Pedro Lopez named Albuquerque Isotopes manager; Jordan Pacheco back on to staff – Albuquerque Journal

Pedro Lopez has been here before.

The newly named Albuquerque Isotopes manager – formally named such on Friday by the parent organization Colorado Rockies – has both experience as a minor league manager and has spent the past two seasons on the staff of the Triple-A Isotopes.

Aside from the primary role of helping develop players into big-league-ready products, Lopez said he’s fortunate to get this opportunity as the eighth manager in Isotopes history in a town that has some of the best fan support in all of minor league baseball.

“I think we got to set a winning culture. I mean, we’ve got to win,” Lopez said Friday on a video call with the media from his native Dominican Republic. “… Being in Albuquerque for the last two years, seeing so many fans coming to the games, the fan support, the fan base and not being able to win as many games for whatever reason … hopefully, we can set a winning culture. Hopefully we can give the city of Albuquerque what they deserve, which is a championship.”

Lopez was the Isotopes’ hitting coach in 2021 and bench coach last season under manager Warren Schaeffer, who is now with the Rockies as their third base coach.

Joining Lopez with the Isotopes this season on staff will be La Cueva High graduate and former UNM Lobo star Jordan Pacheco, who will be in his second season with the team as well as newcomers in bench coach Bobby Meacham and pitching coach Chris Michalak.

Lopez played 13 minor league seasons as an infielder and has been in minor league coaching the past 19 seasons, including as a Triple-A manager in the past in the New York Mets organization at a time they had one of the highest rated farm systems in baseball. He knows how loaded the Rockies system is with highly-regarded prospects that are likely to spend some time in Albuquerque in the coming seasons.

MLB Pipeline last season ranked the Rockies prospects No. 9 overall in all of Major League Baseball, and Lopez said it’s a similar feel to when he was helping young Mets prospects like Wilmer Flores, Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz along through that organization.

“The list goes on of guys I had the privilege to (manage),” Lopez said. “And I think we’re starting to see that with the Rockies – upcoming players that, in the near future, they’re going to be helping out the big league club.”

The Isotopes’ season begins March 31 at Round Rock with a home opener April 4 against Salt Lake.

ON JORDAN: As for Pacheco, the you can put Lopez firmly in the camp of those who left the 2022 season thoroughly impressed with the coaching future of the former La Cueva Bear and UNM Lobo.

“He did a great job with those theaters. I think that all the work that he put in – people might not see it. They probably aren’t aware of how much work goes into being a hitting coach at that level. … I’ll tell you what, I tip my hat to Jordan because being his first year and being able to set the tone and help those guys reach their maximum potential, it was outstanding.”

Lopez noted that Pacheco, after just one season with the Topes, was in consideration for a big league gig already.

In Pacheco’s first season with the Isotopes, the team led all of Minor League Baseball in home runs (240) and was second in OPS (.836) while hitting 14 grand slams, the most by any MiLB team ever and tied for the most in professional baseball history with the 2000 Oakland Athletics and 2006 Cleveland Indians.

Pacheco is a 2004 graduate of La Cueva and went on to star for the Lobos until being a 9th round draft pick of the Rockies in 2007, when he started his 14-season professional playing career.

OTHER STAFF: The Rockies also named Meacham the team’s new bench coach and Michalak the pitching coach.

Meacham is back in the Rockies organization for a third time and his long coaching career has including 10 seasons on big league staffs. He was manager of the 1995 Calgary Cannons, whose public relations director at that time was current Isotopes General Manager John Traub.

Michalak pitched with the Albuquerque Dukes in 2000, when he led the team in wins with an 11-3 record.

He also played with the Isotopes in 2004 and 2008. He appeared in 61 MLB games.

Trainer Hoshi Mizutani is back in the same position with the team this season and his sixth season in the Rockies organization.

Arsenal high, wide and handsome to break down Aston Villa Women

When Arsenal announced their starting line-up at Villa Park on Sunday, the inclusion of Caitlin Foord and Katie McCabe would not have posed a surprise. They have both played every minute of the last six matches now. We have become accustomed recently to McCabe starting on the right with Foord on the left.

