Magnificent Mullets in Comic Books

Mullets are back, y’all. Whether you like it or hate it, the 1980s and 1990s mainstay haircut has made a sort of comeback of late, seeing its greatest resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was probably an inevitability, as everything old eventually becomes new again. That, combined with a mixture of hair experimentation brought about during the quarantine, and the mullet or some variation of it is here to stay—at least for a bit. (Full disclosure: I had a mullet in the 1980s and I’m regrowing one now. It’s been a year, folks. Live your life.)

Comic books once embraced the mullet; they generally try to keep up with the times, after all. And while look back on hairstyles of the past and chuckle, future generations will do the same to us. So looking at the following list of comic characters sporting “business in the front, party in the back” is meant to poke fun a little, sure, it’s all in good fun. A good portion of us are currently mulleted wonders at the moment, anyway. (This is not meant to be an exhaustive list in the least, so feel free to sound off in the comments!)

Rogue

One of several X-Men on this, Rogue’s mullet is quintessential 1980s: huge bangs, flowing waterfall in the back. Rogue’s trademark white strip just makes it look more punk and it’s striking.

Invisible Woman

Susan Storm-Richards had just experienced intense trauma up and down, which prompted her to change her name from Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman. During that same time, she changed up her ‘do from the 1960s coiffure she’d kept for years to something a little more contemporary (for the time). Classic mullet: cropped closed on the top and sides, full locks in the back.

Tony Stark/Iron Man

When you have that much money, you can do whatever you want.

Longshot

The second X-Men member on the list, Longshot is from an alien world who teamed up with the team in the 1980s. With that collaboration, the X-Men were treated to a rocking coiffure. His neck’s never getting cold.

Superman

Back in the 1990s, the Man of Steel perished at the hands of the alien powerhouse known as Doomsday. He got better because comics, and when he inevitably returned, he sported a mullet that puts Billy Ray Cyrus’ to shame.

Rachel Summers/Phoenix

X-character #3! Rachel was the daughter of a future version of Cyclops and Marvel Girl, tapping into the Phoenix force just like her mother. When she came to the present, she was sporting a hybrid mullet/flat-top, because, apparently, the writers knew that fashion would loop back again to the Kentucky waterfall.

Lois Lane

This entry comes from just a few years ago, rendered by the talented Carlos Pacheco. Lois’ mullet here more closely resembles some of the more “modern mullets” we’ve seen the last couple years, with the whispy strands and choppy layers.

Bishop

The fourth X-Men member on the list with a mullet, and the second from the future, Bishop came on the scene in the early 1990s, sporting a thick mane in the back that anyone growing out a mullet these days would–and should–envy.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man

Peter has had varying degrees of mullet-tude over his career, but the permed one is maybe the best, if not most iconic. Look at those full waves! Spidey is stylin’ and profilin’.

Captain Planet

You can’t have a list of superhero mullets and not mention Captain Planet. That green mullet was as lush as the vegetation he and the Planeteers hoped to save. Honorable mention is Wheeler’s (far right) orange Mississippi Mudflap.

Eddie Brock/Venom

Back in the 1990s, Eddie Brock, the human side of Venom, sported a mullety hairdo, because you gotta look stylish when you’re being menacing.

Quasar

Quasar was an Avenger and the Protector of the Universe back in the 1990s. If you’re wearing so many hats, you have to look good while doing it. That feathered mane is a thing of glory–one might even say “out of this world.” * groan *

Rick Jones

Rick was a running buddy of the Hulk’s for decades and, eventually, headlined his own band. If you’re in a band in the 1980s and 1990s, it’s the law that you have to sport the “business in front, party in back” look.

Nightwing

In both the comics and on Batman: The Animated Series, the Dark Knight’s former sidekick had his own glorious mullet. And why wouldn’t he? Mullets scream fun, and Nightwing is one of the more happy-go-lucky characters in the Batman universe.

What are some of your favorite mullets in pop culture? We wanna know!

Fishermen Fight Off Pirate Attacks in Ecuador

Fishermen Fight Off Pirate Attacks in Ecuador

Fishermen in Ecuador have taken matters into their own hands to combat pirate attacks that have long plagued the nation’s coastal provinces.

