Efforts to Bring a Skate Park to Rainier Beach Pick Back Up | South Seattle Emerald

Danielle Jackson has revived a project she dreamed up four years ago after witnessing a kid ride down Renton Avenue on a skateboard in the rain.

She was bewildered and thought, “There’s gotta be somewhere where our kids can go skate.” That’s when Jackson says she found Seattle’s Citywide Skatepark Plan, which pointed to sites across Seattle ripe for a skate park. The Rainier Beach Playfield was one of them, but for any project to take off, it had to be community-led.

At first, only a few people showed up to her meetings. It also so happened that they would come from far-off places like Spokane and even Canada. Today, after the pandemic forced a shift to online meetings, Jackson says she’s found larger support from the surrounding communities.

Her first community meeting on Jan. 19 was well attended with more than 10 breakout rooms for the “design game,” which encouraged participants to place specific markers like skate bowls, benches, and ramps on a map of the area where the skate park will be built.

“I had never done anything like that before, but it was pretty cool,” Jackson said, adding that the purpose behind the design game was for the community to use their imagination and dream big.

Rainier Beach Playfield is surrounded by schools such as Dunlap Elementary and Rainier Beach High School. The site is also near the library and the community center, which Jackson says makes it a perfect spot for a multiuse skate park catered to kids, families, and youth.

“If we are going to put a skate park, let’s make some use of it,” she says. “Not just for the community, but for the schools to go outside of their walls.”

The proposed Rainier Beach Skatepark would be located in Rainier Beach Playfield, close to schools and near the Rainier Beach Community Center at Rainier Avenue South and South Henderson Street. Image courtesy of Rainier Beach Skatepark.

Jackson, who founded the youth organization Changing Habits And Motivating Personal Self-Esteem Resource Center (C.H.A.M.P.S.), is a community organizer. She has her hands in efforts across the South End, including organizing the annual Halloween Boo Bash. Her skate park project comes at a time when Seattle is having a skate park renaissance. Two skate parks, one in South Park and the other at Seattle Center, were recently remodeled and opened to the public last summer.

So far, Jackson says she needs to raise a little more than $2 million for the park, which will range between 13 and 15 thousand square feet. She’s teamed up with Parents for Skateparks and has tapped the local Skate Like A Girl organization for help.

Her next online community meetings will be in April. The design game public outreach approach also includes a prize drawing. Participants have a chance to win gift cards donated by Sausage Skateboards and Black Market Skates.

Inaugural Ecuador Cup of Excellence Auction Results in Record-Breaking Price Per PoundDaily Coffee News by Roast Magazine

Winning producers, jurors and representatives of COE and ACEDE gathered last week in Guayaquil. Cup of Excellence courtesy photo.

The first ever Ecuador Cup of Excellence (COE) coffee auction broke the previous COE per-pound price record established earlier this year in Ethiopia.

In total, buyers from all over the world shelled out just over $250,000 USD for the 23 winning microlot coffees, with an average price of $33.55 per pound. By comparison, the current “C price” for arabica coffee — a benchmark price for the commodities market — is approximately $2.49 per pound.

Ecuadorian national judges met with winning farmers and members of the Asociacion de Cafes Especiales del Ecuador (ACEDE) last week at Universidad Ecotec in Guayaquil to watch the historic auction.

The top-scoring lot — a washed process, Typica Mejorado variety coffee grown by Abel Salinas Pacheco in the Loja region — fetched $97.10 from Taiwan’s Haru International Corporation.

Another Taiwanese coffee company, Orsir Coffee, purchased the #2 lot — a natural-process, Sydra variety coffee grown by Pablo Andrés Eguiguren Calisto at El Aguacate farm, also in Loja — for $49.20 per pound.

“The first-ever Ecuador COE is worth celebrating. We’ll host 4 to 5 public cuppings within Taiwan in our cafe and some interesting places like coffee events,” Orsir Coffee’s Joe Hsu said in an announcement from the COE organizers. “Ecuadorian coffee has recently gained interest with customers here in Taiwan which has caused us to want to find extraordinary lots to bring into Taiwan, we will definitely promote it.”

The third-place coffee — another washed-process Typica Mejorado, grown by Curt John Madison at Alaska Del Sur — was purchased jointly by United States coffee companies Cometeer and George Howell Coffee for $75.10 per pound. A split of that lot was also bought by the department store brand Harrods for $76.50 per pound.

The top six coffees in the competition all hailed from the Loja region, while winners also came from the regions of Pichincha, Chimborazo, Imbabura and Zamora.

A second Ecuador Cup of Excellence competition is being planned for 2022.

The Chronicle of the Horse

When Rolando Pacheco heard his name announced last week during the $2,500 Grooms’ Class at the 2022 Winter Equestrian Festival, he immediately kissed his horse, Forever Dance, in appreciation and walked forward to join the other top five hunter grooms. It was Pacheco’s first time competing in the class at WEF in Wellington, Florida, and he was excited.

