After one-year hiatus, big times return to Big Fresno Fair

Big times are back at the Big Fresno Fair after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the opening ceremonies kicked off Wednesday afternoon, however, city and county leaders were presented with an unexpected dose of Anthrax.

The heavy metal band arrived into town later than planned and were conducting a sound check in the Paul Paul Theater just as the ceremony kicked off in the adjacent Save Mart Beer and Wine Garden, which added musical tones that did not exactly fit the pomp and circumstance of the setting.

Nevertheless, the long list of speakers persevered in the face of being drowned out and were excited to have the fair once again after missing out last year.

Ryan Jaconbsen, the CEO of the Fresno County Farm Bureau and the emcee for the ceremonies made light of the situation in between speakers.

“I do have to say I am amazed,” Jacobsen said. I didn’t know heavy metal people actually sang. I thought it was just screaming into the microphone. I’m impressed that you could actually hear words right now to a certain extent.”

“I’ve just got to say that I never knew that I’d ever be be able to perform live with Anthrax,” added Brian Tatarian, President of the Friends of the Big Fresno Fair Board.

“This is great. This really makes my resume – it’s a real pop.”

The heavy metal tones hit their peak right in time for the honoring of former fair CEO John Alkire.

Alkire retired last August after being the top dog for 17 years. During his tenure he “completely transformed the fair forever,” in the words of Big Fresno Fair Board President Jerry Pacheco.

“John, your legacy here will live on in how you have reshaped the grounds, from the upgrades of all the fair’s entrance gates, improvement to our horse racing facility that puts us on par with the top tracks in the state, to where we are now with the whimsical attractions of the Table Mountain Rancheria Park along with the tractor trailers,” Pacheco said.

“But I know two projects stand out above all the rest: That’s the Big Fresno Fair Museum and our Fresno County Historical Museum, along with the historic signs you have brought to life that surround the Paul Paul Theater.”

Pacheco presented Alkire with a certificate from Gov. Gavin Newsom which recognized his career in service to California.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer noted the many former Fresno Fair CEOs that he has worked with over his career, but said there is no one better than Alkire.

“Nobody has his passion, has his vision and has his heart for this fair,” Dyer said. “That’s why he’s gone out and raised so much money. And as you walk around the fair this year and you look at so many things that are here, it’s because of his passion, it’s because of his vision.”

Dyer also discussed the economic impact the fair has on the local community, making over 500 seasonal hires and bringing in over 600,000 guests annually.

“It provides a lifetime of memories for people who bring their families out here from a very young age and people that continue to take advantage of this incredible venue,” Dyer said. “And the truth of the matter is for many families this is the amusement park of their choice. We have a lot of amusement parks in California, but this one rivals many of the greats.”

Fresno County Board of Supervisors Chairman Steve Brandau thanked the fair for partnering with the Department of Public Health and opening up the county’s largest COVID-19 testing facilities at the fairgrounds last year.

Fresno City Council President Luis Chavez continued the discussion about the difficulties Fresno had over the pandemic but was encouraged with the city’s ability to move in a positive direction with the fair and showcase the best that Fresno has to offer.

“We went through a very difficult year last year,” Chavez said. “Great times are back here at the Fresno Fair, and this one’s going to be better because whenever they try to put us down we come back stronger.”

MARTINEZ FACES ARROYO ON CANELO UNDERCARD

Julio Cesar Martinez will defend his WBC World Flyweight title against McWilliams Arroyo as the chief support to Canelo Alvarez’s defense of his WBC, WBA Super and Ring Magazine World Super-Middleweight titles on Saturday February 27 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, live worldwide on DAZN (except Mexico).

TICKETS GO ON PRE-SALE TODAY (TUESDAY JAN. 26) FROM 2PM ET VIA TICKETMASTER AND ON GENERAL SALE FROM 2PM ET ON WEDNESDAY JAN. 27 – TICKETS START AT $55 (PLUS FEES) – FANS CAN VISIT FOR MORE DETAILS

Martinez (17-1 13 KOs) puts his title on the line for the third time since landing the belt in December 2019 in a thrilling stoppage win over Cristofer Rosales, outpointing Jay Harris in Dallas in February and blasting away Moises Calleros in two rounds in Mexico City in October.

The all-action Mexican is raring to finally face his mandatory challenger Arroyo after having to pull out of a proposed clash with the Puerto Rican through illness in August. It is a huge night for the all-action champion, who turns 26 on Wednesday, as he finally gets to fight as the chief support to his stablemate Alvarez, whom he also shares a trainer and manager in Eddy Reynoso, after illness ruled him out of fighting on his card in December in San Antonio.

