As momentum grows around the country for the suspension of state gas taxes, the state Senate on Thursday rejected a Republican-led push to pause gas tax collections through Labor Day even as Gov. Charlie Baker signaled he was warming to the idea.
The vote in the Senate came the same day Gov. Ned Lamont signed a bill to suspend Connecticut’s 25-cent gas tax through June 30 after the Legislature voted unanimously in favor of the pause.
“Clearly, we have an obligation to respond,” Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr said. “This Senate has not historically witnessed such economic pain and not tried to intervene.”
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, gas prices in Massachusetts shot up to an average high of $4.36 a gallon on March 11, but have been slowly ticking downward averaging $4.25 across the state on Thursday, according to AAA.
Republicans in Massachusetts have been pushing for weeks to suspend the state’s gas tax in the face of those price spikes, but have met resistance from Democrats who have called it a “gimmick” and raised concerns about violating the terms of the state’s bond agreements.
“I know it might sound good and feel good, but you are not providing any real relief,” Senate Ways and Means Chairman Michael Rodrigues told his colleagues.
Rodrigues, a Westport Democrat, said not only would Wall Street and the bond rating agencies look unfavorably on a move to backfill lost gas tax revenue with future surplus funds, but he said there was no guarantee that the savings would get passed on to motorists.
“Do you all trust the oil companies?” Rodrigues asked.
The bill Lamont signed in neighboring Connecticut suspends that state’s tax on gasoline from April 1 to June 30, suspends fares on public buses statewide during that same period, and creates a one-week sales tax holiday on clothing and footwear under $100 from April 10 to April 16.
After the House cast aside a proposal two weeks ago to suspend the gas tax until prices fell to $3.70, the Senate voted 11-29 against an amendment offered by Republican Sen. Ryan Fattman, of Sutton, that attempted to address some of the concerns of Democrats.
Fattman’s amendment would have suspended collection of the gas tax through Sept. 5, and given the Department of Revenue 30 days to notify the state comptroller how much tax revenue was lost during that period. The comptroller would be authorized to transfer an equal sum to the Commonwealth Transportation Fund to replace any lost revenue that had been put up as collateral for state borrowing.
Eight Democrats, mostly from border districts, joined the Senate’s three Republicans in supporting the Fattman amendment. All four Democrats running for statewide office — Sens. Sonia Chang-Diaz, Adam Hinds, Eric Lesser and Diana DiZoglio — voted against suspending the gas tax.
Sens. Paul Feeney, Barry Finegold, Anne Gobi, Mark Montigny, Michael Moore, Marc Pacheco, Walter Timilty and John Velis — all Democrats — joined Tarr, Fattman and Sen. Patrick O’Connor, a Weymouth Republican, in support of the suspension.
“I think the proposal the Senate Republicans have made is a very clever one and it deals with all the issues people have about how we continue to maintain our coverage ratios on our bond covenants,” Baker said earlier in the day at an event in Holyoke.
Baker noted the bipartisan vote in Connecticut, and expressed concern that Massachusetts drivers could get caught in the middle of states where cheaper gas was available. In addition to Connecticut, which is controlled by Democrats, New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, a Republican, has said he supports suspending that state’s gas tax.
“I think it’s going to be really important for us as a commonwealth to take seriously the fact that not only are we going to put our people in a position where they will be significantly disadvantaged if they buy gas in Massachusetts, it also creates a dynamic where we’re not really helping them with this particular cost,” Baker said.
As gas prices began to rise in March, Baker had suggested the gas tax might be one place his administration would look to provide short-term relief to residents struggling with inflation. But as Democratic opposition mounted, Baker chose to focus on his budget plan to cut taxes for renters, senior home owners and low-income families as a way of providing financial relief.
He reiterated his desire to see the Legislature enact his tax reform package to provide relief to those struggling with rising rents, property taxes and everyday goods.
“I think in many ways this is a point in time when we as a commonwealth need to step up and do some things for the people who pay the bills,” Baker said Thursday.
While the failure of Fattman’s amendment was expected, Republicans succeeded in putting Democrats on the record on an issue that candidates for governor and other offices have been hammering for weeks.
While Rodrigues said suspending the gas tax was “nothing more than a gimmick” that at best would save someone $3.64 per tank, Fattman and O’Connor argued that in certain parts of the state people drive longer distances to work and that money can add up.
