Droplets bounce off each in new triple Leidenfrost effect
A new type of Leidenfrost effect that causes droplets of different liquids to bounce off each other when placed on a hot surface has been discovered by researchers in Mexico and France. Led by Felipe Pacheco-Vázquez at the Autonomous University of Puebla, the team found that this behaviour stems from the three simultaneous points of contact between the two droplets and the surface – creating what the team has called a triple Leidenfrost effect.
When a liquid droplet is placed on a sufficiently hot surface, its evaporation creates a cushion of vapour that separates it from the surface – causing the droplet to levitate. Known as the Leidenfrost effect, this levitation both hinders the evaporation of the droplet and allows it to glide across the surface with little friction. Although this effect has been known for centuries, physicists are still making surprising discoveries about how levitating droplets behave in certain scenarios.
In their study, Pacheco-Vázquez’s team looked at what happened when a series of droplets are placed on a hot, slightly concave surface, where the droplets naturally gravitate towards the lowest point in the centre. When water droplets were used, the researchers saw that they coalesced almost immediately on contact with each other: quickly merging into a single, large droplet. But when the water droplets and ethanol droplets were used, the team found that different types of droplets bounced off each other several times, before eventually coalescing.
Three vapour layers
To explain this behaviour, the researchers considered the three separate vapour layers involved in the process. These layers are found beneath each droplet, and between the two droplets as they make contact. This third layer forms due to the difference in boiling temperatures between the two droplets: causing the hotter droplet (water in this case) to act as a surface on which ethanol, with its lower boiling point, will evaporate. This generates a second layer of ethanol vapour which prevents the two liquids from coalescing – and the droplets will bounce away from each other.
Eventually, the faster-evaporating ethanol droplet reaches a size similar to the capillary length, which is related to the density difference between the two liquids, and the surface tension at their interface. At this point, the ethanol can no longer produce enough vapour to withstand its attraction to water, and the liquids finally merge together.
The team repeated this experiment using 10 different types of liquid. As predicted by their new theory, they observed the same bouncing behaviour for droplets with widely differing boiling points. In cases where boiling points were more closely matched, the droplets coalesced without any bouncing.
In reference to the three vapour layers involved in the process, the researchers have dubbed it the triple Leidenfrost effect. They now hope that their theories could open up new applications in microfluidics: including a better understanding of how fuel droplets interact with each other in overheated engines.

So I thought I was getting a good quality metal band and what I received was disappointing. It looks cheap and doesn’t completely match my rose gold watch. Looks like painted plastic and is not shiny at all like the pictures depicted. I did appreciate that it brought the tool to adjust the links so at the very least it fits properly. I will keep it to use as an everyday band but I really bought it to look a little flashy and it doesn’t.

I received my 42/44mm Apple Watch bracelet today for my Apple Watch 4. The rose gold is GORGEOUS (although it appears a bit more of a pink-champagne color to me, which I think is even better, but they also sell a Champagne gold band, so I may buy that one as well for versatility)! I don’t normally take time to write reviews, but this quality band exceeded my expectations. I have wide wrists and thought it would not be wide enough, but it was actually 2 links too large, but they include a small, nifty tool that makes it EASY to remove extra links (or add back in, if needed). And, you can store the extra links in the tools compartment box (and it comes with an extra pin, too!) I am betting I can use the tool to fix some of my regular watches too that use these types of pin links.
The “diamond” accents are a great feminine touch. The picture does not do it justice. Everybody who has seen it has commented on how beautiful it is, and those that know me instantly commented that this is just my type of “jewelry.”
Sounds silly, but I would wear a designer watch on my left wrist and my Apple Watch with the silicone pink strap on my right wrist (wanting some bling/fashion for a watch, and justifying that the other watch was just my smart watch). Well, now with this band, I will no longer need to wear my designer watches because this suffices as a functional jewelry piece! Because I just got it today, I can’t comment on its longevity, but other reviews don’t question that, and now that I have it in hand (well, on wrist : )), I can say that it appears well made and durable.
I did also get the Smiling Apple Watch 4 case in rose gold (different seller) and it matches the band very well! I am not going to review the case until I wear it more, as per other reviews it is likely it will get moisture inside and it may not always be greatly responsive to touch, but I wanted a cover since I broke the screen on my Apple Watch 3 last week and found it costs $289 to replace the screen (out of warranty), so I instead opted to buy the model 4 and wear a cover. But as for the Secbolt bling band, I am very pleased!!