“I am so happy to be back in the ring again and I promise you a war with Arroyo in Miami,” said Martinez. “With the unification fights ahead of me, it is important to take care of my mandatory challengers and I expect a tough fight with Arroyo. I believe that 2021 will see me unify the division and become undisputed and I can’t wait put a smile back on boxing fans faces.”

Arroyo (20-4 15 KOs) has been ready to pounce on his shot at the title and win a World strap at the third time of asking. The decorated Puerto Rican amateur was edged out via split decision by IBF champion Amnat Ruenroeng in September 2014 and then fell to pound-for-pound star Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez in April 2016 for the WBC and Ring Magazine crowns in California.

The 34 year old ranked at number one in the WBC enters the bout on the back of three wins in 2019 having returned to Flyweight from a brief stint at Super-Fly, and the former World Amateur Champion is determined to end the talented Mexican’s reign in Miami.

“Finally, the fight is near, and I am sure the fans will enjoy another classic between Mexico and Puerto Rico,” said Arroyo.

“This will be another great classic between Puerto Rico and Mexico,” said Arroyo’s co-promoter, Miguel Cotto. “I am sure they will provide the fans a great fight and McWilliams will be prepared to rip that title away and bring it back to Puerto Rico.”

A stacked undercard in support of Alvarez also sees Chinese Heavyweight star Zhilei Zhang make a quick return to action over ten rounds against Jerry Forrest.

Zhang (22-0 17 KOs) is back in the sunshine state after stopping Devin Vargas in four rounds in their clash in Hollywood, Fl. in November, and the 37 year old giant will look to take another step towards securing a huge fight in the glamour division with victory over Forrest (26-4 20 KOs), who took Carlos Takam the distance in his last outing in July.

“I’m very excited about this fight,” said Zhang. “February 27 is the highest profile card of the first quarter of 2021, and it will be an honor to be part of it. I can’t wait to get in the ring and wish the best of luck to my opponent Jerry Forrest. I am training full force. I will be ready.”

“Zhang is a good fighter with great size and technique, but I’ll be ready for this fight,” said Forrest. “2021 is a new beginning for me. Covid has made training difficult with many gyms shut down, but I’ve stayed in shape since my last fight. I’m now up at my manager’s gym in Ashburn, Virginia, and my trainers have been creating a game plan while bringing in sparring partners to match Zhang’s size and style. I’m excited about this opportunity and am looking forward to ending Zhang’s unbeaten streak.”

A host of young talents get the chance to shine on the card, led by Diego Pacheco. The rangy teen has raced to 10-0 with eight wins inside the distance, and the Super-Middleweight sensation will look to add another impressive win when he takes on Rodolfo Gomez Jr (14-4-1 10KOs) over eight rounds.

“I am excited to be back under the bright lights,” said Pacheco. “2021, it’s time to show everyone I’m here and I’m a problem for anyone at 168lbs.”

Alexis Espino (6-0 4 KOs) had a frustrating end to 2020 after losing out on two fights, but the 21 year old is ready to put that behind him and get 2021 off to a flier against Ashton Sykes (5-3 KOs)

“I am more than ready to fight on this amazing card and show what I been working on aside from the time I spent away,” said Espino. “it was a frustrating time for me at the end of 2020, but I am itching to finally show how much work I have been putting into this since I haven’t been in the ring due to recent cancellations.”

Former amateur sensation Marc Castro got his pro career off to the perfect start on Canelo’s undercard in San Antonio with a KO win, and the Fresno star goes again in Miami against Lester Brown (4-2-3 1 KO).

“I am ready to get back in the ring and I want thank God and my team for making it possible for being a part of the pound-for-pound king Canelo’s undercard once again,” said Castro.

Another successful amateur making his second appearance in the paid ranks is Miami’s own Aaron Aponte. The 19 year old won via stoppage on debut in October, and Aponte will showcase the his talents on a huge platform in his hometown.

“I’m super excited to be fighting at the Hard Rock Stadium on February 27 on the undercard of boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez” said Aponte. “It’s an honor to fight on such a massive event in my hometown and I’m very grateful to Matchroom and DAZN along with my manager Peter Kahn and the Fight Game Advisors Team for this opportunity. Stay tuned for the rise of Aaron ‘Alien King’ Aponte!!”

“This is a stacked undercard in support of the pound-for-pound king,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Julio Cesar Martinez is fast becoming a must-see attraction in the sport and an impressive win here will take him to another level – but McWilliams Arroyo is up for the challenge and is a dangerman.

