Mourners say goodbye to Valentina Orellana Peralta, girl fatally shot by LAPD officer

The gray casket of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana Peralta stood between a pair of photos of the teen and funeral wreaths made up of white roses and purple flowers.

More than 100 people who came to mourn the death of the Chilean girl stood up from their chairs as they watched her parents — Soledad Peralta and Juan Pablo Orellana — walk in, arm-in-arm, amid the sound of gospel music, with civil rights leader the Rev. Al Sharpton.

The parents wore black shirts and masks that read “Justice for Valentina” as they slowly made their way to the open casket of their daughter, who wore a pink dress and glasses.

Monday’s funeral service for Valentina came two weeks after she was killed by an LAPD police officer while shopping for clothes with her mother in North Hollywood. It also comes a day before the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners is scheduled to have its first meeting of the year and discuss the case.

Among the attendees at the funeral for Valentina Orellana Peralta were relatives of others killed by police. It’s the club to which no one wants to belong.

An activist, Pacheco said she wanted to pay her final respects to the slain girl.

“My heart breaks for the family, for their daughter,” Pacheco said. “This killing was so unnecessary, there were other ways the police could have handled this.”

Sitting across the room was Rosa Miller. She said Valentina’s shooting hit close to home. Miller said her friend, 49-year-old Vanessa Marquez, an actress, was shot and killed by South Pasadena police in 2018.

“The shooting triggered a lot of emotions, considering how young [Valentina] was and how senseless her death was,” Miller said as her eyes welled up. “People should be outraged.”

Most of those sitting inside the church were family members and mostly Black activists and residents, including members of the church. Miller was one of few Latinos present at the funeral. She said she was disappointed by the relatively small Latino presence.

“People need to wake up, especially the Latino community,” she said. “She was a Latina.”

“If a 14-year-old dying in her mother’s arms doesn’t enrage you then what will?” she added.

Others present at the funeral service included Refuge Senior Pastor Bishop Noel Jones and attorneys Ben Crump and Rahul Ravipudi, who are representing the family.

Crump has represented numerous families of people killed by police, including George Floyd, whose May 2020 slaying by a Minneapolis police officer triggered protests around the world.

As he stood on the stage with a large screen showing an image of Valentina, Crump looked over at the family and vowed he and others would seek justice for their daughter.

“Justice represents the protection of the innocent,” Crump said. “And who is more innocent than your 14-year-old angel, Valentina.”

Ravipudi took the stage next and told Valentina’s parents that as a son of immigrants, he understood how hard it was for them to sacrifice so much and work so hard to provide a better life for their daughter.

“In the short time Valentina was here, her light shined bright,” Ravipudi said. “She was excelling in school. She had friends, she had the love and support of her family. And on Dec. 23, Valentina’s life was needlessness taken away with an AR-15 by the very people who were charged with protecting her.”

Ravipudi told the parents that their daughter did not die in vain. He and others would hold those responsible for her death accountable and most importantly, make sure LAPD changed how it responded to incidents like the one that left their daughter dead, he said.

“As Gandhi said, ‘The truth never damages a cause that’s just,’” he said. “It is our job that the truth and only the truth is revealed.”

The shooting of Valentina occurred on Dec. 23, 2021. She and her mother were in the changing room of a Burlington store when one of three rounds fired by Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. penetrated the wall and struck the girl. Valentina died in the arms of her mother, whose screams were captured on police body camera videos of the incident.

Jones was firing at a man, later identified as Daniel Elena-Lopez, who had attacked customers with a bicycle lock and was holding the lock at the time of the shooting, according to the video footage and police.

Police dispatchers that night received multiple, conflicting 911 calls about the assaults, some saying — incorrectly — that Elena-Lopez had a gun.

Valentina was pronounced dead at the scene, as was Elena-Lopez.

Miller, Pacheco and others said they believe police could have deescalated the incident.

