DeWalt Atomic Compact 20V Max Impact Driver Review DCF850

DeWalt DCF850 Redefines What it Means to Be a Compact Impact Driver

At first glance, it’s pretty obvious the DeWalt Atomic 20V Max Impact Driver is very different. So how much performance do you have to give up to get such a compact design? We took a deep dive and tested the DCF850 against the 20V Max XR DCF887 to find out!

Pros

  • Most compact 18/20V impact driver we’ve tested
  • 3-LED light ring around the collet

Cons

  • No significant drawbacks

DeWalt Atomic 20V Max Impact Driver Performance

Out of the gate, the DCF850 sports some familiar specifications. With 1825 in-lbs of torque, 3250 RPM, and 3800 IPM controlled with 3 speeds and a variable speed trigger, the design team dialed the brushless motor in to match the larger DCF887/888.

With the design being so much smaller, we wanted to compare the two side-by-side to see how they do when the rubber hits the road.

The test we ran uses 8-inch RSS screws from GRK Fasteners. We run them into stacked OSB plywood to give us a consistent medium to work with. To make sure it was as fair as possible, both impact drivers started with a freshly charged 5.0Ah battery.

Atomic 20V Max DCF850 20V Max XR DCF887
Test 1 10.28 sec 9.11 sec
Test 2 10.22 sec 9.06 sec
Test 3 9.28 sec 9.65 sec
Test 4 10.14 sec 10.83 sec
Test 5 10.69 sec 9.53 sec
Average Time 10.12 sec 9.64 sec

In this test, the Atomic was about a 1/2 second slower on average. Does half a second matter that much?

It’s up to you, of course, but we don’t mind it for the lighter weight and more compact design you get.

DeWalt Atomic 20V Max Impact Driver Design Notes

Next-Level Compact

Taking over the title of the most compact impact driver, the DCF850 measures just 3.97 inches long. It’s so small, the battery would stick out beyond the collet. DeWalt deals with that by angling the head up slightly, so the battery kicks back a little.

On the weight side, it’s 2.1 lbs. With the 5.0Ah battery we used, the total weight is 3.5 pounds. If you want to go as compact as possible, pair it with a PowerStack battery and the weight is just 2.9 pounds.

Other Features

  • 3-LED light surrounding the collet
  • Reversible belt hook

DeWalt DCF850 Vs DCF887

DeWalt Atomic 20V Max Impact Driver Price

DeWalt offers the Atomic 20V Max 1/4 in. Brushless Cordless 3-Speed Impact Driver in a few options. If you’re good on DeWalt batteries, you can pick up the bare tool for $149. The kit option is $199 and includes a 5.0Ah battery, charger, and carry bag.

DeWalt backs the tool with a 3-year warranty, 1-year free service agreement, and 90-day money-back guarantee.

The Bottom Line

While the specs are the same as the DCF887, the DeWalt Atomic 20V Max impact driver has slightly slower performance in tougher driving tasks. Don’t let that dissuade you, though. The DCF850 is a seriously compact impact driver that still has plenty of speed and muscle to be the only impact driver you need in your tool bag.

Stanley Black & Decker shifts sourcing strategy as battery demand grows | Supply Chain Dive

Dive Brief:

Dive Insight:

Lithium producers and battery makers have struggled to match production to the soaring demand from electric vehicle makers and other companies that depend on the metal for rechargeable batteries.

Chemicals company Allkem saw spot prices of lithium chemicals reach “new records” following supply deficits due to skyrocketing demand in China, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Christian Cortes told analysts last month.

“It’s a very, very tight supply market and as result of this we are seeing a very, very rapid increasing pricing,” he said.

Energizer said it plans to raise battery prices after confronting high costs for lithium and other raw materials. The battery maker will also keep an elevated safety stock for the “foreseeable future” as labor challenges and issues sourcing raw materials continue to make supply volatile, President and CEO Mark LaVigne told analysts Feb. 7.

A rapid expansion in industries electrifying their products pushed Sunlight Group Energy Storage Systems, a global producer of industrial batteries, to expand investment in lead recycling methods and is looking at ways to recycle lithium.

“We are investing in new product lines and increasing capacity across our plants in Europe and North America to meet this demand,” Todd M. Sechrist, CEO and President of Sunlight Batteries USA, said in an email.

Stanley Black & Decker is also investing in innovation to add capacity — the company’s venture capital arm contributed to a $5.7 million investment funding round for 3-D lithium ion battery company Prieto Battery in August, according to a press release.

