Motivator in Chief: Getting the Most from Your Team – Knowledge at Wharton

The Goal

Increase motivation by incentivizing, developing, and structuring work better for those you manage.

Nano Tool

One of managers’ primary responsibilities is motivating their teams to do their best work — and feel a sense of fulfillment in the process. A motivated team is a highly engaged one; its members are better at handling uncertainty, solving problems, and applying high levels of creativity and innovation to their work. They’re also much more likely to stick around.

Motivation can be driven by intrinsic reasons (e.g., a desire to learn or be challenged) or by extrinsic ones (e.g., a desire to gain status or earn a financial bonus). Not every team member is going to be motivated in the same way, and the role of a manager is to discover team members’ motivation preferences and then meet those preferences.

That role becomes significantly less complicated by using psychologist David McClelland’s Human Motivation Theory, which identifies three needs (achievement, power, and affiliation) that correlate with how an individual is motivated, particularly at work. While everyone is driven by a combination of these needs, most of us have a dominant motivator. Determining the dominant one for each team member and structuring work, providing praise, and rewarding performance based on it is the key to motivating them.

“The role of a manager is to discover team members’ motivation preferences and then meet those preferences.”

Action Steps

Managing for motivation requires understanding the three needs, identifying the primary need of each team member, and then managing them to best meet that need.

1. Achievement: If this is a team member’s primary need, they will be motivated by goal setting and accomplishing goals. They like to see progress and like to receive regular feedback along the way. They are drawn to work where success is clearly accomplished through effort and merit. The best ways to manage these team members are:

2. Power: Team members with this primary need will be motivated by competition and the ability to influence others. They like to have the ability to exert control over situations and are driven by the desire to have responsibility and sway. The best ways to manage these team members are:

3. Affiliation: Those with this primary need are motivated by belonging to a group and feeling a strong sense of community in their workplace. They love collaborating with others and cultivating a sense of attachment to those around them. They will stick with an organization because of loyalty to the team. The best ways to manage these team members are:

What Germany’s ‘shilly-shallying’ means for Ukraine, Russia & NATO | DW News

Western military leaders meeting in Germany have failed to reach agreement on sending German-made battle tanks to Ukraine. Kyiv was optimistic that Berlin would give approval for its powerful Leopard 2 tanks to be delivered to the battlefield. But Germany’s defense minister, Boris Pistorius, said his country was still weighing the decision. That sparked protests in Berlin and pleas from other countries to provide the weaponry.

JWC Round Up: South Korea Records Late Victory, Party at Zimbabwe

The Netherlands clapped 9-0 over poor America and is, therefore, the leader in group A. But of course, there was much more on the menu in Potchefstroom. We’ll update you on day 1 of the World Cup-21.

South Korea JWC - JWC Round Up: South Korea Records Late Victory, Party at Zimbabwe - '13 0-1 MacKenzie (sc)'45 0-2 Giglio (sb)'56 0-3 MacKenzie (sc)Host nation South Africa was unable to stunt against England in the opening match. The local favourites, with a number of players from the university team of Potchefstroom in the ranks, held out for more than ten minutes. After Lorna MacKenzie opened the score from a corner, South Africa lagged behind. England ran out to a carefree 3-0 after the break, thanks to a good penalty from captain Millie Giglio and another corner from MacKenzie. The match also had a Dutch touch: Lisette Beljon was one of the two referees.

Host nation South Africa was unable to stunt against England in the opening match.

Canada – Zimbabwe 1-2

‘5 0-1 Terblanche
’24 0-2 Pope
’58 1-2 Goodman
The first surprising result of this tournament took place in the group of the Dutch Juniors. Canada, which was known as the best opponent of the Netherlands in the first phase of the World Cup, lost 1-2 against Zimbabwe. The Africans screamed their lungs out after both goals. In a match with four green and four yellow cards, Canada got plenty of corners to change the score. The answer came, but too late. As a result, Zimbabwe is taking a nice step towards second place in this group. Canada, still scoreless, will be the next opponent of the Orange on Saturday.

South Korea – Uruguay 1-0

’56 1-0 Sung-Hee Jung
Uruguay – a beautiful national anthem by the way – is a team to keep an eye on in this tournament. At the Pan-Am Cup under 21, this team drew in the group stage against none other than Argentina, which is a title contender in every tournament. So expectations were high against South Korea, which won the World Cup 21 in 2001 and 2005. Long, very long, it went straight. Until Sung-Hee Jung knocked the Uruguayan defence from close range four minutes before the end. The result: a big smile and three points for South Korea and angry looks and empty hands for Uruguay.

Argentina – Austria 8-0

‘5 1-0 Pacheco (sc)
‘7 2-0 Rouger
’30 3-0 V. Raposo (sb)
’44 4-0 Pagella
’48 5-0 Bruggesser
’50 6-0 Pacheco
’55 7-0 V. Raposo (sb)
’57 8-0 Pacheco
Argentina showed themselves in the evening game. The start was fine against Austria, which is the replacement for the boycotted Russia. It was 2-0 in seven minutes. In the last fifteen minutes things went really fast and the score rose from 4-0 to 8-0. There was a leading role for Daiana Pacheco, who was good for three goals. The nineteen-year-old talent has already played two international matches for ‘the great Argentina’. Valentina Raposo also stood out with two striking penalty shots. The defender played – and did well – at the last Olympics where she finished second with Argentina.

Reckoning War Teasers for Marvel Comics This Week? (Spoilers)

Reckoning War Teasers for Marvel Comics This Week? (Spoilers)

And the return of Jack of Hearts. But could there be a connection?

