FURY GET A PAIR OF HAT TRICKS IN 14-6 WIN OVER ST. LOUIS

St. Charles, MO (March 5, 2021) – The St. Louis Ambush fell 14-6 to the Ontario Fury Friday night at Axius Field at the Family Arena. The loss dropped the Ambush to 6-7 on the season, while Ontario improved to 5-1.

Ontario took a 2-0 lead within the first two minutes of the contest. Juan Carlos Gonzalez scored in the first minute, followed by Jorge Deleon, who nailed a long shot from just inside the yellow line. St. Charles native Justin Stinson scored for Ontario at 11:50 and Thiao Goncalves at 13:02 to give the visitors a 4-0 advantage at the end of the opening frame.

It was more of the same in the second quarter, with two goals from St. Charles native Justin Stinson and one from Maicon De Abreu for a 7-0 game. The Ambush finally got on the board with back-to-back goals within the ninth minute that, in each case, came off an Ambush player’s foot and found the back of the net courtesy of an Ontario player. The two Ambush tallies were credited to Tony Walls and Jerjer Gibson. Ambush defender Greg Kranz went on a long run with the ball, passed it to Howard Miller, Jr., who passed it back to Kranz, who got off a hard and accurate shot into the net to make it a 7-3 contest, a score that held until halftime.

Ontario went up 8-3 on Franck Tayou’s unassisted tally at 6:39 of the third period. The Ambush answered less than a minute later when Vadim Cojocov passed to William Eskay, who was able to get his shot passed Ontario goalkeeper Jesus Molina to make the score 8-4.

Ontario increased their lead to 9-4 when Ambush goalkeeper Paulo was out of the goal and couldn’t get back in time to stop a shot from Nestor Hernandez in the fifth minute of the fourth quarter. St. Louis went on a power play when Jesus Pacheco was sent to the penalty box for boarding and it was an opportunity they would make good on as Tony Walls scored at 5:32 to shave the deficit to 9-5. With Paulo once again out of the goal helping on offense, De Abreu got his second of the night on an empty-netter at 8:54. With the sixth attacker in play for the Ambush, Stefan Mijatovic made it 10-6 at 10:43. Ontario took advantage of St. Louis using a sixth attacker instead of a goalkeeper by scoring three times in less than two minutes. Ambush goalkeeper Paulo came back in goal, but it didn’t stop the onslaught as Gonzalez scored again with three second remaining on the clock for a 14-6 final.

Ontario outshot St. Louis 28-27 in the match. Molina made 11 saves on 17 chances (.647 Sv%) in goal for the Fury. Paulo made eight saves in 19 attempts (.421 Sv%) in goal for St. Louis.

The Ambush are back in action Sunday afternoon when they clash with the Tacoma Stars in a 3:05 p.m. matinee affair. After this weekend’s action, the Ambush will close out the regular season at home when the Dallas Sidekicks invade the Family Arena Friday, March 12 at 7:35 p.m. CST. Tickets for upcoming home games are available at the Family Arena box office or online at ticketmaster.com. Young undocumented immigrants again have the chance to live and work in the United States without fear of deportation under the protection of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program after restrictions were lifted Dec. 4.

Federal judge Nicholas G. Garaufis, of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, ruled the government must allow eligible immigrants to apply for DACA, invalidating a memorandum from summer 2020 that allowed DACA renewals to be processed but barred any new applicants, according to a Dec. 4 report in The New York Times. The memo was issued by acting secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf. The article estimated 300,000 new applicants could be eligible. The judge also restored work permit renewals to two years after the summer memo restricted them to one year.

For Catholic Charities of Arkansas Immigration Services in Little Rock and Springdale, which handles both initial DACA applications and renewals, it was a relief.

“Finally,” said Jennifer Verkamp-Ruthven, director of Immigration Services. “It was a huge sigh of relief because we’ve had people calling even over the years” despite the program being halted for first-time applicants. “People barely missed it whenever it went away.”

