About DeWalt Brand
DeWalt came to existence in the year 1924 by Raymond DeWalt. In 1922, Mr. DeWalt perfected the woodworking machine that leads to the increase in productivity at Seabrook Farms, a farm he works as a superintendent. After the success of the woodworking machine in 1922, he started the DeWalt Product Company two years after. With the manufacturing plant and office in Leola, Pennsylvania, he established the “Wonder-Worker,” which happened to be a universal woodworking machine.
The company grew from level to level until its break came around the 1940s when it got government contracts during the Second World War. However, in 1947 it was re-incorporated under DeWalt Inc. In 1949 it was acquired by American Machine Foundry and then expanded to Canada but later sold to Black & Decker in 1960 and remains the brand owner to date.
DeWalt from then experienced stability and expansion while breaking new grounds. They launched their first line of portable power tools and accessories in 1992 and around 1994 they rolled in their biggest of them all – 30 new cordless tools and accessories. Included in these tools is their 14.4V cordless driver/drill acclaimed to be the most powerful in its class as at then.
Between then and 2001, the company boasts of above 200 cordless power tools and 800 accessories in the market. Their success story continued in 2010 when they added the 12V MAX Lithium-Ion line of tools to their ever-growing range of tools. As if that was not enough, in 2011 they further expanded their tool line by launching the current 20V MAX system (which we reviewed in the post).
As it stands today, DeWalt makes an array of power tools in diverse manufacturing plants in the US, Canada, and a few other countries. The brand DeWalt represents quality. [2]

Features to Focus On
Before you choose the power drill of your dreams, here are a couple of features that should help you select the perfect one.
How will you use the drill?
Are you looking for a drill that you can use for everyday household jobs such as hanging pictures and building shelves? Do you need to use it for a much bigger renovation project where you need to drill larger holes on bricks and concrete? Drills often have multiple functions that are suitable for different scenarios.
However, it is essential for you to find one that suits your needs. Once you know how you will use the drill, you will narrow down your search, and the choice will be more natural. In this category, you also need to think about the length of the tasks you do each day. The weight and the size of the drill will determine how much time you will spend completing your jobs.
If the tool is bulky and heavy, you will quickly get tired when working. Ensure the drill is comfortable especially if you are working on tough materials and for long periods of time. With a comfortable drill you will work for a more extended period and complete your work faster.
Can you move freely?
Consider how much you want to move when you are working. If you are okay with little to no movement, you can go for the drills that get plugged into the mains. However, if you need to move a lot, consider going for battery-powered drills because they do not have cords and allow you to work anywhere.
These are particularly useful for people who need to work in areas that do not have electricity.
Types of drills:
Of course, before you go out and choose the drills you want, you need to ensure that you know the four main drill types, how they work, and the advantages of each.
Drill drivers:
This option is a versatile one that allows you to cope with all the small jobs in your home. These drills are not just for making holes. They are also drivers. It means that they too can tighten and loosen screws.
They are great because they work on different materials like metal, wood, and masonry. They are also great for assembly and shelving, so pretty much everything a DIYer loves.
Combi drills
These are almost identical to the drill drivers. However, they have a feature that makes them perfect for drilling into harder materials. You will, therefore, drill the rotating drill bit two ribbed metal discs click in and out against each other thus pounding the drill bit forward. For functionality, this feature makes the tool versatile which is great for your home.
You therefore essentially have two tools in one which saves you money on buying two different devices. The tool is also more compact and produces less heat. It is also sturdier and lasts longer.
SDS drills
The self-direct system has a rotary hammer drill that is great for masonry and concrete. It has a hammer function that beats the drill bit as it rotates thus allowing it to work correctly on the dense material. You can also separate the hammer function from the rotation thus enabling you to drill through a lighter material.
Instead of the rotation, you can use a chisel bit to help you chip away at your concrete or brick. It is excellent if you need to hide cables and wires.
On the downside, it is stronger, and it does not work well for DIY projects.