At around noon a gospel choir took the stage. People rose from their seats, clapped, danced and sang, “No matter the problem, put it in God’s hands.” In front, feet from their daughter’s casket, Orellana and Peralta clapped and moved side to side to the music.

Sharpton then took the stage to deliver his eulogy. Crump said the family requested Sharpton’s presence. In recent years, he has addressed grieving families of victims who have been killed, including relatives of George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, Eric Gardner, Michael Brown and Ahmaud Arbery.

From the stage, tapping his index finger on the wooden podium, Sharpton said it didn’t matter that the police officer who killed Valentina was Black, or that Valentina was an immigrant in the United States.

(Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times)

“This is not only a tragedy, it is a travesty,” Sharpton said, while some in the crowd answered, “amen.” “There is nothing normal about shooting so recklessly that a young teenage girl looking to live the American dream, that was shopping with her dear mother, Soledad, possibly getting a Christmas dress that ends up being the dress for her funeral “

“This could have been my daughter, this could have been your daughter,” he added.

Family of the girl said Valentina brought them joy and love. They described her as a kind person who cared for the well-being of others, especially animals. Her father said she was a strong advocate of animal rights. He said his daughter wanted to become a U.S. citizen like her older sister, attend college and become an engineer.

“She had many dreams and aspirations, like any 14-year-old had,” Juan Pablo Peralta said.

He said in the short amount of time she was in the country, she had learned the English language and excelled at school, getting good grades in math and physics.

Her parents said their daughter was interested in robotics.

“She wanted to build me a robot that would help me clean,” Soledad Orellana said, speaking softly.

Both parents said it has been a painful time for them but they hope that they can secure justice for their daughter and will also help advocate for others who may need their help and support.

“I’m starting to understand,” Orellana said while standing behind the podium “that my daughter was an angel whose mission was to bring peace and love.”

There was a moment of silence at the end of the service before pallbearers carried Valentina’s casket outside to the hearse that would take her to her final resting place, amid a flurry of released white doves.

Doves are released at the conclusion of the funeral.

Married deputies who died days apart laid to rest together

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, please call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255, text HOME to 741741 or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for additional resources.

Clayton Osteen and Victoria Pacheco, married deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, were laid to rest together on Saturday, January 8 after both died by suicide two days apart last week.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office shared a Facebook post on Saturday with photos from the somber service. The photos were accompanied by a heartfelt message written by Sheriff Ken J. Mascara, reading in part, “Today we say goodbye to our brother and sister, Deputy Clayton Osteen and Deputy Victoria Pacheco. May you rest in peace.”

“We greatly appreciate the outpouring of support and love from our fellow law enforcement agencies and the community,” the message concluded.

Mascara announced the tragic news in a Facebook past on Tuesday, January 4 mourning the loss of two of the county’s deputies. In the statement, he said that Osteen, 24, died on January 2 when he was taken off of life support after a suicide attempt made on New Year’s Eve. Pacheco, 23, died by suicide two days later.

“As sheriff, I saw these two deputies as young, ambitious, and a great complement to my already amazing group of professionals,” Mascara recalled of Osteen and Pacheco.

The sheriff cited the importance of mental health within his statement, writing, “While it is impossible for us to fully comprehend the private circumstances leading up to this devastating loss, we pray that this tragedy becomes a catalyst for change, a catalyst to help ease the stigma surrounding mental well-being and normalize the conversation about the challenges so many of us face on a regular basis.”

The couple shared one child together, a one-month-old son, Jayce Osteen. A GoFundMe page created by a friend of Osteen said that the infant would be adopted “by a close family member.”

Osteen, a Florida native, served in the United States Marine Corp, according to his obituary. He became a Saint Lucie County Sheriff’s Deputy in 2019 and during that time, became a SWAT team member, Deputy of the Quarter, and was awarded Deputy of the Year in 2020.

Pacheco became a deputy in 2020. She was remembered in her obituary for being a “confident, strong willed, and fearless young woman,” her artistic abilities, and her love of adventure, including surfing, hiking and sky-diving.