On June 28, media outlet Ecuavisa reported that fishermen had set fire to a boat docked at the port of Santa Rosa in the western coastal province of Santa Elena. The vessel had reportedly been used several times by pirates to steal motors from fishing boats at sea.

The fishermen claimed to have attacked due to authorities failing to prevent maritime crime, according to Ecuavisa.

SEE ALSO: Ecuador’s Cocaine Pirates: Part I

A day after the attack, fishing union representatives met with Santa Elena’s governor, Fulton Edulfo Anchundia Pacheco, members of the navy and police to demand that the fishing sector was recognized as being in a state of emergency.

At the meeting, Ramón González Suárez, a local fisheries cooperative leader, detailed how pirate attacks had plagued the port for years and that officials had done nothing to resolve the problem.

In response, authorities promised to step up maritime controls and asked fishermen to report attacks to the Attorney General’s Office, the media outlet added.

In January of this year, pirates raided seven fishing boats off the coast of Santa Elena’s port of Anconcito, also located in the canton of Salinas, Expreso reported. During the robbery, heavily armed thieves reportedly stole six of the seven boats and 15 engines in total, leaving one fisherman injured.

Groups of heavily armed pirates working along Ecuador’s western coast have targeted small fishing vessels for years to steal their motors, which are in high demand and sell for thousands of dollars on the black market. As InSight Crime reported, these engines are then often used onboard boats transporting drugs.

InSight Crime Analysis

Engine theft by pirates has plagued the coast of Santa Elena and other Ecuadorian provinces for decades, raising questions over why authorities have failed to target the crime.

Those who want to avoid attack must pay pirates $100- 150 per month for their safety, according to a 2019 report from El Comercio. Those who resist are often killed or injured at sea during robberies.

Speaking in 2019, González shared how for over 25 years, fishermen working from Santa Rosa had been subjected to robberies, assaults and extortion, but that no substantial security plan had been put forward.

While authorities have opened investigations and proposed carrying out reactive patrols in some provinces, little has been done to substantially target the problem. This has meant some fishermen are now deterred from reporting attacks, adding another layer to a vicious circle.

And while attacks off the coast appear to have been somewhat reduced during the pandemic, they remain a concern to fishermen who risk their lives and have scarce economic alternatives.

Pacheco Wins Everett Invitational, Launching to No. 4 in World Standings – News

By: Mandi McCary

EVERETT, Wash. – As the first-ever PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast (UTB) event in Everett, Washington, came to a close on Wednesday night and the 2022 world title race intensified, 2018 PBR World Champion Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) went back-to-back, collecting his second consecutive event title after going 2-for-2 inside of the Angel of the Winds Arena, winning the PBR Everett Invitational.

Just one week after a sweeping win in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Pacheco was a man on a mission in Everett.

Launching from No. 6 in the world standings as the night began, Pacheco concluded the one-day event in Everett as the No. 4 man in the world.

With just four UTB events left in the season before the start of the 2022 PBR World Finals on May 13 in Fort Worth, Texas, the former World Champion is now 189.5 points behind world leader Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil). Vieira was shut out in Everett as the incredible animal athletes of the PBR dominated all but nine cowboys.

Sitting just 96.34 points behind Vieira, world No. 2 Daylon Swearingen (Piffard, New York) had a rough night in Everett just like the world No. 1, being bucked off of his Round 1 bull and not making it through to the championship round.

“Kaique’s moving up the world standings. He’s a man on a mission and just may be the man to beat,” said CBS Sports Network Commentator J.W. Hart. “Nothing is missing in his armor. He sees where they’re going. He tracks them. He’s not locking up. He’s doing everything exactly pinpoint perfect.”

As Wednesday began, Pacheco was paired with Surprise Package (Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) for Round 1.

He fired out of the chutes for 89 points to win the opening round, his third consecutive round win.

Selecting Pookie Holler (Dakota Rodeo/ Brian & Ashley Pintar/ Clay Struve/Chad Berger) as his opponent for the championship round, the stoic Brazilian was the last rider of the night.

Pacheco had the raucous Washington crowd at full volume as he was in complete control, delivering a picturesque 91.75-point ride to clinch the win, as well as an additional round victory.