Hammer drills
These are similar to SDS drills in that they are quite powerful and deliver a rapid succession of blows that are great for rock and masonry. Their main difference is that they do all hammers without the rotation function. They are therefore not great at chiseling.
The power sources
You also need to ensure that you know all features that will help you choose correctly. The power source you want will depend on the jobs you do and how long you work with your power tool.
Cordless drills
These are great because you can use them without being near a power source. It is great when you need to work on hard-to-reach areas. On the downside, these tend to be heavier than drills with cords. Their strength is in voltage. The higher it is, the stronger the tool is and the more torque it has to overcome resistance
Battery capacity
The battery is in Amp hour. The more the amps, the longer it can work. You must consider the work that you do. If you do tougher jobs, you will need to have more battery energy. Also, if your cordless drill is powerful, it will use more battery power.
Corded drills
Their strength is in watts. They are great for heavy-duty jobs that will need much time to complete. However, if you have a constant supply of power, you can get your work done without having to waste time recharging or changing batteries. However, you need to be extra, careful when you work so you do not trip on the cord and injure yourself.
Of course, the higher the wattage, the stronger the tool and the more robust the material it can drill into as you work.
Torque
Torque is the twisting force of the drill when you are working on different materials. Ensure the machine you buy does not have just one torque setting. A tool that allows you to switch between different settings ensures that you have the freedom to change between different materials without damaging them.
The stricter materials like a rock will need to have more torque when compared to materials like wood. Some drills will come with as many as 20 torque settings. You need to consider starting at a lower setting and increasing as you go.
Speed
This speed is also known as load speed and determines how fast the drill will rotate. The rate gets set when the drill gets loaded. It can also reduce anything that comes into contact with your drill. Some drills will give you the option of changing the speed depending on the material you are working on at the time.
The lower speeds are great for softer materials while the higher speeds are perfect for more robust materials.
Impact energy
It defines the amount of force the hammer uses to drill into the wall. The higher the rating, the harder the blow and the more impactful the drilling.
Handle design
Always ensure that the drill design is comfortable. Remember that you will be carrying the tool for most of the day. Get one that is comfortable and allows you to hold on without feeling pain. You also do not want to keep re-adjusting your hand.
Drill bits
Check whether the drill bit is interchangeable. Ensure that the drill you get can work with different sizes of drill bits. It will be convenient because you will have the items you need for each job. You also will not have to buy different drills for the same tasks each time. It also needs to fit with most accessories on the market.
Drill vs. Impact Driver vs. Hammer Drill
Drill
Impact driver
Hammer drill
Preferred for its ability to work on specialized functions that cannot get handled by other drills
It is mainly for driving in fasteners like nails and screws
Perfect for hard surfaces like concrete and brick
It is less sensitive than the impact drill and is great when the length of the screw will not affect the project
It stays the way it is throughout
They can also turn into old school hammers
Simple and resemble the old fashion drills
It is shorter and stubbier in appearance. It holds a bit that bits adapt
It is large and takes different bit shapes and sizes
It works like a hammer drill. However, it does not accept other screw bits.
Works in a rotary fashion and does not have much power
It uses more pressure to work and is often too loud
Impact drivers vs. Drills: Do you need both?
Yes, you need both drills and impact drivers. Think of it this way, sledgehammers and peen hammers do roughly the same jobs, but they are perfect for different situations. The right answer is that you should start by buying a drill. As you advance, you can get a kit with both.
The impact drill is perfect for tough materials while the hammer drill is excellent where excessive force is not necessary. The reason why is because it will ruin the stuff you are working on presently. If you work on different materials, you will find that you are more effective with both since you can work on different materials and thus you are more effective.
How to Use Them
Now that you have bought that fancy new drill, you are just itching to use it. The convenience of drills around the home gets matched. Here are a few basic tips that will help you work well with your drill without injuries.
Use the correct bit. Always choose the most appropriate bit for the job you are doing. If you are uncertain, use twist bits which are perfect for most materials. Auger and spade bits are strictly for softwoods.