Happy birthday! Compendio for everyone! (At least the bits I’ve already done)

It’s my 45th, and it’s a little past my Patreon’s first. So let’s celebrate!

Linked in this post you’ll find the Prologue and the First Dialogue of Pacheco’s Compendio. Because of the generous support of my Patrons (who receive these releases three months early), I’ve had the time and space to read up on Aristotelian and Renaissance science to update some of the footnotes and text in these two files.

Here’s that !

Here’s that First Dialogue!

Now, on to some details.

What is Compendio?

The Compendio de la filosofia y destreza de las armas, de Jerónimo de Carranza, is Don Luis Pacheco‘s heavy (heavy!) edit of Carranza‘s Philosophy of Arms, considered to be the source of an Iberian fencing style called la verdadera destreza (LVD).

Pacheco deliberately notes in his prologue that he’s gone through Carranza’s text and omitted anything not directly related to fencing. For someone whose sentences are shockingly long and tortuous, he’s done a good job with his edits, given his stated goal.

How much has he taken out?

The Prologue is entirely Pacheco’s composition. He’s tossed 66% of Carranza’s original text from the First Dialogue.

And it still makes sense?

Surprisingly so. I’ve been cross-checking against the full text of Carranza’s Philosophy of Arms and have tracked down where his seams are, and where he’s put words in the mouths of characters who didn’t say them in the original. I have to assume the choices are deliberate, and it’ll be worth examining them more deeply to see what they reveal about Pacheco, his beliefs regarding LVD, and his prowess as an editor.

How many dialogues are there?

There are four. The first, third, and fourth are pretty science/argument heavy. The second, which is currently in progress, is lighter, and plays like a farce. It’d be fun to see it on stage. It’s also a very smart choice on Carranza’s part, I feel (see my previous blog post for more on that).

How long is this taking you?

About what I expected, maybe a little slower (which is always the case with editorial projects). I am hoping and aiming to get the whole of the text finished by around this time next year.

Finished? What does that mean?

It means completing the first pass translation of this text. I’ll then want to do a second pass, possibly a third. If I can, I’ll send it out for copy editing because it will be far too close to me for me to do that job well.

And what happens then?

With the Patreon? I’ll select a new text to work on. There are so many good ones to choose from.

With the Compendio translation? I’ll prep the reviewed and edited manuscript for print, so folks can grab proper hard copies. I’m thinking of ways to bind and lay out the translation to give folks space for notes, if they feel that’s a benefit. Regardless, the Patreon first-pass-translation PDFs will always be free.

When might we see that Compendio hard copy?

Anywhere between Christmas of 2022 or around this time in 2023, depending on how much other freelance I get, or if I take up a full time job, etc.

Once again, thank you to the HEMA community, the LVD community, and to my Patrons for all their support. LVD! In English! WOO!

How To Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors – The 5 Simple Secrets To Success!

Have you struggled in the past with trying to start your own vegetable plants from seeds indoors? Well, today’s article is going to change that for good!

Starting seeds indoors can be an intimidating process for a lot of gardeners. Especially for those new to gardening. But when it comes right down it, by following just a few simple tried and true tricks of the seed starting trade – anyone can have success starting their own vegetable plants indoors.

The best part of all, there is no need for fancy or expensive equipment. Nor does it require hours and hours of endless and tedious work. In fact, with just the most basic of seed starting supplies, you can grow strong, productive and healthy plants for your garden – all while saving big money in the process!

how to start vegetable seeds indoors
These cucumber seedlings will soon be in their permanent home in the garden, and ready to start supplying a boatload of cucumbers for fresh eating and pickling! With just a few basic supplies, anyone can start and grow healthy, beautiful vegetable transplants for their garden.
Save Big On Your Garden…

Let’s face it, like everything else, vegetable plants and transplants are getting more and more expensive to purchase every year. And when you consider that a few packets of heirloom seeds can be less than the purchase price of a single common vegetable plant in a nursery – growing your own just makes sense!