“I’m so glad for the point I’m at now,” said Pacheco, having conquered 12 of his last 14 matchups. “I started low this year. I worked really hard. I’m at a good spot on the standings.”

While two other riders, Chase Dougherty (Decatur, Texas) and Brady Fielder (Clermont, Queensland, Australia), went 2-for-2 on Wednesday night, Pacheco emerged victorious with an aggregate score of 180.75 points. He collected 137 world points and a check for $51,936.67.

Dougherty finished second to earn $24,667.17 and 86.5 world points. He rose to the No. 9 spot in the world standings after coming into the weekend at No. 13.

Early on Wednesday evening, Dougherty was paired with Facetious (Paradigm Bull Company) for Round 1. His 88-point score punched his ticket into the championship round.

The 23-year-old Texan then chose Marquis Metal Works Red Clark (Paradigm Bull Co/ Wentz) as his opponent in the final round. Red Clark, a formidable choice, had not been ridden since early January in New York City.

Doing the near impossible, Dougherty bested the powerful animal for 90.5 points.

Australia’s Fielder claimed third place at the inaugural event at Angel of the Winds Arena.

Earlier in the night, he was paired with Cold Shot (Jeb Fredericks/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) in Round 1, collecting an 82.75-point score and greenlighting himself into the championship round.

The 22-year-old young gun then chose The Punisher (Jeb Fredericks/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) for the final round, matching Dougherty’s 90.5 points.

Fielder collected 65.5 world points and $14,821.17 for his 2-for-2 performance, moving him from No. 26 in the world standings as the event began to No. 19 as it rolled to an end.

Paired with Buckeye (Howell Rodeo Company Inc./ Cow Punch Productions, LLC.) in Round 1, Dener Barbosa (Paulo de Faria, Brazil) rocketed from the chutes to collect an 87.5-point score.

Barbosa then selected Drago (Jeb Fredericks/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) for the championship round, knowing he needed to move himself up the leaderboard.

Coming down hard after 7.18 seconds, Barbosa collected a fourth-place finish for the night and maintained his hold on the No. 11 spot in the world standings.

For his efforts, he collected 38 world points and a check for $7,948.33 for his 1-for-2 night.

Austin Richardson (Dallas, Texas) rounded out the Top 5 of the event, also with a 1-for-2 performance.

Richardson was paired with Soup in a Group (Wilks Ranch/ Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) in Round 1, recording 86.5 points. In the championship round, his selection of Mezcal (Paradigm Bull Co) had the crowd cheering, but he was dispatched just short of 8 seconds.

Despite the championship round buckoff, the Texas cowboy earned 33 world points to move from No. 15 in the world standings to No. 14.

Local fan favorite Derek Kolbaba’s (Walla Walla, Washington) night ended early after he was bested by Skeeter Peter (Dakota Rodeo/ Mark Baker/ Clay Struve/Chad Berger) in a mere 2.96 seconds, which meant he did not advance to the championship round.

Ridin Solo (Cord McCoy/ Bill McCarty) earned the YETI “Built for The Wild” Bull of the Event title after his matchup with Keyshawn Whitehorse (McCracken Springs, Utah). The exceptional bovine athlete was marked 46 points after launching Whitehorse to the dirt in 6.4 seconds.

Cyberpunk 2077 Changed Gaming – (but not how we thought)

Cyberpunk 2077 has been one of the craziest launch windows in Gaming History. Lawsuits, investor anger, pulled from stores, refunded en masse… and so much more. The government steps in… the company loses value, but the stage is set for a silver lining as this game might have finally broken through the veil between investors, management, developers, and gamers.

Ultimately some good will likely come of it all, with a game (in the end) that deserves your time. I spend so much time on the negative… Id like to try and see the positives here.

Liberty drops second straight ASUN series

The Liberty Flames picked up a midweek win on the road at Duke on Tuesday, but the Flames would drop two out of three at Jacksonville over the weekend. Liberty is now 17-9 overall and 4-5 in ASUN play ahead of a challenging slate this week.

With the team and starting rotation’s recent struggles, skipper Scott Jackson switched up the look of his starters this week. The Flames turned to freshman Garrett Horn on Friday, Trey Carter on Saturday, and moved Joe Adametz from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, catcher Gray Betts and center fielder Derek Orndorff returned to the lineup for the weekend series at Jacksonville after clearing concussion protocol.

