10 Must Read Marvel Comics For Christmas | CBR

Christmas is a joyous time of year but sometimes all of that family togetherness can get to be a bit much. It’s the perfect time to curl up with some good comic books and take advantage of the days off work. With all the stress of shopping and cooking, comics can be just what the doctor ordered and Marvel has some great stories out there that can be perfect to help one unwind.

Whether it be a brand new comic or something from their voluminous back catalog, Marvel has comics to fill those long winter nights with excitement and entertainment. With Hawkeye shooting some Christmas magic at the MCU, there’s never been a better time to read through some of Marvel’s best holiday comics.

The Dark Ages Is An Amazing Alternate Universe Story

The Dark Ages, by writer Tom Taylor and artist Iban Coello, is halfway through its six issue run and already one of Marvel’s best titles. After using an EMP to stop an attack by an ancient being known as the Uncreator, the Earth is completely without electricity. The heroes help build a new society, one that is threatened when Apocalypse decides to make a play for ultimate power.

Taylor is killing it everywhere right now and The Dark Ages is proof of just how great he is at this sort of alternate universe fun. Coello’s art is the perfect accompaniment to Taylor’s script. This is a great story and Christmas is a wonderful time to catch up with it.

Hulk #1 Is A New Era For The Jade Giant

After the success of The Immortal Hulk, Marvel tapped superstar creators writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Ottley to begin a new Hulk book. Hulk #1 dropped on Nov. 24, but it’s already a smash, with fans loving this new take on the Hulk. Cates has proven how great he is with Marvel’s heroes and Ottley’s years of creating amazing superhero slugfests on Invincible make him the perfect artist for a Hulk book.

After the more horror oriented direction of its predecessor, Cates looks to be taking the Hulk back to his roots as the monster that just wants to get away and Ottley’s art is just out of this world. Getting in on the ground floor for this one is the way to go.

Hellions #18 Is The End Of An Era

The Krakoa era of X-Men comics have some beautiful gems and massive missteps, but one book that always impressed was Hellions. This amazing title is about to come to an end on December 1st and the eighteenth issue, by writer Zeb Wells and artist Stephen Segovia, closes the book out in epic style. As the team deals with a problem within its ranks, an old foe returns.

Hellions has been delivering the best stories of just about any Krakoa era X-Men book, blowing away the vast majority of the line with its mixture of action, humor, and spot on characterization. While it’s sad Hellions is coming to end, the last issue should be a banger.

Avengers Forever #1 Takes A Multiversal Approach To The Avengers

Marvel’s multiverse isn’t as developed as their distinguished competition, but that doesn’t mean it’s without merit. Avengers Forever #1, by writer Jason Aaron and artist Aaron Kuder, gathers a team of Avengers from across the multiverse in order to battle the Masters of Evil, a group of Avengers foes from many universes who have come together to conquer everything. Dropping on December 22nd, Avengers Forever #1 comes out just in time to alleviate those holidays blues with a tale of the Avengers of many universes assembling against the most deadly foes in creation.

Wolverine: The Dying Game Spotlights One Of Wolverine’s Most Creative Periods

Wolverine is one of the most dangerous mutants on Earth, but there was a time when he wasn’t as invincible as he is right now. After the loss of his adamantium skeleton, Wolverine had to relearn how to fight and deal with his mutation, which is the crux of Wolverine: The Dying Game. Reprinting Wolverine #87-100, Wolverine: Knight Of Terra, and Wolverine ’95, it’s a forgotten gem.

Written by the incomparable Larry Hama, as well as Christopher Golden, John Ostrander, and Ian Edginton with art by Adam Kubert, Duncan Rouleau, JH Williams III, and more, The Dying Game contains some very different Wolverine stories and is perfect for those those December nights.

The Original Avengers Forever Is Best Kang Story Of All Time

Kang has been a big deal again since his MCU debut, with fans searching out the best stories about him. They need look no further than Avengers Forever, by writers Kurt Busiek and Roger Stern and artist Carlos Pacheco. Starring a team of Avengers from across time trying to stop the end of all things, the comic showcases Kang and his future self Immortus. Avengers Forever is essential reading for any Avengers fan and is the best Kang story of them all. The book also contains a great Avengers history lesson, something that will make any fan understand and love Earth’s Mightiest Heroes all the more.

New Mutants #23 Continues The Team’s Shadow King Epic

Another gem of the X-Men line is New Mutants. Writer Vita Ayala and artist Rod Reis have been crafting an amazing story and December 1st’s issue 23 is the newest installment. Pitting the New Mutants and their students against the telepathic titan Shadow King, #23 promises to be another masterfully crafted issue.

The New Mutants have long been one of the premiere young mutant teams and Ayala is killing it on the book. They’ve not only done amazing work with the characters but have really played up the sense of family and community that has always underpinned the book. Reis brings an abstract style to the art that’s reminiscent of ’80s New Mutants alum Bill Sienkiewicz.

