The CW Orders Two More Episodes of Superman & Lois

A character possibly related to the larger Superman mythos has been cast in a guest role for an upcoming Superman & Lois episode… and he certainly has some genre cred.

KryptonSite has exclusive confirmation from the studio and network that Daniel Cudmore, best known to comic book fans as Colossus, the strongest member of the X-Men team in several films of that franchise, has landed the mysterious role of “Subjekt-11.”

Here’s the official character description:

SUBJEKT-11: Strong and stoic, Subjekt-11 is a brute with a mysterious mission.

We might note that a character known as “Subjekt-17,” a hulking monster kept in a Soviet lab for several decades, was introduced in the Superman #655 comic book by Kurt Busiek, Carlos Pacheco, and Jesus Merino. You can see that character to your left.

KryptonSite cannot confirm which episode the character will be seen in, but clearly, someone in the Superman & Lois-verse is doing some nasty experiments. With characters like Morgan Edge on the table for Season 1, there could be any number of story possibilities.

Born in British Columbia and standing at 6’7,” Daniel Cudmore is also known for his role as Felix, the all-powerful Volturi guard, in the popular Summit Entertainment Twilight franchise. In addition to guest roles in series such as Stargate SG-1, Supernatural, and Psych, he has landed in several other comic book inspired properties, most recently having a recurring role in Marvel’s Helstrom on Hulu.

Superman & Lois won’t be Cudmore’s first Arrowverse appearance, either: He played “Jackhammer” in the Arrow episode “Code of Silence,” Gridlock on The Flash, and the Minotaur on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Superman & Lois premieres Tuesday, February 23 on The CW with a special two-hour event. See the trailer here!

Tropa Magica Release Spacey New Single “Sonora Distance” With Hardcore Cumbia Beats

When psychedelia meets classic Latinx beats, you get the delightful sounds of Tropa Magica, an East L.A. band whose space laser Cumbia reflects the wonderful mezcla of Chicano culture in Southern California.

The band’s newest single “Sonora Distance” blends a driving Cumbia beat with gently distorted guitars and soulful psychedelia. With a fun groove and upbeat melody, the song shimmers across an endless ether, shooting up to the stars while still staying close to the culture and hearth back home.

Known for their primal and energetic demeanor on stage and in their music, this song drenched in a vibrant energy. It’s also the first single the band wrote and produced remotely during the covid-19 pandemic.

Children of Mexican immigrants, Tropa Magica’s frontmen Rene and David Pacheco were initially inspired to make music by the novelty they felt being introduced to American rock music and going to punk shows in East L.A. They have been able to expand that and create a niche for themselves in music by taking that inspiration and infusing it with the music and culture their parents and grandparents carried with them from Mexico.

Merging not only sounds but communities, Tropa Magica capture two distinct scenes from different eras and marry them with an open mind and playful recreation.

Naomi Campbell works with ‘third photographer of color’ in ‘whole career’ for i-D cover – TheGrio : TheGrio

Naomi Campbell works with ‘third photographer of color’ in ‘whole career’ for i-D cover

The supermodel was photographed at her home in Kenya by Luis Alberto Rodriguez for the topless cover shoot.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell covered i-D’s Utopia in Dystopia Issue, no. 362, Spring 202 and revealed the shoot was only one of few where she worked with a non-white photographer.

Campbell described the atmosphere of working with the creative team behind the shoot. Despite a professional career that spans multiple decades, she revealed the vibrant cover was only one of three where she worked with a photographer of color.

“I think that’s something you can see: in how at ease the I am; in the style of Luis’ [Alberto Rodriguez] photography,” she stated. “It was just very real, very organic. And I felt proud, humbled, and happy to be part of a shoot with young creatives that are all my skin colour, and that I’m getting to work with them after so many years of being in fashion industry. It’s very rare that this has happened to me. Luis is the third photographer of colour I’ve worked with in my whole career in fashion.”

This cover story is not the first time she has recently opened up about the racial disparities in the fashion and editorial fields of work. theGrio reported as the cover star for Vogue‘s November 2020 issue, Campbell reflected on her years in the industry and her continued advocacy for Black models.

“I never used to say the word racism; I just used to say, it’s territorialism,”  she said according to the report.  “I never wanted people to say that I used that as an excuse, that I was throwing that word out. Now I’m happy that everyone’s all on the same page, that everyone feels comfortable to come out about their experiences without feeling some stigma. But for me, nothing’s changed. I’m going to speak the same way.”

The i-D shoot occurred at the supermodel’s home in Kenya. She shared her hope to display the country and the continent in a positive manner.