TUESDAY: LIBERTY 9, DUKE 2

Leading 3-2, Liberty struck for six runs on six hits in the top of the ninth. Three Hillier walked and moved to third on a double by Cameron Foster to open the inning. Logan Mathieu was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Two batters later, pinch hitter Drew Baughman singled through the right side of the infield, plating Hillier for a 4-2 advantage. Jake Lazzaro followed with a bunt single to score Foster for a 5-2 lead. Mathieu had a three-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Flames the lead.

Relievers Mason Fluharty and Dylan Cumming combined to hold a one-run advantage. Brady Gulakowski had two hits and two RBIs for the Flames.

FRIDAY: JACKSONVILLE 6, LIBERTY 1

Making his Friday night debut, Garrett Horn kept the game tight through the early innings. His counterpart, Mason Adams, would keep the Flames on the scoreboard as he pitched 7.1 scoreless innings. Trailing 1-0 with two outs in the top of the fifth, Logan Mathieu doubled off the top of the right field wall to keep the inning alive. Jake Lazzaro followed with a ground ball that was misplayed by JU second baseman Jesus Pacheco, putting runners on the corners. However, Adams was able to get catcher Gray Betts to ground out to keep the Flames from tying the contest.

The Dolphins would add two insurance runs in the 6th and three in the 8th before Liberty finally got on the scoreboard with one run in the 9th.

SATURDAY: LIBERTY 6, JACKSONVILLE 2

Liberty pitchers set the tone for the night, combining to limit Jacksonville to two runs on four hits in the contest. The five Flames struck out 16 and walked 2. Aaron Anderson had a game high three hits to go along with an RBI and run scored in the contest. Jake Lazzaro tied the game in the fourth with a two-out, two-run single.

After the Flames took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, the first two Dolphins to bat in the bottom of the inning walked. The Flames went to the bullpen for Fluharty, who immediately struck out the first batter he faced for the first out of the inning. The left-hander then hit the next batter, loading the bases. Fluharty would put an end to the scoring threat and preserved the Flames’ advantage by striking out the next two batters.

SUNDAY: JACKSONVILLE 11, LIBERTY 7

For the first time on the weekend, Liberty struck first, as Aaron Anderson’s bloop single with two outs scored Derek Orndorff from the third in the top of the third. The Dolphins would tie the game in the home half of the third on a single and two Liberty throwing errors. The Flames would score three in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, but the wheels would fall off in the 5th as Jacksonville came storming back to score 6 runs and take a 7-4 lead.

Liberty wouldn’t go down without a fight though. The Flames would tack on one run in the sixth and tie it up at 7 with two more runs in the 7th. Jacksonville would strike back with four runs in the 8th to take the 11-7 lead they would not relinquish.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LOGAN MATHIEU

With the Flames trailing 2-0 and riding a two-game losing streak, Logan Mathieu blasted a ball over the fence in Durham against Duke on Tuesday afternoon. His hit scored three runs and gave the Flames the lead at 3-2. On the week, Mathieu finished the week 6 for 15 with three runs scored and 4 RBIs to go along with that home run.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: MASON FLUHARTY

Fluharty has quickly become Liberty’s top pitcher out of the bullpen, and he has the ability to go a few innings and be that gap from the starters to closer Cade Hungate. Fluharty pitched two scoreless innings on Tuesday at Duke, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. In Saturday night’s win at Jacksonville, Fluharty struck out 8 in three innings while allowing just one hit without giving up a run.

ON TAP

On Wednesday, Liberty will take the short trek to Charlottesville to take on Virginia. The Cavaliers have been one of the top teams in the country so far this year. They have a record of 25-3 overall and 9-3 in the ACC and are ranked in the top 5 of the country by all major media top 25 polls.

The Flames return home after the five game road trip for a weekend ASUN series against Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles have been one of the best teams in the ASUN through the first half of the season. They are currently 20-8 overall and 7-2 in conference play. FGCU took two of three at home this past weekend against previously unbeaten in ASUN play Kennesaw State in a meeting of the top two teams in the ASUN’s East Division.