Fattman also noted that high gas prices could discourage families from Massachusetts and from out-of-state traveling to places like Cape Cod or the Berkshires this summer, hurting businesses trying to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We need to do this. We need to do something. This is the start,” Fattman said.
Sen. Brendan Crighton, a Lynn Democrat and co-chair of the Transportation Committee, echoed concerns about the state’s bond rating and distrust of the big oil companies.
“I do feel the cost of doing this far outweighs the relatively small and unpredictable benefit, because there’s no guarantee this would reach the consumer, it would provide,” Crighton said.
Paul Craney, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, said voters should be reminded of this vote when they go to the polls later this year.
“With today’s vote, it’s important for Massachusetts motorists to understand that 29 of their Democratic state senators had an opportunity to lower gas prices but instead chose to keep them higher. These 29 Democratic state senators need to be held accountable by their constituents. While other blue, red and purple states take action to lower gas prices, these 29 Democratic state senators voted to keep them higher,” Craney said.

Holy Wars have released a new video for their latest single “SUCK IT UP” featuring Dana Dentata. Alternative Press is giving you the first look.
Additionally, the band have announced their debut album, Eat It UP SPIT IT OUT, which drops April 29.
For Holy Wars frontwoman Kat Leon, joining forces with Dentata was the perfect pairing for what the song represents as a whole. “We bonded on what it’s like being an outspoken woman in the music industry where you’re up against a boys’ club and the BS that comes along with it,” Leon says candidly. “The lane gets more narrow, and the politics of a dinosaur age tries to challenge the rebellious. This song is that diss you rehearse in the mirror before the fight. ‘SUCK IT UP’ is a direct punch to the face to the bullies, the fairweather sycophants, the fake and the frenemies.”
According to Leon, the composition of the song came about organically as an improv between her and guitarist Nick Perez. “This was the last song written on the album where the angst of the moment brought out this in-your-face, unapologetic banger,” she says of the song’s structure. “Sonically, the song takes dips and turns, starting off with a spooky, dissonant siren that lets you know something aggressive is coming.”
The video for “SUCK IT UP” was directed by Los Angeles-based videographer Fre Pacheco and features two kids playing the younger doppelgangers of both Leon and Dentata. The video is equal parts adorable, fierce and energetic, with scenes of the two kids taking a joy ride in a supped-up electric toy car set to the pulsating song.

SALEM, Ore. — Oregon voters approved a ballot measure in 2020 to decriminalize hard drugs after being told it was a way to establish and fund addiction recovery centers that would offer people aid instead of incarceration.
Yet in the first year after the new approach took effect in February 2021, only 1% of people who received citations for possessing controlled substances asked for help via a new hotline.
With Oregon being the first state in America to decriminalize possession of personal-use amounts of heroin, methamphetamine, LSD, oxycodone and other drugs, its program is being watched as a potential model for other states.
Some are questioning whether the approach is proving too lenient, but others say the new system has already had a positive impact by redirecting millions of dollars into facilities to help those with drug dependency issues. The funds come from taxes generated by Oregon’s legal marijuana industry and savings from reductions in arrests, jail time and probation supervision.
Under Ballot Measure 110, possession of controlled substances is now a newly created Class E “violation,” instead of a felony or misdemeanor. It carries a maximum $100 fine, which can be waived if the person calls a hotline for a health assessment. The call can lead to addiction counseling and other services.
But out of roughly 2,000 citations issued by police in the year after decriminalization took effect, only 92 of the people who received them called the hotline by mid-February. And only 19 requested resources for services, said William Nunemann of Lines for Life, which runs the hotline.
Almost half of those who got citations failed to show up in court.
State health officials have reported 473 unintentional opioid overdose deaths from January to August 2021, the most recent month for which statistics are available, with the vast majority of those occurring after decriminalization took effect. That narrowly surpasses the total for all of 2020, and is nearly 200 deaths more than the state saw in all of 2019. The state reports that opioid overdose visits to emergency rooms and urgent care centers have also been on the rise.
The Oregon Health Authority cites as possible reasons the greater presence of fentanyl, which has increased overdose deaths across the country, as well as a downturn in reporting during the pandemic in 2020.
Sen. Floyd Prozanski, chair of the Oregon Senate’s Judiciary and Ballot Measure 110 Implementation Committee, said he’s surprised more of those ticketed weren’t taking advantage of the recovery options. Still, he believes it’s too early to judge how the new approach is going.
