BernCo commission seat draws large field – Albuquerque Journal
The race to represent the eastern-most reaches of Bernalillo County is drawing a crowd this year.
The County Commission’s District 5 – which extends from Uptown into the East Mountains – is currently represented by Democrat Charlene Pyskoty, who is wrapping up her first term.
Pyskoty, a mental health therapist, is seeking reelection. She will face a Democratic challenger in Eric Olivas, who owns a landscaping and plumbing business and was former chair of Albuquerque’s Civilian Police Oversight Agency.
Three others are running to represent District 5 in the Republican primary, according to filing information on the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website. They are Michael Eustice Jr., who owns a small remodeling and home repair company; retired educator and Singing Arrow Neighborhood Association board member Judy Young, and Wayne Yevoli, who did not immediately respond to a Journal inquiry Tuesday.
Nicholas Bevins, a community activist who ran last fall for the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education, is pursuing the District 5 seat as an independent.
The other County Commission seat on this year’s ballot is District 1. Currently represented by Democrat Debbie O’Malley, who cannot seek another term, it includes the North Valley and a large swath of the West Side.
Barbara Baca, onetime city of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation director, and Erin Muffoletto, external affairs manager for Comcast, have filed as District 1 candidates in the Democratic primary.
Michaela Chavez, who has a financial firm, is pursuing the seat as a Republican.
This year’s sheriff’s race in Bernalillo County is wide open because Sheriff Manuel Gonzales is term-limited and can’t seek reelection.
Twelve candidates are seeking their respective party’s nomination for the post, seven Democrats, four Republicans and one Libertarian.
Democrats filing for the post are Philip A. Snedeker, Lawrence G. Koren, Sheridan J. Lund, John D. Allen, Patricio R. Ruiloba, Rudy B. Mora and Matthew R. McCoy. Vying for the Republican nomination for sheriff are Paul A. Pacheco, Dereck Alan Scott, Joshua James Ryan Lawrence and David T. Bibb.
The candidates prevailing in the Democratic and Republican primaries will face off against Libertarian Kaelan Ashby Dreyer in November’s general election.
The 2022 elections will also determine the next Bernalillo County assessor, as the current office-holder, Tanya Giddings, is term-limited out.
Two Democrats are running: Damian Lara, a past deputy county assessor and the city of Albuquerque’s onetime deputy director for economic development, and Stephen A. Sais, who has worked in the assessor’s office for the past 18 years and is currently its residential manager.
Incumbent Probate Judge Cristy Jo Carbón-Gaul is the only person to file as a candidate for that office.
No Republicans filed to run for open judge seats in Bernalillo County.
In state court, two contested judicial primary races have shaped up in the 2nd Judicial District in Bernalillo County.
Former Metropolitan Court Chief Judge Edward Benavidez is challenging incumbent District Judge Bruce Fox for the Division 10 post.
Attorney Emeterio Rudolfo is challenging incumbent Judge Jennifer Wernersbach in Division 16.
Incumbent judges will run unopposed for five other posts in 2nd Judicial District Court. They are: Alma Roberson, Catherine Begaye, Elaine Lujan, Britt Baca-Miller, and Joseph Montano. All filed as Democrats.
Two candidates will run unopposed for Metropolitan Court judicial posts. They are incumbent Judge Joshua Sanchez, and Judge Nina Safier, an Albuquerque attorney recently appointed to a vacant seat who is scheduled to be sworn in March 14. Both are Democrats.
The 2022 primary election is June 7.

Entertainment Industry Con Faces 20 Years for Defrauding Investors in $650 Million-Dollar Scheme – Lowe & Associates
On October 4th, 2021, Zachary Joseph Horwitz, a Los Angeles actor, pled guilty to one count of securities fraud in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Horwitz, also known by his stage name, Zach Avery, admitted to raising $650 million from investors by leading them to believe that he had licensing deals with major companies such as Netflix and HBO, when he, did not actually.
As part of the scheme, Horwitz and his company, 1inMM Capital LLC, “borrowed money” from investors in return for “promissory notes,” and falsely represented that he would use the money to acquire certain film distribution rights, with the intention of licensing them to online streaming platforms, such as Netflix and HBO. Promissory notes may be considered a “security,” like stocks. In reality, Horwitz had no such arrangement with Netflix or HBO. In furtherance of his plan, Horwitz created fake and forged distribution agreements and licensing agreements to mislead investors into believing the companies had already committed to deals with his company. When payments on the promissory notes were missed, Horwitz reassured investors that their money was safe. In fact, Horwitz had never actually done business with HBO or Netflix.
Defendant used the $650 million to maintain his lavish lifestyle, payback prior investors, and create a façade that his business was legitimate and successful. In December 2019, Defendant began to default on the loans; when the dust settled, his investors lost $230 million dollars. The defendant was arrested by the FBI in April 2021 and is facing up to 20 years in prison.
The government is represented by David H. Chao of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California’s Major Frauds Section.
Horwitz is represented by Anthony Pacheco and Ryan Hedges of Vedder Price PC.
The case is USA v. Zachary Joseph Horwitz et al., case number 2:21-cr-00214, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Various Artists – It’s a Good Good Feeling: The Latin Soul of Fania Records
Beyond its worth as a lovingly packaged set of irresistibly energetic music – either spread across four CDs or condensed to two LPs – Craft Latino’s newest tour of the Fania vault is invaluable as a study of the 20th-century American melting pot in action. While the process of assimilation and adaptation often diluted the proverbial pot’s contents elsewhere in the nation, the unique conditions in New York continually yielded rich results. What could have been a thin soup was instead a chunky stew, the constituent morsels still recognisable yet entirely complementary. In the case of the city’s preeminent purveyor of Latin music, the ingredients – whether their origins were black, white, Cuban, Puerto Rican or much else besides – yielded a meal that was tasty as hell.
Founded in 1964 by bandleader Johnny Pacheco and lawyer Jerry Masucci, Fania was not New York’s first label to serve Latin-American listeners and performers but it soon became the dominant one. Consisting of 89 A-sides and B-sides released between 1965 and 1975, It’s A Good, Good Feeling reveals the rapid rate of development as the growing roster of acts synthesised styles to create the sound that became world-famous as salsa (even if its progenitors couldn’t agree on what the term meant). Fania showed its slippery nature in its earliest releases, which included both Pacheco’s turbo-charged charango and the doo-wop of 125th Street Candy Store, whose 1965 single Silent Ways launches this set.
When the comedy act Tom And Jerrio hit the Top 20 with Boo-Ga-Loo that same year, Fania was quick to get on the bandwagon while continually demonstrating what else could happen when R&B, soul and pop got Latin overhauls. The first Fania single for one of the label’s future giants, Joe Bataan’s Gypsy Woman is one of many landmark releases here, Bataan transforming The Impressions’ hit into a mambo-fuelled stormer. By the beginning of the next decade, Fania’s greats – most of whom would soon join forces in Fania All-Stars, a supergroup so super that their first concert drew 40,000 fans to Yankee Stadium – had soared far beyond boogaloo, creating a pan-Latin, peculiarly Nuyorican fusion that was equally ecstatic and complex.
While It’s A Good, Good Feeling makes for a satisfying showcase for the Latin soul of heavy-hitters like Bataan, Willie Colón and Ray Barretto, many tracks may be discoveries even to the Fania faithful. The fact that two of the latter – El Apollo Sound’s Spinning Wheel, which replaces the bluster of Blood, Sweat & Tears with Havana-ready panache, and Butter Scotch’s Today, an airy take on Philly Soul – are both so different from the explosive salsa that was the label’s signature proves the Fania saga is a continually surprising one.
