BATTLE CREEK, Mich., Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) is pleased to announce the selection of Chamiza Pacheco de Alas as the new director of New Mexico programs, effective Feb. 1, 2021.
In this role, Pacheco de Alas will provide leadership and oversight of the foundation’s longstanding investments in New Mexico to further create conditions that ensure children and families have opportunities to thrive in equitable communities. Pacheco de Alas, who will be based in WKKF’s Albuquerque office (when COVID-19 health and safety restrictions are lifted), will lead the foundation’s statewide grantmaking priorities in collaboration and partnership with the New Mexico team, grantees, communities and other stakeholders throughout the region.
“Chamiza brings extensive leadership and experience in developing partnerships to this role,” said La June Montgomery Tabron, WKKF president and CEO. “As we continue to grow our longstanding collaboration with grantees and partner organizations in New Mexico, her deep knowledge and community perspective will accelerate our collective efforts toward thriving children, working families and equitable communities in the state.”
Pacheco de Alas has held various positions at the University of New Mexico (UNM). Most recently she was the chief of staff of the executive vice president at the UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC) in Albuquerque. In this role, she built and oversaw a diverse executive team. She was instrumental in creating a system-wide program of excellence in addressing child maltreatment, fostering partnerships to provide health care services to people experiencing homelessness, overseeing a behavioral health partnership to support student-athletes of vulnerable populations and managing a system-wide emergency health care response for recently released refugees. Pacheco de Alas also led state and federal policy strategies to advance measures that empower immigrant, Tribal and other vulnerable communities in New Mexico. These efforts resulted in the successful passage of several substantive health-related bills and approximately $45 million in new appropriations in 2019, and $15 million in 2020.
Previously, she was the director of community outreach at the UNM Health Sciences Center Office of the Chancellor where her dedicated racial equity principles within the health science community led to the successful engagement with medical experts and partners in Tribal, immigrant and refugee communities throughout the state. Pacheco de Alas also served as the associate university counsel at UNM Health Sciences Center where she was primary counsel to the University of New Mexico Hospital, a 400-bed facility that includes the state’s only Level I Trauma Center and Children’s Hospital, and adult and children’s psychiatric hospitals.
Prior to her roles at UNM, she served as guardian ad litem and youth attorney at Advocacy, Inc.; development, outreach and inclusion officer at United Way of Central New Mexico; and staff attorney for New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty.
Pacheco de Alas is actively involved in her community and has more than 17 years of board service experience. Currently, she is involved in several local and national organizations, including serving as a Trustee of the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation and the Albuquerque Academy and as a member of United Way of Central New Mexico’s Women in Philanthropy and Hispano Philanthropic societies; State Bar of New Mexico – Children, Health and Law sections; and UNM’s United Way Campaign Cabinet.
She is the recipient of numerous awards, including 1999 Harry S. Truman Scholar, 2019 Albuquerque Business Weekly 40 Under 40 awardee and UNM Regents Scholar.
Pacheco de Alas holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics/philosophy from the University of New Mexico and a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School. She is licensed to practice law in New Mexico and is conversant in Spanish.

Two Florida sheriff’s deputies who were in a relationship have died by suicide just days apart last week, leaving their newborn son an orphan.
St Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara announced on Tuesday the deaths of deputies Clayton Osteen, 24. and Victoria Pacheco, 23. They had served on the force since November 2019 and February 2020, respectively.
Pacheco Killed Herself After Osteen was Taken Off Life Support Following Suicide Attempt
Mascara said that shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve, the sheriff’s office recived a call about an attempted suicide.Investigators learned that the person who had tried to take his own life was one of their deputies, Osteen, who was off-duty at the time.
Osteen initially survived and was taken to a hospital, where two days later his family made the decision to remove him from life support. A day later, Osteen’s partner, colleague and the mother of his one-month-old son, Pacheco, took her own life.
Osteen was a retired US Marine, previously serving as a rifleman with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, having enlisted in May 2015. Osteen and Pacheco welcomed their first child together, a son, in mid-November.