“I’ve done two other grooms’ classes—one in Arizona like 15 years ago and another one in Virginia many years ago, when I was working for the Schaefers, and Sam was still riding ponies. But at that time, I wasn’t ready to win those classes—I didn’t have enough experience,” he said.

As the announcer continued, reading the ribbon winners in reverse order, Pacheco stood quietly with his horse. When he heard his name announced as the winner, he planted another kiss on Forever Dance’s nose and broke into a wide smile. Before walking to the winner’s circle to claim his ribbon, Pacheco first gave the horse a big pat on the neck.

“We have the whole thing on video; it was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen,” said Ocean Echo’s barn manager and Pacheco’s co-worker, Kim Davidson. “He has so much appreciation for the horses, and they love him.”

Although Pacheco, 39, has only been working for professional hunter rider and trainer Jennifer Hannan for five weeks at her Ocean Echo Farm (Wellington and Wakefield, Rhode Island), she said he fits right into her program.

“We absolutely love him,” Hannan said. “We feed the horses an organic, all-natural diet—we make it ourselves. It can be a little tedious, but he was so interested in learning all about it. I also don’t like to bathe the horses daily, and I really emphasize that to my guys. Rolando didn’t bat an eye; he was like, ‘No problem, I’ll groom more.’”

Pacheco has been grooming professionally for 23 years.

“My two older brothers worked for [top hunter trainer] Peter Pletcher in Texas for a while, and I was so interested in what they were doing,” Pacheco said. “We had horses and cows at our family farm in Guanajuato, Mexico, but this was different. I came to the United States when I was 16 and worked for a barn in Houston for a bit and then moved East.”

Forever Dance, a 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Furst Nymphenburg—Atlantis) owned by Seahorse Show Stable, is one of Pacheco’s favorite horses to care for at Ocean Echo. He normally competes with Hannan in the 3’3” green hunter division.

“He’s a beautiful horse, and he likes me,” Pacheco said. “When [Hannan] gave him to me to care for, I was so excited. It’s a pleasure to have him on my care list.”

Hannan gives a lot of credit to the horse show for running the Grooms’ Class.

“It’s so nice that they do this for the grooms,” she said. “They work incredibly hard, harder than anyone realizes. Even for this particular class, most of them spent time getting their horses ready and then did all of their normal work on top of that. They deserve to be recognized for their hard work.”

The Grooms’ Class, the first of several planned for this WEF season, had 42 entries across separate hunter and jumper divisions. For the class, grooms are asked to bring a ‘show-ring ready,’ fully tacked and booted horse to the ring. Grooms and their horses are judged on overall cleanliness, appropriate use and fit of tack, tack cleanliness, application of boots/wraps, neatness of clipping, braiding job, overall presentation and their grooming box.

The jumper judges were Nina Leonoff, who is a long-time groom for Meredith and Ludger Beerbaum, and Denise Moriarty, who grooms for Kent Farrington at many top FEI international competitions, including the Tokyo Olympic Games. The hunter judges were Eugenio Garza Perez, who is a top FEI show jumper for the Mexican team, and Lillie Keenan, who was a decorated junior rider and is now a successful FEI show jumper.

“I think this is the hardest class to judge at the horse show,” Keenan said. “Every groom here works so hard. The people who groom, they take such pride in their work, and they give it their all every day.”

To place the grooms and pick a winner, Keenan said she prioritized the little details.

“There were so many beautiful horses in this class, but I’m looking for the small details, like the quality of their skin, their tack, if they’re prepared for what division they would show in,” she said. “I have judged this class before, and some people try too hard to impress us; they bring more than what they actually would need for the ring. Our winner was prepared for the weather, his horse was well-cared for and comfortable being handled. That particular horse looked like he was ready to walk in and win the model class.”

On the jumper side, Mario Galven won the blue ribbon. Galven tacked up Cruisilier for the class, a 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse stallion (Cruising—Crosskeys Cavalier) owned by Heathman Farm, LLC. Cruisilier competes in the 1.35-meter jumper division with rider Chris Stinnett.

“I was honored to be able to stand out there with all of the top grooms at this show,” Galven said. “Winning was an added bonus!”

“I always make sure my ring backpack is fully stocked with anything we could need at the ring,” he said. “There are a lot of variables that can come into play when you’re at the ring; you never know if a piece of equipment may malfunction or if your rider wants to change something. I like to be prepared for anything.”

Like Pacheco, Galven grew up in Guanajuato, Mexico. Eleven years ago, he came to the United States to work and learn from his uncle, who is also a professional groom. For the past eight months, Galven has worked for Heathman Farm in Wellington.

Galven’s favorite part of his job is the time he gets to spend with his horses.

“I take pride in knowing every detail about the horses in my care: their attitudes, their likes and dislikes,” he said. “I always strive to make sure my horses feel 100% so that when they step into the ring, they are ready to perform at their best.”

Daniel Cyphert, the head rider at Heathman Farm, complimented Galven’s attention to details.