In addition, when you limit yourself to only purchasing plants, your selection is limited to what the nursery or big box store wants to sell. Last but not least – and this is important – growing your own plants from seed is so very rewarding!

So with all of those benefits in mind, here is a look at the 5 simple secrets that can turn you into a pro when it comes to starting your own plants indoors this year.

The 5 Simple Secrets To Starting Vegetable Seeds Indoors

#1) Your Seed Starting Soil Matters!

One of the biggest mistakes made when starting seeds indoors is not using the proper soil. Seeds germinate and grow better when they have nutrient-filled soil that is both loose and well draining.

Using garden soil, top soil or old, dried out potting soil are all big no-no’s when trying to start seeds. Instead, use a quality seed starting soil or enhanced potting soil that has plenty of nutrients for powering young seedlings.

seed starting soil
Use a good quality seed starting soil to help with germination and early growth. Seed starting soil needs to be light, airy and full of nutrients for easy root growth.

There are plenty of great options on the market, or you can make your own easily as well. Espoma and Purple Cow Organics both make organic seed starting soil that is loose, but still allows for great moisture retaining qualities around the seed. And when it comes to germinating and early growth, that is a huge key to success.

Making Your Own Homemade Seed Starting Soil

You can also quite easily make your own amazing seed starting soil from ordinary potting soil and a few added ingredients.

For years, we have used a combination of potting soil, compost, worm castings and perlite to make an incredibly nutrient filled soil that is perfect for starting seeds. See : How To Create Your Own Amazing Seed Starting Soil

One word of caution, avoid using old potting soil or recycling soil from last year’s container plants. It may seem like a great way to save a few dollars, but the soil from old containers is weak and depleted of nutrients, which makes it a bad choice for seed starting soil.

#2 Use Grow Lights, Not The Windowsill – How To Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors

Plain and simple – sunny windows and windowsills are not a good option for growing vegetable plants from seed. Plants will germinate and grow, but the light source is too far away for proper growth.

window seedlings
Unfortunately, windows are not good for growing vegetable seedlings. The young plants spend their resources growing toward the sun, leading to thin, weak seedlings.

Plants growing in windowsills end up being extremely weak, thin and leggy. But don’t think just because you can’t grow in a window that you need fancy equipment. The light spectrum required for growing vegetables simply doesn’t require special lighting.

We have been growing our own seeds indoors from ordinary, inexpensive fluorescent and now LED shop lights for years. And with great success! Basic LED shop lights, or T8 or T25 fluorescent shop lights with cool white bulbs work wonders. We like the LED best because they are so inexpensive to operate.

By simply keeping the bulbs about an inch above the plants as they grow, it allows for the seedlings to grow slow and strong. As for heating mats, as long as the room you are growing in is a minimum of 65 degrees, they will grow fine without them.

But remember, the warmer the room, the better. Try to place your seedlings in the warmest room of the house. A room that stays near 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit is the most ideal for starting seeds. (See: DIY Seed Starting Stand)

#3  Use Quality Seeds – How To Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors

Great transplants start with great seed. If you are not saving your own seeds from year to year, purchase good, fresh seed stock from a reputable source. Be leery of those old dusty seed racks in the back of stores!

Listen In To Our Podcast On Starting Seeds Below…

Old seeds, or seeds that have been stored improperly can lose their strength and vitality quickly. For starters, it can lead to poor germination. But even more, those that do germinate from older seed can be weak and feeble.

Use seed that is no older than twelve to 18 months. We try to never use seeds that we have had more than one additional season. In other words, if we purchase a new packet of seeds this year, we will keep the unused seeds stored safely in our refrigerator until next year to use one more time.

After that, we discard the seeds and order new. For just a few dollars, it is far better to purchase seeds that are fresh and viable for planting.

#4 Water Properly – How To Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors

It can’t be said enough that proper watering is vital for good seedling growth. Water too little, and plants can’t absorb nutrients in the soil. Water too much, and the roots can quickly become water-logged, once again causing them to be unable to absorb nutrients.