“It’s a different model, at least for the U.S.,” Prozanski said, adding he’d want to wait at least another half-year before considering whether steps should be introduced to compel people to seek treatment.
Decriminalization advocates argued putting drug users in jail and giving them criminal records, which harms job and housing prospects, was not working.
“Punishing people and these punitive actions, all it does is saddle them with barriers and more stigma and more shame,” said Tera Hurst, executive director of Oregon Health Justice Recovery Alliance, which represents more than 75 community-based organizations and is focused on implementing Measure 110.
The Drug Policy Alliance spearheaded Oregon’s ballot measure. With no U.S. states to serve as examples, the New York-based group, which calls itself the leading organization in the U.S. promoting alternatives to the war on drugs, studied Portugal, which decriminalized drug possession in 2000.
Portugal’s approach is more vigorous than Oregon’s in getting people to treatment.
There, “dissuasion commissions” pressure anyone caught using drugs — even marijuana — to seek treatment. Those pressure points include fines, prohibiting drug users from visiting certain venues or from traveling abroad, seizure of personal property, community work and having to periodically report to health services or other places.
Drug Policy Alliance intentionally sought an approach that did not compel people to seek treatment, said spokesperson Matt Sutton.
“We have seen that when people voluntarily access services when they are ready, they have much more successful outcomes,” Sutton said.
Some 16,000 people accessed services through the ballot measure’s “Access to Care” grants in the first year of decriminalization, according to the Oregon Health Authority.
Most — 60% — accessed “harm reduction services,” like syringe exchanges and overdose medications, the health authority said. Another 15% were assisted with housing needs and 12% obtained peer support. Only 0.85% entered treatment.
Critics say that’s simply not enough.
“The Oregon ballot initiative was presented to the public as pro-treatment but it has been a complete failure in that regard,” said Keith Humphreys, an addiction researcher and professor of psychiatry at Stanford University and former senior adviser in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Brian Pacheco of the Drug Policy Alliance, though, said people with drug problems need a range of options, including harm reduction services, housing assistance, peer support and, for those who can’t get insurance or Medicaid, access to treatment centers.
“Measure 110 funding has strengthened organizations in myriad ways, including getting mobile vehicles to provide services in communities, helped programs keep their doors open, and aided other organizations to purchase and distribute Naloxone (which reverses opioid overdose),” Pacheco said in an email.
The $31 million in grants distributed so far paid for thousands of doses of naloxone, thousands of syringe exchanges, recovery housing, vehicles and the hiring of dozens of staffers for care centers, including recovery mentors, according to the health authority.
An example of where some of the money is going is Great Circle, a nonresidential treatment center in Salem owned by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, which was awarded a $590,055 grant.
On a recent day, two Salem police officers checked on a homeless woman who had been assaulted days earlier. Still bearing a black eye, she confided she had a drug problem and needed help. Police Lt. Treven Upkes called Great Circle to see if they could help. Bring her right over, he was told.
“Just the fact that they had an open door for us at the moment that someone was saying they were ready for help, that’s such an incredible step for us,” Upkes said. “That’s the kind of thing that we would hope comes out of Measure 110.”
If the response had been to schedule an appointment two weeks down the road, Upkes noted he might have been unable to reconnect with the woman.
At Great Circle, a staff doctor and nurses check a person’s vital signs and do a urinalysis with an in-house lab. A nurse dispenses doses of methadone, which can relieve terrible “dope sick” symptoms a person in opioid withdrawal experiences.
Peer specialists like Nick Mull describe their own life experiences to those with substance abuse disorders, and inspire them. Mull’s parents were addicts and he fell into drug use himself at a young age.
“About six years ago, I got in some trouble and … I started to want to change my life,” said Mull, wearing a black hoodie and jeans. “So I just started doing treatment, more treatment and more treatment. I learned a lot.”
Jennifer Worth, Great Circle’s operations director, said Mull plays an important role.
“What Nick brings to the work is a sense of hope,” Worth said. “And the patients who are struggling with where he was can see that hope is possible.”
But with so few people seeking help after receiving citations, the Legislature might need to consider requiring they do more than call a hotline or pay a small fine, Prozanski said.
Humphreys believes people should be pressured to seek treatment if they’re committing crimes like shoplifting and burglary, but not if they’re simply using drugs.
“It’s about the threats to public safety that some people pose because of their problematic drug use,” Humphreys said. “And in those cases, pressuring people to seek treatment is absolutely legitimate.”
Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan’s office will be auditing Oregon’s program. Fagan said she has a personal interest: Her own mother had a lifelong battle with addiction and homelessness.

The X-Men are one of the biggest franchises in pop culture, vastly overshadowing most Marvel properties that aren’t the Avengers or Spider-Man. A massive reason for this is the groundwork laid in the 90s. For the comics industry, there were dizzying highs and terrifying lows, but one property remained steady during the tumultuous time: X-Men.
They were the biggest sales juggernaut in the land and with Marvel suffering bankruptcy in the mid-90s, X-Men kept the ship afloat. While it can be argued that the X-Men have had more fruitful periods before and after the 90s, it was was the decade that defined the franchise.
In the 90s, superheroes weren’t the cultural juggernaut they were today but they did make appearances outside of the comic stores and spinner racks. Cartoons were a place where superheroes thrived and X-Men quickly became one of the biggest of its kind. Every Saturday morning, kids gathered around the TV to see the comic-inspired adventures of their favorite mutants.
X-Men was a much better gateway to comics than modern superhero movies and TV shows because it did a great job of adapting a lot of classic comic stories. It also made sure that a whole generation of children grew up loving the team, something that would pay off when X-Men films began rolling out.
When the 90s began, there were five X-Men books: Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants, Excalibur, and Wolverine. After the explosion of popularity that 1991 represented for the X-Men, that number started to rise. New Mutants morphed into X-Force, Generation X would become the default teen mutant book, and Mutant X would present an alternate universe take on the team.
When characters like Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman had four books, the X-Men topped out at nine ongoing books at the height of their popularity, along with multiple miniseries. The X-Men ran the table, something that wouldn’t happen again until the Krakoa era.
New characters aren’t exactly prevalent in the modern comic industry but things were very different in the 90s. Marvel was always looking for the next big hero or villain and the X-Men books were ground zero for that. It seemed like every other month, a new hero or villain was being introduced in one of the books.
With so many X-Men books, new characters were constantly popping up to populate them, both on the rosters and as antagonists. The X-Men were easily the most fruitful franchise in comics. And while not every character was a winner, the sheer volume of them was impressive.
As 1991 opened, the X-Men had gotten a bit unwieldy. Longtime writer Chris Claremont was a master of juggling characters but he was leaving. Besides that, Marvel knew that two X-Men books would sell better than one, so they split up the massive group into the Blue and Gold teams. These two incarnations of the X-Men became two of the most iconic rosters in the team’s history.
The Blue team was stacked with the most popular character like Wolverine, Psylocke, Gambit, and Rogue but the Gold Team was no slouch, with popular mainstays like Storm, Jean Grey, Bishop, Iceman, and Colossus. The split team era paid off, allowing creators to cover the gamut of X-Men stories in more digestible packages.
90s comics often get a bad reputation and that can be hard to argue with. The decade saw Marvel embrace a style over substance approach that mimicked the works of the prodigal Image Seven; writing wasn’t exactly important. However, there are still some great Marvel comics from that time, and a good portion of them are X-Men.
90s X-Men stories have a lot of forgotten classics in there, stories that still hold up to this day. X-Men books always had some of Marvel’s best artists and writers on board in the 90s, giving the stories a quality that other Marvel books didn’t have at the time.
Wolverine is one of Marvel’s greatest heroes but it was a long road from his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181 to this point. His stature kept increasing throughout the 80s, but the 90s was when he truly hit his stride. His solo book was an established bestseller, often outselling Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman books as well as every other solo Marvel hero, and he was usually the focus of the X-Men books.
The 90s was when Wolverine truly became one of Marvel’s biggest solo stars, a distinction he still holds today. He was everywhere during the decade but his home was with the X-Men, their popularity feeding off each other in a symbiotic circle.
Marvel’s event style was still in its infancy in the 90s. It kicked off in epic fashion with the one-two punch of Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War but the third part of that trilogy, Infinity Crusade, underwhelmed. Marvel was also putting out crossovers in related families of books but the biggest ones were always the X-Men events.
X-Men events drove sales and received fan acclaim like no one else in the 90s. Even big events like the Onslaught storyline, which would have massive repercussions throughout the line, started out as X-Men centric, as the name brand had the most eyes on the story.