“Mario has a work ethic and pride in his horses that is unrivaled, and we are so grateful to him,” Cyphert said. “Since he’s worked for us, I’ve not only noticed his perfectionist mentality toward his job but also his phenomenal horsemanship skills. I was always taught that for a horse to be truly great, it must be cared for like it is great. That process is never lost with Mario.”

Real Madrid 3-0 Alaves: Benzema, Asensio and Vinicius strike as LaLiga leaders bag much-needed win | Daily Mail Online

Real Madrid 3-0 Alaves: Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio and Vinicius strike in the second-half as LaLiga leaders bag much-needed victory amid rocky run

Marco Asensio scored another brilliant goal for Real Madrid and then told a frustrated Santiago Bernabeu to stop whistling the team as they beat Alaves 3-0

Madrid moved seven points clear at the top having played a game more than second-placed Sevilla largely thanks to Asensio’s brilliant left-foot curler from outside the area.

The Spain midfielder rarely scores ordinary goals and this was another screamer but his celebration was tempered by fury at the way Real Madrid supporters had started to whistle the team as they labored without success in front of goal for an hour.

Marco Asensio struck a wonderful goal for Real Madrid as they breezed through Alaves

The midfielder bent a lovely curling effort into the top-corner as Madrid finally broke through

Vinicius Junior scored the second, firing in after Benzema and Asensio’s clever link-up play

Asensio was individually targeted by some of the fans inside the Bernabeu and he almost gifted Alaves the opening goal of the game just before Madrid scored. He gave the ball away leaving Alaves substitute Pere Pons through on goal but the midfielder, who had only just come on, missed the target.

Madrid have scored one goal in their last four games and it was beginning to look as if the drought would continue but the man who got the last goal would open the scoring.

With his trademark finish, cutting in from the right, he found the top corner of Pacheco’s net and that was a enough to open up the game. Karim Benzema hit the post shortly after. And the Frenchman teed-up Vinicius to score the second after a brilliant build-up that involved Asensio and Fede Valverde.

Asensio was taken off shortly afterwards and this time there was only applause.

Rodrygo was brought down in the area by Lejuene and on 90 minutes Karim Benzema stepped up to beat Pacheco and make it 3-0.

French striker Karim Benzema sealed the three points for Madrid with a 91st minute penalty

Madrid struggled to create anything clear-cut in the first-half and went in goalless at the break

Madrid had struggled in the first half. Dani Carvajal crossed from the right and Asensio side-footed it goalwards but it trickled into Fernando Pacheco’s hands. Carvajal and Asensio were two of the players who under-performed in the week against Paris Saint Germain and were given the chance to make amends as Carlo Ancelotti picked an unchanged team apart from Fede Valverde, who came in for Toni Kroos.

It was Valverde who had Real Madrid’s next chance with a lob just over to the top as Real Madrid made a positive start with the finishing touch against Jose Luis Mendilibar’s team. The Basque coach had never won at the Bernabeu picking up just one point from 36 in his time as a manager.

He watched his team come close just before the half hour mark when the ball ran to Jason Remeseiro but with space and time inside the area he blazed over. It was frustrating stuff for Madrid as – that chance aside they struggled to break down Alaves’ defence. Luka Modric was booked for a late challenge on the impressive Mammadou Loum.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side remain clear atop LaLiga, sealed a good win amid a troubled run

Alaves grew in confidence and and Luis Rioja drilled a lot shot at Thibaut Courtois’ near post but the Belgian keeper saved. Modric flashed a shot towards Pacheco but he made the save comfortably.

At the start of the second half he was less sure of himself when Vinicius tested with a free-kick from distance. He spilled the effort but he smothered the loose ball before Benzema could pounce.

Madrid were waking up slowly and Vincius drew a save from Pacheco. When the ball ran to Benzema his effort was cleared off the line by Florian Lejuene.

The omens were not good and sure enough Asensio broke the deadlock and silence the crowd and open the floodgates.

COVID economy: Bay Area meat, fruit, vegetable prices soar

Prices for meat, fruit, and other key food items in the Bay Area skyrocketed in February, at a time when coronavirus-linked business shutdowns persisted, government officials reported Wednesday.

The overall cost of living in the Bay Area as measured by the consumer price index remains tame, but costs for certain essential products such as food have rocketed higher, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

The main bright spot in the current trends: While the costs for many vital food items soared in February, the increase was slightly less brutal than in December, according to this news organization’s analysis of the government report.

However, for the first time since state and local government agencies began to order business shutdowns to combat the spread of the coronavirus, prices for unleaded gasoline began to rise, slightly.

The situation was brutally worse for many items bought for home consumption.

Meat, poultry, fish, and egg prices soared 16.2% higher in February compared to the same month the year before. That was slightly less than the 17.5% increase posted for the 12-month period ending in December.

Fruit and vegetable prices also jumped, rising 10% for the one-year period that ended in February, compared with a 12.2% increase for the 12 months that ended in December.