“Zhilei Zhang can stake his claim for a massive fight at Heavyweight later in the year with victory over Jerry Forrest, and it is fantastic for the young talents on the card to be able to perform on this huge stage.”

COVID economy: Layoffs jolt tech, hotel, restaurant, retail sectors – Times-Herald

A tech firm, hotels, restaurants, and a big retailer are among the latest companies to detail their layoff plans to state officials, a grim reminder that economic woes during the coronavirus recession have yet to run their course.

The latest round of planned and upcoming job cuts in and near the Bay Area indicate that the region’s workers must brace for fresh bouts of unemployment, a tough blow that arrives on the heels of 10 months of coronavirus-linked business shutdowns.

Among the layoff plans disclosed to the state Employment Development Department:

— Analog Devices, a semiconductor company, will eliminate 255 jobs in Milpitas.

— Lucky Chances Casino laid off 489 workers in Colma.

— California Grand Casino disclosed a decision to lay off 181 workers in the East Bay city of Pacheco.

— Ventana Big Sur, a famed hotel and resort, 115 jobs in Big Sur.

— Carmel Valley Ranch, a hotel and resort, 151 jobs in Carmel.

— Il Fornaio America, a Corte Madera-based dining chain with 21 restaurants, is laying off 347 workers. The company didn’t specify which of its restaurant locations would be affected.

— The Fish Market revealed plans for layoffs affecting 107 workers, including 54 in Santa Clara and 52 in Palo Alto.

— King’s Seafood revealed the layoffs of 123 workers employed in its San Jose restaurant at Westfield Valley Fair.

— Safari West, a private wildlife reserve near Santa Rosa, disclosed temporary layoffs affecting 73 workers.

— Rosewood Sand Hill, a Menlo Park hotel and resort, decided to temporarily chop 51 jobs.

In a number of instances, executives with the employers blamed coronavirus-linked problems for their employment cutbacks or facilities shutdowns.

“The COVID-19 pandemic initially prompted numerous restrictions on travel and group meetings that resulted in a drop in our business,” Sean Carney, general manager of Ventana Big Sur, wrote in a WARN letter to the EDD. “As a business that caters to global travelers and hosts large events around the world, this pandemic impacts us immensely.”

Ventana Big Sur stated that for a time during 2020, it appeared business would stabilize. The hotel, perched on hills a short distance from the Pacific Ocean in scenic Big Sur, suspended operations in March and re-started operations on July 19. Ventana Big Sur is one of the Hyatt hotel chain operations.

Similarly, Carmel Valley Ranch, another hotel and resort in Monterey County that’s owned and operated by the Hyatt firm, was hopeful when it reopened in late June after shutting down in March.

The Carmel resort, hotel, and golf complex discovered that it was apparent the economic effects of the deadly bug remained severe and wouldn’t soon relent.

“While there were encouraging signs that our economy could begin to reopen in some areas, it has now become clear that the demand for travel, events, and hospitality services will take substantially longer to resume than previously anticipated,” Peter McMahon, managing director of Carmel Valley Ranch, stated in a WARN notice to the EDD.

One employer, tech company Analog Devices, said its employment cutbacks weren’t related to the coronavirus but instead its industry situation. The first layoffs will begin by Feb. 19 and be complete by the end of October of this year, Analog Devices told the state labor agency.

“Analog Devices maintains a facility in Milpitas located at 275 S. Hillview Drive,” James Chalmers, an Analog Devices executive, stated in a letter to the EDD. “Changing business needs require us to close this facility permanently.”

Stovetop Stuffing Meatloaf Recipe

Stovetop Meatloaf

Slightly sweet and comforting, this Stovetop Meatloaf Recipe utilizes premade stuffing mix in place of breadcrumbs. A sweet ketchup glaze tops it all off for a hearty ground beef main dish.

Stovetop Meatloaf

Meatloaf is a classic winter staple around here. My Amish Meatloaf has been a long time favorite, but when I saw this recipe for Stovetop Stuffing Meatloaf intrigued me enough to try it out. The results were delicious!

I liked that it was less sweet overall than my Amish Meatloaf and it had the added perk of holding together better overall to get those nice, clean slices. It was great to try a new recipe for meatloaf after having used the same recipe for so many years straight now.

Shocking footage shows moment Russian strikes hit factories in Mariupol

A shocking video shows the moment when a Russian strike hit factories in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which started on Feb. 24, has drawn international condemnation, led to financial restrictions on Moscow, and spurred an exodus of global firms from Russia.

At least 780 civilians have been killed and 1,252 injured in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, according to the UN, while noting that conditions on the ground make it difficult to verify the true number.

Over 3.2 million people have also fled to neighboring countries, said the UN refugee agency.