To get seeds to germinate, gently water the soil so that it is slightly damp. If the soil is too wet or water-logged, it will rot the seeds and/or drown the frail sprouts. Our favorite way to water newly planted seeds is with a spray bottle.

The mist is perfect for gently moistening the soil without over-saturating the surface. Once you have moistened the soil, cover the trays with a plastic dome or plastic wrap to keep the soil slightly damp and moist.

spraying seeds
No matter the container you grow in, getting moisture to the seeds below is important. One of the best ways to do this is with a spray bottle.

Once the first few seeds germinate, take the cover off and put the plants under the lights. Once seeds germinate, their water needs will continue to grow weekly. Check the soil with the touch of your fingertip each day. If its dry to the touch, gently water the soil to keep moist. Soil should be on the damp side, but not soggy.

That spray bottle is once again great for watering the first few days after seeds germinate. The mist can’t knock over the tender shoots when they are most vulnerable.

#5  Make Sure To Harden Plants Off – How To Start Vegetable Seeds Indoors

Finally, don’t forget to acclimate your plants to the great outdoors by hardening them off before planting day! In fact, one of the biggest mistakes made by indoor seed growers is to skip this step before planting, and it can have disastrous results for your plants.

Plants need to get used to the fluctuation of outdoor temperatures.  After all, they have been in the comfy confines of the home their whole life up to this point.

secrets to starting vegetable seeds indoors
We take our plants outside as soon as the weather allows. We protect them from excessive winds with a few boards placed around the flats.

A few weeks before planting day, start setting seedlings out on warmer days. Continue to give them more and more outside exposure unless the temperatures are expected to drop to near or below freezing. Hopefully, weather permitting, they can start staying outside around the clock a week or so before planting.

Once planting day comes, your plants are tough and ready to grow. Start getting ready now to grow your own seeds late this winter. Not only will you be rewarded with incredibly tasty vegetables – you can save big money! Happy Gardening – Jim and Mary.

Remembering Leon Spinks’ forgotten upset over Muhammad Ali 42 years ago today

Did you know Leon Spinks once upset Muhammad Ali?

Leon Spinks passed away on February 5 due to prostate cancer at the age of 67. On this date 42 years ago, he starred in one of sports’ larger-than-life upsets over one of the most unforgettable boxers to have ever stepped into a ring. If you compile your own Tale of the Tape retrospective, without any context, it wouldn’t make any sense. But when you watch Leon Spinks’ seemingly improbable outboxing of Muhammad Ali on this date in 1978, it’s a tale that tells itself.

Perhaps Ali, who was 36 at the time of the fight, underestimated the 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist, who had 50 fewer pro fights than the champ and was 12 years his junior at just 24 years old. Watching the much-younger Spinks outwork, outland, and outclass Ali, then the WBC and WBA World Heavyweight Champion, you could see the classic unfolding of an ambitious challenger outpointing a legendary titleholder who owned the division for the better part of two decades. Still, it was clear that Ali was nearing the end of his once-illustrious career. So much so, in fact, that longtime Ali cornerman and physician Ferdie Pacheco, who was on commentary, reiterated his desire for Ali to retire during Round 1 of the bout.

Ali, at 55 wins and 2 losses, with 37 knockouts, ventured into the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas as a 10-1 favorite. His idiosyncratic glow was still vibrant upon entry, but it was clear he wasn’t quite the same Ali who dethroned Sonny Liston in 1964, who devoured George Foreman in Zaire in 1974, and who derailed Joe Frazier in the Thrilla in Manila in 1975. He was even 17 months removed from defeating Ken Norton in Yankee Stadium in 1976. But even still, Spinks (6-0-1, 5 KOs) wasn’t supposed to arrive so emphatically. The challenger was four months removed from a draw with heavyweight journeyman Scott DeLoux, who entered his bout with Spinks, who was 5-0 at the time, with a record of 21-6-1, with 13 KOs.