However, Eidevall opted to start with Foord on the right and McCabe on the left. It’s the first time that he has ever played Foord on the right hand side. Arseblog News asked Jonas Eidevall about this post-match and here was his answer.

“We knew width was going to be an important component, especially in the final third. That means that the way we positioned, sometimes we keep our full-backs a little higher, in this game we felt there was a lot of opportunity to keep the wide forwards higher. Because of the situations we anticipated going into we thought that was going to be favourable to expose them.”

Foord and McCabe did swap repeatedly during the game but let’s have a look at what Jonas meant by keeping his wide forwards high to expose Aston Villa, who play Sarah Mayling and Maz Pacheco in the full-back positions. We can see from Villa’s pass network (courtesy of StatsBomb) that both of their full-backs commit to high positions, they don’t really have a bias down one side.

Arsenal did have a bias in which of their full-backs pushed on, though both were quite high. This time they had a slight right-sided bias, with Maritz slightly higher than Catley. Usually, not always, Arsenal have a left-sided bias with their full-backs. These things are rarely a coincidence, there mist have been something about Villa’s left hand side of Hanson and Pacheco that Arsenal thought they could exploit.

Note that McCabe and Foord appear centrally on the map because they swapped flanks so frequently.

In the build-up to this chance for Foord, we see Rafaelle looking to spread play to Foord who is high and wide on the right.

The pass from Rafaelle is cut out but Arsenal counterpress and win it back. McCabe tries to slide the ball in behind for Blackstenius and we can see that Pacheco has been attracted inside to mark the run of Miedema, leaving Foord on her own.

Miedema executes a brilliant chapeau before teeing up Foord, who finds herself in space for a shot that goes just over. Foord has stayed high and wide during the move and we can see that Pacheco has followed the ball inside and left winger Kirsty Hanson isn’t in the shot tracking back.

From this angle we can see how much space Foord has. Pacheco is the kind of defender who likes to engage with the ball and Hanson and Lehmann stay wide. Look back at the highlights from Villa’s 5-0 defeat to Manchester United from their last WSL game. Three of the five goals come from Manchester United’s right-side.

In the build-up to Arsenal’s equaliser, we again see Maanum spread the play to Foord on the right, who is, again, positioned high and wide. On this occasion, Foord controls the ball and tries to feed the ball to the overlapping run of Maritz. The pass is blocked and Arsenal win a throw.

From the throw, we see Arsenal have used the break in play to swap the wingers over, with McCabe now on the right and Foord has moved to the left. The swap yields instant rewards.

Arsenal work the ball in-field and Foord sees the run of McCabe in behind. Pacheco is occupied by Blackstenius and Hanson doesn’t realise McCabe is running off her.

It gives McCabe the space she needs to drive to the by-line. Arsenal get a bit of luck as Hampton palms the ball onto Rachel Corsie and the ball drifts over the line. But this was very much an area that Arsenal were banking on creating opportunities from.

Because the situation comes from a throw-in, Hanson is back and in a good defensive position to cover for Pacheco but you can see here that she has just switched off for a second, looking at the ball and not aware of who is behind her.

It wasn’t just the wingers that looked to attack these areas. Maanum does brilliantly to snatch the ball from McLaughlin and we can see that Hanson and Pacheco are well up the pitch.

Maanum drives down the right touchline and Danielle Turner has to take her out and accept a booking because Villa are exposed on that flank.

As McCabe receives the ball well inside her half, Pacheco is touch tight and well advanced. This leads to a simple foul; but you can see how aggressive Pacheco is in pursuit of the ball and that’s part of the reason why Arsenal felt they could work space in behind her.

Arsenal weren’t just aiming for the right-side though. Here we see a big switch from Wubben-Moy to Foord on the left.

As Foord receives the pass, we see that Catley has gotten away from Lehmann with an ease that will frustrate Villa boss Carla Ward. Foord finds Catley’s run and her cut back ends in a shot for McCabe that goes just wide.