Marvel has been home to a lot of amazing artists, with the publisher’s 90s artists going on to become some of the biggest ever. The vast majority of them all had one thing in common: they worked on the X-Men books. Talents like Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Whilce Potracio, and Marc Silvestri were all on X-Men books when they left for Image, breaking records before leaving. And Marvel found some worthy replacements for them.
Artists like Andy Kubert, Adam Kubert, Leinil Yu, Chris Bachalo, Carlos Pacheco, and Joe Madureira all came to prominence because of their X-Men runs. All of them would go on to huge things in the industry in the future, their X-Men runs nabbing them legions of fans.
The Age of Apocalypse is one of the most beloved X-Men stories of all time. This epic put all of the ongoing X-Men book storylines on pause to bring readers to a dystopian alternate universe ruled by Apocalypse, where the X-Men were the world’s only hope. It could have been a massive failure but fans loved it, cementing its place in comics history.
Few alternate universe stories before or since have the length and breadth of The Age of Apocalypse. It was a watershed moment for the X-Men and Marvel, one which they’ve tried to replicate many times over the years with little success, proving just how great the story is.
1991’s X-Men #1 has a lot of distinctions. It was longtime X-Men writer Chris Claremont’s last X-Men story until the year 2000. Artist Jim Lee introduced new costumes for the time and the Blue and Gold team split began here. It kicked off one of the best Magneto stories ever, introducing the Acolytes, a team that would become his main servants throughout the 90s.
However, all of that pales compared to the book’s sales. X-Men #1 sold eight million copies, becoming the best-selling comic of all time and one of the most important Marvel comics of the 90s. This cemented the 90s as the franchise’s biggest decade, setting them on the course to be the stars of the decade.

This is not a good look for Will Smith…
By now, everyone knows the 53-year-old has faced a ton of backlash ever since he stormed onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock across for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. While Will anxiously waits to see what consequences the Academy decides to rain down on him, many celebrities have offered up their thoughts and opinions on the whole situation. But one former co-star is who knows Will’s “rage” first hand is now speaking out.
Paul Rodriguez told The Sun he was not shocked that Will attacked Chris since the actor had made his life a “living hell” when he “bullied and humiliated” him on the set of the 2001 biopic Ali. The actor recalled:
“Chris Rock only took one slap at the Oscars … but I took a verbal slap from Will Smith every day. And sometimes I think the emotional injuries are just as deep, if not deeper, than physical ones.”
The 57-year-old comedian, who has been in movies here and there since the ’80s (you may have seen him in A Million To Juan or Tortilla Soup) was hoping to springboard into a real dramatic stage of his career, but Will’s abuses stopped that:
“That movie was meant to be a huge stepping stone in my career, but for me it ended up being a nightmare because of all the sickening abuse I got from Smith. He was evil to me but nice to everyone else. It was sort of like Jekyll and Hyde.”
Paul recalled how excited he was to work with Will again after he was cast in the movie as Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, the personal physician and cornerman for the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.
The pair had previously worked together on the 1993 romantic comedy Made in America and had built up a pretty great relationship afterward:
“Back then he wasn’t the superstar he is now. We hung quite a lot and everything had always been really friendly between us. From time to time, I’d run into him in the studio when we were working on different projects and everything was terrific. So when I went to audition for Ali, after the fifth or sixth time I read for [the director] Michael Mann, I ran into him again. We stopped and chatted for a little while and I asked him to put in a good word for me. He told me, ‘I think he likes you, I think the part is yours already.’”
While filming started great, things soon took a turn…
According to Paul, their relationship came crashing down for an unknown reason. However, he has said before (he first spoke about Will’s mistreatment back in 2016) believes it started to sour after an alleged incident between Will and the real Ferdie Pacheco. He explained in detail:
“I was off that day so I didn’t see the commotion. But the real Ferdie Pacheco was on the set and apparently he was inebriated and went into Will’s dressing room and was complaining that his character should have a bigger part, and should be played by Danny Garcia instead of me. Things escalated and apparently Pacheco started calling Will the N-word. Police were called and he was escorted off the set – it was bad.”
But somehow the dispute got transferred over to him? He lamented:
“Will never looked at me the same from that point onward.”
When Paul returned to the set the following day, he had no idea what went down between the two men and went right into shooting a scene where he had to lace up Will’s gloves. The stand-up asked the future Oscar winner if the laces were done right at one point but were completely ignored. Out of nowhere, he then looked at Paul, moved his arms away, and yelled “you don’t know what the f**k you’re doing”:
“I’m like, ‘Will, I’m just lacing up gloves, the camera isn’t even on me right now.’ I think my lines were something like, ‘stick and move Champ, stick and move.’ And he just looked at me again and said, ‘you don’t know what you’re doing,’ and everything just went drastically downhill from there.”