Set it to forward and reverse appropriately. Always configure the drill to forward (clockwise) and use the forward selector switch. Setting it in the right direction makes it easier for you to drill into the material and take the drill out without widening the hole.
Set the right speed and torque. When you are uncertain, always start from the lowest setting and move to the highest as you see how each setting affects the material you are using.
Always ensure that you take each project slowly and take the time to learn which methods of operation are best for you. Use the right drill for the right materials to prevent injuries and unnecessary fatigue.
FAQs:
Q: What is a brushless impact driver?
A: The word brushless refers to a type of motor that powers an impact drill. The brushes pass electricity to the spin rotor. Brushless motors are such that they do not need electrical connections to spin parts.
Q: Can you use an impact driver to take off lug nuts?
A: Yes, however you need a socket attachment to fit. However, remember that most people tend to over-tighten the lugs. Sometimes they seize as a result of dirt, rust, and time.
Q: Can I use it on drywall?
A: Yes, impact drivers are perfect for drywalls because they are lighter and they do the job faster.
Conclusion
For all homeowners, a drill is a must-have. It provides powerful rotational movements that work into a piece allowing you to tighten and loosen screws. They are loved because they are versatile, efficient, convenient, and do not leave you feeling fatigued. Some come with LED lights that give you the freedom to work in dark and hidden areas.
Consider the type of project you are working with before you make a final decision. Every home needs a drill. Do your homework to know and understand more about job materials and not just the tools.

Comparing DeWalt DW734 vs. DW735 vs. DW735X Planer
DeWalt DW735 Vs. DeWalt734:
One of the first notable differences between the two is the size of their blade. The DW735 uses 13-inch blades, as opposed to the 12 ½ inch blades used by the DW734. From a general perspective, half an inch does not make much of a difference, but when this aspect translates into cut depth and surface flattening quality, the extra length becomes integral.
The second difference between the two is the carriage lock mechanism, which is essential for reducing the effect of snipes.
The DW735 features an automatic locking system, meaning you will not have to worry about locking it in place by yourself. On the other hand, the DW734 features a manual lock. So, with the DW734, you must manually turn a lever to get the lock in place.
If you are concerned about the weight, the DW734 is a suitable option as it weighs at only 80lbs, and its larger brother, the DW735 weighs 92 lbs. The 12lbs difference is a lot mainly if you are concerned with how easy it will be for you to move the planer from your home to the workstation.
Unlike the DW734, which has a single-speed gearbox, the DW735 comes with a two-speed gearbox, which allows you to vary the cuts per inch to suit the type of material you are working with at the time.
For industrial and regular uses, the DW735 beats the DW734 hands down. However, if you are an occasional user, and on a strict budget, the DW734 might be a suitable option for you.
DeWalt 735 Vs. DeWalt 735X
From their identical names, you can tell that the DW734 and DW735X are similar in many ways. Moreover, yes, they both offer the same specifications and features, but the DW735X provides additional features.
These extras in the DW735X are the addition of infeed and outfeed tables, and an extra set of disposable knives for the cutter-head.
Therefore, the choice or rather the decision to use the DW734 or DW735 essentially boils down to how important the spare knives and tables are to you in your work.
If you are starting out, however, the DW735X package planer is an ideal choice as it reduces the snipe significantly compared to the DW735.
Which One is the Best?
You can never go wrong with DeWalt power tools. DeWalt is synonymous with reliability, quality, and performance. Most of their products are time-tested and have excellent reviews.
When it comes to the DeWalt DW734 vs. DW735 vs. DW735X power tools, each of the planers is a possible contender and a favorite planer option.
Though there is a fine line that separates the three, the DeWalt DW735X Package Planer is the most ideal.
For a start, it has all the features plus a few added extras, meaning with the Planer Package, you get a 3-in-1 package but with added features.
Though the DW735X is more expensive than the DW734, it is far superior to the latter with regards to performance, quality, and build. With the DW735, you get the value for your money. [1]
What are the Features to Look for in the Right Planer?
The two primary functions of a planer that is essential to consider are smoothness and accuracy. Therefore, when looking out for the planer features, you should always consider those features that are going to make your smoothing activity easier, more accurate, and more convenient.
After all, you are looking for a tool that requires the least amount of sanding and accurate thickness. However, this is not mean that you should ignore the other factors. Other factors that may influence your purchase decision are dust extraction, noise level, power, and price.
Let us look at the most important features to look for in the right planer. [2]
Size of infeed and outfeed tables:
The infeed and outfeed tables are necessary to minimize the snipe and scallop. Snipe happens due to the up and down movement of wood when fed on the planer.
The scallop, on the other hand, refers to the ripple effect you get when the wood moves past the cutters.
The size of the infeed and outfeed table, particularly those with automatic locks is necessary for reducing the snipe effect on the planer.
Gauges and Stops:
A marked planer with a depth gauge helps in adjusting the thickness of the cut more accurately.
The gauge indicates how much wood removal happens with each pass and assists you in avoiding issues such as taking off too much from your piece of wood or taking too large a bite, which might result in a tear-out or deeper snipe.
You should also be on the lookout for benchtop planers with adjustable preset depth stops that prevent planning a board thinner than your targeted thickness. The adjustable pre-set is a handy feature when planning multiple project parts into identical thicknesses.
Dust Collection:
As with any wood-cutting tool, the ability to remove the sawdust, dust, and chips, which can generate a large mess is a huge benefit when it comes to cleaning up.
Some planers such as the DeWalt DW734 vs. DW735 vs. DW735X Planers have a dust collection system consisting of in-build fans that suck chips away from the cutter head and blow them out the dust port for improved performance.
Power:
The power of a cutting tool is essential as it determines the depth to which a machine can cut and the width of the wood it can cut.
Aside from determining the width and depth of material, you can work with; the power of a machine dictates the speed at which you will complete your task.
A powerful machine allows you to work faster. While there is no specific power level you should look up to, you should always aim for a power that will enable you to handle a decent job, without choking.
How Do Thickness Planers Work?
A thickness planer, also known as a thicknesser or planer is a woodworking machine that trims boards and wood to a consistent thickness throughout their length and flat on both surfaces.
The Function of Thickness Planers
A thickness planer planes a single surface or rather one side of a board at a time. By guiding the cutter head on the planer on the opposite side of the board, the planer gives the board a consistent thickness and sleek and smooth surface.
The thickness planer is excellent at producing flat surfaces and may do so in a single pass.
Most importantly though, the thickness planer, just as its name suggests, produces boards with a consistent thickness and avoids generating tapered boards.
By making passes on either side, a planer is perfect for the initial preparation of an unplaned board.
Operation of a Thickness Planer
Here is a step-by-step procedure of how to use or rather operate a thickness planer for a smooth and consistent board.
Set the table to the desired height and switch the machine on.
Feed the board to the machine until it gets into contact with the in-feeder roller, which grips the board and draws it into the machine and past the rotating cutter head.
Thickness Planer Operation Tip
If you are looking to finish a board with a flat and uniform surface along its length, it is necessary that you start with a board that has at least one perfectly flat reference face.
Feed the planer with the flat face so that the cutter head can remove an amount of material from the opposite face that is parallel to the reference face.
One significant disadvantage of using a thickness planer is snipe. Some of the major contributors of snipe in a thickness planer that you should look out for include incorrect feeding, and misalignment of the in-feed and out-feed tables. You should also be cautious of the unnecessarily high setting of the rollers recessed in the surface of the in-feed table. (more)
Can You Use a Planer as a Jointer?
Both planers and jointers are tools necessary for milling wood, and therefore, they can as well come in handy to build furniture and other projects to correct dimensions.
If your workshop does not have a planer to square up an edge or your wood is too large to fit through, you will be glad to know that you can still use a jointer to flatten and smoothen pieces of wood.
Using a planer in place of a jointer translates to passing boards through on edge and using the clamps to hold them stable. To do this, however, you need to ensure that the clamp clears the sides and does not touch the cutters.
Ideally, you should cut a single edge first, then use a circular saw and edge to do the planning.

Care and Maintenance
Your benchtop planer takes a beating in normal use. Give it routine maintenance for glassy-smooth results board after board.
Here are the top five maintenance tips for caring for your planer:
If you are keeping working on keeping rust at bay, rub a little oil on it for protection
Tighten the bolts regularly for utmost precision
Sharpen cutting edges to achieve a smooth surface
Store the planer away from water or humid conditions
Lubricate the electrically powered wood planers to reduce friction
Keep the planes clean and pay particular attention to the frog and throat areas for any debris.

DeWalt 6-inch Angle Grinder Benefits From Brushless Technology
Cordless angle grinders such as DeWalt’s 60V Max FlexVolt model use brushless motors to gain performance, runtime, service life, and even add features. So what can you gain from putting one on a corded grinder? We got our hands on the DeWalt brushless 6-inch angle grinder to find out.
DeWalt Brushless 6-Inch Angle Grinder Performance
One of the nice things about this angle grinder is DeWalt’s use of a 13-amp brushless motor. That’s common in cordless tools, but not so much on the corded side. In terms of performance, it can spin 5 or 6-inch grinder wheels up to 9000 RPM.
Brushless motors require electronics and that gave DeWalt the opportunity to add several features you’ll notice while you’re using this grinder. For starters, it’s a brushless motor… so no more brush changes.
There’s an electronic brake, stopping the wheel in 1 second or less, depending on the wheel size and mass. With our 6-inch grinding wheel, it took a little longer.
It has a kickback control like many of the cordless models. If your wheel binds up or stalls, the motor senses it and automatically shuts off until you cycle the trigger.
There’s also power loss protection built-in. If you happen to lose power for some reason, the grinder won’t kick back on if you still have your hand on the paddle switch when it returns. This is a paddle switch grinder without a lock-on, so it’s not a huge risk. Still, better safe than sorry.
As a 6-inch grinder, the weight and size are where we expect them to be. It’s 13.6 inches from tip to cord connection and weighs right at 6 pounds. As far as the weight goes, it’s much lighter than going cordless. DeWalt’s FlexVolt angle grinder weighs 8 pounds when you add a 9.0Ah battery!
LED Indicator
There’s an LED light toward the back of the handle that gives you feedback during operation. Normally, it’s green to let you know everything working properly. Red lets you know something’s not quite right. Here are what the patterns mean:
Fast Blink: Power loss protection—cycle the switch
Intermittent Single Blink: Stall or overload—disengage the wheel from the material and cycle the switch
Intermittent Double Blink: Low-quality power source (such as a generator)—switch to more stable power source
Intermittent Triple Blinks: Kickback detected—inspect the wheel for damage and cycle the switch
Solid Read: Thermal protection—make sure vents aren’t clogged and let the tool cool down
Tether-Ready
This is a tether-ready tool for when you’re working at height. The connection is just below the cord connection and swivels easily. It’s a coiled design with an outer sleeve that allows for some give if you’re tethering with a material that doesn’t have much stretch.
Guard Adjustments
Guard adjustments and changes are tool-free as we expect. Just press in the guard release lever (silver button) above the guard and rotate it to the position you want or remove it.
Wheel Changes
Wheel changes are a little different than you might be used to. The flange has two holes in it and looks like you use a spanner wrench to tighten or loosen it. In reality, it’s a hex design and DeWalt includes a hex wrench. It takes a little getting used to, but we found that it’s just as easy. Plus, there’s a lot better chance you have a spare hex wrench that’s the right size than there is a spanner wrench if you loose it.
Side Handle
DeWalt includes a side handle and there are no surprises here. You can install it on either the left or the right, but there’s no top install point if you’re looking for that.
Additional Features
2-stage trigger to prevent accidental activation
6 1/2-foot cord

The Bottom Line
While brushless technology doesn’t add runtime to this grinder (unless you count the time you save changing brushes), it has very real benefits. It may well turn out that cheaper option doesn’t perform as well or even break down sooner after purchase!