With the last action of the half, Arsenal pass through the lines from Wälti to Miedema and as she charges forwards, she has good options either side. Lehmann is not close to Foord on the left which leaves Mayling with a lot of space to cover. Likewise, though Pacheco is close to McCabe, Hanson is not in the shot chasing back.

Miedema finds McCabe and you can see the quandary Pacheco is in, having to both try to screen the pass to McCabe and mark McCabe herself. Hanson is only just running back into the frame now.

McCabe is able to pick out a cross from here which Villa clear. But you can see that Arsenal are benefitting from the fact that Villa leave their wide players very high, which gives Eidevall’s team the chance to expose the full-backs.

For the third goal, we see much the same pattern. Catley runs in behind Lehmann who is back but not defensively switched on.

Wälti duly finds Catley and Lehmann has not moved or reacted at all. Catley tries to find Blackstenius but the ball ricochets to McCabe who makes no mistake from close range. Again, Kirsty Hanson, while you would not expect her to be in the penalty area alongside Pacheco necessarily, is not in the frame. Maritz is also free if needed.

Right place, right time for @Katie_McCabe11!

The PASSION though 🙌#BarclaysWSL @ArsenalWFC pic.twitter.com/dYnPcBViRy

— Barclays Women’s Super League (@BarclaysWSL) December 11, 2022

And a similar story unfolds for Arsenal’s fourth. Williamson finds Foord on the right.

Once again, Hanson isn’t really tracking back because the Villa wide players are instructed to stay high and wait for counter-attacks. Mayling has moved across to left-back and she comes to meet Foord and that leaves a gulley of space in behind her. On this occasion, Mayling does make the block and Arsenal only get a throw. But from the throw-in…

It’s just too easy for Arsenal to expose that space behind the full-backs again from a simple throw and Foord runs into the space.

Turner comes across to meet Foord but a) she is already on a booking because of the earlier foul where Villa were exposed in this area and b) she also risks giving a penalty away.

Foord cuts the ball back to Nobbs and there is just no chance that Jordan misses from there.

The perfect person to score @ArsenalWFC‘s 500th #BarclaysWSL goal 🙌@JordanNobbs8 👏 pic.twitter.com/4IwUH0tHIR

— Barclays Women’s Super League (@BarclaysWSL) December 12, 2022

Villa have enjoyed success this season by having Lehmann and Hanson advanced either side of Rachel Daly, it’s a big part of the reason that Daly has scored as many goals as she has. Of course, Villa open the scoring precisely because Hanson is in such a high, brave position.

That is a special strike @KirstyHanson3! 💥

Just WOW! 😱#BarclaysWSL @AVWFCOfficial pic.twitter.com/GWxGiJNsGB

— Barclays Women’s Super League (@BarclaysWSL) December 11, 2022

But Arsenal, like Manchester United before them, identified that space in behind the full-backs as a potential weakness and exploited it clinically.

In post-Roe Colorado, could a city ordinance keep out a late-term abortionist? – Catholic World Report

Denver, Colo., Dec 9, 2022 / 11:05 am (CNA).

A proposed ordinance in the southern Colorado city of Pueblo would require abortion clinics to follow federal law and allow citizens to file a civil complaint against any clinics that violate the law. The proposal comes after news that late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart seeks to open an abortion clinic in the city.

The proposal asks U.S. attorneys for the District of Colorado “to investigate and prosecute all abortion providers and abortion-pill distribution networks.”

“We call upon victims of abortion providers and abortion-pill networks to sue these criminal racketeering enterprises,” the text says.

The ordinance text cites federal provisions of the 1873 Comstock law, which bar sending abortion-related items in the mail. The proposed ordinance says federal law imposes criminal liability on those who ship or receive abortion pills or abortion-related paraphernalia in interstate and foreign commerce. Violations may be prosecuted under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

The ordinance would require abortion clinics to obtain a city license and comply with this understanding of federal law. If the proposal becomes law, it requires enforcement of the law to take place “exclusively” through a right of private action. This enforcement mechanism resembles a Texas law that allowed lawsuits against abortion clinics that violate state law.