I received this band today. I have to say that I really like it. It has a slightly heavy feel which I like. I ended up having to remove 6 links (3 from each side) to get it to fit snugly on my wrist (which you need with Apple Watch). I have very small wrists though. I started my taking 2 from each side then one more from each side, checking fit each time. Learning to use the tool was a little challenging. You can’t see where the little hole is to insert the tip of the tool once you lay the band down on the tool (I even tried a flashlight, no dice). I broke the tip on my tool on the first try. They send 2 extra tips (the bottom of the tool pops open and there they are!) they must know that most people are going to break it. On my 2nd try, I unscrewed the tool back pretty far and lined the band up to where I thought the hole was. I slid the band around a little until I felt the tip ‘pop’ into the little hole ever so slightly. I held it in place with my thumb and then twisted the tool while holding it. Once the band hit the other side of the tool, the tip just pushed the pin through (it’s important that you line the ‘exit’ side of the pin up with the opening in the tool so it has room to be pushed out). Remove the band from the tool and pull the pin the rest of the way out with your fingers. Repeat to remove the pin on the other side of the link you’re removing. To put the band back together, just hold the 2 pieces together and put the pin back in (careful to make sure the pin is facing the same way that it was when you took it out. Both ends are not the same). You can push it almost all the way in with your fingers. The last little bit requires pressure with a hard surface (I used the side of my needle nose pliers that I had put to change the tool tip). They send you very vague written directions, but there is a link for a YouTube video. It’s worth watching. The band came in a little metal box (aluminum?) that reminds me of one of those metal gift card boxes, but deeper. Once I was done I removed all of the packing foam and used the box to put little odds and ends that were in my drawer in (bonus). The band is slightly shiny black color with very subtle bling. If you are expecting a ton of bling, don’t get this band. I like the subtle bling and slight shiny metal. The clasp on my band is in no way lose. It’s actually almost difficult to open and close. I’m secure in the fact that it will not come open while I’m wearing it (unlike some of the reviews). I also do not have any problem getting it open to take it off. I have no idea how well it will hold up over time, but for now, it’s great.
Update: It’s been over a year and a half and this band is still like it was when I bought it. The finish has not changed despite the occasional perfume and water. The clasp is still tight. I have used this band exclusively since I got it. It was definitely worth the money.

Balers’ defense shines in 38-0 win over Alisal – SanBenito.com | Hollister, San Juan Bautista, CA
Through the first four games of the season, San Benito High’s defense has stood tall. The Haybalers pitched their second shutout with a 38-0 win over visiting Alisal on Friday night.
“The defense is playing stellar,” Balers coach Bryan Smith said. “They’ve allowed three points over the course of the last two games. Now the opponents, it’s not Salinas, it’s not Palma, it’s not Aptos. But we’re playing some good defense, guys are flying around the field, they’re in the right position to make plays, so it’s fun to watch.”
Especially Maliki Harrison, who on at least two occasions had such a beat on Alisal’s snap count that he was literally in the backfield as the ball was being snapped.
“Coach (Tod) Thatcher had their defensive call and their split was a 3-foot split, and we could see Maliki every time he was going to knife right through the gap and he did,” Smith said. “He did a really good job and is someone who has really come around since spring and now he might be one of our better defensive players.”
Smith also noted the team’s edge players, Derek Sandoval and Mateo Reyes, the former for his textbook tackling and the latter for coming up with an interception on Alisal’s opening possession of the third quarter.
“Mateo played the flat curl concept really well and was rewarded for it,” Smith said.
Billy Aviles, Julien Garcia and Chance Brown along with others got the push on the defensive line and were stout up front. Aviles recovered a fumble that San Benito turned into seven points midway through the second. The Balers totaled 307 yards of offense while limiting the Trojans to 112. Cornerback/safety Jayden Freidt was a standout defensively but showed his dynamic skills on the offensive side of the ball when he turned a simple swing pass for a 73-yard touchdown.
With San Benito (4-0, 2-0) leading 7-0 early in the second quarter, Tyler Pacheco hit Freidt on the right side. Freidt juked one defender and was gone, blowing by the Alisal defense to the end zone. The sequence highlighted the Balers’ big-play capability.
“We run that play in practice and I run it every few so often,” Freidt said. “I finally got the chance to run it in a game and was grateful for the opportunity. I don’t practice with the offense, but I’m ready when they need me to go.”
The Balers turned four of the Trojans’ five turnovers into 28 points in a contest that was never close, resulting in a running clock in the fourth quarter. Ethan Salcedo made a nice play on special teams, recovering a kickoff after Anthony Mendoza delivered a beautiful kick that had backspin on it and allowed Salcedo to beat the Alisal players to the ball.
It’s been a while since San Benito has been getting this much production out of their kickers as they have this season. Manuel Velazco was solid yet again, converting a 33-yard field goal for the final points of the game. Even though the offense hit some big plays—Pacheco and Isaiha Molina connected for an electrifying 69-yard TD—Smith said the team needs to be better, especially against the likes of Salinas, Palma and Aptos.
“We have a lot to clean up,” he said. “We try to reiterate that to our guys before the game, during the game, at halftime and at the end of the game. We have a really good team, but we can be so much better if we can just clean things up, become more consistent and execute better. I mean, I guess it’s what every team would want to do, but we have the ability to do that so we have to find a way to clean it up.”
