Courage means different things to different people.
It can be as bold as skydiving or changing careers, or as seemingly simple as finding your voice and raising your hand in a meeting.
However you define it, courage is yours to find and a series of online workshops with local leaders hosted by the Aurora Black Community Association, is helping residents shine a light on the strength they have within.
Kicking off on January 15, and continuing on January 22 and 29, the Courage Is Possible Workshops look at “The Courage to Leave or to Say Yes”, “The Courage to Show Confidence”, and “The Courage to Lead.”
Local leaders bringing their views to the table include mental health advocate Karen Carrington, therapist Latoya Reid, business leader Sandra Ferri, and, among others, cultural leaders like Reccia Mandelcorn (The Aurora Public Library), Suzanne Haines (The Aurora Cultural Centre), and Nelia Pacheco (The Aurora Film Circuit).
“This is something that fits into my personal mission: What do I want to teach and pass on to people?” says Phiona Durrant of the Aurora Black Community (ABC) Association. “It really takes a lot of courage to do absolutely everything, even to get involved and volunteer for something. A lot of people have things inside them that they care about, whether it is work in the community or to lead, but we just don’t have the courage. We’re hoping that if we can even change one person and give them that green light it will enable them to find their own green light and get started. That’s how we’re going to make change in our community.
“There’s a lot of work to be done and I thought if we can start this year to help people find the courage to be a part of the change, then we’re helping them to be mentally, emotionally and physically ready because nothing is easy. Courage gives you the endurance to finish what you start. That’s the end goal: that people will be engaged and ready to implement or finish what they started.”
Once registered for Courage is Possible, participants can take part in the meetings via Zoom where they can interact with guest speakers and with each other in a safe and welcoming environment. If you’re not sure it’s for you, highlights from each session, respecting privacy, will be shared by the ABC via its social media platforms so viewers at large can still benefit from what is being presented.
Registrants, however, get the added bonus of interaction with the leaders well after the seminar is finished.
“We want people to be genuine and show up and everyone who goes to our website to register will have that private piece where they can be transparent about what they are trying to find the courage to do,” says Ms. Durrant. “We will have a safe space where people joining can speak genuinely and express their concerns and what they’re finding the courage to do. We will follow up with everyone who attends within two weeks of the workshop. In the workshop, we will have something to say, ‘I will start…’, ‘I will stop…’, and ‘I will be…’ and once they write it down in the workshop, we will follow up with them, they will be able to choose one of the speakers they want to follow up with them and that person can have that mentorship if they need it.
“Our next session will be on January 22 and it will involve the healing we need to get: how do we deal with those pains that prevent us from showing confidence? We will be talking about confidence, and how to be you and different. A lot of people are afraid to be themselves and we want to fit in.
“It doesn’t matter what your title is, we all need courage. We all have something we’re afraid to share, afraid to be vulnerable about. We all have a testimony and it is our responsibility to share that so we can deliver or release one other person who believes they are the only one going through this. During the pandemic, how do we find the courage to leave one career and go into another? During this time, how do we find the courage to say ‘yes’ to the call to run in an election? We’re afraid to do a lot of things. We don’t want to say ‘yes.’ We just want to give people hope and access to find courage – because I feel we all have it!”

CHARLTON — Local health officials have determined there has been in-school transmission of COVID-19 in one elementary school, though school officials report there has not been transmission of the virus to students.
Dudley-Charlton Regional School Superintendent Steven Lamarche notified parents in an e-mail on Wednesday evening of the findings, more confirmed cases of the virus, and changes to services at Charlton Elementary School.
“Through consultation with our local Health Director and Health Agent it was determined that we have evidence of transmission in the Charlton Elementary School. The identifiable evidence shows transmission amongst adults in the school,” Lamarche wrote. “We have no evidence of transmission to students. We also consulted with the Division of Epidemiology and Immunization at the Department of Public Health and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to review our findings and next steps.”
As the number of cases throughout the area continue to climb, and with the findings of transmission of the virus within the elementary school, Lamarche announced a temporary shift in that building to a remote learning model. Students at Charlton Elementary School will have remote classes on Thursday and Friday, the superintendent reported.
In a subsequent email notification from Charlton Elementary School principal Lori Pacheco, it was noted that “Students who typically attend school in person (cohorts B, C and D) on Thursdays and Fridays will learn remotely with their teachers,” while those “who are in Cohort A will continue with no change to their schedule.” Students whose schedule has been impacted would be contacted by their teachers with further information, Pacheco said.
In an effort to help identify potential cases of COVID-19, free testing for the virus is being offered to staff members.
“Through the efforts of the Charlton Health Director working with Harrington Hospital, starting tomorrow, we are providing free COVID testing for any employee in the Charlton Elementary School,” Lamarche said.