The Reckoning War has been solicited as part of The Fantastic Four going forward, with one-shot spinoffs. But what about Jack of Hearts?

The character first appeared in The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #22 in 1976, and was created by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen. He starred in his own four-issue mini-series and has been a regular character in Iron Man and Avengers.

Jack Hart is the son of scientist Philip Hart and a Contraxian alien. As a young man Jack was doused in Zero Fluid and gained super powers but was not in total control of his powers. In an attempt to control his powers, Jack of Hearts built a containment suit that resembled the Jack of Hearts playing card. The lack of control became a recurring theme with Jack of Hearts, including his stint in the Avengers where he had to spend 14 hours a day in a containment room to prevent self-destruction. When his powers became uncontrollable he chose to leave Earth, exploding in space without harming any innocent bystanders. The return of Jack of Hearts and the explosion that killed Scott Lang was the launching point of the 2004-05 Avengers Disassembled story by Brian Bendis and David Finch, revived by Wanda as a zombie, he then blew himself up, killing Scott Lang and destroying half of the Avengers Mansion. Those opening events saw a She-Hulk whose powers were overcooked by Wanda, rip the Vision apart.

Well, that link may be triggered early in this week’s She-Hulk #1 by Rainbow Rowell and Roge Antonia. Which tells us “the last page of this first issue is going to send Jen down a road she’s never traveled and that will shake up her life and possibly the whole Marvel Universe.” And Bleeding Cool has managed to find an early peek,

The return of Jack Of Hearts was seen in the solicitations for She-Hulk #3, but it looks like he will be turning up a little early.

• Jack of Hearts is back, and it’s up to She-Hulk to help him figure out why.

But what has been chasing her since 1989? That would be the John Byrne series that revitalised the character as a fourth-wall-breaking lawyer. What else from She-Hulk’s past come into play? As Bleeding Cool may have mentioned before, twenty-or-so-years ago, Dan Slott used to drop something into a number of his comic books at Marvel about something he would call The Reckoning War. A storyline that would upend the future of the Marvel Universe, centred on She-Hulk but involving The Watcher, the Fantastic Four, Gauntlet, Iron Man, Southpaw and many more.

In She-Hulk #3 back in 2005, we discovered, from the Time Variance Authority, that actions already taken by She-Hulk would lead to The Reckoning War. That this was a bad thing. That this was all She-Hulk’s fault, and emanated from something she had done in the first year that Dan Slott wrote her.

The Reckoning War would devastate not only the Earth but the whole cosmos. Marvel sources told me that Slott had tried to get this event to finally occur in one book or other for some time, but hadn’t heard about it from him for a few years.

At some point, maybe when he was writing Amazing Spider-Man, he put The Reckoning War on the back-burner, with just a couple of references in the last ten years.

With a repeated phrase, “there shall be a reckoning” or “there will be a reckoning”. Which is now on its way in the Fantastic Four, which also mentions She-Hulk and Jack Of Hearts as playing a role. But if their lives are so entwined in the Reckoning War, should we keep an eye out in She-Hulk as well? Starting this Wednesday? As some kind of early tease?

Jeremy Renner and Daughter Ava’s Sweetest Moments Through the Years: Photos

His top priority. Jeremy Renner calls daughter Ava, born in March 2013, his “No. 1,” and he loves to share sweet photos of his little girl.

“Thank you Ava for the BEST day of my life and EVERYDAY since then,” the Hurt Locker star wrote via Instagram on Father’s Day in June 2022 alongside a photo of him holding Ava as a newborn. “Love has never been so exquisitely defined. You will always be the best part of me. And to my Father, you are and inspiration and my real life super hero ❤❤.”

Renner, known for playing Avengers member Hawkeye/Clint Barton in the Marvel Studios franchise since 2011, shares Ava with ex-wife Sonni Pacheco.

Since the pair split in 2014, Renner tries to cherish the limited time he has with his daughter. He told Men’s Health in November 2021 that he flew from London to Los Angeles nearly every weekend for 18 months to see Ava, but he eventually decided to tell studios to work with his schedule.

“It taught me how to have the nuts to say, ‘Everyone, f–k off. It’s my time with my daughter,’” the Mayor of Kingstown star said at the time, adding that he’d been warned that the studios could fire him. “I said, ‘Fine, recast me. I’m going to be here with my daughter.’ It was pretty gnarly.”

Renner said he must be able to visit his little girl or have her visit every weekend on every project, adding that he won’t take the job if that’s impossible.

“Acting and everything else goes out the window until my daughter says, ‘I want to hang out with my friends, and I don’t want to be around you so much, Daddy,’” the California native said.

Though Renner and Pacheco finalized their divorce in 2015, they’ve since been engaged in a contentious custody battle. The model alleged in 2019 court documents that Renner had previously threatened to kill her and himself, going on to claim a history of verbal, emotional and substance abuse.

Renner’s rep exclusively told Us Weekly at the time that Ava’s well-being was the Hawkeye star’s “primary focus,” adding, “This is a matter for the court to decide. It’s important to note the dramatizations made in Sonni’s declaration are a one-sided account made with a specific goal in mind.”

While the Canada native slammed Renner the following year as he requested to lower child support payments amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Oscar nominee subsequently accused his ex of removing more than $50,000 from Ava’s fund “for her own personal benefit.”

Pacheco denied the allegations and Renner denied her abuse claims. “I don’t respond publicly or privately to nonsense,” the American Hustle star told Men’s Health at the time. “It only empowers it. … If you respond to it, you give it gas. I don’t fuel s–t fires. I just don’t do it. I refuse to.”

Scroll down for Renner’s sweetest moments with Ava:
