David Vincent Silva, 64, of Centerville, MA died Monday, September 6, 2021 after several years of living life to its fullest while coping with cancer. With the help of his excellent and caring medical team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (most notably Dr. Andrea Bullock and Dr. Michael Curry), his primary care physician Dr. Henry P. Tufts, his extraordinary Visiting Nurse Association Hospice caregivers (most notably Diane Munsell, RN), and his loving family and friends, Dave overcame multiple health challenges and far surpassed anyone’s life expectancy guesses!
Dave was a fighter in all the best ways. Born in Fall River, MA to Antonio Pacheco Silva and Elizabeth Finglas Silva, he graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School in 1974. After serving four years in the United States Air Force as an Aerospace Ground Equipment Mechanic, he worked at the Barnstable Municipal Airport while also earning his Associate’s Degree at Cape Cod Community College. Having seen a local doctor’s notice on a bulletin board for a “J24 Crew Member,” Dave’s competitive spirit landed him the “job” and the rest is history! Dave raced out of the Hyannis Yacht Club for several years before becoming an integral crewman on his brother-in-law’s Etchells, out of the New Bedford Yacht Club.
Sailing Wednesday nights throughout the season for years, and in numerous regattas across New England, Florida and Canada, Dave passed on his love for the ocean, boating, competition and sportsmanship to his children. Just ask his family and friends about the wild rides on “Scooter” to Monomoy and the unforgettable sails on “Beacon” on the Sakonnet River and Mount Hope Bay at the family cottage in Portsmouth, RI!
Having transitioned from the airline industry in 1985, Dave began his 30+ year career in the United States Postal Service, working mostly out of the Brewster, MA office. There, he was a valued, dependable employee while also serving as the president of the Hyannis Area Local branch of the American Postal Workers Union. He was a passionate and strong advocate for worker’s rights.
There aren’t sufficient words to describe how much Dave loved and prioritized his family. He was truly selfless – always stepping in to be the baseball coach, the hockey coach, the impetus behind karate, ski trips, sailing lessons and summer vacations at Grindell’s Ocean View Trailer Park in Dennisport, MA.
Married to his childhood sweetheart for over 41 years, Dave is survived by his wife, Pamela Knight Silva, his three children: Deacon J. Silva and his wife Sarah of Marshfield, MA; Daniel E. Silva and his wife Mallory of Kingston, MA; and Elizabeth M. Silva of Centerville, MA. He was the proud, loving and adoring “Cappy” to three grandchildren: Owen David Silva, Emma Katherine Silva and Nathan Joseph Silva. David is predeceased by his parents and older brother Edward A. Silva. He is survived by his sister Karen E. Figuenick of Altamonte Springs, FL and his “best bro” Vincent E. Silva and his wife Kimberly of Marstons Mills, MA. In addition, Dave leaves many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members. He will be dearly missed and always loved.
Visiting Hours will take place on Monday, September 13, 2021 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home,160 West Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Our Lady of Victory Parish, 230 South Main Street, Centerville, MA 02632. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 1:15 p.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery on Connery Avenue in Bourne, MA.

Mesa County says it has the backup files claimed to be lost
Approximately 250 people attended a Dec. 1 rally outside the Mesa County Old Courthouse to show support for Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters and Garfield County resident Sherronna Bishop.
The gathering occurred after having been mentioned as a concern in a local newspaper report that morning regarding Mesa County “beefing up its security” due to threats of violence from voter-fraud conspiracy theorists with the group U.S. Election Integrity Plan. One such threat cited by county officials came from group member Shawn Smith, who spoke at the event.

Both Peters and Bishop have continued to claim without evidence that voter fraud occurred in the 2020 election, and are under investigation for breaches of election security protocols. As part of that investigation, the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, along with the FBI, conducted a search warrant at the homes of the two women, on November 16.
Bishop described the search of her home as “brute force, terrifying tactics.”
“District Attorney Dan Rubinstein – you owe me a door,” she told the crowd of supporters while standing on the steps of the courthouse.
When asked to comment, Rubinstein’s office responded in an email, stating “The FBI conducted federally-authorized law enforcement actions in a different jurisdiction from mine. I do not work for the FBI, and the FBI does not work for me. It is unclear to me why Ms. Bishop will look to me to replace her door.”
Attorney General Phil Weiser’s office denied that force was used when they conducted the searches at the two properties.
“We dispute how some have characterized the law enforcement action, said Lawrence Pacheco, the attorney general’s director of communications. “The searches carried out last month in Garfield and Mesa counties were executed in a professional and lawful manner.”
Still, Bishop’s comment rattled at least one woman who was attending the rally. Jean Canterbury, of Custer County, said she met Bishop a year or so ago.
“I’m just shocked that a mom would have her door broken in by the FBI for any reason,” Canterbury said. “When they break down the door of someone you know, they can break down yours. I’ve never been so frightened in my life.”

In addition to Peters and Bishop, several of their supporters spoke to the crowd gathered on the south lawn of the courthouse. State Rep. Ron Hanks (R-Canon City); Todd Watkins, formerly with U.S. Border Control; Shawn Smith, with U.S. Election Integrity Plan; and Richard Harris, of the Truth & Liberty Coalition, were among those who addressed the crowd from the courthouse steps.
Hanks, who is running to unseat U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, called President Biden an “unelected installed agent of a foreign power.”
Via email, Colorado Democratic Party spokesperson Nico Delgado offered this statement in response, “Insurrectionist and leading Republican Senate candidate Ron Hanks is using this election conspiracy rally to prop up his campaign that’s rooted in the Big Lie. While Hanks is doing everything he can to win a coveted endorsement from Donald Trump, Senator Michael Bennet is fighting for Coloradans by working to lower costs for families, fix our roads and bridges, and create good-paying jobs.”
Some tried to downplay the Daily Sentinel’s report about possible brewing violence. Although a man with a nametag identifying him as Dave Winney, a candidate for Secretary of State openly wore a gun at his side. Another man, who declined to give his name, told a reporter that “everyone” at the event was armed – though that wasn’t apparent.
Peters, Harris, and Smith – of U.S. Election Integrity Plan – repeatedly accused Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold’s office of destroying Mesa County’s election records. Smith claimed 29,000 election records were destroyed during the trusted build (a computer system update) process in the spring of 2020.
However, Mesa County Treasurer and former county clerk and recorder Sheila Reiner said a backup of the files was completed. During standard computer upgrades county clerks are instructed to back up their election databases, she said.
“That should have been done,” during the upgrade, Reiner said. “We do know it was done after the general election.”
If Peters did the backup as instructed, she took the information with her, Reiner said, adding that Peters also copied the hard drive, which she then allegedly gave to an unauthorized person named Gerald Wood, who is also under investigation.

“They are saying 29,000 records were wiped out; I’m saying we have a good copy of backup that was done last year,” Reiner said. “We still have all the paper and electronic records to verify the 2020 election.”
Debbie Perry Smith, of Littleton was leading one of the many prayers during the event, when she interjected that contrails from overhead aircraft were leaving marks on “us all day long,” referencing the long-debunked “chemtrails” conspiracy theory
Cory Anderson, a member of Stand For The Constitution, responded to a recently published photo of himself flashing the “three percenter symbol” – a hand sign of the Three Percenters militia movement. Anderson told the crowd that the term harkens back to the American Revolutionary War where “less than 3% rose up” to fight for independence.
“They’re not going to take our weapons,” Anderson said, before adding, “I’m not part of a militia on the Western Slope.”
Peters became emotional – as did Bishop – at times when talking about her supporters and how she loves them. Then, Peters, an avowed Trump supporter, mentioned how U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, and others, “will do everything he can do to suppress the truth and take our voice.”
Nova Tucker, who also helped USEIP canvass Mesa County voters, was one of the supporters selling “Truth and Justice” T-shirts at the rally to raise money for Peters’ legal defense fund. By the end of the two-hour event 49 T-shirts at $20 each had been sold.