In addition to moving classes to a remote learning model, food services at the elementary school have also been impacted. Lamarche said all Charlton Elementary School food distribution for the remainder of this week will be moved to the Heritage School.
The superintendent also confirmed there were two new positive COVID-19 cases within the school district today, neither of which is connected to Charlton Elementary School.
As testing continues and the local fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic develops, local health and school officials remain in contact.
“We will meet daily with the Health Director and Health Agent to monitor current cases, evidence of transmission, and more forthcoming information with a focus on the current situation at the Charlton Elementary School,” Lamarche noted. “Any additional, needed changes will be communicated no later than Sunday, January 24, 2021.”

Music fans of a certain age may remember Jon Landau.
He was a rock critic in Boston who caught a concert at a local venue in the early 1970s and essentially launched the career of a then-struggling New Jersey singer/songwriter named Bruce Springsteen with the following turn of phrase in a review:
“I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the very first time.”
Of course, I’ll never claim to have Landau’s gift for writing, nor his obvious prescience. Though, 21 in-person Springsteen concerts later, I certainly can understand what he saw in the guy.
And I’ll concede – as I drove away from a Saturday night spent at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami – to having felt a similar jolt of professional enthusiasm, long before a walkover Canelo Alvarez main event.
But it wasn’t due to the efforts of any one fighter.
Rather, a handful of the principals in the seven undercard bouts leading to anticlimactic finale.
So, in honor of Landau, here’s my boxing-tinged translation of his musical masterpiece…
I saw boxing future and its name is Keyshawn Davis.
And Marc Castro.
And Diego Pacheco.
And on a night when I needed to feel young, they made me feel like I was watching fights for the very first time.
When they’re combined 12 rounds against the surely overmatched, but at least somewhat capable Lester Brown, John Moraga and Rodolfo Gomez Jr. ended I could only think, can anyone really be this good? Can anyone say this much to me so soon? Can lightweights, super featherweights and super middleweights still perform with this kind of power and glory?
And then I glanced at the notes that I’d made and knew that the answer was yes.
Davis, for one, does it all. He is a boxer, a puncher, a bully, a tough guy, a humble technician, a gritty dog, and a truly great all-around performer considering he’s now had precisely one pro fight.
He works a ring like he has been doing it forever. I racked my brains but simply can’t think of a recent 135-pounder who did so many things so superbly so soon after the opening bell of a career.
Simply put, there is no one whose progress I would rather watch in the weight class today.
Castro, meanwhile, made it clear from the start of his ring walk that he was in Miami to both perform and punish. He used footwork and movement while establishing his jab and working the body, all the while looking as calm as if he were in a routine sparring match — not in his second career fight on a live-streamed production featuring the sport’s most recognizable commodity.
Combinations began flowing and Moraga was on the floor within a half-minute, a trend that continued throughout the first and into the second as the Californian landed more frequently and more powerfully.
Finally, a still-teenage Pacheco may have taken the most pivotal career step of the night, graduating to eight rounds, and maintaining momentum even as the gutty Gomez produced a competitive push beyond anything mustered by 10 previous opponents who’d combined to provide 24 total rounds.
The East L.A. native is no wonder to look at. Gangly, and barely looking old enough to drive – let alone his almost 20 years (the birthday cake arrives next Monday) – he nevertheless patrols the ring with the presence of a decade-long veteran, not a relative novice in his 11th fight after turning pro at 17.
Every jab and cross adds to an ultimate goal — to dominate with his own brand of precise violence.
Many try to leave a mark. Few succeed. And none more recently on the prelim level than this trio.
And let’s not forget – though his foe was an unmitigated disaster – just how good Alvarez is, too.
He’s earned consensus billing as the world’s top fighter for a reason that extends far beyond the prolonged promotional boost he’s gotten from the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and, now, Eddie Hearn.
A mere 15 when he started in 2005, the precocious Mexican icon was a champion by 20, shared the marquee for one of history’s biggest pay-per-views at 23, and has since chased greatness across multiple weight classes while developing a skillset that’s begun to attract all-time praise from those who’d know.
“Far more cosmic and multi-talented than I at first envisioned,” said Jim Lampley, who called a handful of Alvarez’s fights for HBO. “But his kind of intelligence shows up more and more over time.
“And you can say exactly the same thing in exactly the same terms about Eddy Reynoso. Chicken/egg. Both about as good as it gets.
“Counterpuncher by origin nature becomes indomitable attacker when he wants to be? Fewer than a dozen in history of boxing. A superstar with epic historic impact.”
It’s Monday evening now and I’m watching a replay and my memory of the fights have made me feel a little giddy. I still feel the spirit and it still moves me.
Last Saturday, I remembered that the magic still exists and as long as I write about boxing, my mission is to tell a stranger about it — just as long as I remember that I’m the stranger I’m writing for.