“I was excited, but nervous too because we have a lot of people calling because they’ve been waiting for years. Hopefully we can stay on top of it,” she added.

Since the news, the Little Rock office has 55 new DACA applicants on the waiting list to start the process. The Springdale office has had 56 calls and has submitted seven applications. Because many staff members in the Little Rock office have never processed initial applicants, only renewals, they completed virtual training the first week in January.

The 2012 program, started under President Barack Obama, protects undocumented immigrants, known as Dreamers, who were under age 31 as of June 15, 2012, and who were brought to the United States before age 16. They are required to have a high school diploma or G.E.D. (except those who serve in the U.S. military) and keep a clean criminal record to be protected from deportation through the program, which also provides permits to work legally. They are also allowed to receive a driver’s license.

According to The New York Times, “researchers estimate that 250,000 U.S.-born children have at least one parent who is enrolled in DACA, and that about 1.5 million people in the United States live with a beneficiary of the program.”

DACA has been a target under the administration of President Donald Trump since he took office in 2016. Trump called the program unconstitutional and issued an executive order in September 2017 to end it, an effort halted by federal judges. The program has been in limbo until the Supreme Court ruled June 18 that Trump did not follow proper procedures to end DACA. The summer memorandum restricting DACA again came after the ruling.

The New York Times stated immigration advocates were hopeful the outgoing administration would not challenge the ruling before a new administration takes over.

“It’s kind of a whirlwind. I feel like the DACA saga has just kind of brought people up and down quite a bit over the years,” Verkamp-Ruthven said.

Diana Pacheco, 23, a parishioner at St. Theresa Church in Little Rock, applied for and was approved for DACA in 2016. She came to the U.S. from her native Mexico at 6 years old.

“The first one to come to the United States was my mom. It was a better life since in Mexico it’s really hard to get a job, to live over there,” Pacheco said.

After graduating high school, college and a living-wage job were out of reach, despite spending most of her life in the United States. Since DACA, she has worked in the hotel industry, but also recently applied for a position in customer service at an eye care clinic.

“If I wouldn’t have had DACA, I wouldn’t have been able to work in something else or experience something else,” she said, adding she cried when DACA was reinstated in the summer and when the restrictions were lifted last month.

“I was really excited not just because of me, but because my nephew graduated last year, and if they wouldn’t bring DACA back, he wouldn’t be able to apply for DACA and apply for college,” Pacheco said.

Karla Campalans, an immigration specialist in training who has worked on several DACA renewals, said they’ve received calls daily to ask about the application process, which can take three to four months with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services backed up because of COVID-19 pandemic closures.

For her, “giving them this opportunity and being this person that did the paperwork for them … I’m just super excited to be bringing them hope.”

Verkamp-Ruthven said this ruling could also help with the shortage of nurses during the pandemic. In 2019, the Arkansas Legislature passed Act 837, which allows DACA recipients who have graduated from a nursing program to be licensed to practice in the state.

President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office Jan. 20, has stated his support for the DACA program.

However, immigration advocates have been calling for years to create a permanent legislative solution for Dreamers to live and work in the U.S. with a possible path to citizenship.

“I hope that one day in the future they can say DACA recipients can become U.S. citizens,” Pacheco said. “It will make us really excited, not just because of being a U.S. citizen, but because we won’t have the fear of being deported, taking DACA away. We have opportunities now, but being a U.S. citizen has more opportunities.”

Radical changes and big incentives as Mass Save becomes a climate fighting tool — but is it enough? – The Boston Globe

The Globe has reported that state data showed the program was converting only a few hundred homes a year to electricity, far short of the state recommendation of 100,000 a year.

At a hearing of the state Senate Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change Monday, legislators and clean energy advocates agreed the new plan represents a significant step in the right direction, but they also questioned whether it goes far enough and urged the utilities that administer Mass Save to do more.