The company also introduced a power stack battery system in November using lithium-ion pouch cells instead of cylindrical cells, which are in higher demand because of their use in automobiles, CEO Jim Loree said during the company’s Q3 earnings call. Innovation projects worth approximately $200 million are also currently in the works.

“We are continuing to invest in innovation, manufacturing, automation, inventory, and our supply chain to meet the strong demand in the near-term and fuel sustainable growth over the medium and long-term,” Loree told analysts this month.

DeWalt Table Saws Make Your Woodworking Projects Easy And Enjoyable

If you’re looking to tackle some carpentry around your house or even dip your toes into woodworking, a good table saw is invaluable.

Table saws are very different from hand saws and miter saws, because rather than being hand-held, they have circular saw blades mounted on arbors that are powered by electric motors. The blades are designed to handle serious woodworking projects, but they can easily tackle more minor cuts. Additionally, table saws are designed for making longer cuts than you might be able to handle precisely with a hand saw.

If you never took wood shop in school, a table saw consists of the circular saw blade, a blade cover, a table and mount to hold the saw in place, a rip fence, anti-kickback claws and gauges for height adjustment. Professionals use cabinet saws and contractor table saws in their shops, but you can opt for something more portable like a job-site table saw, a hybrid table saw or a mini saw.

As one of the most trusted brands in power tools, DeWalt has a wide range of professional-grade saws, including miter saws, reciprocating saws, circular saws and table saws. The brand has been in business since 1924, and its products go through extensive worksite research and testing. They are backed by a 90-day, money-back guarantee, as well as a three-year limited warranty and a one-year free service contract.

Our sister site Don’t Waste Your Money has a team of experts that spends hundreds of hours analyzing, testing and researching products to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. Here are their top picks for DeWalt table saws.

DeWalt 15-Amp Corded 10-Inch Table Saw & Rolling Stand

Home Depot

This impressive DeWalt table saw has a 15-amp motor capable of spinning the blade at 4,800 revolutions per minute and is on wheels, making it easy to roll it to where the work is. Its sturdy rack-and-pinion telescoping fence system is strong enough to saw through large sheets of lumber, and it has a built-in power-loss reset. You’ll also like its compact size and ease of use. Note that its enhanced features mean this saw is priced higher than others that DeWalt makes. Still, it got the top marks from Don’t Waste Your Money’s researchers.

DeWalt 15-Amp Corded 8 1/4-Inch Heavy-Duty Table Saw & Rolling Stand

Home Depot

This heavy-duty DeWalt table saw also includes a durable table, rolling stand and extra storage space. Its rack-and-pinion fence rails support even the most difficult jobs. This saw also has a power-loss reset to guard against accidental restarts. Note that there is the risk of deviations unless you use an improvised feed table with this saw.

DeWalt 15-Amp Corded 8 1/4-Inch Compact Job-Site Table Saw

Home Depot

If you’re looking for a more lightweight table saw that’s still plenty durable, check out this job-site model. It’s perfectly sized to be packed up and transported but still boasts a 15-amp, 5,800-RPM motor for power and efficiency. The sturdy metal cage also keeps it stable while you are sawing. Be aware that this table saw does not come with a wheeled base, making it a little less portable out of the box. In addition, the 8.5-inch size limits the thickness you can safely cut, so this one is likely best for smaller job.

DeWalt 15-Amp Corded 10-Inch Job-Site Table Saw, Rolling Stand and Atomic Drill Driver Kit

Home Depot

If you’re looking for a great kit that will let you tackle a list of jobs right out of the box, this one packs a 10-inch table saw with a rolling stand and a powerful drill, all from DeWalt. The saw has a 15-amp, 4,800-RPM motor with a 32 1/2-inch rip capacity. It comes with a 20-volt, compact 1/2-inch drill, two 20-volt lithium-ion battery packs, a 20-volt charger and a carrying bag. This table saw even has onboard storage for your other tools.

How To Use A DeWalt Table Saw Safely

Safety is critical when using any saw or other power tools, so be sure to look over the instructions and before you get started and handle with care. Wear protective goggles, a respirator, work gloves and hearing protection while working with any table saw. And do not turn your table saw on while any wood is touching the blade.

Adobe

When making crosscuts, always use your miter gauge, not the rip fence. You should use the rip fence when making rip cuts. Keep the wood completely flat against your table when cutting, and remember to turn the saw off and unplug it when it’s not in use, especially if anyone else uses your woodworking space for any reason.