Nitekim Hz. Peygamber, Recep ayı girdiğinde “Allah’ım! Recep ve Şaban’ı bize mübarek kıl ve bizi Ramazan’a ulaştır.” diye dua etmiştir (Ahmed b. Hanbel, Müsned, I, 259).
Peygamber’in hadis-i şeriflerinde işaret buyurulmuştur. Tevbe Sûresi’nin 36. âyetinde şöyle buyurulmaktadır:Şüphesiz Allah’ın gökleri ve yeri yarattığı günkü yazısında, Allah katında ayların sayısı onikidir. Bunlardan dördü haram aylardır. İşte bu,
A new clinical trial has demonstrated that a differential allotment of avocados may impact overall self-reported caloric consumption, as well as macro- and micronutrient nutrient intake, including saturated fat and sodium, and food groups, including dairy, refined grains, and red and processed meats.
Pacheco et al. investigated the impact of two levels of avocado allotment, plus a standard nutrition education intervention on the nutritional status of Hispanic/Latino families. Image credit: Sandid.
“Based on their nutrient profile, avocados could be a favorable component of a plant-based eating pattern, with half of a medium sized fruit providing up to 20% of the recommended daily fiber, 10% potassium, 5% magnesium, 15% folate, and 7.5 g of monounsaturated fatty acids,” said study first author Dr. Lorena Pacheco, a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health at the University of California San Diego.
“However, there are gaps in our knowledge on the effects of avocado intake on nutritional status.”
“Meticulous attention must be given to the delivery of nutrition education emphasizing how to appropriately incorporate avocados as part of a healthy dietary pattern, i.e., so that avocados do not excessively add to total caloric and/or saturated fat intake, or negatively influence snacking behavior (e.g., chips and guacamole), which could also increase sodium intake.”
“Therefore, we conducted a clinical trial aimed to integrate avocados into the diet of families and measure the impact of this intervention on energy, macro- and micronutrient intakes.”
“Our hypothesis was that the high avocado allotment would lead to an improved family-level nutritional status and improved cardiometabolic risk factors.”
For the study, Dr. Pacheco and colleagues enrolled 72 families (231 individuals) consisting of at least three members each over the age of 5, residing in the same home, free of severe chronic disease, not on specific diets, and self-identified as Mexican heritage.
The families were randomized into the two allotment groups for six months, during which time both groups also received bi-weekly nutrition education sessions.
The rationale for focusing on families of Mexican heritage was two-fold: (i) Hispanic/Latino people in the United States have a higher-adjusted prevalence of obesity and lower intake of key nutrients than other demographic groups in the country; (ii) for Hispanic/Latino immigrants, dietary quality worsens as they become acculturated, adopting a Western dietary pattern that is higher in refined carbohydrates and animal-based fats.
The researchers wanted to assess if increased but moderated consumption of a single, nutrient-dense food might measurably improve overall health and decrease diet-related disparities.
The avocado was chosen because it is a traditionally consumed plant-food that was originally domesticated thousands of years ago in Mexico and parts of Central and South America.
Though the scientists discerned no change in body mass index measurements or waist circumference between the two groups during the trial, they did note that consuming more avocados appeared to speed satiety — the feeling of fullness after eating.
They also found that families consuming more avocados correspondingly reduced their consumption of animal protein, specifically chicken, eggs and processed meats, the latter of which are typically higher in fat and sodium.
Current nutrition guidelines recommend reduced consumption of both fat and sodium.
But surprisingly, high avocado consumers also recorded decreased intake of calcium, iron, sodium, vitamin D, potassium and magnesium, which researchers said might be associated with eating less.
“Our results show that the nutrition education and high avocado intake intervention group significantly reduced their family total energy intake, as well as carbohydrate, protein, fat (including saturated), calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, potassium and vitamin D,” Dr. Pacheco said.