‘A Tremendous Loss’
“While is it impossible for us to fully comprehend the private circumstances leading up to this devastating loss, we pray that this tragedy becomes a catalyst for change, a catalyst to help ease the stigma surrounding mental well-being and normalize the conversation about the challenges so many of us face on a regular basis,” Mascara said in the news release. “Words cannot express the tremendous loss we all feel after losing these two members of our family.”
It is not yet known what might have prompted the couple’s back-to-back suicides, nor how they died, but Sheriff Mascara noted in his statement that deputies often deal with “stress” and are “human.”
Friends and family members have now set up a GoFundMe page for the orphaned baby to ensure he has a “brighter future.”
“A true brother lost his internal battle,” Osteen’s friend, Ray Tourville, wrote on Facebook. “I struggle with finding the words to write that even remotely does him justice. I’m incredibly sorry that you felt this was your only option.”

Larry Harlow turned 82 years old on March 20. He was born in 1939 in Brooklyn, where music had always been his way of living and his upbringing as the son of a member of Latin orchestras and a Jewish opera singer. His name was Lawrence Ira Kahn.
He was known as ‘The Wonderful Jew’, remembered for his skills as a producer and pianist. He learned more of Son and other Cuban rhythms in Cuba itself, where he strengthened his musical knowledge for which he arrived from the mid-sixties.
He was part of the formidable Fania All Stars, which revolutionized the Latin music world with the impulse to the Caribbean rhythms that were registered as SALSA by Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci. Precisely, the founders of the Fania Records label, of which Harlow and his orchestra were the first to record there.
Throughout his musical career he had three singers who made history with his orchestra: Ismael Miranda, Junior González, and Néstor Sánchez. But his productions also included other figures such as Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Rubén Blades, Pete ‘Conde’ Rodríguez, Justo Betancourth and Adalberto Santiago. Precisely, he is credited with having been the one who took Celia Cruz to New York, who was in Mexico after her departure from Cuba.
With Miranda they strongly hit the market with songs like Guasasa (1970), Arsenio (1971), Abran Paso and Abandonada Fue (1972). In 1973, with Junior González the song ‘La Cartera’, perhaps the most remembered of Larry Harlow’s orchestra.
Another of the musical events of that time was the album ‘Hommy – A Latin Opera’, in 1973, which put salsa on another level due to the quality of its production.
He composed, directed, and produced for more than 150 albums by himself and other artists. He studied philosophy and trained as a sound engineer at the Institute of Audio Research in New York.
On February 15, Johnny Pacheco, creator of Fania, died, and on July 28, Johnny Ventura, who revolutionized Dominican merengue, died.
Upon hearing the news of his death, several of his friends and colleagues mourned his departure. Panamanian Ruben Blades said on his Facebook account:
“Just moved ‘to the other neighborhood’ my colleague and fellow ‘Fania All Stars’ member, Lawrence “Larry” Harlow, “El Judío Maravilloso.” (The Marvelous Jew).
“An innovative and powerful pianist, a knowledgeable and serious student of the history and development of Afro-Cuban music. Harlow was one of the initial artists signed to the Fania label and during his association with that label distinguished himself for his aggressive interpretation of ‘salsa’ and as a staunch advocate of ‘clave’.
“Larry was one of the most intelligent and intellectually prepared artists I met in New York. Possessing an acidic and direct sense of humor, he was a pleasure to converse with on any subject.
“He leaves ‘The Marvelous Jew’ but he leaves us his extensive contribution, something that will keep him alive in our souls and memories, always”.
Bobby Valentín recalled that “Larry was always a visionary in Latin music, especially in Cuban rhythms and son montuno”, to the point that “he promoted Latin rhythms more than we did ourselves”.
Colombian pianist Álvaro Cabarcas said on his Twitter account: “Goodbye Larry Harlow, sadness in salsa. The wallet stayed here”.
Harlow spent the last 32 days hospitalized. Shortly after his death, María del Carmen, the musician’s wife, wrote on Facebook: “My beloved Larry passed away at 12:30 a.m. due to complications as a renal patient that weakened his already exhausted heart”.