Spinks weighed 27 pounds fewer than Ali’s 224 on that night. Numerically, his split decision victory is not in a historical context matching Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson, the 31-year-anniversary of which passed last Thursday. But Spinks defeating Ali remains an instrumental piece in the list of the 20th century’s biggest sports upsets. And it came at a time when boxing was still one of the most popular sports in America, with the fight airing on CBS for millions of viewers.

“In that fight, everything clicked,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said of the bout. “[Spinks] came in with a game plan, and he beat Ali. It wasn’t that Ali wasn’t at his best, but Leon shocked everybody with how good Leon was.”

Perhaps it gets unfairly lost in the context of historical upsets because Ali immediately won their rematch seven months later — Ali winning the heavyweight title an unprecedented third time. The loss not only ended Spinks’ time as champion, but was the final victory of Ali’s historic career.

Spinks’ career lasted another 17 years, though he only earned one other heavyweight title shot, losing to Larry Holmes in 1981 by TKO in Round 3. (He also lost a cruiserweight title shot to Dwight Muhammad Qawi in 1986.)

It wasn’t Douglas-Tyson, Ali-Foreman, or Andy Ruiz versus Anthony Joshua in terms of upsets. However, it still deserves its place and remembrance as one of the incredible feats in heavyweight boxing history, and perhaps in all of sports.

Robot umpire whiffs on strike-three call in minors’ Atlantic League

Juuuuust a bit outside.

Do you remember the part in Iron Man 2 where Tony Stark was in court and the United States government was essentially trying to take the Iron Man technology for themselves and their argument was that other countries were developing the same technology, then Stark hacked the monitors and showed a video of Justin Hammer’s team testing out a prototype that twisted and failed and looked like it almost killed the person inside of it? That’s basically where we’re at with calling balls and strikes, except there’s no Iron Man — just a bunch of really horrible, flawed prototypes, like Ángel Hernández.

Umpires missing calls is not a new thing. It’s always been a part of this game, and purists will say, “Well, as long as it’s consistent, it’s okay.” But, no, it absolutely is not. The human element of baseball is fine and dandy, but when technology continues to advance, and we have an overlay of the strike zone on our monitors at home that can tell us in real time whether a pitch was a strike or a ball, it’s time that we find a solution to get the call right.

Just last week, Tampa Bay Rays and MLB top prospect Wander Franco, who made his Major League debut on June 22, was on the receiving end of some horrible strike zone management by umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.

Those pitches are almost in the opposing batter’s box. Not only that, they’re not even breaking pitches. How do you call a straight fastball that’s three ball-widths off the plate a strike? And more importantly, how do you do it multiple times?

G/O Media may get a commission

Situations like this leave batters guessing in a game where pitchers are already at an advantage more times than not.

So, in an effort to fix the horrible officiating of Major League umpires and to automate the process, the Atlantic League has begun exploring automated strike zones. Currently setting aside the fact that the system, in and of itself, has some flaws and questions about the impact it would have on the game, last night demonstrated just how far away we are from having an accurate automated strike zone.

The pitch was so far low and away that the catcher didn’t even attempt to frame it. The commentators, who were discussing another topic, interjected with a quick “ball two, it’s outside,” then went back to their conversation. The catcher lofts it back towards the mound, and everyone was moving on to what should have been a 2-2 count.

Then the umpire rings up the batter, who appears to be former big leaguer Jordan Pacheco of the Lexington Legends (see his tweet above) who drops the bat and puts his hands on his knees in disbelief. The catcher looks up at him as if to say, “Yeah, uhh, sorry man.” A good twenty seconds later, the commentators realize that it was called for a strike.

“Oh, that went down as strike three!”

“Let It Go,” from the movie Frozen, played over the sound system, in a truly savage display of pettiness.

Baseball is in a time where hits are down, strikeouts are up, umpires are innately flawed, and there’s no accurate replacement in sight. But hey, America’s Pastime, amirite?