From that point, Paul claimed Will continuously bullied him on set, doing things such as not engaging in conversation despite often sitting next to him in makeup and getting his fellow cast and crew members to turn against him:
“[I didn’t even get] the most basic cordiality, you know, not even ‘Good morning. How are you? How’s it going?’ when we all sat on a makeup chair. I mean, I was there for six hours every day, but there was never any bantering … we used to talk but now it was as if somebody smelled bad and I was tainted. And it tainted the other actors. All of a sudden nobody wanted to hang out with me. Michael Mann even started hollering me out in front of all the other actors in group scenes for things I wasn’t even doing.”
When the entire cast was invited to dinner at Nelson Mandela’s home, no one even informed Paul of the outing. It wasn’t until Mykelti Williamson, who played Don King in the movie, eventually spilled the details about the invite that he found out. When he arrived at the house, Will allegedly appeared very bothered that he showed up. What’s worse is Paul claims he even issued a “threat” against him:
“I remember I was getting some food from the buffet in that beautiful house when he came up to me and said, ‘You need to be very careful. You’re a long way from anyone who likes you. Because you’re in Africa, there are no Mexicans here.’”
Whoa… What the eff?!
Paul then asked him to explain what he meant by his racially charged comments but Will never did. By then, he had reached a breaking point and even threatened to quit the movie. However, co-star Jon Voight talked him out of it, arguing that Will was just being a method actor — and that their situation would improve once his character was done being angry. But it didn’t. In one last-ditch effort to distinguish himself from his character, Paul said he removed his prosthetics and told Will one day:
“‘Look, if you’re unsatisfied with me, I’m not gonna sit here and take this abuse. It’s me, Paul Rodriguez, man. I’m not Pacheco, I’d never use the word he used, that’s not who I am. I’m playing this guy.’ I asked him why he was choosing to hurt me but I couldn’t get through. He just told me to ‘shut up and stand there’ [in silence].”
When the film premiered on Christmas Day in 2001, Paul found his character was significantly cut from the movie and thinks Will was the reason for it:
“I did everything within my power to try to shine in that movie, including taking voice lessons to sound like Pacheco, and for all that I got ostracized and humiliated. This seriously injured my career, because Hollywood would’ve looked at how I was cut out and thought, ‘Wow this Rodriguez was so bad they cut him from the move’, but that wasn’t the case. It was a disaster and I have to overcome that. … All I was left with was just a sickening feeling like I was some kind of sacrificial lamb. What was meant to be a dream role was made into a nightmare.”
Wow.
In the interview with The Sun, Paul shared that he decided to come forward with his full story as he has no more “fear” over the consequences of telling his truth after Will started facing backlash for the slap:
“When he hit Chris and I saw that smug look on his face, where he looked like a thug, I lost my fear [about sharing my story]. I’ve got nothing to lose – I’m just angry. He looked like he was saying, ‘I dare anybody to touch me.’ But he’d just committed a crime; you get arrested for that if you’re an ordinary human being, but apparently, he’s above the law.”
Furthermore, Paul cannot believe that the “laws of civility and conduct” were seemingly ignored simply “because he can act”:
“Are we going to excuse Harvey Weinstein because he’s a great producer in spite of all the women he’s hurt? No, it doesn’t cancel it out – so it shouldn’t for Smith either. This industry has been so generous to Smith. He’s hit the highest possible heights and this is how he acts? It’s outrageous, but not surprising.”
He continued:
“It’s a very sad situation, I guess I feel sorry for [Smith] in a way. I’m not wishing him anything other than for him to look at himself in the mirror for him to get the proper treatment that he needs to get. I also hope he properly apologizes to Rock, because a post on social media is not an apology – he needs to come to his door.”
And although it has been more than 20 years since the filming of Ali wrapped, Paul hopes to get an apology from Will for how he was treated on set. As for working with the Aladdin star again? Well, Paul would ultimately have to pass up on the opportunity:
“I feel he did me so much damage. But deep down in my heart, I’ve always said that people dig their own graves and this was always going to come out eventually. I bet as the months go on, we’ll find out I wasn’t the only one he was evil to.”