“Given the urgency of the climate crisis, we need Mass Save to be more tightly aligned with the Massachusetts emissions reduction obligation,” said Senator Cynthia Creem, who chairs the committee. “There is considerable room for improvement on that front.”

Since the initial plan was filed in April, the utilities that operate Mass Save have been negotiating with the board that oversees the program, the Energy Efficiency Advisory Council, to strengthen the plan. The final version was submitted to the Department of Public Utilities last week with the approval of the council, and will be ruled on by the agency by February.

“We believe that the plan puts the commonwealth on a pathway to achieving mandated reductions by 2030 and then ultimately net-zero by 2050,” said Christopher Porter, director of customer energy management for National Grid in New England.

In addition to the new incentives for gas customers to electrify, the proposal offers incentives for new construction that is all-electric and for moderate income customers, renters, and landlords, and it increases the number of homes and businesses eligible for weatherization. The plan would invest over $49 million to help develop a workforce to electrify buildings and would target funds to better serve environmental justice and language-isolated communities that had been less likely to benefit from the Mass Save program.

Despite those changes, advocates at the hearing expressed concern that continued incentives for existing gas customers to upgrade to more efficient gas equipment will only extend the state’s reliance on fossil fuels, at a time when the state’s climate plans call for rapid electrification.

According to the state’s Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2030, Massachusetts must electrify one million homes by then in order to achieve its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent below 1990 levels. But as the Globe reported in August, last year saw just 461 homes completely electrify, according to data from Mass Save and the state.

“We need to see some real clear evidence of achievement here in terms of getting it done,” said Senator Marc Pacheco at the hearing. “At the end of the day, if we don’t have it done, we’re going to have a huge problem because we can’t go back and reclaim that time.”

The proposed plan does not achieve the state’s goal of an average 100,000 electrifications a year, but Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources Commissioner Patrick Woodcock said at the hearing that, based on the state’s analysis of the Mass Save proposal, the work done in this three-year period would put the state on track to electrify a million homes by 2030.

“We need to have the heat pump workforce developed in the next three years; we need to have customers start to say this is a product that is not just good for the environment, that this is improved comfort and strong economics,” he said. Establishing that now will lead to an S-curve of heat pump adoption, in which the vast majority get installed in years closer to the end of the decade, he said.

Mass Save is funded via a surcharge on utility customers’ bills. In recent years, the Energy Efficiency Advisory Council has tried to prioritize three big changes to Mass Save — increased electrification, equity, and workforce development — but had little success until recently, according to Amy Boyd, a member of the council and the director of policy for Acadia Center, a clean energy advocacy organization.

That changed when the state passed its 2021 climate bill, which required the Mass Save plan to incorporate a greenhouse gas emissions savings target, changed the mandate of the Department of Public Utilities to include climate and equity, and invested in workforce development.

“I will admit that the council faces challenges when trying to make policy part of the equation, particularly without legislation to back us up,” Boyd said at the hearing.

In July, as required by the climate law, the Energy and Environment Administration established a specific target for greenhouse gas emissions reductions to be achieved via the Mass Save three-year plan. That target — 845,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide — is equal to the emissions of 183,771 passenger cars driven in a year, or burning more than 900 million pounds of coal, according the EPA’s greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator.

Many of the advocates pointed to an inherent contradiction in the Mass Save program, namely, that utilities with major natural gas operations are asked to facilitate the switch off fossil fuels. “It’s just not realistic to believe that we will be able to move as quickly and as urgently as possible, when we’re asking an entity to work against their own best interest,” said Eugenia Gibbons, Massachusetts climate policy director for Healthcare Without Harm.

Gibbons and others in the hearing urged that as the Legislature continues its oversight of the Mass Save program, it considers whether a third party might be more appropriate to run this critical part of the climate agenda.

There’s an “inherent conflict that exists within Mass Save, in terms of getting these goals — actually they’re not longer goals, they’re requirements — implemented in Massachusetts,” said Pacheco. “I’m very concerned about that.”
