Ende November, Anfang Dezember, wenn der erste Schnee die Bergspitzen des Rosengartens bedeckt und sich die Touristen eine Weile rar machen, wird es ruhig auf den Höfen und in den Gaststuben Südtirols. Dann ist Zeit fürs Backen der Weihnachtsplätzchen – oder, wie sie in Südtirol heißen: Weihnachtskekse.

Ganz versteckt liegt das Restaurant „Onkel Taa“ in Bad Egart am Rande der Gemeinde Partschins. Wirtin Janett Platino hat die Gaststube für einige Tage geschlossen. Beim Backen will sie nicht gestört werden. Kürbiskernkipferl, Spitzbuben mit Marillenmarmelade, Mohnchristbäume oder Florentiner Schnitten, jeder Keks muss bei Janett perfekt sein. Und wehe, es wird vorab genascht… Sorgfältig verpackt sie all ihre Plätzchen, heuer sind es vierundzwanzig verschiedene Sorten, in bunte Blechdosen, die sie an Verwandte und Freunde verschenkt.

Is sustainable agriculture possible in Europe? From Spain’s “plastic sea” of greenhouses, to farmer suicides in France, the organics boom and high-tech production, it’s clear that Europe’s agricultural sector is in a period of extreme flux.

And it needs to change: Agricultural landscapes are shaped by the history of our continent and inextricably bound up with its identity. But farmers are struggling. They’re under constant pressure to produce more, at lower prices and can no longer hold out against the stiff competition. Most European farms are still family-run businesses, but it’s the large-scale enterprises that benefit from EU subsidies. These companies practice intensive farming, which we now know has a detrimental effect on biodiversity and human health. This kind of agricultural system is also very bad for soil quality and is now seen as obsolete. With every crisis that occurs, its shortcomings become more evident.

The pace of climate change now requires rapid responses to crucial questions: How to sustainably feed more than 500 million Europeans? What steps can be taken to stem the catastrophe resulting from the dramatic rise in meat consumption (up 60 per cent in 60 years) and its associated intensive production of cereal crops?

Solutions are presenting themselves, and many farmers have already seized the initiative. Throughout the European continent, they are the main drivers of a vital 21st century agricultural revolution: a return to traditional farming methods, intelligent or urban agriculture, fewer mass imports, research into in-vitro meat and meat substitutes. These are just some of the approaches being explored by European farmers in a bid to protect biodiversity, the landscape and the health of human beings.

¿Es posible una agricultura sostenible en Europa a pesar de la presión económica? Paisajes llenos de invernaderos en España, suicidios de campesinos en Francia, el auge de la agricultura orgánica y la producción con el uso de alta tecnología: sin duda, Europa se enfrenta a grandes cambios.

La agricultura europea debe cambiar: los paisajes agrícolas están moldeados por la historia del continente e indisolublemente ligados a su identidad. Sin embargo, a los campesinos no les va bien. Están bajo presión para producir cada vez más barato y ya no pueden resistir la fuerte competencia. La mayoría de las granjas en Europa siguen siendo negocios familiares, pero quienes se benefician de las subvenciones de la Unión Europea son principalmente las grandes empresas, que practican una agricultura intensiva cuyos efectos nocivos para la biodiversidad y la salud humana son bien conocidos. Su modelo de cultivo es muy perjudicial para las condiciones del suelo y se considera obsoleto. Con cada crisis sus deficiencias se hacen más evidentes.

Actualmente el cambio climático requiere respuestas rápidas a preguntas cruciales: ¿cómo alimentar de forma sostenible a más de 500 millones de europeos? ¿Cómo contenerse en cierta medida la catástrofe, que fue desencadenada por el drástico aumento del consumo de carne, del 60 % en 60 años, y el cultivo intensivo de cereales para alimentar al ganado?

Existen soluciones y muchos agricultores ya han tomado la iniciativa. En todo el continente europeo, son ellos los actores clave de una revolución agrícola vital del siglo XXI. El retorno a la agricultura tradicional, la agricultura inteligente o urbana, la reducción de las importaciones masivas o la investigación en el ámbito de la carne in vitro y los sustitutos de la carne son medidas con las que trata de proteger la biodiversidad, el paisaje y la salud humana.
