Cross-country finals: Newbury Park turns in historic performance

History was made Saturday at the Southern Section cross-country championships at Mt. San Antonio College. The first six finishers in the Division 1 boys’ race were from Newbury Park High. Talk about pushing each other to perfection — the Panthers have taken that attitude to a new level under coach Sean Brosnan.

The Panthers finished with a perfect 15 to win the Division 1 team title. It’s never been done before. The pack of Newbury Park runners was led by Colin Sahlman, who won in 14 minutes 52.6 seconds. Then came Lex Young (14:52.7), Aaron Sahlman (14:52.8), Leo Young (14.52.9), Daniel Appleford (14.59.2) and Dev Doshi (15:00.1). Just wait until next week’s state championships in Clovis when Brosnan really lets them try to run their fastest times.

Let’s try … a #Perfect15 for @NPHSXC in the @CIFSS Championships Boys Division 1 race! Senior @ColinSahlman wins in 14:52.6, @YoungAlexio (14:52.7), Aaron Sahlman (14:52.), @_Leo_Young (14:52.9), Daniel Appleford (14:59.2)! @gohsxc edges @LoyolaTFXC for second! pic.twitter.com/PSXVWIfAKP

It wasn’t just the Newbury Park boys’ team putting on a show and winning the Division 1 title. The girls’ team also won a Division 1 title over the 3-mile course, with Alabama-bound Sam McDonnell winning in 16:50.5.

“I’m pretty proud of the guys, and the girls did a great job too,” Brosnan said.

In Division 2, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa won the boys’ and girls’ team titles. In Division 2 boys, Jai Dawson of Dana Hills won in 14:55.2. Dalia Frias of Mira Costa won the Division 2 girls title in 16:48.6.

Isaiah Givens of Pasadena had the fastest boys’ time of the day, winning Division 3 in 14:48.2.

West Torrance’s Aaron Cohen suffered a broken collarbone when a group of runners went down in the opening 50 meters of the Division 3 race. He was smiling afterward while being watched over by paramedics because West Torrance won the team title.

City championships

There was morning fog and cool weather for the City Section cross-country finals at Pierce College, but that’s not the reason sophomore Max Fields of Palisades was the only runner out of 75 in the Division I final wearing gloves.

“My good luck charm,” he said.

Fields went out and ran a personal-best time of 15 minutes 22.5 seconds to capture the Division I title and lead Palisades to the team title. He finished second last spring as a freshman in the 3,200 during track season. He qualified for next weekend’s state championships in Clovis.

In Division I girls, Granada Hills’ Isabel Castagnola continued her rapid improvement and won the title with a time of 18:18.9. She came into this season having never broken 19 minutes. Teammate Jocelyn Pacheco was second. Granada Hills ran away with the team championship.

In Division II boys, James Jimenez of Venice won in 15:59.4. Monroe won the team title. In Division II girls, Lidia Prokopovych of Venice won in 19:07.3. Eagle Rock took the team crown.

The Franklin High duo of Francisco Rodriguez and David Martinez finished one-two in Division III boys. Rodriguez ran 15:48.1 and Martinez finished in 15:50.4. Right behind in third was sophomore Jude Sandridge of Reseda in 15:56. Verdugo Hills won the team title.

Dulce Gonzalez of Canoga Park took the girls title in 18:52 and the Hunters won the team title.

Odegaard is one of Europe’s most creative midfielders – The Athletic

There were eight Alaves defenders between Martin Odegaard and the goal when the then Real Sociedad playmaker picked the ball up 35 yards out with the game goalless and almost 20 minutes played.

One perfectly directed and weighted slide-rule pass cut past all of Tomas Pina, Pere Pons, Rodrigo Ely, Martin Aguirregabiria and Lisandro Magallan, and also tempted Alaves goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco from his line, allowing La Real forward Mikel Oyarzabal a simple finish to make it 1-0.

The 2019-20 La Liga campaign was only six weeks old, but the best assist of the season had already been played. La Real went on to win that game 3-0 and move second in the early season table.

Odegaard had already shown that at 21 he was capable of deciding games with a dominant performance a few weeks earlier in a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid. He had opened the scoring himself by driving into the box and hitting a shot which deflected off Stefan Savic to the net, then helped seal…

Technical Analysis of Stocks and Trends

What Is Technical Analysis?

