Poás volcano (Costa Rica): sudden explosive eruption yesterday morning came without warning

View of Poás volcano the morning before the eruption with visitors near the crater where it occurred later at night (image: OVSICORI-UNA)

An eruption occurred yesterday (7 April) morning at 2.42 a.m. local time from the volcano’s crater northern area. The event lasted about 3 minutes and generated a steam plume that rose 500 m from the crater to approx. 3200 m altitude.

There was apparently no warning for the eruption, which came without detectable precursors, such as increases seismic activity, an increase in temperature at the fumaroles or other geophysical changes. During other eruptions of Poás, the temperature at the northern crater rim’s fumaroles often had been seen increasing from 100 to 900°C, volcanologist Javier Pacheco from Costa Rica’s monitoring agency OVSICORI-UNA explained in an interview with La Nación. This had not been the case yesterday. As the eruption seems to have not involved any new magma, but almost purely ejected steam, it was likely a phreatic (steam-driven) explosion.

It is actually rather typical that such phreatic explosions occur with little or no warning at an active volcano: Fluids, water and gasses, contained in the subsurface system of cracks and cavities normally form a circulating system that allows heat and excess gasses that can no longer be stored in solution to be transferred to the surface, where degassing takes place, often in the form of fumaroles or hot crater lakes.

If this system is disturbed, however, for example if pockets of fluids become blocked or overheated, they might suddenly explode into steam or overcome the strength of the surrounding conduit and generate violent explosions, that involve no magma itself, but eject steam and fragmented rock material as well as large blocks to considerable distances. Such sudden eruptions are the largest near-area hazard at active volcanoes that are currently not erupting.

New Mutant History Revealed On Krakoa Today (Krakoan X-Men Spoilers)

New Mutant History Revealed On Krakoa Today (Krakoan X-Men Spoilers)

Today sees a bunch of Marvel X-Men and X-Men related titles, including a regular issue of X-Force and an X-Force Annual, the first in four months, as printing and distribution schedules clash. We have a launch for X-Men Red and Marauders. And a new X-Men Unlimited story, with references abounding in other titles.

In X-Force #27, the Beast finally gets properly called out for being the monster he is, in front of the Quiet Council, by Sage.

And naturally, he’s not happy.

While in the X-Force Annual, as the team takes on an Orchis plant at the instruction of The Beast…

He gets similar treatment from Emma Frost.

And Emma Frost’s diagnosis is in the ballpark of the Sage advice he’d previously received.

As the reasons for the team mission he sent his X-Force team of X-Men on, are slowly revealed.

Sorry Beast, you reap what you sow. Talking of which, In X-Men Red, Vulcan Summers is acting up on Mars/Arakko with representative of the Shi’Ar.

He has plenty of history with the Shi’Ar Empire of course. But maybe that history goes even further back?

A previous emperor but no longer, and rather bitter about the whole thing, as one might be. While the new Marauders have some other issues with the Shi’ar Empire they might want to raise. Even if they have to use a monster like Cassandra Nova to interpret it.

And it will take a telepath like Psylocke to confirm it.

That before Krakoa, before Arakko, before Apocalypse, there was a first race of mutants on Earth, And they have been held by the Shi’ar all this time. It might also give new light to the involvement with the Shi#ar, the Imperial Guard and the Majestrixes, with the X-Men for all these years as well.

Worth remembering at this point that the Starjammers were a group of space pirates formed by Scott Summer’s father, Corsair, in the slave pits of the Shi’ar Empire. Peace came after a regime change, Corsair was murdered by one of his other sons, Vulcan, during Vulcan;s reign (though of course got better. They are still hanging around as well, in today’s Captain Marvel Annual…

And Fantastic Four #42…

While the Fantastic Four are also in Shi’Ar space. I wonder if they’ll run into each other? Shi’Ar space is not, after all, what it once was.

Seriously, they are all over the place right now.

There are also some questions to be asked regarding resurrections. Not just on Krakoa, it seems that in She-Hulk, certain folk can act like the Krakoan Five when it comes to artificial life.

While there are questions to be asked about resurrecting mutants and monsters. As seen at the end of the Trial Of Magneto, Thunderbird is back in X-Men Red #1.

Omega Red is back in X-Force #27.

Cassandra Nova is back in Marauders #1.

And discussion regarding the both of those revivals is intense, and confirmed that Mister Sinister is not a natural mutant, but only as his body is a clone of himself and Thunderbird. Just as his time-resetting duplicates are clones of himself and Moira Mactaggert.

Though not everyone on Arakko/Mars has to be a mutant either.

And on X-Men: Green, Nature Girl may be going through her own changes. Again.

Not just having an antler lopped off… say if they’ll bring Cassandra Nova and Omega Red back to island, why not Nature Girl as well?

Woman’s ‘light extinguished’ as she is sixth trans person killed in 2022

A woman who fled Honduras to Texas in search of a better life has become the sixth trans person killed in the US in 2022.