“In secondary energy-adjusted analyses, the nutrition education and high avocado allotment group significantly increased their intake of dietary fiber, monounsaturated fatty acids, potassium, vitamin E and folate.”
“The trial may provide a strategy for supporting existing public health efforts to reduce saturated fat and sodium, both nationally consumed in excess of nutritional guidelines,” the authors concluded.
“In addition, there was high adherence to the study protocols by participants, underscoring the value of using a single, nutrient-dense plant food already familiar and favored by participants.”
“Testing of a culturally appropriate plant-foot on energy intake, by bicultural and bilingual community health workers, should be extended to other populations.”
The findings were published in the journal Nutrients.

Pictured are, front, from left, Ashlie Sherwood, Ella Wiltbank, Aubrie Sherwood, Jayci McClain, and Samantha Pippo; back, from left, assistant coach David Allred, Braylyn Gojkovich, Stephanie Hoopes, Maddie Gann, Adysen Hoopes, Ashlynn Chlarson, Maya Mattice, Saydee Allred (MVP), Kyli Mattice, and head coach Roy Corona.
THATCHER – The No. 1 Pima Roughriders girls basketball team rolled over all the competition at the 45th annual Eastern Arizona College Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament and secured the championship trophy with a 56-33 victory over No. 2 Thatcher. Pima’s other wins were 72-31 over Morenci in the semifinals and 92-14 over Willcox in the opening round.
“That was a fun game,” said Pima head coach Roy Corona. “To beat a well-coached, pretty good Thatcher team – that was good.”
Saydee Allred was nearly unstoppable for Pima, as she nailed four dimes on the night and went for a jaw-dropping 28 points to lead all scorers in the championship game. Allred finished the 3-game tournament with 56 points and was selected as its Most Valuable Player.
While the offense shines, it was the Roughriders’ defense that turned the tide of the game.
“We went to the 1-3-1 defense zone and got some steals and made some layups,” Corona said.
Both teams came out hard in the first quarter and battled to a near-stale-mate. However, Thatcher got the edge when Jade Griffin scored off a turnover just before the buzzer to go up 11-9 after one-quarter of play. It would be the Eagles’ last lead of the night.
Jon Johnson Photo/Gila Herald: Tournament MVP Saydee Allred attempts to drive on Thatcher’s Aubrey Pace.
Pima held Thatcher to just a lone field goal by Griffin in the second quarter and one free throw for a combined 3 total points in the period. Conversely, Pima’s smothering defense forced turnovers that led to fast-break opportunities, and the Roughriders hit for 17 in the quarter for a huge swing and a 26-14 lead at the half.
Both teams played to a stalemate in the third quarter, and the 12-point lead stayed the same. Pima poured it on in the fourth, however, and had 21 points in the quarter to increase its lead. Coach Corona had his bench lined up to come in with a little more than three minutes left to play and later called a time-out to get them into the game. Thatcher head coach Dennis Griffin did so likewise and let the reserve players get some tournament championship action.
Jon Johnson Photo/Gila Herald: Ashlynn Chlarson prepares to shoot a free throw.
“That fourth quarter we scored 21 and that’s what got us the win,” Corona said.
Allred was Ms. Consistent and hit a long ball in each quarter. She also went 10-13 from the foul line and Pima hit 18-25 from the charity stripe for the game.
Ashlynn Chlarson made her presence known on both the offensive and defensive side and disparaged Eagles’ shots on one side while gathering rebounds and putbacks and jumpers on the other. Chlarson finished with 13 points on the night. Other scorers for Pima included Ashlie Sherwood with 9; Aubrie Sherwood with 4, and Ella Wiltbank with 2.
“I think our whole team did really good,” said Tournament MVP Saydee Allred. “We showed up tonight.”
Jade Griffin and Haley Nicholas led Thatcher with 8 points each; followed by Ashlynn Thompson with 7; Olivia Lunt with 6, and Aubrey Pace and Macey Carter with 2 points each.
“I’m happy,” Corona said. “I’m so proud of these girls – they work so hard.”

All-Tournament Team
The 45th annual EAC Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament All-Tournament Team includes three players from Pima and Thatcher, two from Morenci and Fort Thomas, and one each from Safford, Saint David, Duncan, and Willcox.
Tournament MVP Saydee Allred grew up watching the tournament every year and has participated in it three times. (The 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID-19)
“It feels really good,” Allred said. “Hard work pays off.”
Jon Johnson Photo/Gila Herald: The EAC 45th annual Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament All-Tournament Team members are, from left, MVP Saydee Allred, Ashlie Sherwood, and Aubrie Sherwood (Pima), Jasmine Olivar, and Chasinee Stanley (Fort Thomas), Lexi Lucas (Safford), Kam Wyatt (Willcox), and Olivia Lunt, Ashlyn Thompson, and Haley Nicholas (Thatcher). Not picured are Julianna Aguilar, and Zenaya Cortez (Morenci), Anissa Jacquez (Saint David), and Kiley McGrath (Duncan).
That “hard work” for Allred includes off-hours practices by herself and always hustling during team practice.
Those selected include, from Pima, Saydee Allred (MVP), Ashlie Sherwood, and Aubrie Sherwood; from Thatcher, Haley Nicholas, Ashlyn Thompson, and Olivia Lunt; from Morenci, Julianna Aguilar, and Zenaya Cortez; from Fort Thomas, Chasinee Stanley, and Jasmine Olivar; and the rest are Lexi Lucas – Safford, Anissa Jacquez – Saint David, Kiley McGrath – Duncan, and Kim Wyatt – Willcox.
Third Place Game
The No. 3 Fort Thomas Apaches came back against the No. 4 Morenci Wildcats to secure third place in the tournament with a 72-68 victory.
Jon Johnson Photo/Gila Herald: Fort Thomas’ Jasmine Olivar prepares to make her move against Morenci’s Devanie Medina.
With under 2 minutes to play in the third quarter, Morenci still held a 46-40 lead, and by the end of the quarter led 50-45.
The Apaches clawed back to go up in the fourth quarter, however, and its pressure defense forced turnovers that led to fast-break opportunities for the streaky quick team. The Fort had a 62-61 lead with 3:34 left in the game.
Morenci then battled back and took back the lead. However, Jasmine Olivar then went on a personal 5-0 run to put Fort Thomas back on top. In the end, Olivar sealed the victory with a free throw at the end of the game to pull out the 72-68 win.
Olivar led the Apaches with 26 points; followed by Alleenna Gilbert with 14; Hailey Hinton with 9; L.J. Rope with 8; Jayla Wilson with 7; Chasinee Stanley with 6, and Tyesha Wilson with 2.
For Morenci, Zenaya Cortez led the way with a game-high 28 points; followed by Mia Ontiveros with 13; Elena Leonard and Delicia Roybal with 8 points each; Devanie Medina with 6, and Julianna Aguilar with 5.
Fifth Place Game
The No. 6 Safford Bulldogs defeated the No. 5 Saint David Tigers 39-29 in the tournament’s only upset.
Lexi Lucas and Brianna Camarena led Safford with 11 points; followed by Gracie Sterns with 7; Ashlyn Schilling with 5; Jaidyn Mortensen with 4, and Ashtyn Schuh with 1 point.
Taylee Jacquez led Saint David with 10 points; followed by Mayla Trejo with 9; Anissa Jacquez with 6, and Halee Deskins and Jasmine Pacheco with 2 points each.
Seventh Place Game
The No. 7 Duncan Wildkats defeated the No. 8 Willcox Cowgirls 35-16.
Kiley McGrath led the way for Duncan with 16 points; followed by Emily Kempton with 7; Sadie Hawkins and Aubray Evans with 3 points each, and Kierra Lacey with 1 point.
Willcox was led by Kam Wyatt with 6 points; followed by Mia Mongarro and Maycee Michaels with 5 points each, and Izela Torres, Alyssa Rogers, and Maylee Thompson all had 2 points each.
