregnancy already harms and kills so many. “We are going to see people die and have terrible outcomes from this,” Verma told Jezebel in July. “More people carrying pregnancies to term and delivering…there’s risk in that.”

It’s one thing to take these risks if you want children, but it’s entirely another if you were forced to continue a pregnancy. “If someone chooses to continue their pregnancy, knowing they have a high-risk condition [like high blood pressure], that is completely fine and we are all there to support them and to optimize their health,” Verma said. But many people can’t access abortion, so in “many cases, it’s not even a choice. And that’s just going to get worse and worse.”
