It turns out that popular online word puzzle game Wordle, that has been taking social media by storm, has an Indian connection.
Developed by software engineer Josh Wardle, the daily word puzzle offers users six chances to guess a randomly selected five-letter word. Every 24 hours, there’s a new word of the day.
The inspiration behind this hugely addictive game is none other than Wardle’s partner Palak Shah, a huge fan of word games and crosswords.
In an interview with The New York Times, Wardle revealed that the couple got into the New York Times Spelling Bee and the daily crossword during the first COVID lockdown in 2020. He then created this guessing game for Palak, and shared it with family and friends over WhatsApp.
Officially launched in October 2021, Wordle saw just 90 daily players in November. By January 2022, though, it crossed more than 300,000 daily players.

The Colorado Attorney General’s Office is investigating dozens of claims of price gouging against Marshall fire victims. Most of the complaints are about rent, department spokesperson Lawrence Pacheco said. Attorney General Phil Weiser declined to discuss specifics because the complaints are still under investigation.

While the law was adopted in the early days of the pandemic, in the wake of some resellers trying to get $15 for a single roll of toilet paper or $100 for 20 facemasks, it was written with future disasters in mind, bill sponsors said.
Following Marshall, it was less than a month before some tenants started reporting price increases on rentals. One family said their landlord declined to renew their lease in favor of a month-to-month arrangement until the spring, with a 10% increase in the meanwhile. Soon after the fire, Weiser urged online real estate marketplaces Airbnb, Zillow, Vrbo and REColorado to protect against “unscrupulous actors” who may be using the platforms to take advantage of Coloradans reeling from the disaster.
By design, the law does not have what Weiser called “bright red lines as to what illegal price gouging looks like.” It leaves his office tasked with evaluating whether the complaints are worth pursuing beyond the investigation. His office doesn’t generally report specific cases unless they prosecute or settle prior to a case being brought. Weiser had no timetable for when these cases might be made public, if ever. His office is looking into a couple dozen of claims, Pacheco said.
“Coloradans really are concerned about helping one another,” Weiser said. “The spirit of this law is to prevent people from preying on those at the times they’re most vulnerable.”
The law is intended to address circumstances that “can be pretty tricky,” sponsoring state Rep. Mike Weissman, D-Aurora, said. Legislators didn’t specify a hard-and-fast number that signals price gouging both to avoid aiming prosecutors at retailers facing higher costs themselves and not tip off bad actors to how far they can push. Weissman used the example of setting a 10% price increase as a marker and having gougers set their prices at 9.5% as a result.
“Sadly, we know we’re gonna see more (natural disasters) in Colorado, and I hope that what we don’t see in response to that is people trying to take advantage of those situations by ripping off people who’ve already suffered horrible loss,” Weissman said. “But if we do see that kind of behavior, it’s important to have a law on the books that can step in and create consequences.”
Fellow sponsor Rep. Brianna Titone, D-Arvada, said the floods of 2013 were on her mind as they worked on the bill. Colorado was one of 15 states with no law against price gouging when waters roared from the high country that year, killing nine people and destroying more than 1,800 homes across two dozen counties. In that disaster’s aftermath immediate, the Attorney General’s Office had little flexibility even as it acknowledged people might find the surge in prices “an outrage.“
Retailers just needed to be upfront about the cost, no matter what it was before the disaster struck. “The people affected by these disasters are impacted enough,” Titone said of the 2020 law to bar price gouging. “They don’t need to be worrying about being taken advantage of by profiteers.”
Weiser urged Coloradans who think they’ve witnessed or might be victims of price gouging to file a report with the Attorney General’s Office at 800-222-4444 or StopFraudColorado.gov.

CASPER, Wyo. — The City of Casper is negotiating with Oak View Group, which acquired Spectra Venue Management in November 2021, to extend an agreement for the management of the Ford Wyoming Center (formerly the Casper Events Center).
The city’s existing contract with Spectra for management of the Ford Wyoming Center is set to expire in November 2022, City Manager Carter Napier told the city council on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
Napier said that the amount the city has spent to subsidize operations of the Events Center have trended downward since Spectra took over management for the city. The city’s net operating losses averaged $994,919 per year in the three years prior to Spectra taking over management of the Events Center. Since Spectra took over, the city has averaged $922,996 per year in net operating losses, as shown in a memo from Casper Parks, Recreation & Public Facilities Director Zulima Lopez:

Spectra and city staff began meeting in September 2021 to negotiate terms to extend their relationship after Spectra submitted a proposal to extend its management of the Ford Wyoming Center for ten years, according to Lopez.
Napier told the council that some of the major changes being proposed are to establish a ten-year term of the agreement compared with the five-year term under the existing agreement. He said that Oak View Group/Spectra is also offering $350,000 in capital investments at the Ford Wyoming Center and an additional $50,000 in capital investments if the city renews with OVG/Spectra to manage Hogadon food and beverage service for an additional five years beyond July 1, 2027.
Management fees Casper would pay to OGV/Spectra for management of the Ford Wyoming Center would look similar to fees the city pays under the existing agreement, according to Napier. Management fees would start at $149,522 in the first year with annual increases based on the consumer price index (CPI). Napier noted that unlike under the existing agreement, price increases based on CPI would be capped at 4% annually.

Mayor Ray Pacheco said that he remembers discussion when the city initially considered contracting Spectra to manage the Events Center. He added that he is in favor of extending the relationship as the management company has apparently helped decrease the amount of subsidy the city is paying: “The numbers don’t lie.”
Council member Amber Pollock asked what the advantages to a ten-year agreement would be compared with extending the agreement for five years. OVG Regional Vice President Rick Hontz said that a longer agreement term would allow the company to invest more in the facility and would also be a benefit to long-term employees who would have a greater sense of the security of their future employment under a longer agreement.
The city council indicated support for moving forward with the agreement under the terms discussed on Tuesday. Napier told the council that staff would prepare a formal amendment to the city’s contract with OVG/Spectra for council’s consideration during a regular council meeting. Napier said it would be beneficial for the city to renew the agreement starting July 1, 2022 to have it coincide with the start of the new fiscal year rather than waiting to renew the agreement until fall 2022.
