NATO defense ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss further military assistance to Ukraine. Ministers from the 30 member states are joined by representatives from non-NATO countries also aiding Ukraine. Speaking ahead of the summit, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned that an anticipated Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine has already begun. He says Ukraine’s backers are in a logistical race to supply it with weapons and ammunition.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin earlier gave the opening remarks at the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, whose dozens of members coordinate military assistance to Kyiv.

For months, there had been speculation about Russia preparing a fresh offensive in eastern Ukraine. Now it seems like the renewed onslaught is already underway. As Ukraine faces intensified attacks, its allies are meeting again to coordinate further support for Kyiv. NATO members and other allies of Ukraine are gathered in Brussels for talks aimed at providing more weapons to the war-torn country. At the moment Ukraine is on the backfoot – on parts of the eastern front at least – with Russia claiming success around the city of Bakhmut. Although experts say a Russian victory in Bakhmut would not have a strategic impact on the war, Kyiv has fought tooth and nail to keep it. The battle for the city has become an example of why Ukraine needs newer, better weapons fast.

Tanks are among the weapons Kyiv campaigned for most heavily. On Tuesday, Norway pledged another eight, adding to dozens already pledged by the West. As the conflict approaches what may well become a critical phase of the war, those tanks are getting closer to making an appearance on the battlefield. DW’s Alexandra von Nahmen reports from Poland, where Ukrainians are training on the German-made Leopard 2. Ukrainian tank crews are in Poland undergoing training on German-made Leopard 2 tanks some three weeks after Germany greenlighted their re-export to Ukraine. Poland’s president and defense minister watched a training demonstration in the west of the country.

On January 10, 2023, the Ukrainian town of Soledar was reportedly captured. But it wasn’t captured by the Russian army under Vladimir Putin’s command. The announcement came from a relatively unknown man, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who said his troops now controlled the town. The troops are part of the Wagner Group, a private army that has become a prominent force alongside Russian troops in the war against Ukraine.

But they aren’t new. They’ve been secretly fighting for Russia around the world since 2014. In this video, we take a look at their playbook and examine the three main steps they use to spread Russian influence around the world in brutal ways. We also look at how they’ve transformed from a ghost army to a recognizable private military group with insignias and an online brand, changing the nature of this secret group and its role in the world.

You are cells. Your muscles, organs, skin and hair. They are in your blood and in your bones.
Cells are biological robots. They don’t want anything, they don’t feel anything. They are never sad or happy. They just are, right here, right now. They are as conscious as a stone or a chair or a neutron star. Cells just follow their programming that has been evolving and changing for billions of years, molded by natural selection.
They are impossible machines and yet, here they are, driven entirely by the fundamental forces of the universe. The smallest unit of life, right at the border where physics becomes biology.
Sometimes, to get a truer understanding of how amazing something is, you need to hold your breath and dive in really deep. So, what are cells and how do they work?