“When I’m in Kenya there are days that are less hectic than others, but I’m always busy. I’m being more careful at the moment because of the situation with COVID, but I still saw the kids in the orphanage that I support, I didn’t want to let them down. I want to reach as many people as I can. I want to spread awareness. There’s a part of me where, if I love something, I want the world to know about it.”

The supermodel continued, “When you see these images, I hope you see that Kenya is beautiful, that Africa is beautiful. I think people now are going to really open their minds and start to understand that real beauty is in Africa. There are so many gems, so many hidden secrets. I’ve been coming here since 1994 and I’m still discovering things.”

She continued to share with i-D her hopes for the new year after an eventful 2020.

“At the end of 2020, my main reflections were on the need for us to move upward and forward. We have to rise to every challenge and walk through it. And we will get through it. 2021 is going to be a great year, we’ve just got a few more bumps to get through first. Nothing disappears overnight, but we just need to get through this first quarter. After that, I believe that this is going to be an amazing year.”

The creative team on Campbell’s photoshoot enlisted Carlos Nazario as fashion director, Hair Jawara at Art Partner using Dyson, make-up by Bimpe Onakoya, and the supermodel herself, styling assistance Raymond Gee, Christine Nicholson, Cari Pacheco, and Jennifer De La Cruz.

Houston rapper Travis Scott was the first cover revealed for i-D‘s Dystopian issue.

Venom’s Carnage Just Discovered a Sick Way to Spread His Symbiote

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Venom-Carnage: Infinity Comic #3, available now.

Carnage’s latest battle with Venom has once again caused mass symbiote infections. During the fight he merged with a dust storm, transforming into a massive giant that nearly destroyed all of Las Vegas. It was only thanks to Venom’s quick thinking that the storm giant was dispersed with a well-placed lightning bolt. But Carnage didn’t simply evaporate, the physical matter of his symbiote fell to the earth and blanketed everyone on the streets with it in Venom-Carnage: Infinity Comic #3, by Karla Pacheco, Scott Hepburn, Ian Herring and VC’s Joe Sabino.

He’s been mostly acting on his own since Knull was deposed. But the killer in Cletus Kasady was never going to stay idle for long. And now, he has a twisted new way to spread his murderous tendencies. Kasady has always strived to find new ways to take lives, and his symbiote is just a means of improving his range. He has killed, physically destroyed people’s minds to turn them into killers, but it’s rare for him to actually be able to affect so many normal people and turn them into carbon copies of himself.

And his actions are only worsening the public perception of aliens. As of late, the world has been through two separate alien invasions. One from the Cotati and another from Knull. The outcry against alien life on Earth is growing, resulting in the traditionally mutant-hating humans-first movement hate group known as the Friends of Humanity using the growing rage and hatred from the public to achieve political power and seize public offices within the United States.

Carnage’s continued attacks only add fuel to the flames, justifying this crusade against aliens. The Friends of Humanity are not simply against symbiotes, they are vilifying all aliens. The reality is, so long as humanity believes they have something to fear from aliens, someone will exploit that fear and turn it into anger for their own benefit.

But when has Carnage ever cared what other people think or how they react? To him, everyone is beneath his notice because they don’t share the same broken view of the world that he does. In fact, if he actually took the time to consider the consequences of his actions, Carnage might be amused and perhaps even a little vindicated. He believes the world is full of monsters who don’t deserve to live because they deny that they’re evil. So to see them turn against whole species because of his actions would probably make him feel like he’s right.

Hundreds of bills filed that could impact Texas’ Finest | CLEAT

On Friday, March 12, 2021, the deadline for members of the legislature to file new bills came and went. Members of the Texas House filed over 4,500 separate bills while members of the Senate filed over 2,100.

Of these, CLEAT has identified 110 bills that negatively affect law enforcement, the ability to do the job, or the benefits and working conditions that we officers deserve. An additional 200 plus bills are being closely watched to determine their impact on the law enforcement profession.

Below are the 19 CLEAT bills that have been filed as a result of our work with Representatives and Senators:

COVID-19

In addition to the COVID bills listed in the table above, Texas legislators have filed 11 additional COVID-related bills that would positively benefit first responders and their families.

Our number one concern this session is to ensure that first responders who have contracted COVID-19 are taken care of and given the support that is due. We are also fighting for the families of first responders who have passed away due to COVID-19. We want to ensure that the fallen officers’ families receive the workers compensation and line of death benefits they deserve.