Technical analysis is the study of historical market data, including price and volume. Using insights from market psychology, behavioral economics, and quantitative analysis, technical analysts aim to use past performance to predict future market behavior. The two most common forms of technical analysis are chart patterns and technical (statistical) indicators.

Key Takeaways

  • Technical analysis attempts to predict future price movements, providing traders with the information needed to make a profit.
  • Traders apply technical analysis tools to charts in order to identify entry and exit points for potential trades.
  • An underlying assumption of technical analysis is that the market has processed all available information and that it is reflected in the price chart.

What Does Technical Analysis Tell You?

Technical analysis is a blanket term for a variety of strategies that depend on interpretation of price action in a stock. Most technical analysis is focused on determining whether or not a current trend will continue and, if not, when it will reverse. Some technical analysts swear by trendlines, others use candlestick formations, and yet others prefer bands and boxes created through a mathematical visualization. Most technical analysts use some combination of tools to recognize potential entry and exit points for trades. A chart formation may indicate an entry point for a short seller, for example, but the trader will look at moving averages for different time periods to confirm that a breakdown is likely.

A Brief History of Technical Analysis

The technical analysis of stocks and trends has been used for hundreds of years. In Europe, Joseph de la Vega adopted early technical analysis techniques to predict Dutch markets in the 17th century. In its modern form, however, technical analysis owes heavily to Charles Dow, William P. Hamilton, Robert Rhea, Edson Gould, and many others—including a ballroom dancer named Nicolas Darvas. These people represented a new perspective on the market as a tide that is best measured in highs and lows on a chart rather than by the particulars of the underlying company. The diverse collection of theories from early technical analysts were brought together and formalized in 1948 with the publishing of Technical Analysis of Stock Trends by Robert D. Edwards and John Magee.

Candlestick patterns date back to Japanese merchants eager to detect trading patterns for their rice harvests. Studying these ancient patterns became popular in the 1990s in the U.S. with the advent of internet day trading. Investors analyzed historical stock charts eager to discover new patterns for use when recommending trades. Candlestick reversal patterns in particular are critically important for investors to identify, and there are several other commonly used candlestick charting patterns. The doji and the engulfing pattern are all used to predict an imminent bearish reversal.

How to Use Technical Analysis

The core principle underlying technical analysis is that the market price reflects all available information that could impact a market. As a result, there’s no need to look at economic, fundamental, or new developments since they’re already priced into a given security. Technical analysts generally believe that prices move in trends and history tends to repeat itself when it comes to the market’s overall psychology. The two major types of technical analysis are chart patterns and technical (statistical) indicators.

Chart patterns are a subjective form of technical analysis where technicians attempt to identify areas of support and resistance on a chart by looking at specific patterns. These patterns, underpinned by psychological factors, are designed to predict where prices are headed, following a breakout or breakdown from a specific price point and time. For example, an ascending triangle chart pattern is a bullish chart pattern that shows a key area of resistance. A breakout from this resistance could lead to a significant, high-volume move higher.

Technical indicators are a statistical form of technical analysis where technicians apply various mathematical formulas to prices and volumes. The most common technical indicators are moving averages, which smooth price data to help make it easier to spot trends. More complex technical indicators include the moving average convergence divergence (MACD), which looks at the interplay between several moving averages. Many trading systems are based on technical indicators since they can be quantitatively calculated.

The Difference Between Technical Analysis and Fundamental Analysis

Fundamental analysis and technical analysis are the two big factions in finance. Whereas technical analysts believe the best approach is to follow the trend as it forms through market action, fundamental analysts believe the market often overlooks value. Fundamental analysts will ignore chart trends in favor of digging through the balance sheet and the market profile of a company in search of intrinsic value not currently reflected in the price. There are many examples of successful investors using fundamental or technical analysis to guide their trading and even those who incorporate elements of both. On the whole, however, technical analysis lends itself to a faster investing pace, whereas fundamental analysis generally has a longer decision timeline and holding period by virtue of the time required for the extra due diligence.

Limitations of Technical Analysis

Technical analysis has the same limitation of any strategy based on particular trade triggers. The chart can be misinterpreted. The formation may be predicated on low volume. The periods being used for the moving averages may be too long or too short for the type of trade you are looking to make. Leaving those aside, the technical analysis of stocks and trends has a fascinating limitation unique to itself.

As more technical analysis strategies, tools, and techniques become widely adopted, these have a material impact on the price action. For example, are those three black crows forming because the priced-in information is justifying a bearish reversal or because traders universally agree that they should be followed by a bearish reversal and bring that about by taking up short positions? Although this is an interesting question, a true technical analyst doesn’t actually care as long as the trading model continues to work.

Avocados Help Latino Families Eat Healthier, Says Study

Avocados are a key part of a nutritious diet for Latino families, according to new research from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science.

Researchers compared Latinos families who consumed a few avocados (three per week) and families who consumed a lot of avocados (14 per week) along with a standard nutrition intervention over six months.

Latino families who ate more avocados reported consuming fewer calories, saturated fats, and sodium, which are major contributors to obesity among Latinos.

They also had healthier hearts in terms of structure and function

“Recent trials have focused on individuals, primarily adults, and limited to changes in cardiometabolic disease blood markers. Our trial’s results provide evidence that a nutrition education and high avocado allotment reduces total caloric energy in Mexican heritage families,” lead study author Dr. Matthew Allison of UC San Diego told SciTechDaily.

Are Avocados Healthy?

Avocados are rich in vitamins C, E, K, and B6. They are also good sources of riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, potassium, lutein, beta carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids.

They are a heart-healthy fruit that provide naturally good fats and are cholesterol- and sodium-free.

Replacing saturated fats with monounsaturated fats, like those found in avocados, may help reduce the risk of heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.

“Dietary fats are essential to heart health in that they give your body energy and help your body absorb key nutrients,“ said Chef Hamlet Garcia in videos featuring avocado recipes in English and Spanish. “Avocados, in moderation, are one of the best foods you can eat to maintain a healthy diet and help keep your risk for heart disease at bay.”

What Did the New Study Find about Avocados and Latino Family Health and Nutrition?

For the new study, researchers enrolled 72 Latino families (231 individuals). Each family had at least three members older than 5, resided in the same home, and were free of severe chronic disease and on no specific diets.

All families received 12 bi-weekly nutrition education sessions.

Half of the families got large allotments of avocados, the others low allotments for six months.

“At 6 months, the high avocado allotment group had a significant reduction in energy intake, carbohydrate, animal and vegetable protein, saturated and polyunsaturated fat, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, and vitamin D intakes (all p < 0.05),” according to the study. “A high allotment of avocados significantly reduced self-reported energy intake by 29% kcal/family/day, compared to a 3% kcal/family/day reduction in families who received a low allotment.”

These results show the benefits of avocados in public health efforts to reduce Latinos’ saturated fat and sodium intake.

“Culturally-appropriate plant-food interventions may alter the nutritional status of at-risk families,” according to the study.

The results also reinforced the nutritional profile of avocados.

“Based on their nutrient profile, avocados could be a favorable component of a plant-based eating pattern, with half of a medium-sized fruit providing up to 20% of the recommended daily fiber, 10% potassium, 5% magnesium, 15% folate, and 7.5 g of monounsaturated fatty acids,” study first author Dr. Lorena Pacheco of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and UC San Diego told SciTechDaily.

Why Do We Need to Address Latino Health and Nutrition?

Salud America! research shows that U.S. Latinos face health inequities in many areas—from poverty and social support to access to affordable housing and transit—that contribute to higher rates of obesity.

Latino adults have higher obesity rates than their white peers (47% and 37.9%).

Latino children do, too (20.7% and 11.7%).

This, in turn, leads to disparities in diabetes and risk for COVID-19, heart disease, certain cancers, and other health conditions. Addressing the root causes, such as improving access to healthy food, can help address obesity.

“The bottom line is: Childhood obesity rates are far too high,” said Dr. Amelie G. Ramirez, director of the Salud America! program at the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio. “Children of color, and those furthest from economic opportunity, are at greatest risk. The COVID-19 pandemic is probably making things worse.”

What You Can Do to Improve Latino Health and Nutrition?

As expansions to SNAP begin to impact Latinos and families, policy leaders have more work to do to ensure nutrition security.

The University of Connecticut’s Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity offers suggestions for actions that federal, state, and local governments can take, including creating nutrition standards for kids’ meals and eliminating unhealthy food and beverage marketing to children as a tax-deductible expense.

Recommendations also include how public health advocates and practitioners can push for changes to these marketing practices.

“Develop campaigns to increase public awareness of the vast amounts of primarily unhealthy fast-food advertising, especially advertising that disproportionately targets children, teens, and communities of color,” the Rudd Center report states. “Support youth-led counter marketing campaigns to expose marketing practices by the top fast-food advertisers.”

You can also make a difference in your community’s nutrition.