Paloma Vázquez, a spirited activist who sought refuge from transphobic violence, herself became the latest victim of what experts have described as an “epidemic of violence”.

The 29-year-old with big dreams of a life without fear was shot to death in her southwest Houston Apartment on Dunlap and Clarewood street on 26 February.

According to the Houston Police Department, the door to the property was unlocked with no signs of forced entry when officers arrived at around 8pm. She was discovered by her boyfriend and appeared to have been deceased since the morning.

Vázquez had emigrated to Texas some six months ago, her friends recalled in conversations with ABC 13. She was “very excited about decorating,” one recalled, having only recently moved into her new apartment.

“As most trans women who are here from Latin America, they are here because they are scared of being killed in their own country,” the friend, Gia Pacheco, said.

“Whenever a trans person is killed, they are killed because they are trans.”

According to Sin Violencia LGBTI, a regional information network, more than 1,100 trans and non-binary people were killed in Latin America from 2014 to 2020. At least 208 LGBT+ people were slain in Honduras.

But beyond graphs and spreadsheets, the victims of such anti-LGBT+ violence are people, wrote Ana Andrea Molina, the founder of Organización Latina de Trans en Texas of which Vázquez was a member. And that must never be forgotten.

“Our hearts are mourning the loss of another fellow transgender whose light was extinguished in an aggressive and hateful way,” she said.

“Our pain and sorrow should be a call to our community to unite and find the killer.”

The Houston-based group organised a memorial event for Vázquez on 3 March outside Houston City Hall.

With Texan politicians ‘determined to attack’ trans people, homicide rates flare

In the US and less than three months into the year, at least six trans, non-binary and gender-conforming people have been violently killed, according to the Human Rights Campaign which has been monitoring the wave of brutality since 2013.

But documenting the violence is one riddled with difficulties, given that two-thirds of trans homicide cases are misgendered and deadnamed in police and press reports, the HRC found. Meaning that the HRC’s tally is likely even higher.

It comes after last year’s record-breaking death tally of at least 57, many of them Black trans women. The record continues to climb even months after the year’s end, as more victims’ deaths are discovered by grassroots activists combing through local news reports and talking to relatives.

To be trans in America, activists warn, is to juggle survival with day-to-day living.

Struggling with higher levels of homelessness, poverty and unemployment, trans people also face higher risk; three-fourths of confirmed homicides against trans folk have involved a gun, according to the Transgender Homicide Tracker.

Texas is, according to Montrose Grace Place, a non-profit that supports queer homeless people, “one of the deadliest places in America for trans women”. And in the Lone Star State, among dozens of others, trans people are also facing legislative attacks against them.

Only days before Vázquez was killed, Texas governor Greg Abbott launched an attack against trans youth, comparing gender-affirming healthcare options to “child abuse“.

He went on to send a chilling directive to the state’s child protection agency to investigate the parents and guardians of trans youth for such misconduct, touching off fear and frustration among the trans community.

“We’ve already recorded nine cases of fatal violence in Texas since last year, with the latest recorded only last month,” said Tori Cooper, who helms the HRC’s Transgender Justice Initiative, in a statement.

“With politicians in Texas determined to attack the transgender community, we must call on our allies to stand up and speak out.”

According to the Trans Formation Project, a legislative tracker, there are more than a dozen proposed laws targeting trans youth in statehouse dockets.

“They are killing us,” Molina wrote on Facebook. “Today was Paloma, maybe tomorrow it will be me.”

In 2022, the community has so far mourned: Amariey Lej, Duval Princess, Cypress Ramos, Naomie Skinner and Matthew Angelo.

Comedian Paul Rodriguez: Will Smith was abusive on the set of ‘Ali’

In the wake of Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock in the face after he made a relatively mild joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair, comedian Paul Rodriguez is speaking out, saying he was targeted by the actor’s dark side on the set of the 2001 film “Ali,” where Smith played the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, Inside Edition reports.

“When he turned around [after the slap] — that smug, that look like that. I’ve seen that look before. I feel like I got slapped everyday with the verbal abuse,” Rodriguez said, adding that during the filming of he movie, Smith became a real life “Jekyll and Hyde.”

“I’d be walking around and he would hurl some insult. You know, I just kept it in. What am I going to do?” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez played Muhammed Ali’s boxing ring physician Dr. Ferdie Pacheco in the movie.

From Inside Edition:

Rodriguez says the real-life doctor showed up on set, and that’s when things turned nasty. The doctor allegedly ranted that his character didn’t have a big enough role. Rodriguez says the doctor hurled racial slurs at Will Smith.

After that, Rodriguez claims Smith took out his anger on him.

“Will Smith says, ‘You better be careful. You’re far away from anyone who likes you.’ I go, ‘Where does that come from? What do you mean I’m far away?’ He goes, ‘Ain’t no Mexicans here in Africa.’ I said, ‘What?’” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez even kept a diary of the traumatic experience.

“The insults just continue — that look of impunity. And I’m saying to myself, it went from one of the happiest moments of my life to a horrible situation,” Rodriguez said.