In order to do that, we are seeking legislation that would provide a presumption that any first responder, peace officer, detention officer, or corrections officer who contracts/has contracted COVID-19 did so in the line of duty.

The goal is to retroactively cover anyone (listed above) who has been affected by COVID-19 since the pandemic first began. In addition, if the first responder or officer has died, their families will receive the workers compensation benefits they are owed.

The following bills seek to address issues with COVID-19:  (Links are to the bills on Texas Legislature Online)

Bill Number Bill Author Bill Summary
HB 3 Rep. Dustin Burrows Relating to state and local government responses to a pandemic disaster.

HB 34 Rep. Terry Canales (D) Relating to presumptive coverage for first responders that contract COVID-19.

HB 541 Rep. Jared Patterson Relating to a presumption in regard to the eligibility of public safety employees who have contracted coronavirus disease (COVID-19) for certain benefits.

HB 637 Rep. Terry Canales (D) Relating to certain claims for benefits, compensation, or assistance by certain public safety employees and survivors of certain public safety employees.

HB 1498 Rep. Armando Martinez (D) Relating to certain claims for benefits, compensation, or assistance by certain public safety employees and survivors of certain public safety employees.

HB 2073 Rep. Dustin Burrows Relating to quarantine leave for firefighters, peace officers, and emergency medical technicians employed by, appointed by, or elected for a political subdivision.

HB 4301 Rep. Jay Dean Relating to certain claims for benefits, compensation, or assistance by certain public safety employees and survivors of certain public safety employees.

SB 22 Senator Drew Springer Relating to certain claims for benefits, compensation, or assistance by certain public safety employees and survivors of certain public safety employees.

SB 463 Senator Eddie Lucio (D) Relating to certain claims for benefits, compensation, or assistance by certain public safety employees and survivors of certain public safety employees.

SB 527 Senator Drew Springer Relating to certain claims for benefits, compensation, or assistance by certain public safety employees and survivors of certain public safety employees.

SB 1401 Senator Drew Springer Relating to quarantine leave for firefighters, peace officers, and emergency medical technicians employed by, appointed by, or elected for a political subdivision.

Brady Lists

Another top priority is due process with regards to officers being placed on a “Brady List” by their District Attorney.

This happens when the department reports misconduct by the officer to the D.A. or when the D.A. independently makes the decision to put an officer on the list.

Once on the list, it effectively means that the officer is not considered credible and can’t testify in a criminal case being prosecuted by the D.A.

What does this mean for an officer?

Being placed on a Brady List can end an officer’s career if they are not able to file or testify in cases. The problem arises when a D.A. places an officer on a Brady List based on unsubstantiated or non-sustained allegations of misconduct.

Additionally, once an officer is on a Brady List, it is virtually impossible to be removed from the list, even if the officer wins an appeal regarding the allegations of misconduct.

What can be done?

CLEAT has tried to resolve this issue informally in the past but has run into roadblock after roadblock from all parties involved. During this session, we asked for legislation that would provide due process to officers placed on Brady Lists.

Since then, two bills have been filed that would provide officers a hearing through the State Office of Administrative Hearings (SOAH) if they felt they were unjustly placed on a Brady List.

Police Reform

As you can imagine, with the environment we are working in today, many legislators found the need to file some bill to address “police reform”.  Many center around the George Floyd case, but not all of them.  Bills were filed to address a wide range of issues. Space does not allow us to cover them all, but here are the ones we are most concerned with. Some are reasonable changes and others are not.

‘WandaVision’: Behind Agnes’ Grand Plans | Hollywood Reporter

So what does Agatha want? The answers may lie in two comic book limited series that weren’t previously mentioned as important to WandaVision’s building narrative: Scarlet Witch Vol. 1 (1994)  and Avengers Forever (1998).

The commercial in the latest episode of WandaVision is for an antidepressant called Nexus, a term that has a larger significance in the Marvel Universe. In the four-issue Scarlet Witch by Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett, with art by John Higgins, Wanda is revealed to be a Nexus-Being, a witch who represents the reality of that universe. In her case, it’s the 616 Universe (the designation for Marvel’s mainline comic universe). In terms of the Nexus-Beings classified thus far, their manipulation of probability and reality have distinct names individual to each being, Sorcery, Psychometry, Necromancy, Geomancy and Hex Power in Wanda’s case. No two Nexus beings can exist within the same dimension, which inevitably brings Wanda into conflict when an alternate reality version of herself, Lore, who enters her universe, on a path to conquer every dimension and claim their magical energies for herself. Lore tells Wanda, “Each of the universe’s innumerable dimensions has its own Nexus Being, one who personifies that realm’s character.” Wanda with the aid of her mentor, Agatha Harkness, manages to defeat Lore, ultimately increasing her own magical abilities, and preventing further destruction of the multiverse.