Squadron Supreme Is One Of Marvel’s Greatest Masterpieces

Marvel can’t really compare to DC when it comes to genre redefining tales. They do have one that can stand up against the greats – Squadron Supreme, by writer Mark Gruenwald and artists Bob Hall, Ron Frenz, and John Buscema. The Squadron Supreme was originally created as a Justice League analogue from an alternate universe for the Avengers to beat on, but this story takes them to new heights.

Squadron Supreme deals with mature themes heretofore unseen when it was published in 1984 and sees the team take over their world in order to build the perfect society. This twelve issue series is a gem that every comic fan should read.

The Hawkeye Omnibus Is The Perfect Holiday Gift

With the premiere of Disney+’s Hawkeye, it’s time to take a look again at the inspiration for it. The Hawkeye Omnibus, by writer Matt Fraction and artists David Aja, Javier Pulido, and Jesse Hamm, tells what is easily the greatest Hawkeye story of all time, with Clint Barton And Kate Bishop taking center stage and trying to save their apartment building and its residents.

With the MCU series taking everything from this book and giving the creators little to no credit, now’s the perfect time to buy the Hawkeye omnibus and put some money into the creators’ pocket from the royalties. Marvel Studios doesn’t treat comic creators well, but consumers can by buying their work.

Inferno #3 Is The Highlight Of The X-Men Line

Jonathan Hickman began the X-Men’s climb back to prominence with House Of X/Powers Of X and now he’s leaving with a bang. So far, Inferno has been the best thing Marvel’s putting out and the third issue, with art by R.B. Silva, drops on December 8th. As things come to a head on Krakoa, Nimrod strikes and all of mutantkind is in danger.

Hickman is the best thing to happen to the X-Men in years and Inferno is his swan song. Nothing being put out by Marvel can compare to it and the X-Men line is going to be sadder place without him. Inferno is amazing, though, and the third issue promises to be just as great.

Cops search 4 Colorado locations in election security probe – Sentinel Colorado

GRAND JUNCTION |  A law enforcement task force searched four western Colorado locations amid an investigation into allegations that an elections clerk was involved in a security breach of elections equipment earlier this year, a district attorney said.

The FBI, the Colorado Attorney General’s office and local authorities conducted the searches Tuesday in Mesa and Garfield counties, Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein told Colorado Politics.

Rubinstein didn’t disclose the locations that were searched. But Tina Peters, the elections clerk for Mesa County, which includes the city of Grand Junction, said her home was searched, the Colorado Politics media outlet reported.

“The FBI raided my home at 6 a.m. this morning, accusing me of committing a crime,” Peters said. “And they raided the homes of my friends, mostly older women. I was terrified.”

The FBI office in Denver and Lawrence Pacheco, spokesman for Attorney General Phil Weiser, didn’t immediately respond Wednesday to emails seeking comment about the searches.

The searches came amid an ongoing dispute between Peters, who presided over elections in conservative Mesa County in 2020, and Griswold, a Democrat and vocal presence nationally for ensuring election integrity.

Peters has become an advocate for those who believe, without evidence, that the 2020 election was fraudulent — although she has said elections in Mesa County, which voted overwhelmingly for Trump, were secure and accurate

Colorado Politics reported that Peters commented about the searches during an appearance on an online channel operated by Mike Lindell, the MyPillow CEO and a supporter of Peters and former President Donald Trump who has repeatedly made discredited claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

Peters, a Republican, is being investigated by the FBI and by Colorado state officials state in an alleged breach of elections equipment in Mesa County in May. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat, successfully sued to have Peters and a deputy, Belinda Knisley, prohibited by a judge from administering the November mid-term election. Peters has denied any wrongdoing.

Knisley was subsequently suspended and charged with felony second-degree burglary and a cybercrime misdemeanor count by Rubinstein’s office. Knisley also has denied wrongdoing.

The Grand Junction Sentinel reported that an arrest warrant affidavit alleges Knisley entered a “building or structure with intent to commit a crime against another person or property.”

Griswold sued to remove Peters as county clerk and recorder after Griswold said images of election equipment management software from Mesa County were obtained by elections conspiracy theorists and posted on far-right blogs.

Griswold’s office has said one of the images was taken May 23 from inside a secure room in Mesa County where the voting equipment was stored and had been accessed that day by Peters, who allowed a non-employee into the room.

After Griswold filed the lawsuit, Peters was absent from Colorado for several weeks, only appearing publicly in broadcasts hosted by Lindell. Peters claimed that Griswold’s investigation is an attempt to take over one of the few remaining conservative counties in Colorado.

Griswold’s office has identified the person it says was allowed into the secure room but has refused to say anything more about who he is or why he was there. The Associated Press isn’t naming him until more information becomes available. He has not been charged with a crime.

Transatlantic cooperation: The path to sustainability Event summary

Collaboration and innovation are key: that is the view of our expert panel on how the US and EU can tackle climate change through making agriculture more sustainable while providing enough food for a growing population. It was the topic of our latest event in Brussels where the panel debated the new transatlantic cooperation agreement between the US and the EU, launched on November 3.

Transatlantic-pic-1

There were many questions around the new agreement. How do the US and Europe see it? How can it work in practice? What about trade barriers and imports? And why is this the right time?