The ordinance passed its first reading Nov. 28 by a vote of 4-3, according to the Pueblo Chieftain.

Brittany Vessely, executive director of the Colorado Catholic Conference, told CNA Dec. 7 that the proposal is “a tremendous effort for life, protected in federal statute and within the rights of Puebloans to enforce themselves.”

Pueblo Mayor Nick Gradisar said he has not yet decided whether he would veto the ordinance if it passes. Five votes would be required to override a veto. The final vote, which could still be postponed, is currently scheduled for Dec. 12.

Pueblo, located more than 100 miles south of Denver, is the ninth-most populous city in Colorado with more than 111,000 people. The closest abortion clinic is in Colorado Springs, about 50 miles north of Pueblo.

Clinics for Abortion and Reproductive Excellence (CARE) has purchased a location in the city’s Bessemer neighborhood. It also has clinics in Nebraska and Maryland.

CARE’s medical director is LeRoy Carhart, a prolific late-term abortionist who waged a legal fight in Nebraska in the late 1990s and early 2000s to strike down the state’s ban on partial-birth abortions. He also unsuccessfully sued to block a 2003 federal ban on partial-birth abortions, which remains in place today. Carhart is one of the few abortion doctors in the country who openly performs abortions in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Pueblo City Councilwoman Regina Maestri, a sponsor of the ordinance, said it was a response to news that Carhart planned to open an abortion clinic.

“Pueblo has not really ever had an abortion clinic of this nature,” she told CNA Dec. 7. “My community doesn’t feel like we need to be hosting Dr. Carhart because he’s been unwelcome in other areas, in other cities.”

CNA sought comment from CARE but did not receive a response by publication.

The proposed Pueblo ordinance comes after a strong pro-abortion advocacy campaign in Colorado anticipating the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, ending Roe v. Wade and returning abortion law to the states.

Earlier this year, the Colorado Legislature passed the strongly pro-abortion Reproductive Health Equity Act, which explicitly denies any legal rights to unborn children.

Vessely characterized the law as “abhorrent.” She told CNA it “removes all limits in favor of gruesome abortion on demand for the full 40 weeks.”

Maestri told CNA she was concerned about Colorado’s lack of abortion regulation, including its permission for non-doctors to perform an abortion under a licensed doctor. Another concern is that Carhart’s clinic is far from the nearest hospital emergency room that could accept a patient in case of complications.

“What’s important about this proposed ordinance is that it stops abortion clinics from coming in and setting up in Pueblo,” she said. The ordinance is “the only thing that we can put in place in order to stop the abortion clinics from coming to town until we feel that they’re properly regulated. It’s about women’s safety at this point.”

“The state of Colorado has been very negligent in legalizing abortion,” she said.

However, the proposed ordinance has its critics. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, a Democrat who campaigned on a pro-abortion-rights position, is “committed to defending the Reproductive Health Equity Act and challenging any local ordinance that violates the law,” according to his director of communications, Lawrence Pacheco.

Sara Neel, a senior staff attorney for the Colorado ACLU, which backs abortion, said the Comstock laws the proposal cites are interpreted to apply only to unlawful items.

“Since abortion is lawful, and drugs have been approved by the FDA and even approved for mailing in the United States … I think their reliance on the Comstock laws is misplaced at the current time,” she said, according to the Pueblo Chieftain.

The city’s legal department has recommended the city council not adopt the ordinance.

In Vessely’s view, the proposed ordinance is in line with Coloradan and American legal traditions.

“Pueblo is saying, ‘not in our city!’ which is a commendable act of federalism, intended by the founders of our country and state,” she said. “Late-term abortionists like Leroy Carhart, who acknowledge the humanity of the babies they murder in the womb and have caused the deaths of many women, have no place in Pueblo or in Colorado.”