What’s interesting about Agatha Harkness’ appearance in WandaVision is that she seems to be an amalgamation of the comics’ version of Agatha and Lore. She wears a brooch similar to Agatha, and appears to have more experience in witchcraft than Wanda, but whereas Agatha in the comics is an elderly crone who serves Wanda’s ally, she appears as the youthful source of Wanda’s undoing in WandaVision. Agatha’s magic in WandaVision is manifested as a purple energy, as opposed to Wanda’s red energy. Not only does the color of her magic give her further ties to Lore, who wore only purple in her appearances, but it ties to the MCU’s Infinity Stones. Purple is, of course, the color of the Power Stone. While red, the color of Wanda’s magic, is the color of the Aether, or Reality Stone. Given Wanda’s ability to manipulate reality, it would seem that Agnes has the ability to manipulate and harness great power, setting the stage for a hell of a witch war by the culmination of the series.

Wanda’s invitation to Agatha’s house, the first time viewers have gotten glimpse of the inside, comes after Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) displays powers of her own, her molecular structure having changed within the hex, setting the stage for her eventual superheroics in Captain Marvel 2. While Monica will seemingly have her own encounter with Agatha’s witchcraft in the next episode, as a post-credit scene sees her encounter not-Pietro (Evan Peters), Wanda may be on her own in Agatha’s basement for the time being. Wanda’s search for her children, Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne), lead her to a cellar that looks straight out of a medieval castle.

The cellar is filled with magical artifacts, most notably a sinister looking book that may be the Darkhold, a book of Black Magic written by the demonic Elder God, Chthon, who possessed Wanda with the help of Mordred the Mystic in Avengers No. 185 – No. 187 (1979) by writers David Michelinie, Mark Gruenwald and Steven Grant, with art by John Byrne, who would of course later go on to destroy Wanda’s world, her marriage, and children, in the pages of West Coast Avengers. Is it possible that Chthon in the MCU will simply be another name for Mephisto, who might be Agatha’s husband “Ralph”? And if Evan Peters isn’t playing that role, then maybe, just maybe, Mordred has been reimagined as the son of Agatha and Mephisto? We’ll table that theory for now and turn back to Billy and Tommy.

Billy and Tommy are nowhere to be found in Agatha’s cellar, though it’s doubtful we’ve seen the last of them, as they could be the most powerful beings in the universe. In Avengers Forever, the twelve-issue comic book series by Kurt Busiek and Roger Stern, drawn by Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino, Space-Phantom, servant of the time traveling villain, Immortus (who is also the future version of Kang the Conqueror) reveals the truth about the threat the Scarlet Witch’s children represent in the eighth issue of the series. “The Scarlet Witch is your reality’s Nexus-Being – and thus almost as important, in her own way, as the Celestial Madonna. Any children she bears – they will be so powerful as to stand among the great forces of the universe – and will have the potential to rock the cosmos itself.” With Billy and Tommy at her disposal, Agatha has the potential to rewrite the universe, which explains why she’s been watching Wanda and Vision so closely. But she may not be the only one watching.

Nexus-Beings are closely monitored by the Time Variance Authority who monitor the multiverse. Because of Nexus-Beings’ ability to alter universes, unleashing threats that could destroy the whole multiverse, the Time Variance Authority, or TVA, culls universes deemed too dangerous to remain in existence. Their management of the multiverse has created long-term disputes with Kang the Conqueror, who has his own masterplan for the multiverse. The TVA is set to appear in the upcoming Disney+ series, Loki, which might have already teased in an appearance by Mephisto in the trailer. And Kang is set to appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he will be portrayed by Jonathan Majors.

Loki, Ant-Man, and the Wasp may find themselves dealing with the fallout of Wanda’s actions in their own adventures, their own forces of magic and science set in opposition to hers, even if indirectly at this point.

While WandaVision has largely been discussed in relation to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the third Spider-Man film, the latest episode suggests that Wanda may be the center of Marvel Studios’ Phase 4, the nexus for the MCU’s future, with ramifications felt by everyone from Carol Danvers to Peter Parker. As we prepare to head into the last two episodes of WandaVision, this series, which seemed to be an off-beat experiment on a smaller scale, may be the most ambitious narrative the MCU has attempted yet. And given the reception and weekly anticipation, we all seem to be caught under the spell.