Dialogue is needed now

Climate change is the top issue facing agriculture – and a transatlantic dialogue is needed now more than ever to enable US and EU efforts towards climate-friendly farming. Mark Titterington, our moderator, opened the debate saying: “Such a dialogue can help drive the agenda on agriculture, enable agriculture to meet the challenges that it faces in relation to farm profitability, productivity, greater resilience, sustainability and particularly the environment, and enable agriculture to respond to and mitigate some of the challenges of climate change.”

Joao Pacheco, Senior Fellow at Farm Europe, highlighted: “The US and the EU share agreement that it’s urgent to mitigate climate change and adapt to the consequences.”

Common goals and challenges

The new cooperation rests on the US and EU having common goals on agriculture and the climate. They may take different pathways to reach them, said US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, and the new platform is a place to exchange knowledge and information and to promote mutual understanding and trust on the journey.

The US is committed to developing and deploying new technologies, new practices and new methods in agricultural production: “The US stands behind the importance of science-based, data-driven decision making… we must also guard against trade barriers and restrictions that are not based on science.”

Both continents have many challenges and opportunities in common, said EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski, so it is vital to share knowledge and solutions. This common ground includes farm size; lack of digital connectivity in rural areas; and the challenge of building a more resilient food chain after the pandemic exposed the vulnerability of food systems on both continents.

Europe will learn vital lessons as it transitions to greener food production under the Farm to Fork strategy, and it is important to share this knowledge with the US more fluently than before, said Mr Wojciechowski. “As two of the largest agri-food producers, importers and exporters in the world, the US and the EU are in a strong position to lead this change.”

The right moment?

But why is this the right time for this collaboration? And what signals do our panellists hope the transatlantic cooperation will send?
The US and EU have a responsibility to step up to the climate challenge and the challenge of feeding an ever-increasing world population, and do it in a sustainable way, said Mr Vilsack.

And Mr Wojciechowski added: “Like in the song, tomorrow will be too late.” He said that in one decade, Europe has lost four million family farmers because they simply could not compete in a culture of intensive agricultural production. Policy-makers need to give farmers’ families the chance to develop data-driven farms and sustainable agriculture such as organic production – all without reducing food production.

Agriculture – part of the solution?

The panel looked at the fundamental question of whether agriculture is the problem, or whether it can and should be part of the solution to climate change.

Mr Vilsack was clear: agriculture can gain quick wins. “The key is being able to measure and quantify the results that we obtain from climate smart agricultural practices and then to be able to translate that into some kind of market opportunity for farmers that creates a financial incentive,” he said.

Mr Wojciechowski highlighted carbon farming, saying it was vital to support farmers to introduce data from sustainable agricultural practices. He also said short supply chains are crucial to agriculture’s contribution on the climate.

The key question is not what the goals are, but how agriculture on both continents can get there through innovation. This was the view of Paolo De Castro, Member of the European Parliament, Committee for Agriculture and for International Trade. More time and money needs to go into considering new technologies, such as gene-editing to improve plant breeding, he said.

View on US farmers

Are US farmers and ranchers interested in embracing the sustainability agenda – and are they able?

With an emphatic ‘Yes’, Mr Vilsack said he expected so see “very significant action” from US agriculture, including farmers and ranchers.

“There has been a sea change in the US agricultural community to the point that farmers and the food system have joined together in an alliance to promote the need for large-scale commitments of demonstration projects and pilots to really learn more about exactly how climate-smart agriculture works and to quantify and measure the results of it,” he continued.

The difficult topics

In the past, collaboration between the US and the EU has not always been smooth, said Mr Titterington. How would the cooperation agreement enable progress on topics such as trade, or R&D?

Mr Wojciechowski’s view was that having the platform would actually help to avoid difficulties such as in the past, for example on tariffs. And Mr Vilsack said there will be innumerable ways in which the platform can allow for meaningful knowledge exchange. He highlighted a sensor technology that allows farmers to identify crop areas that do not need any fertilizer, asking: “Is there an opportunity to work collaboratively to make that kind of sensor technology available and affordable to farmers across Europe and across the US?”

Dairy and livestock with zero methane?

The prospect of livestock farming without massive methane emissions was brought up by Mr Vilsack. Significantly reducing the methane emissions connected to livestock farming was a better option for the world than curtailing production, he said. Technology could offer ways to reduce and re-use methane – for example, feed additives to cut the amount of methane produced by the cow, and the ability to capture methane to convert it to fuel. “The US has dairy farmers who believe that with the right kind of technology they can get to net zero in a matter of years,” he said.

How to engage consumers?

Educating consumers was highlighted by Mr De Castro: “The problem is to try to explain to our consumers, to our public opinion that we need more science… good technologies, innovations.” He was optimistic about the acceptance of technology, saying that because of the pandemic people have become more aware of science. Farmers also have a responsibility to educate, and it needs to start with young people, said Mr Vilsack.

Closing the event, Thierry de l’Escaille, Secretary General of the European Landowners’ Organization, said that common and ambitious goals on will require a constant exchange of knowledge and information, along with common standards. “By setting out the common objectives and intent… we are perhaps taking the most important step.”
